Edward Quinn (1920-1997) lived and worked as photographer on the Côte d’Azur. During the “Golden Fifties” this was the playground of celebrities from the world of show biz, art and business. The rich and the famous came to the Riviera to congregate and relax. But the movie stars knew how much their off-screen image counted and Quinn more than anyone else was at the right place at the right time being able to get spontaneous and enchanting images. They catch the unique charm, sophistication and chic of a legendary era. His nephew Wolfgang and Ursula Frei are taking care of the extensive portfolio. Photos for media, exhibitions and collectors The archive consists of more than 100‘000 negatives, many of which have never been printed or published. Biography The Irish-born Edward Quinn (1920 -1997) lived and worked on the French Riviera since the fifties. His apprentice years as photographer coincided with the rise of the Côte d’Azur as a jet-set destination for film stars, millionaires and royalty, thanks largely to the fame of Brigitte Bardot and Princess Grace. His portraits from these years caught the flavour of the glamorous post-war guilt-free world, and remain fresh, elegant and informal. His friendship with Picasso began in 1951 and lasted until the artist’s death in 1973. During those twenty years an extensive photographic opus evolved around Picasso–and included his own contribution–which found its expression in numerous exhibitions and in four books and three films. In the early 1970s Quinn took a long trip to Ireland with his camera to record Dublin and its people. The result was „James Joyce’s Dublin“, a book in which photos were matched with selected quotations from Joyce’s works. Motivated by his association with Picasso, Quinn concentrated more and more since the sixties on cooperation with a number of artists to which, amongst others, Max Ernst, Alexander Calder, Francis Bacon, Salvador Dalí and David Hockney belonged. A similar intensive association as the one with Picasso bound him since the late eighties to Georg Baselitz. At the beginning of the nineties, Quinn moved to Lake Zurich and lived there, until his death in 1997, with his Swiss wife Gret who continued to catalogue the comprehensive “Edward Quinn Archive.” 2007 the new book “Riviera Cocktail” and two years later “Stars and Cars of the ‘50s” were published.
