Pioneering research and skills

Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council

The wonder stuff Wonder material graphene, the strongest, thinnest material there is, has a host of amazing potential applications – from flexible electronics to superlight aircraft. Supported by EPSRC and Royal Society funding, Professor Karl Coleman pioneered a cost-effective, eco-friendly way to ‘grow’ significant quantities of graphene – leading to his formation of a company, Durham Graphene Sciences (DGS), to commercialise his research. Two years and a host of awards later, DGS is central to a market estimated to be worth over £400 million by 2020; and the company’s contribution has been recognised throughout the industry.
