EQ CONFERENCE AFRICAN EQ 2019: THE REVOLUTION Transforming Africa - Leveraging EQ to optimise learning & drive organisational performance

I

t was all sorts of nerves on 20th and 21st of February 2019 at PTS Africa who collaborated with Six Seconds, The Wangari Maathai Foundation and The Vale school Muthaiga to host the first of its kind EQ4Africa Conference. The 2 day conference was held at the Gem Suites Hotel in Kileleshwa and had 87 eager delegates and 12 inspiring speakers. The first day was centered around experiencing the power of Emotional Intelligence (EQ) to transform education in Africa by creating greater classroom engagement and increasing the motivation to learn. Education is key in all of us especially for the younger generation and it’s clear that we can’t keep doing the

same thing and expect different results. How education is served will definitely influence how it’s received. We’ve experienced or heard of cases of bullying in school, child violence at home and school and all this causes a lot of mental stress if not addressed. Education is not just about teaching math, science or the languages, but it’s also about social and emotional learning. Social and emotional Learning enables children and youth to cultivate essential life skills including awareness of one’s own emotions,

fostering empathy, respect and care for others, establishing strong relationships, setting and achieving positive goals, making ethical and responsible decisions, and handling adversity constructively. The topics covered on this day were: Fostering mindsets for growth, the impact of social learning, cultivating balance in the classroom, EQ, education and the 21st Century skill building. navigating emotions to drive engagement and lastly navigating your power and potential. Day 2 of the conference was a milestone to organizations and individuals as the focus was on the power of EQ to cultivate and sustain a high-performance environment within organisations. It’s been reported that the workplace has become a toxic environment for employees to thrive due to the pressure they receive from their line

and top managers to perform and outdo themselves. The competition in business is also cut throat and there’s an invisible expectation to look a certain way in the eyes of society that mounts up the pressure leading to great emotional stress. Research has provided clear evidence outlining the impact of EQ on organisational and individual success. One of the most important applications of EQ is helping leaders foster a workplace climate conducive to high performance and help individuals be more aware of themselves and navigate through their own emotions. Emotions is not a popular topic and some may deem it weak as a topic of discussion. However, it’s been proven that if you understand and are aware of your emotions, it helps you develop positive social interactions which is a first step in helping one to identify their true potential.

The topics discussed were: the vital signs of performance, the impact of EQ on the future fit for the 2030 workplace, leveraging EQ to drive organizational performance, aligning individual purpose and organizational direction, mindful self awareness for effective leadership and building high performance teams. Lastly, there was a panel discussion on the State of the Heart African report that’s set out to equip 250 millions Africans with the tools to leverage EQ. The conference ended with a high note with the launch of PTS Africa into a more expanded portfolio from training to provide people development solutions around EQ training and coaching. The delegates on the other hand left with a hunger to apply all the practical tools learnt.  Natasha Nalyaka, Content Writer & Events Planner Lavida Events Events Manager, PTS Africa

Do you DO EQ? The Harvard Business Review has hailed Emotional Intelligence as “a ground-breaking, paradigmshattering idea, one of the most influential business ideas of the decade.

M

ost people know Emotional Intelligence is important – we have all heard that it can matter more than IQ. But the challenge is, many of us aren’t quite sure how to operationalise it, how to actually DO EQ. And that is why I started the EQ4 Africa Conference. Economists say we’ve started the “Fourth Industrial Revolution” where we are changing ourselves with nearly magical technology: The question then is - what is required

for us to use this capacity for the greatest good, more particularly across the African continent? Most people first heard the term “Emotional Intelligence” around 1995 with the publication of Daniel Goleman’s best-selling book ‘Emotional Intelligence, Why it Can Matter More Than IQ.’ In that work, Goleman laid out a powerful case asserting that factors such as self-awareness, self-discipline, and empathy determine personal and professional success. He drew on the work of numerous leading scientists and authors who were working to define and measure the skills of Emotional Intelligence The Harvard Business Review has hailed Emotional Intelligence as “a ground-breaking, paradigmshattering idea,” one of the most influential business ideas of the decade. Often, such claims in the business world prove to be just a fad, with no real underlying substance. But the science of Emotional Intelligence has been explored by researchers across the globe, ensuring that it’s application is grounded in solid data.

Andrew Coleman defines Emotional intelligence (EQ) as ‘the capability of individuals to recognize their own emotions and those of others, discern between different feelings and label them appropriately, use emotional information to guide thinking and behaviour, and manage and/ or adjust emotions to adapt to environments or achieve one’s goal(s)’ At Six Seconds, we have a simple definition of EQ – being smarter with feelings. Our research shows that EQ is strongly linked to increased performance outcome scores of Effectiveness, Relationships, Wellbeing & Quality of Life. That’s one reason the World Economic Forum identifies Emotional Intelligence as one of the essential skills for the future. Gerald Mount puts it this way – Emotional Intelligence has twice the power of IQ to predict performance. EQ is also a better predictor than employee skill, knowledge, or expertise.

But how does one DO EQ? To provide a practical and simple way to learn and practice emotional intelligence, Six Seconds developed a three-part model in 1997 as a process – an action plan for using EQ in daily life.

This Six Seconds model of EQin-Action begins with three important pursuits – to be more aware (noticing what you do), more intentional (doing what you mean), and more purposeful (doing it for a reason).

What options do I have?

What do you truly want?

At the core, Emotional Intelligence is something to BE

B

y being more emotionally intelligent, smarter with feelings, individuals are more accurately able to recognize their emotions and the emotions of others. The exciting thing about Emotional Intelligence is that it is a learnable skill. That means that wherever you are on the EQ scale, you can

develop – you can strengthen your ‘EQ muscle’ and leverage what is an essential skill. I started the EQ4Africa conference to create a platform for knowledge sharing, experiential learning & networking – where participants can share insights, develop practical skills & gain best practice tips on how to leverage Emotional

Now in it’s 2nd year, the EQ4Africa Conference is the only such platform of its kind in East & Central Africa. The EQ4Africa Conference takes place this year amidst the onslaught of the COVID-19 pandemic, at a time where individuals are trying to figure out how to maintain balance and find the emotional & mental strength to navigate the uncertain road ahead. If Emotional Intelligence ever was a nice-to-have (and I don’t believe that it ever was), it has clearly become a ‘must-have’ in the face of all the challenges (and opportunities) that await us as we pivot to the ‘new normal’ – whatever that looks like.

The EQ4Africa is a timely event, giving space to a necessary conversation. In times of crisis, how do you ensure that leverage your emotions as a strategic resource to propel you forward, rather than suffer the consequences of them weighing you down like a ball & chain? It’s a brave new world out there – and those that will thrive will need to be armed with, amongst everything else, the ability to “DO” EQ!  Mucha Mlingo, Founder & Lead Changemaker, PTS Africa

THE DYNAMICS OF

RESOLVE & OPTIMISM

We cannot choose the events we find ourselves in, they happen to us, we cannot choose the outcomes, they are a consequence of what has happened, but we can choose our resolve.

F

orecasting is an important tool in business, we have witnessed several leaders and professionals give near perfect business forecast. At the beginning of every fiscal year, many organizations do their best to make a forecast for the new year, this helps to strategically make plans. While this is great, there are so many events in our lives and businesses that we cannot predict, a perfect example is the covid-19 pandemic. Numerous situations that are not planned for will occur as they are occurring now, it’s obvious that there is no absolute surety about plans and forecast; of all that is unsure, one thing however is sure and that will be captured in the word “change”. Disruption will happen, shocking events will happen, powers will change, policies will change, systems

will change, processes will change and all this will continue to affect the way we live, work, war, love, engage, and do business. So, what do we do in times like this? how do we engage a world filled with uncertainties and absolute certainty of change? There are so many things we can do and one of them is to clarify between events, outcomes and resolves as we make decisions. This is the time to understand the dynamics of events and outcomes and resolve as a tool to navigating this present world. A definition of event according to the dictionary is “what has happen or taken place” for example covid-19; a definition of outcome is “the result of something or may be the consequence”, for example people

dying or dwindling economy because of covid-19 and one definition of resolve is “to settle a matter or find solution and decide on a course of action”. We cannot choose the events we find ourselves in, they happen to us, we cannot choose the outcomes, they are a consequence of what has happened, but we can choose our resolve. While the event can be the same thing, and the outcomes are varying in effect, the resolve is totally in our jurisdiction. There are different types of resolves different people will make in the face of an event and herein lies the difference between those who practice optimism and those who don’t. What is optimism and how is it practiced? Please read further.

Types of Resolves Hopeful vs Hopeless resolve A hopeful resolve is taken by people who expect to experience an eventual positive outcome from a situation irrespective of the present negative outcome; this paradigm aids the decision to keep moving, searching and influences strategic action that might help the situation in the long run. A hopeless resolve is taken by people who expect nothing positive from the situation, all that will be seen is the negativity of the present and all decisions will be made based on the prevailing negativity. A hopeless resolve is what leads to further negativity like depression and suicide.

Continuity vs Discontinuity Resolve A continuity resolve comes from the mindset of people who are able to see that the present situation is not an end, such that no matter what is going on, there can be an advancement, there is a tomorrow and it will come with good tidings. This mindset breeds creativity, adaptability and resilience. A discontinuity resolve comes from the mindset

of people who cannot see any form of advancement from the present situation, they see an end and do not have any motivation to continue, they lack the ability to navigate the present situation and unfortunately give up.

Possibility vs Impossibility Resolve A possibility resolve is taken by people who sees prospect and potential gains irrespective of the challenges at hand, they do not allow the present challenge blind them from the possibilities available; while the world saw the impossibilities or a metal flying into the air and staying there at will defying the law of gravity, the Wright Brothers kept seeing possibilities and made a resolve to keep researching and keep trying, eventually the possibility they saw was achieved. Possibility is always there, but do you see it? The Impossibility Resolve is taken by people who sees failure, they do not see any likelihood of a situation getting better, they cannot see any form of probability, their resolve is empowered by the fact that it is practically impossible to solve a present challenge,

it is impossible to move ahead and it is impossible to find a solution. The see impossibilities and make a resolve to end it. Their creativity is marred and they throw in the towel.

Inclusive Based vs Isolated based Resolve An inclusive based resolve is the type of resolve that comes from the mind of people who see a challenge from a widespread perspective. They see the present challenge as a general challenge, not a challenge affecting them alone, they find solace from the fact that the challenge is general and several people are looking for solutions to the problem, they find safety in the pervasiveness of the situation. This helps them get curious, seek collaboration, explore possibilities, reach out more and learn more. An isolated based resolve is the type of resolve that comes from the mind of people who see a challenge from an isolated perspective, they believe it is as a result of what they have done or not done, they beat themselves for doing the wrong thing, for making the wrong decision, for

making mistakes, for not preparing enough etc. they can go on and on about what they did not do well, what they should have done well and find no solution to the challenge. Optimism is the ability to proactively take a perspective of hope and possibilities in any situation you find yourself‌ (six seconds) particularly challenging situations. If you look around you, you will see evidence of possibilities from challenges that people have found themselves in and you will also see evidence of impossibilities from the same challenges; this means possible and impossible outcomes are available in the horizon, this leaves us with the power to choose which perspective we want to take, you can proactively take a perspective of hope and possibilities, this will aid hopeful, continuity, possibility and inclusive resolve and you will see your business, tasks, relationships and wellbeing advance irrespective of the situation you find yourself. ď Ž Enahoro Okhae CEO; Pause Factory Twitter @enahorookhae
