Fuel cell pioneer Intelligent Energy, one of the world’s largest independent fuel cell companies has received £38 million from GIC, the Singapore Government’s sovereign wealth fund, for 10 per cent of their share capital, to grow its consumer electronics and distributed power & generation divisions. With a history of over 25 years of fuel cell innovation, originating from EPSRC-supported research at Loughborough University. Intelligent Energy’s fuel cell technology was behind the first manned flight of a fuel cell-powered aircraft with Boeing, the world’s first purpose built fuel cell motorbike, the first European type approved fuel cell vehicle, and a fleet of zero carbon London fuel cell taxis used in the London 2012 Olympics. Founded in 2001, Intelligent Energy is one of the fastest growing technology companies in Europe with major global partnerships including the Suzuki Motor Corporation with whom it has formed a joint venture company in Japan. Based in Loughborough in the UK Midlands, with offices in London, California, India and Japan, the company now employs over 350 people worldwide and continues to work closely with UK academics across a number of leading universities.
