Competing at the Olympics was a dream come true, and Rafalca is the horse that gave me that opportunity. From the beginning, she was a very special horse, so trainable and focused, but mostly, she has a huge heart and gives her all everyday. While she gives so much to me, I make sure that she and my other horses get the best of everything, including Platinum. Platinum gives me the competitive edge, helping to maintain their soundness and health. The horses love it, and the Paks make supplementing so easy, especially when traveling so much. Dressage can be a complex discipline, but Platinum Paks bring simplicity to our program.

FEI President Once again I am delighted to welcome you to the FEI North American Jumping, Dressage, Eventing, Reining and Endurance Championships for Young Riders and Juniors 2014 at Lexington, Kentucky. What an extraordinary event this is, as young people from all across the continent come together for a week of top-class competition at a venue that provides the perfect setting for any equestrian activity. These Championships have come a very long way since they were first staged as an Eventing challenge between the United States of America and Canada back in 1974. Dressage was included in 1981, and when Jumping joined the schedule in 1982 the first complete Young Riders Championship was staged in British Columbia, Canada. It was another 24 years before the Juniors came onboard, while the schedule was further expanded with the inclusion of Reining in 2008 and Endurance in 2011. The scale of these Championships is enormous, requiring masterful organisational ability due to the extremely busy competition schedule and the number of athletes and horses involved. Last year we saw a total of 222 athletes from USA, Canada and Mexico line out in the five disciplines, with 20 sets of medals distributed. It is no mean feat to make all this happen, and I urge all our young competitors to express their appreciation to the organisers and officials, and to the many volunteers who give so freely of their time, skills and presence in order to ensure you are provided with a great week of quality competition. Many of North America’s equestrian stars have used these Championships as a stepping-stone during their early careers, but they didn’t all make it onto the podium. However the experience they gained proved invaluable over the following years as they continued to learn about the ups and downs that are part of the life of any top sportsman or sportswoman. As you follow in their footsteps, I wish all the athletes the very best of luck this week. And, on behalf of the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI), I send my very best wishes to the organisers, officials, spectators, supporters and volunteers for a memorable and thoroughly enjoyable sporting event.

ADEQUAN/FEI NORTH AMERICAN JUNIOR & YOUNG RIDER CHAMPIONSHIPS
PRESENTED BY GOTHAM NORTH
Letter from
USEF Welcome to the 40th Anniversary of the Adequan/FEI North American Junior & Young Rider Championships presented by Gotham North. The United States Equestrian Federation is proud to be a part of this premier equestrian competition in North America. Young equestrians gather from all parts of the United States, as well as Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and the Caribbean Islands to vie for Team and Individual FEI medals in the three Olympic equestrian disciplines of jumping, dressage, and eventing, as well as the FEI World Equestrian Games disciplines of endurance and reining. The world-class venue at the Kentucky Horse Park will serve as the event’s stage for the fifth consecutive year in 2014. These championships are vitally important to the development of the riders ages 14 to 21 who will likely go on to represent their countries in future international competitions. It is our privilege to present these riders with the opportunity to showcase their talents at an international championship, many of whom will be experiencing this level of competition for the first time. This year we share the Kentucky Horse Park with the U.S. Pony Club Festival, a week-long celebration of Pony Club, held every three years. Running the two events concurrently provides a unique opportunity to expose equestrian enthusiasts to the championship level competition exhibited at the NAJYRC. It would not be possible to host these championships without our sponsors and supporters, and we are extremely grateful to them for their continued support. Only through their generosity and valuable contributions are we able to present this incredible event for our future generation of top international riders. We especially thank all of the volunteers, staff and officials who work tirelessly to ensure that this event is fair, safe, and memorable for everyone involved. Good luck to all the competitors, and have a great and rewarding time! With Regard,
Chrystine J. Tauber President

Letter from
Kentucky Horse Park Dear Participants: We’re are delighted to welcome the Adequan FEI North American Junior and Young Rider Championships, presented by Gotham North, back to the Kentucky Horse Park in 2014! Whether you are competing here for the first time, or are a returning competitor, we know that you will leave with memories. We hope you, your families, friends, and, of course, your horses have a very special time here during the week. As you know, the Kentucky Horse Park hosted the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games in 2010. You will be competing in an Olympic-caliber facility that most would say is among the finest in the world, where many of the best riders and horses in the world have competed. Now we will add your name an your horse to that list. You are a part of the Kentucky Horse Park family and, therefore, please make the park your own. If you have been here before or experiencing the park for the first time, be sure to explore or re-explore everything that makes this a most special place. Please take the time to see our daily equine entertainment attractings such as the Horses of the World and the Hall of Champions presentations. We welcome you to visit the International Museum of th Horse, a Smithsonian Affiliate, arguably the most complete and fascinating equine related museum in the world. You can also visit the offices of the United States Equestrian Federation, the United States Hunter Jumper Association, the American Saddlebred Museum, the United States Dressage Federation, and many others, all headquartered here at the park’s National Horse Center. So have a wonderful time, enjoy every moment, and please accept our best wishes for a safe, fair, vigorous and successful competition! Sincerely,
Ted Nicholson Interim Executive Director

The
History The NAJYRC began in 1974 as an eventing challenge between the United States and Canada. The inaugural event was called the North American Junior Team Championships and was held in Jokers Hill, Ontario. In 1981, a dressage championship was added, and the event obtained FEI recognition. Jumping was added in 1982, producing the first full championships, held in Maple Ridge, British Columbia. During the mid-1980s the
competition
was
referred to as the Continental Championships. In 1985, the championships landed at Martha Simpson
and Linda Buonanno’s Tempel Farm for the first time. Known as the “father of the NAJYRC,” Howard Simpson and wife Martha graciously hosted the event at Tempel Farm 14 times, more than any other venue in the championship’s 40-year history. The Championships were officially named the North American Young Riders Championships in 1988. The Championships were expanded to officially include a Junior Championship in 2006. The discipline of reining was added to the official schedule in 2008. In 2011 the discipline of endurance was also added.

FEI
Code of Conduct FOR THE WELFARE OF THE HORSE The Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI) expects all those involved in international equestrian sport to adhere to the FEI’s Code of Conduct and to acknowledge and accept that at all times the welfare of the horse must be paramount and must never be subordinated to competitive or commercial influences.
//1
At all stages during the preparation and training of competition horses, welfare must take precedence over all other demands. This includes good horse management, training methods, farriery and tack and transportation.
//2
Horses and athletes must be fit, competent and in good health before they are allowed to compete. This encompasses medication use, surgical procedures that threaten welfare or safety, pregnancy in mares and the misuse of aids.
//3
Events must not prejudice horse welfare. This involves paying careful attention to the competition areas, ground surfaces, weather conditions, stabling, site safety and fitness of the horse for onward travel after the event.
//4
Every effort must be made to ensure that horses receive proper attention after they have competed, and that they are treated humanely when their competition careers are over. This covers proper veterinary care, competition injuries, euthanasia and retirement.
//5
The FEI urges all involved with the sport to attain the highest levels of education in their areas of expertise.

just the slightest of aids, asks for a change of gait, pace or direction. To achieve perfection and the winning score in dressage, competitors must make complex and dramatic maneuvers look effortless. The dressage competition will be split into two championship divisions at the NAJYRC. Competitors ages 14-18 will be crowned champions both as Individuals and Teams in the Junior Championship by demonstrating their mastery of the Fourth Level movements. While riders 16-21 years of age will half-pass and pirouette their way through Prix St. Georges tests to capture the Young Rider Championship. Jumping Jumping is one the most exhilarating and testing disciplines that equestrian sport offers. In these competitions, horse and rider must demonstrate skill, speed and

obedience over a series of jumps that will knock down with the slightest rub.
Canada
Competitors will incur penalties for exceeding the time allowed and knocking

down or refusing an obstacle. The winner will be the horse and rider combination

that finishes with the lowest total faults. Therefore, jumping is one the few sports
USA
where a score of zero denotes perfection. Jumping is divided into separate divisions of Junior and Young Riders. Juniors will tests themselves against other 14-18 year old riders over a 1.40m track of intricate roll-backs, combinations, delicate verticals and scope-testing oxers. While the Young Riders division will not only boost the ages of competitors to 16-21, but also push the rails up to 1.50m.

Endurance Endurance riding varies in distance of 50 to 100 miles. This event tests both the rider’s horsemanship and their knowledge of their horse. The riders go out on

“loops” that range from 10 to 25 miles of cross-country terrain, often including

natural obstacles such as creeks, ditches and forests. At the end of every loop,
USA
horses must complete and pass a vet check. In order to continue, horses must reach a pulse criterion of between 60-68 beats per minute and pass an examination for hydration, gut sounds, lameness, metabolics and overall appearance. The horse and rider then get a rest period, between 30-60 minutes, and continue on their next loop. This is the fourth year that endurance will be included as a championship event at the NAJYRC, Junior and Young Riders will all compete in a CEI4*. The 75mile race will run on Friday and Best Conditioned Horse judging will take place on Saturday.

sion and obedience are rewarded through a set pattern of movements. In the cross-country phase, the same horse and rider pair gallop over miles of varying terrain, jumping an array of obstacles including banks, ditches, water and combinations. On the final day, competitors return to the ring for the jumping test where they must demonstrate their agility and technique by leaving the rails up. At NAJYRC, the eventing competition is split into Junior and Young Rider sections. In the Junior division, competitors ranging from 14-18 years old will compete at the International One-Star Level (CCI*). While the Young Riders, varying in age from 16-21, will contest an International Two-Star event (CCI2*).

Sure, he can put the smack-down on an unruly cow or shred a barrel pattern like nobody’s business. But underneath the tough exterior, the American Quarter Horse is a polished gentleman capable of delicate trail work, flowing reining maneuvers and everything in between. Think of him as silk meets sledgehammer.
