LIVING GOD’S DREAM

By Making Disciples and Making a Difference. OUR VISION Our vision as a diocese is to be a community of disciples committed to following Jesus Christ into the dream of God for us and for all creation. OUR MISSION Empowered by the Holy Spirit, the Diocese of North Carolina seeks to live God’s dream by making disciples and making a difference. We do so by building joyful congregations and other communities of faith, centered on the Gospel, in the communion of the Episcopal Church. We go forth to offer God’s reconciling love to all persons, with special concern for the unchurched, young people, and those on the margins of society.

The Bishop of North Carolina The XXIII Sunday after Pentecost 24 October 2010 My brothers and sisters in Christ: The late William Stringfellow was one of our Lord’s rather remarkable disciples. He was a Harvard Law School graduate who used his legal skill primarily defending the poor and serving those without other helpers. He was an Episcopalian who could have settled for the mere living out of civic religion and cultural Christianity. Instead, he was someone who sought to really live a life of discipleship. In my estimation Stringfellow and Verna Dozier will stand as two of the more important voices in the 20th century Episcopal Church. Near the end of the Second World War Stringfellow was able to spend time with some members of the German resistance movement and the Confessing Church who were part of the underground movement resisting the Nazis. In conversations with a number of them he was surprised to discover that part of what fed and nurtured many of them during the struggle was the discipline of Bible study. “The recollection that now visits me from listening to those resistance leaders concerns Bible study. While not a practice of the entire resistance, it strongly engaged the whole confessing movement implicated in that resistance. Most appropriately, it often included Jewish as well as Christian participants. I recall being slightly bemused at the time of which I am speaking by the strenuous emphasis placed upon the Bible study. No doubt that bewilderment reflected my own biblical deprivation, a lack in my American churchly upbringing that I have since struggled gladly to overcome. In this dimension of the resistance, the Bible became alive as a means of nurture and communication; recourse to the Bible was in itself a primary, practical, and essential tactic of resistance.” (The Bible and the Confessing Church, A Keeper of the Word, Bill Wylie Kellerman, editor.)

Some years ago I attended a series of lectures on preaching by the late Donald Coggan, who had at the time recently retired from service as Archbishop of Canterbury. When Dr. Coggan began his talk he did so with these words, “The Bible is a dangerous book!” It is. The core message is gospel, God’s good news. And that is dangerous. That Good News, that Gospel will often upset things as they are with God’s dream of how things are meant to be. That Good News, that Gospel, challenges all that is less than love with the incredible power of a love, as the hymn writer says, “that will not let me go.” That Good News, that Gospel, confronts what often is the nightmare of the our social constructions of reality with the reality of the kingdom of God which is the realization of God’s very dream for us and all creation. My prayer is that this book of daily readings from one of the Gospels will be an aid for your deeper study of the whole of Scripture, and deeper living of the word that resists all that is unloving and unjust with a love “so amazing, so divine, it demands my soul, my life, my all.” Keep the faith,

+Michael B. Curry XI Bishop of North Carolina

What is Gospel Based Discipleship? Gospel Based Discipleship is an encounter with the Gospel that is designed to engage people with the Gospel.

Some Ways to Begin There are many ways to read, study and meditate on passages of Scripture. You should use any approach that helps you engage the Gospel. I encourage you to incorporate this into other ways of daily devotions you may already use. Here is one method of reflecting on the Gospel.

GOSPEL REFLECTION Begin with prayer 1. Read the Gospel lesson for the day. What word (s), idea (s) or sentence (s) stand out for you? 2. Re-read the Gospel (maybe in another translation if available) What is Jesus (the Gospel) saying to you? 3. Re-read the Gospel What is Jesus (the Gospel) calling you to do? Close with Prayer

In GBD, there are no right or wrong answers. The engagement is with the Gospel in the center, not with a leader or the search for correct answers. Experienced leaders are not required, and leadership should rotate. Groups and/or individuals using GBD regularly should expect to begin to see their call to mission differently, and some congregations use GBD as a way to focus on what God is calling them to do in their community.

Some Prayers for Use with Gospel Based Discipleship God of peace, let us your people know, that at the heart of turbulence there is an inner calm that comes from faith in you. Keep us from being content with things as they are, that from this central peace there may come a creative compassion, a thirst for justice, and a willingness to give of ourselves in the Spirit of Christ. Amen. A New Zealand Prayer Book Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The Book of Common Prayer O God, who has taught us that your Word is a lantern to our feet and a light to our path: Grant that as this community devoutly reads the Holy Scriptures, we may realize our Fellowship with one another in you, and may learn thereby to know you more fully, to love you more truly, and to follow more faithfully in the steps of your Son Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and Holy Spirit, one God blessed for evermore. Amen. The Wolf Shall Dwell with The Lamb by Eric H. F. Law Most gracious and loving God: Strengthen the hearts of your people in this Diocese, That loving you with our whole heart, And loving our neighbor as ourselves, We might, in the power of the Spirit, Obey the call of Jesus, To go into our world as disciples, Making disciples, And making a difference, Through your saving love. Amen. The Mission Prayer of the Diocese of North Carolina

The Baptismal Covenant I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit And was born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, died and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, And is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge both the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, The holy catholic Church, The communion of saints, The forgiveness of sins, The resurrection of the body, And the life everlasting. Amen. Will you continue in the Apostles teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? The Book of Common Prayer, Holy Baptism, pages 304-305 The duty of all Christians is to follow Christ; to come together week by week for corporate worship; and to work, pray, and give for the spread of the kingdom of God.
