It is once again a great pleasure to extend my warmest welcome to you here at King Abdulaziz Racecourse for the sixth renewal of the $20million Saudi Cup and a world-class exhibition of horseracing and jockeyship.
This weekend we will be showcasing the best Thoroughbreds and Purebred Arabian equine athletes on the global stage, and I am delighted to have so many of the leading trainers, jockeys and owners with us here in Saudi Arabia for this ever-evolving event.
Today we proudly celebrate the talent of some of the world’s leading riders in the Diriyah International Jockeys’ Challenge and you will see them go head-to-head in four of our eight races. We welcome back Hollie Doyle, Maryline Eon and Sibylle Vogt who have competed before, and say hello for the first time to the likes of James McDonald and John Valezquez.
The Saudi Cup has been won twice by the USA, Japan and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia since it was first staged in 2020. I am delighted to see all of those nations represented in the race this year, along with the global superstar that is Romantic Warrior. I extend a warm welcome to his connections and all from Hong Kong.
Japanese trainer, Yoshito Yahagi has enjoyed immense success at this meeting and counts a Saudi Cup win amongst his haul having won with Panthalassa two years ago. It is a pleasure to welcome him back with three runners and I look forward to seeing how last year’s Saudi Derby winner Forever Young performs in The Saudi Cup.
Overall Japan have a strong representation in the main race with four runners in total and The Saudi Cup this year really does have a far-reaching global feel.
There is Facteur Cheval coming across from France, and we also welcome back Kenny McPeek’s Rattle N Roll after he gained his slot in the race with victory here last month in the Group Three Custodian Of The Two Holy Mosques.
I am proud to say we have a very strong local challenge with Wait To Excel and Wootton’sun looking to step forward from their runs behind Rattle N Roll. Defunded also represents local connections along with two exciting horses from Argentina who have just arrived in El Kodigo and Intense For Me.
I have also been very proud of the upgrades we have announced to these two days of racing which has enhanced its’ placing as the richest weekend of racing in the world. Both the Longines Red Sea Turf Handicap and the Riyadh Dirt Sprint presented by Saudi National Bank have both been elevated to Group 2 status, and the latter now carries $2million in prize money.
I wish all participants and all racegoers a very enjoyable and memorable time here at King Abdulaziz Racecourse.

INTERNATIONAL JOCKEYS’ CHALLENGE
The world-class Diriyah International Jockeys’ Challenge is made up of seven international women, two locally-based men and five international men competing individually for a share of a $100,000 prize fund. All races consist of 14 runners, and jockeys will earn points based on their finishing position as well as taking home 15 per cent of the $400,000 prize money from each individual race. 14 RUNNERS & RIDERS
The conditions of each event are as below and will be staged as races two, three, five and six on today’s card.
Points are awarded over the four races, two of which are staged on dirt and two on turf, as follows:
The jockey with the most points after the four races will be crowned the winner. If a dead heat occurs in a race, the points for the two places are added together, divided by two and shared between the two jockeys.
If the total number of points won by the jockeys over the course of the competition results in a tie, there will be a countback on the number of winners and the jockey with the most winners will be adjudged the winner overall.

Maryline Eon (FR)
Maryline returns to defend her crown 12 months on from beating the likes of Ryan Moore, Damian Oliver, Saffie Osborne and Rachel Venniker to win the 2024 International Jockeys’ Challenge. Eon has consistently been in the top rankings for female jockeys in France, having initially raced over both Jumps and on the Flat. After switching attentions to the Flat, she made an immediate impact and was the first female to ride in the French Oaks – the Prix de Diane – in 2017 when finishing eighth aboard Yellow Storm. The same year she also took top honours in the Lady Jockeys’ Thoroughbred World Championships in Sweden.
Rachel King (AUS)
British-born King turned her back on an uneventful career as an amateur and apprentice in her homeland to become a star in Australia where she is a title-winning and multiple Group 1 winning-rider. King broke through at the top level in October 2018 aboard Maid Of Heaven in the Spring Champion Stakes. Her talent has straddled both the Sydney and Melbourne jurisdictions with further top-flight success coming at the 2023 Spring Racing Carnival with Ozzmosis in the Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington. King’s Australian success has opened international doors with spells in Japan having followed, and she has also taken part in jockeys’ challenges in Japan as well as both Hong Kong and the United Kingdom.
Hollie Doyle (UK)
Doyle returns to contest her second IJC having featured among the 2021 field and she is no stranger to success in Saudi Arabia. A day after her experience of the track in the IJC, she struck on Saudi Cup night itself with success aboard True Self for Irish maestro Willie Mullins in the 2021 Neom Turf Cup. The 28-year-old has been a trailblazer throughout her career and in 2019 set a record for the numbers of British winners ridden in a calendar year by a female jockey with 116 victories. As well as her domestic success, Doyle has ridden worldwide with experience of Japan, Hong Kong and Australia over the last 18 months.
Manami Nagashima (JPN)
A rising star of the Japanese jockeys’ ranks, Nagashima only made her professional debut in 2021 and is already the highest-rated female jockey in her homeland. In just four seasons she has risen from 88th position in her maiden year to sit in 30th place in the current standings. The 22-year-old landed a first Graded win last year in the Mermaid Stakes aboard Alice Verite and has also matched the achievements of Nanako Fujita by becoming just the second female rider to break through the 100-winners barrier.
James McDonald (AUS)
McDonald is currently rated the World’s Best Jockey and the New Zealand-born rider –known to many as ‘J-Mac’ – has partnered nearly 1700 winners making him one of the most successful jockeys in Australia. The pilot of the 2021 Melbourne Cup winner Verry Elleegant, McDonald fired home an astonishing 11 winners at last November’s Flemington meeting. His talent has spread far further than the southern hemisphere and he has enjoyed time in the United Kingdom and Hong Kong, where he has struck up an amazing association with Romantic Warrior. Together than have landed three Hong Kong Cups, a Cox Plate, a Yasuda Kinen and the world’s leading all-time prize-money earner recently scooped the Jebel Hatta in Dubai to help give J-Mac a treble on his first Meydan outing.
Kelly Myers (NZ)
Hailing from a successful racing family, there was an inevitability that Myers would graduate towards the same field and she has carved out a successful career in the saddle which has yielded over 700 winners including three victories in the New Zealand Cup. Myers’s first winner came just days after her initial ride in 2005 aboard Breaker Bay at Wellington and her first Group success was courtesy of Southern Lord in November 2012. Her love affair with the New Zealand Cup continues to this day and as recently as November she was second in it again aboard Beavertown Boy.
Oisin Murphy (UK)
Irish-born Murphy needs little introduction as a four-time British champion jockey, and the winner of multiple Group 1 races including two English Classics. A graduate of the ponyriding and show jumping circuits, Murphy started life with renowned talent scout, trainer Andrew Balding, and was crowned champion apprentice in 2014. Group 1 success was naturally to follow and having been appointed leading rider to Qatar Racing in 2016 he was to provide them with Classic success as he guided Kameko to victory in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket in 2020. The 29-year-old has ridden top-level winners, not just in the UK, but also in Ireland, France, Hong Kong, Canada, America, the UAE and Japan. He has been the leading rider in Britain in 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2024.
Tadgh O’Shea (UAE)
O’Shea has come a long way since his success in the 1998 Irish Apprentice title race and a brilliant career forged in the UAE saw him land the biggest prize of all with victory in last year’s Dubai World Cup aboard Laurel River. That was part of a magical night for O’Shea which also provided a big-race double courtesy of Tuz in the Golden Shaheen. He partnered his first winner in the UAE in 2001 which cemented his future in Dubai. He has ridden winners for many different trainers there and in the 2019-20 season he broke Richard Hills’ record of 503 wins to become the region’s most prolific rider. In addition to victory in the Dubai World Cup, O’Shea was also crowed the UAE champion jockey for the 12th time in March.
Christophe Soumillon (FR)
The Belgian-born ace is renowned as a worldclass pilot and the 11-times French champion has landed some of the most significant events round the globe. Success came relatively early to the 43-year-old with Dalakhani providing him with the first of two Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe victories in 2003. A total of 14 French Classics have gone his way, but success has not been limited to the Flat as he also landed the French Champion Hurdle in 2013. Cirrus Des Aigles has helped him make his mark in England with wins in Champion Stakes and Coronation Cup, while he landed the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes last summer aboard Goliath. The dual Dubai World Cup-winning rider also boasts multiple topclass wins in Japan, Hong Kong and America.
John Velazquez (USA)
The Puerto Rico-born Velazquez heads into Saudi Arabia as one of North America’s alltime greats having broken many records and set new trends in a career which got underway in 1990. Fresh from a debut win in his native land, Velazquez was soon to relocate to New York where he rewrote the history books and continues to excel, in and out of the saddle, at the age of 53. He has ridden over 6600 career wins and amassed nearly $500 million in purse earnings. Velazquez is the winner of six Classic races including three Kentucky Derbies and has collected a stunning 21 wins at the prestigious Breeders’ Cup.
Sofia Vives (CAN/USA)
Vives sat on her first horse aged 10-years-old and from there was hooked. Taught by her father Lazaro, a former jockey who worked for 20 years for dual Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse, how to ride, the Florida native is the current Sovereign Award winner in Canada for Outstanding Apprentice Jockey and is among the leading jockeys at two Thoroughbred tracks located in Ontario. The 22-year-old netted 100 winners in Canada in 2023 to finish fourth in the Woodbine standings and earned her first Graded Stakes victory in June last year. A success that was quickly followed by a win aboard Kin’s Concerto in the valuable Woodbine Oaks.
Sibylle Vogt (GER)
The German-based rider returns to Riyadh having been crowned IJC champion in 2020 and makes her third appearance overall after also starring in 2021. The 29-year-old Swiss native is currently based with Peter Schiergen in Cologne and gained international recognition with her win here five years ago, when she outshone the likes of Frankie Dettori, Mike Smith and Yutaka Take. Following her second appearance at King Abdulaziz Racecourse she returned to Germany to win their 1000 Guineas that summer, while 2024 saw Vogt land several Group-race wins in Europe including a valuable two-year-old race, the Pries der Winterkonigin, aboard Nicoreni.
Ricardo Ferreira (KSA) Mohammed Aldaham (KSA)
Now in his fourth season in Riyadh, the Portuguese-born Ferreira spent eight years riding in Spain, where he was twice crowned Champion Jockey, before making his way to the Middle East. He made an immediate impact here with wins on the likes of Cold Front and Rock Sound and last month celebrated 100 winners in the Kingdom. Ferreira dominated the King’s Cups meeting the previous month and ended December with an impressive haul of 18 winners. He also excelled at the recent Custodian Of The Two Holy Mosques meeting with strikes on Mhally (Saudi Derby Qualifier), Ameerat Alzamaan (1000 Guineas) and Malyan (Turf Sprint Qualifier).
The local rider has enjoyed a stellar season in Riyadh. He is another in the mix to be champion jockey and rides in the IJC for the first time. Many of his winners have come via his close association with trainer Thamer Aldaihani, who himself will be crowned champion trainer for the campaign next month. Aldaihani’s charge, Uncle is one of those to have provided Aldaham with bigrace success in last month’s Listed King Faisal Cup while in 2024 he took out a win in the Crown Prince Cup aboard Wootton’sun and the domestic Group 2 the Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Cup on Mazyuna.

TUWAIQ CUP PRESENTED BY LUCID FACTS AND STATS
As the $500,000 Tuwaiq Cup presented by Luicid enters a third year it has assembled a collection of runners befitting its status as a natural home for Saudi Arabia’s leading thoroughbreds.
Staged over the same 1800-metre course and distance as Saturday’s feature, The Saudi Cup, the Tuwaiq is a relatively new innovation, but is bursting with a quality field of 18, featuring many names which have been prominent in the major races throughout the Ta’if and Riyadh racing seasons.
Badr (USA) scooped top honours in the Tuwaiq 12 months ago and is back once again to face a host of rivals who were ahead of him in The Saudi Cup trial, the Group 3 Custodian of The Two Holy Mosques, last month.
Rattle N Roll (USA), trained by prominent US trainer, Kenny McPeek, was first across the line that day and was chased home by local runners Wait To Excel (GB) and Wootton’sun (FR). All three of those will feature in tomorrow’s Saudi Cup, with the majority of the Custodian field reopposing in the Tuwaiq.
Badr scorched home by five lengths in this race last year to beat Final Destination (GB) into second place and they will again do battle along with Mr Trinket (IRE), who finished down the field but was fourth in the Custodian of The Mosques.
The form of that race will also be advertised by Almaan (USA), E J Won The Cup (USA), Waqtuk (USA), Akfeek (USA), Ajwadi (GB) Scotland Yard (USA) and Badr himself who crossed the line in 17th place.
E J Won The Cup was a last-time starter for Doug O’Neill but will now race for local connections having transferred to KSA in the ownership of Prince Faisal Bin Khaled Bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud.
The St. Louis, Turf Paradise and Texas Derby winner deserves plenty of credit for his run the Custodian as he set serious fractions before weakening to sixth place having set the race up for the deep closers.
Scotland Yard has had two previous goes in The Saudi Cup without figuring and bids to bounce back from his last run in the Custodian. However, Nicholas Bachalard’s 6-year old had been impressive early on in the season with two wins here in Riyadh including his victory in the Saeed Al Majed Cup.
Haqeet (USA) arrives here unexposed after just six starts but was just sixth to Ajwadi (GB) when last seen in a domestic Group 2.
Lucas Gaitan’s Alwaqqad (USA) is also a notable runner having landed his first three races including the Saudi Derby qualifier before grabbing third behind Man Of The Night in open company.

AL MNEEFAH CUP PRESENTED BY MINISTRY OF CULTURE FACTS AND STATS
The Group 1 Al Mneefah Cup presented by Ministry of Culture brings together some of the best Purebred Arabian turf horses in the world to race over 2100m at The Saudi Cup.
Local star Asfan Al Khalediah (KSA) is back once in a bid to repeat his 2023 success having last year switched to dirt to win the other Arabian Group 1 at the fixture – the Obaiyah Arabian Classic presented by Diriyah.
The six-year-old grey was then third to stablemate Tilal Al Khalediah (KSA) at the Dubai World Cup meeting and won on his latest start in January in the Prince Sultan International Cup, a Group 1PA over 1800m, beating the reopposing Turki Al Khalediah (KSA) and Mostabsil Al Khalediah (KSA).
Leading the overseas challenge is the UAE owned and trained RB Kingmaker (USA). Last month he was an impressive winner of a prep race on Abu Dhabi’s turf track over 2200m, where he’d won a Group 1PA over the same distance a year ago.
Like Asfan Al Khalediah, Suny Du Loup (FR), now running for Oman, is equally effective on dirt and turf, and scored at the highest level last season in Round 3 of the Al Maktoum Challenge over 2000m in Dubai.
French trained and UAE owned, Are’ej (FR) won the Juments in ParisLongchamp, the equivalent of the 2000m Arabian Oaks. She comes here having placed third in a preparatory race on the all-weather in Pau, a race often used by the French trainers for horses aimed at the Saudi Cup.
Also from France, but Saudi owned, is Mutbahy Athbah (FR) – a Group 1PA winner over 2200m on Turf in France and he was third in this race last year.
From Qatar there are two young horses, Nabucco Al Maury (FR) and Molfit (FR).
Nabucco Al Maury was a runner-up in a Group 1PA in France and was a very close fourth in the hotly contested Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani Trophy last month.
Molfit (FR) was further behind that day but had previously been placed in both the UK and UAE Arabian Derbys and the French Arabian Breeders Challenge Classic from 2000m to 2200m.
Jade De Faust (FR) started her career in France where she was Group 3PA placed and won over 1600m, however since arriving in Saudi Arabia she has won three times in Ta’if and Riyadh over shorter distances. This will be her first attempt at 2100m but she comes here in good form.
Sharfa Alhezam (KSA), HM Alnasserallah (FR) and Rakoud Al Ansari (KSA) were the first three home in the Al Mneefah Qualifier held over course and distance last month. They are all young horses open to further improvement.
