RANCHO SANTA FE COVENANT
Rancho Santa Fe Covenant has one of the finest private riding and hiking trail systems in the country. This is one of the main reasons that our area is so special, in that it binds us together as a true community and does much to reinforce the rural character that we all cherish. Rancho Santa Fe Association has approximately 50 miles of interconnecting scenic trails that meander throughout the Covenant. These trails are reserved for the private use of Association members and their accompanied guests, are designed to take advantage of the beauty of The Ranch as well as for ease of access for its residents. Horseback riders, walkers, joggers and walkers with dogs on leashes are welcome to use the trail system. Members are encouraged to pick up a trail map and a copy of the trail rules at the Association office.

Fairbanks Valley Farm
Owners: Pam & Bob Buie 20 | E q u e s t r i a n A l m a n a c

estled into a small dale in Rancho Santa Fe lies the exquisite Fairbanks Valley Farm. Encompassing twenty-six gorgeous acres, surrounded by tall trees and freshened by the ocean breeze, the facility’s gorgeous main barn is its crown jewel. Pam and Bob Buie purchased the property over twenty years ago and after meticulous planning, built the main barn. For the five years prior to construction, Pam traveled to countless facilities the world over, researching every detail. “I asked several owners of nice horse properties what they liked most about their barns. Everyone was very helpful, and generous with recommendations.” Following her extensive research, Pam developed her own design for the barn, then consulted with architects and interior designers to bring it to reality. No detail, no matter how small, was overlooked.
Form follows function fabulously in this superbly planned facility. The Buies have owned show jumpers for many years, and created space to accommodate them. “Our oversize 14’ x 14’ stalls with their tall ceilings are great for the European warmblood horses, and I love the pasture turnouts. They let the horses be horses and relax between shows.” Pam is particularly pleased with the large circular driveway. “We use it daily for shipping horses to and from shows, and for bringing in hay and shavings.” The Buie children grew up riding at Fairbanks Valley Farm. Pam and Bob look forward to welcoming future grandchildren to the property, along with the ponies and horses, so several generations can enjoy this pristine place they call home.

TRES PALOMAS Owners: Sarah & Jon Kelly 22 | T r a i n e r s
S
arah and Jon Kelly left Northern California in 1998 to be closer to their thoroughbred racehorses in training at the Southern California tracks, and to provide a home for their broodmares. A school teacher at the time, daughter Melanie Brooks was asked by her parents if she would like to join them in their move south to manage the family thoroughbred business at Tres Palomas and in her words, “It has been a fabulous journey!” Drawn by the undeniable magic of Rancho Santa Fe, they found a pristine fifteen-acre property that looks like a plein-air painting come to life. The centerpiece of the property is a beautifully appointed and well-designed barn neatly trimmed in hunter green and white, and surrounded by inviting paddocks for the horses to relax and unwind. Already
an idyllic spot for horses and people, this beautifully manicured fifteen acres was a lush landscape traced with white fences and shaded by mature and graceful trees. It needed no improvement, so little was changed upon their arrival. According to Melanie, “We were really drawn to the property because of its spacious and relatively flat grass pastures and beautiful layout.” Over the years, the family shifted their race horse business to Kentucky, allowing Melanie to bring in a trainer and guide the facility in a hunter/jumper direction. Lots of memories have been created at Tres Palomas and there’s little doubt that Melanie’s twelve-year-old daughter Hannah, herself a rider, will have “loads of great stories to tell about life on the farm.” Melanie’s favorite place to ride on the property is the upper grass field with its natural obstacles, banks and open water. She also loves being able to walk up to the main house for lunch. “I feel so fortunate that we are a family that still has the joy and luxury of sitting down together for lunch. My mom makes the best chili ever and she even sets the table.” B a r n s F r o m H e a v e n | 23
Lucky Jack FARM Owners: Patty & Marc Brutten 24 | T r a i n e r s
L
ocated on a stunning fifteen-acre site just a few miles inland from the Pacific Ocean, Lucky Jack Farm sits on an overlook surrounded by beautiful views. Owner Patty Brutten was drawn to the property not only for its enviable aesthetics, but also because it was zoned for horsekeeping and is ideally located for a hunter/jumper training facility, as it is very close to the Southern California show grounds. The Bruttens built the property and brought it to completion in September of 2010. “We hired an excellent team,” says Patty, “with John Blackburn, an architect specializing in the design and construction of barns. The project went smoothly and we learned a lot from his expertise. We also hired Theresa Clark, who completed our landscape plans. We specified 100% drought tolerant plant material, and it had to be horse friendly. She did extensive research to make sure that no plant on the property would be harmful if ingested by a grazing horse!” The design team also benefitted from the expertise of Lucky Jack Farm’s former trainer, Marcy Gehrke, who was instrumental in advising them about the daily workings of an elite training facility. “The organization and layout turned out great and has made the every day function of the facility very efficient.” Outfitted with stucco, terra cotta, and wood, the barn and clubhouse evoke an early twentieth-century Rancho Santa Fe style, but with contemporary detailing. The clubhouse features a lounge with full kitchen, a huge entertainment area, an outdoor fireplace and patio, a guest suite, and a separate residence for staff housing. The beautiful view deck located between the barn and the clubhouse is Patty’s favorite place to hang out. “It is just a perfect place to be, close to the horses and surrounded by incredibly nice views of the arena, pond, and trail system.” Lucky Jack Farm is currently under the management and hunter jumper training services of Mickie Sage Inc. Putnam Ba rn Owners: Rochelle & Jim Putnam
26 | T r a i n e r s
W
hen Rochelle and Jim Putnam retired from financial services in 2007 and 2005 respectively, they put a lot of thought and research into choosing where they wanted to spend their retirement. At the time, they were living in Rancho Pacifica and boarding their horses at a nearby stable, so one of the requirements was that their prospective home have a place to keep the horses onsite. Knowing that horses and trail riding would be essential elements in their selection process, they looked at a number of equestrian-friendly communities, all of them in California because they love the weather and the California lifestyle. After evaluating several communities, including Santa Ynez, Montecito, Carmel Valley in Northern California, and Hope Ranch in Santa Barbara, they found it easy to see that Rancho Santa Fe was the premier equestrian community in California. “Its fifty miles of riding trails; proximity to premier show facilities; and access to outstanding animal care professionals, world class trainers, and the equine hospital at Helen Woodward,
made the decision an easy one,” says Rochelle. “The wonderful equestrian history of the Covenant of Rancho Santa Fe was also a major factor in our decision process.” They found the perfect property, knowing that its fairly level five acres would be an ideal place to build a barn. In January 2007 they moved into their newly built home and set about building their barn. “Our builder, Greg Agee, helped us create our dream barn, riding arena, and pastures for the horses. At the time we moved in, we had two paint horses, but our equine family grew to four geldings (including a Friesian and a Dutch warmblood that Rochelle shows in dressage), and required an addition that was completed in 2011.” “Building the barn was really fun and interesting. My favorite place on the property is in front of the barn!” Enjoying the incomparable Southern California lifestyle and the beautiful home they have created for themselves and their horses, Rochelle and Jim ride the Rancho Santa Fe trails every day. Secreto Owners: Kathy & Bill Scripps
28 | T r a i n e r s
K
athy and Bill Scripps refer to their discovery of an eight-acre undeveloped property near the heart of San Diego as a stroke of luck. Purchased in the 1990s, with their vision and the help of friend and architect Jerri Grindle, they created a home that reflects their love for natural materials and the organic Frank Lloyd Wright style. Over a ten-year period, landscape architects Greg Stone and Kirsten Larson designed the topography with carefully chosen indigenous trees and plantings, gracefully interspersed with the 50-year-old Mexican fan palms already on the property. Prominently featured in their design are large boulders that reflect Bill’s love for rocks and their sculptural qualities. When the Scripps added an adjacent five-acre property in 2004, the landscape duo teamed with
HB&A Architects and builder Gary Cissell to develop a dream barn and two lush pastures for their five horses. Their design would later win accolades and top awards from the California Landscape Contractors Association as well as the Rancho Santa Fe Association. When not traveling, Bill enjoys an evening stroll across the grounds to pet and feed the horses. Kathy, the equestrian in the family, enjoys gathering girlfriends for rides over the ranch’s trails, and relaxing with them afterward on the barn’s patio surrounded by an Old-West style succulent garden. “We created all this to raise a family,” Bill said of the property and its many resort-style amenities. “I like to view it as multigenerational. I anticipate grandkids playing here someday.”

WENDY LEE THOMPSON Coastline Hunters & Jumpers 5720 Old Carmel Valley Road | San Diego, CA 92130 214.505.5546 coastlinehuntersandjumpers.com Wendy has been training horses for the past 26 years and has competed, coached and trained horses and riders all over the United States and Europe. She has recently returned from the 2014 Global Champions Tour in Europe including Chantilly, London, Valkenswaard and the Stephex Masters in Belgium. Prior to this, Wendy was a private coach, rider, and trainer for various families including La Joie Farms, Bo Shin Farms, Cypress Trails Farm and Fleur de Lis Farms training their horses from baby green hunters to grand prix jumpers. She also coached the members of those families from junior and amateur riders preparing them for competition at all levels throughout the United States. In 1997 she opened her business known as “Coastline Hunters and Jumpers” and competed with her Grand Prix Horse “Winstar” on the California Grand Prix Circuit competing in World Cup qualifiers for the “Will to Win” Foundation. Her goal, alongside this foundation was to promote cancer awareness and her quest for the Olympic Games representing American Samoa. This was of great importance to her both professionally and personally, as she is a stage 4 cancer survivor of synovial sarcoma. Her battle with cancer gave her a deeper understanding of health and fitness for herself and her horses. Physical health and a balance of emotional well-being are closely intertwined and are the foundation and success with her training. She believes in order to keep a horse physically and mentally sound for the show ring, lasting results will be achieved through a consistent program based on trust and time for natural progression to develop. Wendy looks forward to sharing her knowledge and experience with horses and riders at all levels in Southern California. In addition to this, Wendy will be importing reasonably priced show horses from Europe to be sold or leased.

She moved to Southern California to train with Ronnie Freeman her senior year of high school and began riding horses full-time through college. After her first big win at Indio 15 years ago, Parker jump-started her winning Grand Prix career with her horse, Wisby D. In addition to multiple Grand Prix wins and placings, Wisby D and Parker also laid down a memorable four-fault round at the 2000 Spruce Meadows Shell Cup Derby. Parker started Cross Creek West in 2004 where she trains a select client base of A-Circuit Hunter/Jumpers. Parker believes genuine hard work, not a “Rolls Royce” horse, is the key to success and pushes her riders to put in the extra effort. She is consistently ranked in the Top Ten of the Pacific Coast’s Leading Riders and continues to compete at the Grand Prix level. According to Parker, the most rewarding part of her career is bringing along a horse from a young age and seeing them reach their full potential. She also enjoys watching horses she has sold succeed with their new owners. In 2015, Parker is looking forward to moving up some quality young horses to the next difficulty level as they mature.

Archie Cox found his love for horses at a young age. His grandmother shared with him her love of horses and at age 7 Archie and his sister Suzie convinced their parents to get a horse. Archie was a determined young rider and set his sights on the equitation ring, showing in the Maclay and USET Show Jumping Talent Search (which he brought home a gold in). Archie would later make his way west and work for Karen Healey for eight and a half years. He was able to take a lot away from his experience with Healey which set him up to successfully begin Brookway Stables where his students have taken home more than 40 national titles. The foundation of Archie’s program is building confidence in his students by focusing on the basics. With an innate ability to pair horse and rider and as his student’s biggest fan, he is able to bring out the best in his horses and riders and allow them to reach their full potential.

TRIPLE CROWN PROFILES
The Power of Heart BY PAM MALEY
O
n June 6, 2015 the extraordinarily beautiful American Pharoah crossed the finish line into history, carrying the heart of a nation with him. Becoming only the twelfth horse in history to wear the mantle of the Triple Crown, he led from the starting gate and left no doubt of his intent. To paraphrase the Sunday New York Times, coming out of the wide final turn at Belmont, as American Pharoah squared his shoulders for the long stretch run that has destroyed the hopes of so many, jockey Victor Espinoza dropped the reins of his colt and let the big bay take him home.
The California trio of American Pharoah, Espinoza, and trainer Bob Baffert had become the first to capture the Triple Crown trophy in 37 long years. And at age 43, Espinoza became the oldest jockey, as well as the first hispanic jockey, to win the Triple Crown, calling himself as he famously did while pouring rainwater out of his boot after the Preakness, “the luckiest Mexican alive!” Espinoza was born on a dairy farm in Mexico, the eleventh of twelve children. When he was 15, he left to assist his brother José, a quarter horse trainer. He entered jockey school at age 17, paying for it by T r i p l e C r o w n P r o f i l e s | 61
driving a bus in Mexico City, and within a few years he was racing thoroughbreds at the track there. In 1990, 18 years old and unable to speak English, he moved to California’s Bay area. Starting out very poor, he lived in the tack room at the stables, and was described as a hardworking kid who was out there every day. But he kept getting better and better, and soon people began to see his talent. By the mid-1990s he had moved his tack to Los Angeles, where his career began to take off, and in 2002 he had his first chance at the Triple Crown aboard War Emblem. In 2014 he was asked to ride California Chrome, who just couldn’t seem to get into the winner’s circle. Like Frosty the Snowman who was brought to life under that ‘old silk hat,’ California Chrome came alive under Espinoza. And in 2015, Bob Baffert made the now historic decision to place him on American Pharoah. But this diminutive five foot two, 112 pound man with the sincere and engaging smile, has a heart that far outstrips his size. About ten years before California Chrome, Espinoza was having lunch with a friend, and his friend suggested that they visit City of Hope, the renowned cancer center located in Duarte, in Southern California. Espinoza was so saddened by what he saw, and so disturbed by the tragedy of children who would be unable to fulfill their lives, that he was moved to tears and couldn’t stay. He went back to the car to wait for his friend. In the post-Derby California Chrome press conference ten years later, Espinoza talked about it publicly for the first time. “Since that time, I have donated 10% of my earnings for all the kids that have cancer,” he told the interviewer. “It makes me cry to see all the kids that can’t even have a life like we have.” He had quietly fulfilled his pledge for ten years, but it wasn’t until then, that even City of Hope learned where the checks were coming from. He had sent them faithfully through his bookkeeper, and his name wasn’t on them. “Sometimes, I forget to pay my bills, but I never forget about City of Hope,” he said. after the Triple Crown, he donated his entire share of the winnings (about $80,000). Hall of Fame trainer Baffert, who makes his home in La Cañada-Flintridge and bases his training operation at Santa Anita, was born in 1953 in Nogales, Arizona where his family kept cattle and enough chickens to supply eggs to the local restaurants. “There was nothing racing about us,” says Baffert. But over the years, he found his calling, becoming a sought-after quarter horse trainer before moving into thoroughbreds. He made his way to Southern California, and made the transition to thoroughbreds, rocketing to the top and becoming the leading money-winning trainer four times. But in 2012, while riding the crest, he was faced with an enormous challenge of a different sort. While in Dubai for the Dubai World Cup with his wife Jill and 7-year-old son Bode, it became clear that he was having a heart attack. After a call for help, an ambulance with more than a little age on it appeared, and whisked him to the hospital, where emergency procedures were quickly performed to save his life. But over the years, he found his calling, becoming a sought-after quarter horse trainer before moving into thoroughbreds ... rocketing to the top and becoming the leading money-winning trainer four times.
His doctors made it clear just how close he had come to full cardiac arrest; the heart that raced with every hoofbeat had almost stopped. Baffert has spoken often about how such an experience changes your outlook and rearranges your priorities. Grateful for every day, and embracing his family, he has now made a place for himself in history. Like Espinoza, Bob and Jill Baffert donated their Triple Crown winnings to causes dear to their hearts. A $50,000 donation was given to the California Retirement Management Account (CARMA), and $50,000 to Old Friends Farm in Kentucky, two charities that provide homes for retired racehorses. And in honor of a close friend who died on Preakness day, $50,000 went to the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund. With the heart of a winner and a stride that looks like he’s floating, the big bay colt with the quiet and kind demeanor made all this possible, touching the heart of a nation on that June day. LOREN BOOTH
Reining Renaissance Woman B Y PA M M A L E Y
L
oren Booth is a fifth-generation native Californian, President and owner of Booth Ranches, mother, grandmother, philanthropist, horsewoman, Quarter Horse breeder, and reiner, not necessarily in that order, and she keeps all those balls in the air with style and grace. Booth Ranches, LLC, founded in 1957 on 40 acres by her father Otis Booth, has become one of California’s major orange grower-packer-shippers. Loren has been acknowledged as the agent of growth in recent years, as the ranch has expanded to its present 7,500 acres near Orange Cove in the San Joaquin Valley. She attended California State University, and in 1998, completed the California Leadership Program, a two-year program to which she credits much of her success and vision. She has served as Chairman of the Board since 2009. Loren also chairs the Hills Valley Irrigation District, which, along with all of California, is navigating some major challenges with the long-standing drought. Booth Ranches is part of the Friant Water Authority which diverts water from the San Joaquin River to over a million acres of Central California farmland. As the water supply diminishes, water must be allocated, and Friant has received a zero allocation the last two years. To date, sadly, Booth Ranches has had to let dry 64 | L o r e n B o o t h
or sell a substantial amount of its acreage. “But,” says Loren, “we have a great operation and wonderful employees, and we’re working our way through it.” While Booth Ranches is internationally known for its citrus, they produce another premium product as well – performance Quarter Horses bred to excel in the sport of reining. Always an animal lover, when Loren discovered reining, “I fell in love. I was hooked.” By the time her trainer, Tracer Gilson joined Booth Ranches, Loren had been traveling to Arizona for ten years to train with him. In 2007 she bought a beautiful piece of pristine land along the Kings River, with a lovely park at one end. Loren is on the Board of Directors of Childrens’ Institute, Inc. (CII) in Los Angeles, an organization that helps children overcome the devastating effects of violence, abuse and neglect, and she uses the park to provide a camp for the children of CII in the spring and fall. Booth Ranches provides tents, sleeping bags, and other camping gear, along with meals and activities for the four-day sessions. Already assembling a broodmare band, in 2009 Loren began developing her horse facilities. She chose to locate the foaling barn and pastures near her house at the center of the citrus groves. “We raise 12-18 babies a year,” she said, “and it’s a joy to be surrounded by the horses, and watch the foals grow and play.”
Opposite Page: Oranges bearing the Booth Ranches brand roll along the assembly line; This page (clockwise from top left): The foaling barn; Baby love; Loren’s niece Keely, sister Jenny, Tracer Gilson, daughter Blair holding granddaughter Elle.
In 2010, trainer Tracer Gilson and his wife Tricia came on board. Together with Loren, they designed the training facility at the other end of the new property, away from the park. It was, says Loren, “very much a joint effort.” While Tracer takes on the training duties, Tricia manages the mares, babies, yearlings, all PR, advertising, photography and videos, and preps babies for sales. “When the yearlings turn two years old, training begins in earnest,” says Loren. “After the Futurity in Oklahoma City in December, we take a couple of weeks off, then start the two-year-olds in training.”
Asked to tell us some of the things that she loves about reining and competing, she says, “It takes you away; you are one-on-one with the horse, and totally focused. There’s not a better place to be. It’s a nice community of people.” As to the horses, she says, “All of our horses are Quarter Horses; they have amazingly good minds.” Loren injured her knee last December, but is now back to riding. “My first horse show in a while is coming up soon. My daughter Blair has been riding and showing for me, but now I’m getting my horse back!” she says with a smile in her voice. We wish Loren and Sheza Smart Wimpy a winning return to the ring.

PURCHASED Flexi was purchased in 2002 as an unproven six year old strictly as a competition horse. Rider Rich Fellers had good luck with the breed and was happy to give Flexible a chance to prove himself. MOST MEMORABLE SHOW RING MOMENT In 2012, Flexi and Fellers were the first U.S. combination to win the FEI World Cup Final since 1987. Then the pair won six grand prix classes, including Olympic Qualifiers, before finishing 8th individually at the London Olympic Games. BEST ASPECT OF THE HORSE A testament to Flexi’s desire and heart, one only has to look at his recent performance at Spruce Meadows
in the Pan American Cup. The pair went into the jump off, ready to win. Landing off the first fence, Fellers made a sharp turn to the left and Flexi pulled his front left shoe. Fellers didn’t know, as this did not deter the stallion in the slightest as he continued. Losing precious milliseconds, the ride didn’t go quite to plan, including an unfortunate slip and rail at the last fence. Even with three shoes, they finished 6th in the class. California Guys that Make you JUMP
BY JACKIE MCFARLAND & ATALYA BOYTNER
C
alifornia puts its stamp on all who call it home, but these men don’t fit the stereotype. Their days in the sun are not spent in the sand and surf. These California men can be found at the barn and at the show ring. All successful in their own right, we asked these dedicated, hard-working professionals to share a little about their beginnings in the saddle, as well as the things that they love about horses and competition, their best memories of 2015, and their goals going forward. A deep appreciation and love of horses is certainly a common thread.
Hap Hansen RANCHO SANTA FE, CA
Where were you born?
I was born in Los Angeles.
Where did you ride for the first time?
My very first riding lesson was with a man named Earnie Robertson at Eaton Canyon in Altadena, CA.
Do you remember your first horse?
Yes, Dobbie, part Quarter Horse, part Arab.
Do you remember your first fall? No, I don’t remember my first fall.
Your first show?
My first show was at Eaton Canyon. But at my second show, also at Eaton Canyon, Larry Langer gave me my first blue ribbon. It was an equitation on the flat class on a school horse.
Your favorite thing about competing or working with competitors?
For me, success, improvement, and cooperation with and from the horse are number one. Same goes for working with competitors.
Your best memory of 2015 to date?
Winning a Level 7 class at Thermal and being champion for that week.
Your favorite thing about horses and what you do?
I love working with horses because they are all different and have minds of their own.
Your goals going forward – horsewise and otherwise?
My goals are to continue riding, teaching, and competing. I hope to do a lot more at the Grand Prix level.
A quote or keywords that best describe you...
I’m easy going and try to take everything in stride.

Jim Hagman MOORPARK, CA
Where were you born?
I was born in San Gabriel, CA.
Where did you ride for the first time?
First time I sat on a horse was at my grandfather’s Hagman Ranch in South Dakota – I was 7 years old.
Do you remember your first horse?
Her name was Tootsie. She was a pony and she was amazing.
Do you remember your first fall?
I remember that well! I don’t remember the name of the horse – it was a ranch horse in Thousand Oaks. The horse ran down a steep hill with me and then stopped really fast. I went flying off. I must have been about 9 or 10 years old.
Your first show?
It was a family affair. We were a trail riding family that learned how to jump. It was an ETI – Equestrian Trials Inc. – on Big Red and it was a flat class. I spent hours and days preparing for it. They didn’t have any kid classes and the rings were full of people. I didn’t get a ribbon but I was thrilled to get an honorable mention.
Your favorite thing about competing or working with competitors?
When I really see a rider and horse click and do well together. The first time they experience that ‘wow’ moment. That’s my favorite part whether I’m on the horse or working with a rider.
Your best memory of 2015 to date?
Oh my goodness...yikes. Probably Sydney Hutchins getting Best Child Rider at Del Mar or Katie

competing two horses that we bought young and made through our program, Vancouver and Barolo W. It was a career highlight and I was teary eyed.
Your favorite thing about horses and what you do?
I just absolutely love their personalities. They’re smart and they are each a little bit different. I love being in the ring, surrounded by all these great animals. The non-verbal interaction is incredible.
Your goals going forward – horsewise and otherwise?
We have a couple goals. Right now we are getting some nice hunters for Katie Gardener to compete on in the open divisions, including derbies and indoors so she can have a chance at a championship moment, and some for the grand prix ring for others.
A quote or keywords that best describe you... Positive. Helpful. Friendly.

Richard Spooner AGUA DOLCE, CA
Where were you born?
I was born in Redondo Beach, CA.
Where did you ride for the first time?
I was 10 years old and it was with Danielle Colbert Rainwater at the Four Seasons Farm in Huntington Beach, CA. The farm is now condominiums.
Do you remember your first horse?
Yes, Rusty. A quarter horse with the show name Business As Usual.
Do you remember your first fall?
I had a lot of falls and I don’t remember the first one. I used to fall off a lot, just like now. Some things never change.
Your first show?
I was 10 years old and I’d been riding for 3–6 months. It was a leadline class and I towered over all the six year olds. I wasn’t ready to be on my own on a horse for another year.
Your favorite thing about competing or working with competitors? Competing gives you the opportunity to see if all the work you’ve done is correct or incorrect. Competition gives you a yardstick with which you can measure your training.
Your best memory of 2015 to date?
You know what, when I won the Del Mar National Grand Prix. I had some injuries the year before and I had just started back halfway through Thermal. I would say Del Mar was the first time I could put my injuries behind me and go ride.
Your favorite thing about horses and what you do? They deal with you from a position of honesty. They aren’t interested in who you are or what you’ve
done. They’re willing to give 100% of themselves in their relationship with you. They just judge you in that moment, at that time. Every day for them is new. If you treat them honorably and justly, they will reciprocate. They deal with you the way you deal with them.
Your goals going forward – horsewise and otherwise?
My goals going forward horsewise is to try to keep getting the best possible athletes that I can so that I have the raw material to create the competitors I need and to continue to show at the top level of the sport. Also, to keep working on having a balance in my life between my competitive necessities as well as the rest of my life.
A quote or keywords that best describe you...
Well, when I was 10 years old, I rode so poorly, I was on the lunge line for about a year. At a Christmas party, I was voted most persistent. At the time, it was a bit of an insult but I would say that does sum up a lot of my personality. I have a tendency to persevere, to drive on.

Nick Haness TEMECULA, CA
Where were you born?
I was born in Mission Viejo, CA.
Where did you ride for the first time?
I rode my very first horse in a lesson when I was 3 years old at my local community equestrian center.
Do you remember your first horse?
The first horse that I owned was Duncan McCloud – 20 years old and a mixture of about everything. Photo © McCool
Do you remember your first fall?
All I remember is my trainer bought me a banana split after, and it was all worth while.
Your first show?
My first show was also memorable because I was 7 years old, on a 16.3 thoroughbred. My dad came to watch the class, but was obviously bored so he brought his newspaper. He opened it quickly and ripped the pages, which spooked my horse, causing him to take off around the arena. The announcer called the entire class to PLEASE WALK. My mom was having a heart attack and I thought it was fun. I was shortly thereafter excused from the class.
Your favorite thing about competing or working with competitors?
My favorite thing about competing is the rush of adrenaline and thrill that is involved. From a young age, competing and being the best I could be was natural to me, coming from a family of 5 boys, Being able to perfect a skill is very rewarding. I am fiercely competitive with myself but sometimes even more with my clients when they are showing. I want them to win more than anything.
Your best memory of 2015 to date?
My best Memory of 2015 would be developing my dream home and property with my growing number of adorable animals. As a kid, I asked for ponies and other
animals for Christmas but didn’t get any, we didn’t have a farm. I now have 4 miniature ponies, 6 alpacas, 1 pig, 3 cats, a dog, 4 goats, 4 western trail horses, and 20 beautiful show horses at my house.
Your favorite thing about horses and what you do?
My favorite thing about horses is the bond a person and a horse can create. It is rather magical to develop that bond with a horse from the beginning, and to see the outcome that good care and management and friendship can have between a human and a horse.
Your goals going forward – horsewise and otherwise?
I am currently doing a lot of business importing horses from Europe. I thoroughly enjoy this process and see it as a long term goal to continue for the next 10 years. I would love to focus on World Cup Finals or even Olympics when I am in my late 30s or early 40s. So right now I am hoping to save money to be financially secure enough to be able to travel and afford the demanding costs of competing at that level. My dream is to have a string of 2-3 grand prix horses and travel the world competing at the world’s finest show jumping venues.

JIM AND JAMES CARR James Carr Jr. Quality Horseshoeing 760.803.9180 | jcshoeing@gmail.com jcshoeing@gmail.com Born and raised in California, Jim Carr first thought of becoming a farrier while working on a ranch in Santa Barbara. The hardworking farrier he watched everyday at the ranch inspired him to enroll in school and make the leap into the profession. He has apprenticed with some of the most reputable farriers around and has since been serving the Rancho Santa Fe community for over 40 years. Jim said he is proud to have his son, James, pick up the reins and continue the family tradition.

DARREN SHAFFER Darren Shaffer Farrier 760.533.3257 darrenshafferfarrier@gmail.com Darren Shaffer got his start in the farrier industry in high school after moving to Temecula from Downey, CA. He was first introduced to horse shoeing by his friend’s dad and eventually became an apprentice for Jim Carr for three years starting in 1995. Darren has since been serving the Greater San Diego area, including Rancho Santa Fe, Del Mar, Orange County and occasionally Los Angeles, for the past 20 years. The profession initially appealed to Darren because of his love for horses and being in the outdoors. He said he enjoys the competitive feel of working hard so the horses can excel in competition. Darren said above everything else, he is in it for the horse and always puts his best effort into his work.

Comfortable Sophistication in an Equestrian Community BY PAM MALEY
O
nly one year has passed since Jerome Strack joined the staff of the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe as General Manager. Bringing with him 35 years of experience in hotel management, a genuine likability, and the boundless enthusiasm of an avid horse person, Strack is a perfect fit within the Rancho Santa Fe community.
When asked to enumerate some of his favorite things about the Inn, Strack recounted that he loves to hear how the comments from his guests echo his own feelings. “Guests often say; ‘The Inn has an intimate feel...We enjoy the comfortable sophistication of the Inn...Its idyllic surroundings make it a quietly romantic place, charming and tranquil...’It’s like being on

an island away from the daily hustle and bustle, where time seems to stand still.’ And I agree.” In discussing the highlights of the surrounding area, Strack was quick to point out the equestrian ambience, “This is truly an equestrian community. The Inn is two miles from the San Diego Polo Club, six miles from Del Mar Racetrack, and four miles from the Del Mar Horse Park Equestrian Facility.” There are also miles of lovely hiking trails, and it’s six miles from beautiful Solana Beach. But for those who enjoy a good game of golf, one of the most outstanding benefits to being a guest at the Inn, is access to the private Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club. Named one of the top 20 best golf venues by Golf Digest Magazine, and famous for its eminently walkable design, the club is open only to members and their guests, or to guests of the Inn. DELIGHTFUL COMMUNITY GATHERINGS To keep the Inn at the heart of the community, Strack enjoys organizing events that bring the families of Rancho Santa Fe to the hotel. The beautiful lawn was the setting for a recent polo demonstration, and, to the delight of the locals, he put in a temporary ice skating rink last winter, an event that will be repeated in ‘cold seasons’ to come. In sharing his favorite ‘Inn’ stories from his first year, Strack described driving through the community be106 | T h e I n n a t R a n c h o S a n t a F e
fore Halloween, passing lovely gated estates, “And I wondered: where do the children trick or treat? So I built a haunted house on the hotel grounds and invited the community. We expected maybe twenty or thirty children to show up, but three hundred people came - children as well as parents, all in costume. It turned out to be a great party!” Wanting to recreate the family spirit of an old-fashioned Christmas, Strack brought in a thirty-foot tree and organized a party with decorations, elves, Santa Claus, and marshmallows to roast. Again, the party exceeded expectations, as five hundred guests came to celebrate the holiday event. STEEPED IN RANCHO SANTA FE’S HISTORY In 1840, before California statehood, Rancho Santa Fe was a land grant from Mexico called Rancho San Dieguito. By the turn of the century the property had been purchased by the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railroad for the planting of hundreds of thousands of eucalyptus trees to produce timber for railroad ties. But just over fifteen years later the project had proven to be a failure, and the railroad began planning a rural residential community. A land use consultant was hired in 1920, and taking advantage of the topography, he designed a network of winding roads to maximize the beautiful changing views. He also designed a Beaux-Arts style village at the center of the community, and surrounded it with
large residential lots. Two years later, an architectural firm began the work of designing buildings, and noted architect Lilian Rice, a practitioner of the Spanish Revival style of architecture, took over to create, in her words, “a community that would contain the simplicity and charm of a Spanish village.” On a hill overlooking the village, Rice designed a small guest house where prospective residential buyers could stay. Completed in 1923, it was called La Morada, ‘house of many rooms.’ Over the 90 years since then, while maintaining its character, the small guest house now called The Inn at Rancho Santa Fe, has grown to twenty-three acres, with thirteen cottages containing eighty rooms, and twenty-one full residences. Because the amazing grounds and landscaping are so much a part of the hotel’s ambience, each guest room has its own private outdoor space, to enjoy quiet moments amid the lush surroundings. The residences at the periphery of the Inn property vary in size from 900 to 3500 square feet, and are very much in demand. All are leased, most on long-term leases, with four of them kept available for short-term leases, though none shorter than thirty-days.
A FOXY DISCOVERY In the 1950’s the Inn came under the ownership of the Royce family, and it remained in their hands until 2012, when it was purchased by its present owner, JMI Realty, who initiated a $12 million renovation. All rooms were refurbished, and the restaurant, called Morada in honor of the Inn’s beginnings, was relocated to the front of the hotel to take advantage of the large terrace and the lush green front lawn that is the pride and joy of the Inn. When the restaurant moved, the lovely original bar didn’t move with it. Wanting to preserve its history, General Manager Strack (himself a foxhunter) did some research and found that in the 1960s there had been a Rancho Santa Fe Hunt Club, which is now located in Temecula. To honor that heritage, Strack used the original bar to create a whiskey bar that he named The Huntsman, complete with foxhunting decor, often visited by guests in their riding clothes. After a remarkable first year, Strack has certainly been a wonderful addition to the Inn. With his innovation and the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe’s superb offerings, the hotel is an endearing entity for its guests and the community.

Q&A Kimerlee Curyl Photography
“May wild things be free... F O R E V E R” kc What originally brought you to the site “Return to Freedom” where you began your immersion into wild horse photography? This is an ironic story, and I’ll try to keep it brief, but that may not be easy. I got my mare in 2004 and immediately knew, I could be a better horsewoman for her if I understood her language better. I was already a practicing natural horsemanship student, but knew the ultimate teachers would be wild horses. A friend had been one of the directors on Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron movie and she had mentioned he had been given to a sanctuary where wild horses were living in family bands. I had been searching all over the internet for information on how to get to wild horses, at that time the internet was not nearly as informative as it is today. I also was having a hard time getting my friend to commit to a day we could go up the this sanctuary, whose name she didn’t remember. I was searching for that as well, and kept coming up empty handed. This was back in the day of catalogs arriving in droves in your mailbox(something I no longer partake in) and a new one to me had arrived called Isabella Bird, I opened the cover and there on the first page was a story on Neda and her Sanctuary-Return to Freedom...I remember screaming and my eye filling with tears. I was on the internet within seconds and calling the sanctuary. It STILL took a couple weeks to make something happen, I had left numerous messages but wasn’t hearing back. I didn’t give up and finally one day Neda got on the phone with me, I went to take a day clinic with her and the rest is a long long history. I knew the
moment I was driving into the sanctuary, even said to everyone in the car with me...”my life is about to change, I can feel it”. I left a 15+ year long dream of having an acting career and never looked back. Do you think the horses know that they are being photographed? Meaning do you feel they “pose” for you? Not really, not with the wild ones. They accept me, and it’s that acceptance that allows their natural being to come through. Some horses just have a stronger presence than others. I used to photograph famous stallions and there certainly were some that loved to “show off” in some respect. But even much of their exuberance was orchestrated by human intervention, getting them to puff up, running them around etc. With wild horses you get zero chance of posing any shot or “making” anything happen What is the most spiritual moment you have had on assignment? Gosh I have had so many, each and every trip. Most of them are exhilarating, but some are also heartbreaking. I have seen a lot out there. You wouldn’t think finding white (grey) stallions is difficult but it can be depending on where you are. I had a couple great days shooting in the Great Divide Basin of Wyoming. Adobe Town, I didn’t think was too far away and the area is know for gorgeous, Spanish type grey horses. So the drive began. That was most certainly this stallion, this unicorn, this knight in shining armor of a noble, gentle and strong mustang. I named him Vanishing Grace, that is what these magnificent creatures are if we don’t act on their behalf to protect them. Where was the most unique place you have photographed horses and why? I have been out in the wild and visited about 20 different HMA’s. They are all magical and all unique. I think the “most” unique would have to be the rare back to more horses before light was lost. Clients say it best*:... I recommend her unreservedly to anyone who wants to improve the quality of life or performance of their equine partners... ... gets Terrific Results...... he won The Classic the following week! ...... I wish I had a video to show you the “miracle” transformation taking place before my eyes ...... a stand-out in terms of her forthrightness, honesty, and genuine care for each animal’s well being ...*Q. Why Equine Bodywork? A. It’s a fact: horses are flight animals. Showing early signs of pain goes against their survival instinct. By the time a horse outwardly starts showing signs of (muscle) soreness/pain, things have been brewing for much longer. Addressing body soreness through equine bodywork gives the horse an opportunity to use its body correctly which improves performance and boosts confidence.Solution. New clients start out with a highly effective ‘ramp it up’ (3 sessions in 2 weeks) program. Once the ‘old, build-up restrictive layers’ have been ‘stripped away’, Smit follows up with regularly scheduled sessions. The maintenance bodywork focuses on early detection. By addressing the issues aims to keep a balanced muscular system in check. Smit’s well rounded equestrian background started at age 12 in Holland where she began riding and showing in dressage, showjumping and cross country. Later, she also successfully re-trained problem horses, exercised show jumpers and accompanied them at the show circuit in Holland and Belgium. Started her equine bodywork practice in 1999.Regarding her equine bodywork practice Smit states: ‘It is an honor and incredibly rewarding, to work with these dedicated riders/trainers. Whether they compete at a World cup/Grand Prix level, beginner, or anywhere in between.’ Smit is results oriented and devoted to her work. To her there is no better feeling than knowing she has been part of an other success story. *Full testimonials & additional info: www.Equinesse.com - putting the art of finesse - in Equine Bodywork

LEGEND 862.404.5118 Legend Injectable Solution is indicated in the treatment of joint dysfunction of the carpus or fetlock in horses due to non-infectious synovitis associated with equine osteoarthritis. The primary objective of equine joint therapy should be to block the further release of inflammatory mediators while decreasing the effect of the mediators already released. In field studies, overall clinical improvement was judged to be excellent or good in 90% of the cases treated intravenously with Legend and 96% of those treated intra-articularly with Legend. “Because comfort makes a difference.”
By combining modern textile technology and traditional Chinese medicine which is supported by scientific studies, Back on Track creates products that help people, horses and dogs achieve a more active and comfortable life. Back on Track’s joint and muscle support are all made of functional textiles with heat reflective properties. The textile is a synergy of ancient Chinese experience and modern scientific textile technology. During the manufacturing of polyester- or polyester fibers, the ceramic particles are fused into the fibers. When heated, the ceramic particles radiate heat back towards the body. This reflected heat is long-wave heat radiation, which is also known as long wave infrared radiation. Since the ceramic particles are melted into the threads they can never wash out, and the products will always be effective.

hose who spend a majority of their time in the world of show jumping need no introduction to Leopoldo Palacios. For several decades Palacios has played an integral role in the sport. He has been to countless national and international events, yet not sat in a saddle or picked up the reins. However, thousands of show jumpers have and continue to be influenced by his work. Palacios, originally from Brazil, is an internationallyacclaimed course designer. Highly decorated in this field, he has not only designed the tracks for Olympic Games, Pan American Games, FEI World Cup Finals and World Equestrian Games but as Course Director for the FEI, he co-founded the Aachen School of Equestrian Arts. 128 | L e o p o l d o P a l a c i o s

Above and beyond his course design prowess he is completely devoted to the sport. He works tirelessly discussing, planning, meeting, traveling and consulting with the world’s most important equestrian show venues and federations. From Spruce Meadows in Calgary to Bromont in Quebec, from London, England for the Olympics to Lausanne, Switzerland where he served as Second Vice President for the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), Palacios’ presence positively influences show jumping from the ground up. Interacting with Palacios about the sport, the course or the horse is an infectious experience; he is incredibly passionate and animated. An excerpt of our inspirational conversation is below.
