Sodium Benzoate Sodium benzoate is a preservative commonly used in many processed food such as beverages, salads, relishes, and sauerkraut etc. Sodium benzoate is frequently used in processed foods to prevent the growth of bacteria, yeast or other nasty microorganisms that could spoil food. Sodium benzoate occurs naturally, along with benzoic acid and its esters and it is also produced synthetically by the neutralization of benzoic acid, by partial oxidation of toluene with oxygen. It is soluble in water and it has numerous industrial applications. Food industry application - Sodium benzoate is a major preservative and antioxidant use in the food industry. It has an antifungal property which creates an environment in which fungi and other microbial organism cannot grow and spread thereby protecting foods from invasion by fungi that cause food to spoil which could be harmful to the body. Sodium benzoate works by entering the individual cells in the food and balancing its pH level, increasing the overall acidity of the food by lowering the intracellular pH of certain foods.

Pharmaceutical and medical application - It also serves as a preservative and a capsule lubricant use in the pharmaceutical and manufacturing industry. It is also one of the major ingredients in the treatment of ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency, Treatment of hyperargininaemia, Treatment of argininosuccinic aciduria, etc. Other industrial applications of sodium benzoate – · Paint additives and coating additives · Plating agents and surface treating agents · Agricultural chemicals (non-pesticide) · Corrosion inhibitors and anti-scaling agents · Oxidizing/reducing agents. POTASSIUM SORBATE Potassium sorbate is a food grade chemical additive. It is an odourless, very soluble in water and tasteless salt produced from potassium hydroxide and sorbic acid. Potassium sorbate is primarily used as a preservative in a number of foods, since its antimicrobial properties stop the growth and spread of harmful bacteria and molds thereby increase the shelf life of foods and so many other dietary. Potassium sorbate is a popular preservative because it’s effective and doesn't change the qualities of a product, such as taste, smell, or appearance and it is effective in a variety of industrial applications including wine, food, dietary supplement, and personal care products. Potassium sorbate is very safe as food preservatives on edible products when it is used appropriately according to U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

As a wine stabilizing agent - it’s usually added to wine after active fermentation has completed. The work of potassium sorbate in wine is to prevent spoilage by yeasts and molds in the finished wine. It does this by rendering any surviving yeast incapable of multiplying. Yeast living at that moment can continue fermenting any residual sugar into CO2 and alcohol and to prevent further fermentation of sugars added after fermentation such as when you back sweeten a wine. As a food preservative additive - Potassium sorbate prolongs the shelf life of processed foods products by stopping the growth of mold, yeast, and fungi. It is basically an active ingredient for curbing the growth of these microorganisms that cause the decomposing of the food materials. Potassium sorbate inhibits such growth and in turn increases the life of the food product.

Preservative in personal care products - An important ingredient in personal care products and cosmetics. It is used as a substitute for parabens. It is an active ingredient of the daily shampoos, conditioners, lotions, bath gels and other cosmetics that we use on a daily basis.
