History

I

o f p o n y f in a l s

n 1959, the British National Pony Society challenged American Pony riders under age 17 to an International Pony Hunter Competition. First held at the prestigious National Horse Show in New York City, the best U.S. ponies and riders met headto-head with the best British ponies and riders in the small and large divisions. The first competition emphasized conformation and under saddle performance. Jumping ability was tested over two fences and counted for 20 percent of the final score. The American riders in this inaugural competition were narrowly defeated 10-9. Two years later, the British National Pony Society hosted the competition. The American competitors prepared by spending a rigorous two weeks at the famed U.S. Equestrian Center in Gladstone, NJ. The training proved beneficial, as the U.S. returned with the trophy by a score of 13-9. In 1967 the United States Equestrian Federation (formally AHSA) created the Pony Finals as a national event, open to all members of the USEF who met the qualifying criteria. The current criteria specifies that a pony must win a championship in an “A” rated Regular Hunter Pony section, three reserve championships in “A” rated Regular Hunter Pony section, or 1 8 // U S Po n y F i n a l s

a championship or reserve championship in an “AA” rated Hunter Pony section. A Green Hunter pony may qualify by winning a championship or reserve championship in an “A” or “AA” rated Green Hunter pony section. Since 1984, the finals have included the popular Pony Medal Championships, an equitation competition. Riders qualify for the equitation finals by winning a blue ribbon or by accumulating 30 points in an US Pony Medal qualifying class. The 2001 US Pony Finals marked the addition of the National Pony Jumper Championships. Ponies and riders qualify by being one of the top four-rider/pony combinations in their zone with the highest national points in the qualifying period. Today the US Pony Finals Championships are the most prestigious and celebrated events of their kind in the United States. The Hunter Pony is a three-phase competition judging the pony’s conformation, way of moving under saddle and fence jumping ability. The Pony Medal Championships test young riders in a head-to-head competition judging their ability to compete over a technical and demanding course of fences. This six-day championship event hosts more than 500 young riders and their talented mounts as well as interested spectators and families. Photos: USEF Archives

From the chairman

Dear Riders, Parents, and Trainers, Welcome to the 2012 US National Pony Finals! Congratulations to all of you riders qualifying for and participating in this challenging, competitive National Championship event. Whether you are here to show a green pony, a pony in the regular hunter section, a pony jumper in the team competition, to test yourself in the equitation ring on Sunday… or to do all or none of the above… we are all here to have fun! Those who are competing will be trying to do their personal best in the National Championship format, and to have a great time at the one-of-a-kind experience that is Pony Finals. We look forward to this event as a place where all who attend can have a wonderful time and also where pony riders have the opportunity to grow as true horsemen and

sportsmen during the busy, fun filled week of horse showing and many sponsored activities. We are so fortunate to have the Kentucky Horse Park for our venue… now the preferred location for many of the top equestrian events in our country. It is incredible to be competing in the same rings, to be practicing in the same schooling areas as Olympians and Olympic hopefuls only weeks before! If you use your imagination as you pass the new stadium, you can almost feel they are watching and cheering you on! So, young riders, do your best, and try to win a coveted ribbon. But also cheer on your Zone Pony Jumper team. Cheer on your friends! Join in all of the activities that are available. Eat ice cream, pizza, and chocolate fondue. Check out the contents of your pony bag, and read and reread your yearbook. Tour Lexington and discover the homes of so many famous race horses. Honor yourself and respect your peers; thank your parents and trainers… you would not be here without them. Practice good sportsmanship, good horsemanship and kindness to your pony. Notice and appreciate all who make this spectacular event available to you. This is your week. Embrace it, enjoy it, be successful, and have fun! We extend our personal thanks to the Pony Hunter Task Force, Lauren Fahey, Hugh Kincannon, Bobby Murphy, and all of the many people that make this event so incredibly special. And we wish good luck to you all. - David Wright and Sissie Anderton
