GOSPEL-BASED
DISCIPLESHIP
LIVING GOD’S DREAM
By Making Disciples and Making a Difference
OUR VISION
Our vision as a diocese is to be a community of disciples committed to following Jesus Christ into the dream of God for us and for all creation.
OUR MISSION
Empowered by the Holy Spirit, the Diocese of North Carolina seeks to live God’s dream by making disciples and making a difference. We do so by building joyful congregations and other communities of faith, centered on the Gospel, in the communion of the Episcopal Church. We go forth to offer God’s reconciling love to all persons, with special concern for the unchurched, young people and those on the margins of society.

A Message from The Rt. Rev. Anne E. Hodges-Copple No, the word is very near to you; it is in your mouth and in your heart for you to observe. - Deuteronomy 30:14 Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scripture to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ. - Collect for Proper 28 For a number of years, Bishop Michael Curry encouraged our diocese to practice Gospel-Based Discipleship (GBD). There are numerous ways to keep our hearts, minds, bodies and souls engaged with the lively Word of the Lord through the lens of the Gospel. On the next page, Bishop Curry outlines one such process that can be used by individuals in a daily practice or in small groups such as vestries, weekly Bible studies or parish discernment committees. Grounding our lives and our work in the Gospel is only possible if we are committed and intentional about studying and praying with Scripture. The important thing to remember is that being a disciple of Jesus takes discipline. It is a habit of heart and body. A disciple follows a teacher – in our case Jesus Christ, the Word of God. A good teacher provides some rules, or guidelines, or measures that we might find the way to follow the will of the one God who has created us, redeemed us and sustains us. More than this, the Word of God transforms us! By reading, marking and inwardly digesting the Word of God, which is also the Bread of Life, we are more fully incorporated into the Body of Christ. Being a disciple of Jesus Christ and, therefore, part of the Body of

Christ, means taking on practices that give us the spiritual muscle memory to answer readily the call to follow where he leads, to serve whom he calls us to serve and proclaim his liberating, life-giving love. We are a unity of communities and, therefore, taking on GBD as a diocese, makes our community that much stronger for the days, weeks and years ahead. Now Presiding Bishop Curry is answering a different calling. This is no time to abandon or change direction in our call to ground our spirit, our lives, our words and our actions in the Word of God. Rather, this is the time to rededicate ourselves to the faithful practices of our tradition. Whether it is the Daily Office, African Bible Study, Lectio Divina or Centering Prayer, discern, develop and practice your Rule of Life and continue to “embrace and hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our savior Jesus Christ.

An Introduction to Gospel-Based Discipleship What is Gospel-Based Discipleship (GBD)?
Gospel-Based Discipleship is an encounter with the Gospel that is designed to engage people with the Gospel.
Some Ways to Begin
There are many ways to read, study and meditate on passages of Scripture. You should use any approach that helps you engage the Gospel. I encourage you to incorporate this into other ways of daily devotions you may already use. Here is just one method of reflecting on the Gospel.
Gospel Reflection
Begin with prayer. 1. Read the Gospel lesson for the day. What word(s), idea(s) or sentence(s) stand out to you? 2. Re-read the Gospel (maybe in another translation if available). What is Jesus (the Gospel) saying to you? 3. Re-read the Gospel. What is Jesus (the Gospel) calling you to do? Close with prayer.
In GBD, there are no right or wrong answers.
The engagement is with the Gospel, not with a leader or the search for correct answers. Experienced leaders are not required, and leadership should rotate. Groups and/or individuals using GBD regularly should expect to begin to see their call to mission differently. Some congregations use GBD as a way to focus on what God is calling them to do in their communities. - From the Most Rev. Michael Curry, Presiding Bishop, The Episcopal Church

Some Prayers for Use with Gospel-Based Discipleship God of peace, let us your people know, that at the heart of turbulence there is an inner calm that comes from faith in you. Keep us from being content with things as they are, that from this central peace there may come a creative compassion, a thirst for justice, and a willingness to give of ourselves in the Spirit of Christ. Amen. - A New Zealand Prayer Book Blessed Lord, who caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning: Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. - The Book of Common Prayer O God, who has taught us that your Word is a lantern to our feet and a light to our path: Grant that as this community devoutly reads the Holy Scriptures, we may realize our Fellowship with one another in you, and may learn thereby to know you more fully, to love you more truly, and to follow more faithfully in the steps of your Son Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and Holy Spirit, one God blessed for evermore. Amen. - The Wolf Shall Dwell with The Lamb by Eric H. F. Law Most gracious and loving God: Strengthen the hearts of your people in this Diocese, That loving you with our whole heart, And loving our neighbor as ourselves, We might, in the power of the Spirit, Obey the call of Jesus, To go into our world as disciples, Making disciples, And making a difference, Through your saving love. Amen. - The Mission Prayer of the Diocese of North Carolina

The Baptismal Covenant I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit And was born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, died and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, And is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge both the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, The holy catholic Church, The communion of saints, The forgiveness of sins, The resurrection of the body, And the life everlasting. Amen. Will you continue in the Apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? - The Book of Common Prayer, Holy Baptism, pages 304-305
