Beginning in December, the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) and USET Foundation will host six Elite Dressage Pre-Olympic Games training sessions/clinics. Riders will have the unique opportunity to work with both USEF Technical Advisor Anne Gribbons and U.S. Olympic, World Equestrian Games and Pan American Games medalist Steffen Peters. These clinics will focus on preparing potential team riders for the 2012 Olympic Games Selection Trials and Olympic Games. The clinics are by invitation only, based on criteria set forth by the USEF High Performance Dressage Committee and concentrating on athlete/horse combinations with international competition experience and the prospect of contributing to a Team or Individual medal at the 2012 Olympic Games. USET Foundation Hosts an Olympic Benefit Event “An English Country Evening” January 27, 2011 Honorary Chairs - Matt and Annette Lauer The United States Equestrian Team Foundation is pleased to announce that it will be hosting an Olympic Games benefit event on Friday, January 27, 2011 at the International Polo Club in Wellington, FL. “An English Country Evening” with honorary chairs NBC Today Show host Matt Lauer and his wife, Annette, an avid equestrian, will help raise funds for the USET Foundation to further support the United States Equestrian Team riders as they prepare

to compete at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, England. Dates, Location Named for USEF Show Jumping National Championship and Selection Trials for the 2012 Olympic Games The United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) has determined the date and location for the USEF Selection Trials for the U.S. Show Jumping Team for the 2012 Olympic Games. The competition will be hosted by Equestrian Sport Productions at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center in Wellington, FL, from March 21-24, 2012. This competition will also serve as the

2012 USEF Show Jumping National Championship. It will consist of four rounds over three days of jumping. “We were fortunate that we had very strong bids from both Equestrian Sport Productions and Tom Struzzieri at HITS from which to choose,” said John Long, USEF Chief Executive Officer. “We are looking forward to working with Mark Bellisimo, Michael Stone, and their entire

The United States Equestrian Federation extends its deepest condolences to all of the connections of the tremendous Canadian show jumping stallion Hickstead – who tragically collapsed and died on Sunday, November 6 while walking out of the ring after completing his round in Verona, Italy. Ridden and produced by Canada’s Eric Lamaze, Hickstead’s brilliance was easy to notice. His style was exciting and dynamic, and he won fans everywhere he went. Hickstead and Lamaze won major titles on four continents including Individual Gold and Team Silver at the 2008 Olympic Games, Individual Bronze and Team Silver at the 2007 Pan American Games and Individual Bronze at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. He won the $1 million CN International Grand Prix at the Spruce Meadows

Masters twice and countless grand prix in North America and Europe. At WEG his stock rose exponentially – show jumping fans became Hickstead fans, transcending their nationality – Hickstead jumped four impeccable rounds with four different riders in the Final Four. He was named the Best Horse of the competition. He rose to the occasion and the different styles of riding proving what a champion he was. “Hickstead was a wonderful horse, and he raised the game every time he went in the ring,” said USEF Chief Executive Officer John Long. “He will be greatly missed, and we join the legions of fans and friends of Hickstead who offer our sincerest sympathies to everyone whose life is affected by the loss of this brave horse.” Owned by the Fleischacker family

Three Medals for U.S. Endurance Team at the 2011 Pan American Endurance Championships The U.S. Endurance Team collected a historic number of medals at the 2011 Pan American Endurance Championships in Santo Domingo, Chile. Taking the Team Silver medal in a combined time of 19:05:19 was John Crandall III with Heraldic; Valerie Kanavy and Spectacular Gold; and Deborah Reich and Pandor. Meg Sleeper and Syrocco Cadence were eliminated at the mandatory recheck at vet gate three. The team finished just one minute and 47 seconds behind the Gold-medal team from Uruguay. The home team of Chile

took the Bronze. The veteran pair of Crandall and Heraldic completed the 120km course in 6:03:38 to win the Individual Silver medal. Finishing in 6:05:47, Kanavy and Spectacular Gold took the Individual Bronze. Riding for Uruguay, Bernardo Algorta won the Individual Gold in 5:59:27. Reich and Pandor finished in 6:55:54 to place 10th. Riding as an individual, Cheryl Van Deusen and Moro Amado finished in 15th place. The U.S. Team led by Chef d’Equipe Emmett Ross, set a blazing

pace in the first three loops and was the team to catch most of the day. With Sleeper’s elimination at vet gate, the three riders implemented a different strategy for the fourth and fifth loops. This is the most medals the U.S. has collected at an international endurance competition. “We are very happy with the two Silver medals and one Bronze,” said Ross. “Our riders had a fabulous go at it. We are proud of what we did and more importantly how we did it.” n USEF News

derful people not only helps the riders who compete in Nations’ Cups, Olympics, and World Championships; it also funds the Developing Dressage Rider Clinics that Debbie McDonald does for dressage and Young Rider International Show Jumping Tours. Both of these programs allow for the coaching and experience to help these up-and-coming horses and riders which are truly the future of our team. Without the generous support of individuals to support those programs, it would be very, very difficult,” she noted. Riders at the beginning of their careers also are grateful for the grants that enable them to move onto the international stage. Courtesy of a grant, Tina Konyot got mileage with Calecto V that helped the U.S. dressage team take fourth place at the WEG and secure a spot in the 2012 Olympics. She was thrilled earlier that year to be able to go to Aachen and hone her skills after receiving the $30,000 grant. “It’s my horse, I don’t have any funding, I don’t have anything whatsoever behind me,” she said. “Without that, it would not have been possible for me to go to Europe last year. I’m so grateful they back riders who need the funding.” Show jumper Margie Engle has always worked hard to make it in the equestrian world, starting by mucking stalls and doing other chores that enabled her to get the lessons and riding time her middle-class family couldn’t fit into its budget. Her first trip to Europe as a member of the U.S. team was made possible by a USET grant in 1997. “It’s great to show as a team; it’s a great honor to be able to represent the country,” she said, but noted, “We

couldn’t afford to do it on our own. It’s very generous for everyone to help out. It’s kind of hard leaving your business and paying expenses to go over there.”

It was a major achievement for eventer Sinead Halpin when she was named to the high performance “A” training list in June, after finishing third at the Rolex Kentucky ThreeDay Event presented by Bridgestone as the top-placing American. But like so many riders with more talent than resources, Sinead had to figure out how to get herself to her next target, the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials in September. The New Jersey resident is preparing herself and her horse, Manoir de Carneville, for a shot at the 2012 Olympic team. Toward that end, she staged a fundraiser at the U.S. Equestrian Team Foundation’s historic Gladstone, NJ, headquarters. While it was well-attended, more was needed for her expensive trip abroad. So when Halpin heard she had been awarded the USET Foundation’s Jacqueline Mars Training Grant, it opened doors and made it possible for her to pursue her objective without worrying about how she would pay for it. “Unbelievable,” was the way she described what getting the grant meant to her. “It relieves some of that stress, so I can focus on what I need to be focusing on,” said Halpin. “I don’t have to be focusing on how to make ends meet. It’s huge in terms of competition.” The grant enabled her to compete at the Hartpury event in England several weeks before Burghley, so she and her mount could rest up from the trip abroad and become adjusted to their new location. The Foundation’s executive director, Bonnie Jenkins, noted, “The funding the Foundation provides through generous donations from won-

At the Dansko Fair Hill International, two national eventing championships were contested – the CCI*** and CCI ** from October 13-16. Kyle Lyman (West Hartford, VT) held her nerve to jump a clear round with Jeff and Joan Nichols’ Trading Aces to earn her first USEF National Eventing Championship and CCI2* on a three-day score of 48.7. Boyd Martin, the leader following the dressage phase, jumped a clear round on Ying Yang Yo to clinch his second USEF National CCI3* Eventing Championship. Congratulations to the 2011 Youth of the Year Winners – Results of the AMHA Youth of the Year Contest were announced at a ceremony at the Grand National & World Championship Morgan Horse Show on the evening of Saturday, October 15. AMHA is pleased to announce Kate Foy of Kingston, NH, as the 2011 AMHA Youth of the Year winner. She is the recipient of a $2,500 custom-designed awards package, sponsored by the Cynthia Elaine Epperson Trust Fund. Foy qualified for the national contest by winning the contest at the Maine Morgan Horse Show. She is a senior at the University of Louisville and past president of the AMHA Youth Council. Taking Reserve Youth of the Year honors is Irina Shavlik of White Bear Lake, MN. Shavlik was the winner of the North Star Americana Youth of the Year Contest. She is a senior at White Bear Lake Area High School and plans to attend college and join the Peace Corps. Longtime Horse Show Director June Camper Passes Away – Longtime Director of the Roanoke Valley Horse Show and former American Saddlebred Horse Association (ASHA) member June Camper, passed away on Thursday, October 6, at the age of 70. Camper brought the skills and qualities of being a businessperson, fundraiser, and diplomat to her post as Executive Director of the Roanoke Valley Horse Show, and helped grow the non-profit equestrian event into an annual multi-breed show that has contributed significantly to the regional economy and to an array of charities.

Wimpys Little Step is the Youngest NRHA Three Million Dollar Sire – Just last May, Wimpys Little Step proved his prowess as a reining horse sire by becoming the youngest Two Million Dollar Sire in National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) history – by a margin of five years. As of October 2011, he is now officially the youngest sire to cross the three million dollar plateau with a total of $3,011,636 earned by his progeny – again by a margin of five years. Wimpys Little Step joins NRHA legends Hollywood Dun It, Topsail Whiz, Smart Chic Olena, Shining Spark, and Gallo Del Cielo in the three million dollar sire category. He is owned by Xtra Quarter Horses, LLC, in Purcell, OK, where he currently stands. USHJA’s Championship Hunter Rider Program Establishes Prestigious Peter Wetherill Cup – The United States Hunter Jumper Association (USHJA) and the USHJA Foundation will honor the life and legacy of equestrian Peter Wetherill through the formation of the Peter Wetherill Cup. A first-of-its-kind, the esteemed Peter Wetherill Cup will be presented annually to the owner of the World Championship Hunter Rider Program (WCHR) Hunter of the Year, a horse that is currently showing and exemplifies the ideal hunter. A highly-accomplished horseman, Wetherill is known for his many victories aboard horses such as Junior League, Desert Storm, and Hudson. Medal Sweep for Team USA Dressage The U.S. Dressage Team owned the Guadalajara Country Club’s beautiful dressage arena at the 2011 Pan American Games. The team of Cesar Parra on Grandioso, Heather Blitz on Paragon, Marisa Festerling on Big Tyme and Steffen Peters on Weltino’s Magic stormed to Gold to open the Games for the USEF, winning convincingly over Canada and Colombia. The top three riders (from the top 25) from the U.S. then returned to the ring to vie for Individual honors in the freestyle. The U.S. added Individual Gold, Silver, and Bronze to Team Gold, and they all three scored better than 80 percent in the freestyle. Peters (San Diego, CA) wasn’t sure it would be possible to top Blitz (Wellington, FL) and Paragon’s mark of 86.650%, but he rode with a fierce determination and got every point out of Weltino’s Magic. They scored 87.300% for their freestyle for a combined average of 82.690%. The Hlavacek’s nine-year-old Westphalian gelding gave Peters his second Gold medal of these Games. “What an amazing day and an amazing competition,” said Peters. “It is a very exciting day, congratulations to my teammates. The big score that Heather pulled in—I don’t think I’ve ever had that much pressure going into the arena knowing that there was an 86 percent in front of me.” A steely veteran, Peters faced the pressure and delivered—adding a second Pan Am Gold to a résumé that includes Olympic Bronze, a World Cup Dressage title and two Individual Bronze medals at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. Blitz and Paragon wowed the crowd, and at just eight years old, Paragon is an exciting horse for the future. Their two-day average was 81.917%. “I hit all the parts of the music, that’s always a great feeling,” said Blitz. “He felt so smooth and expressive…I can believe it because I know he can do it, but I still can’t believe it.” Festerling (Moorpark, CA) wasn’t going to leave these Games without another medal, and she had the ride of her life on Big Tyme to secure Bronze with a freestyle score of 80.775% and an overall average of 77.545%. She managed Big Tyme’s enthusiasm impeccably, and like Blitz and Paragon, both horse and rider made two trips to the podium at their very first Games. “It was awesome, the atmosphere was very, very electric,” said Festerling. “I was thrilled…in this kind of competition you couldn’t ask for more.” Festerling rode with accuracy and poise on the biggest stage of her career. The U.S. triple marked the first time the Individual medals have been swept by one nation in dressage at the Pan American Games. Parra had been a dutiful lead-off rider for the U.S. team; putting in a confident lead-off test on Michael and Sarah Davis’ Grandioso to set the stage for the Team Gold. usef.org

He was sixth after the first round of the Individual Final and under the rules only the top three from any one country were able to go forward to the freestyle. In another unprecedented effort, the U.S. Eventing Team stormed to Team Gold the following week. All five team members added nothing to their dressage scores, to finish on 138.6—a feat never before achieved in a Team Eventing Championship. After winning the dressage, they jumped five spectacular clear rounds on Saturday’s cross-country course, and then sealed the victory with double-clear show jumping. “I would like to give a really special congratulations to my team,” said Chef d’Equipe Mark Phillips. “Five people finishing on their dressage score—that’s never been done before in the history of our sport.” Anchored by Buck Davidson (Ocala, FL), who, on Absolute Liberty, was the pathfinder for the U.S. Team, he set a standard that the entire team maintained. “We have really good horses, we were well-coached, we have a great staff and we came here with that mission— to put in personal bests,” said Davidson. “And big thanks to Mexico. It’s been a great trip.” Canada won Team Silver on a score of 172.6, and Brazil was third with a score of 209.8. At the conclusion of the Team competition, they were all still chasing Canada’s Jessica Phoenix individually. Michael Pollard (Dalton, GA) and Nathalie Pollard’s Schoensgreen Hanni were second, Hannah Burnett (The Plains, VA) and Jacqueline Mars’ Harbour Pilot were third and Davidson and Sharon Will’s Absolute Liberty were fourth. Five points separated the top four horses. Under the Pan Am rules only three members of any one team can contest an Individual Final, so two team members were not able to jump for Individual medals. Shannon Lilley (Gilroy, CA) and The Lilley Group’s Ballingowan Pizazz and Lynn Symansky (Middleburg, VA) and her own Donner were placed fifth and sixth respectively after the Team competition. Immaculate jumping was the order of the day for the individual medals and the top three horses were beautifully ridden over three days. Phoenix held onto her dressage lead, adding nothing to her winning score of 43.9 with Pavarotti. Burnett and Harbour Pilot jumped up to Silver and Davidson on Absolute Liberty won Bronze. Burnett rode with determination far beyond her 25 years on Jacqueline Mars’ eight-year-old Irish Sport Horse gelding Harbour Pilot. Pollard jumped a terrific clear on Schoensgreen Hanni in the Team round, but had two rails in the Individual round and dropped to fourth place. “I’m just really honored to be on this horse and this team,” said Burnett. “I’m also really happy for Jess (Phoenix). The Team competition definitely had a bit more pressure; you want to make your team proud and your country proud.” Davidson led the team as the most experienced rider of the five—and he was rewarded for his efforts with his first Individual medal. More than just medals were at stake for the American Show Jumping Team, they were seeking qualification for the 2012 London Olympic Games. But they faced the pressure and delivered the United States its third equestrian Team Gold medal of these Games, jumping eight clear rounds in the Nations Cup. Their score of 2.90 from the speed class didn’t change, and they led Brazil (11.58) and Mexico (13.24) in the medal ceremony. “It’s the way they rode, it’s not the result,” said Chef d’Equipe George Morris. “I’m an ideological horseman. I’m not interested in it unless it’s beautifully ridden.” By the time Individual leader Beezie Madden (Cazenovia, NY) went in the ring as the last to jump for the American squad, she was jumping for herself—the U.S. Team already had clinched the Gold, thanks to her teammates’ three double clears. But Madden jumped clear and defended her lead from the speed class. Coral Reef Via Volo jumped easily around Javier Fernandez’s course. Madden, continued to lead the individual standings on a score of zero. Right behind her is teammate Christine McCrea (East Windsor, CT) on a score of 0.88 with Romantovich Take One. The 11-year-old KWPN gelding bounded around the track twice, making it look simple. This was McCrea’s first team appearance at a championship. “I’m just really, really proud of us as a team,” said McCrea. Though McLain Ward (Brewster, NY) owns two Olympic Gold medals, he felt the pressure of the occasion as he entered the ring on Grant Road Partners’ 11-year-old Wurttemberger gelding, Antares F. “I have to be honest, it was a lot of stress, this Olympic qualification,” said Ward. “I felt a little more pressure today and yesterday than I have in past Olympic Games. But it was obviously a fantastic event, and I think this is a great team.” Ward jumped a textbook round twice, improving on his performance and moving into third place on a three-round score of 2.02. Rounding out the U.S. effort was Kent Farrington (Chicago, IL). He rode impeccably on RCG Farm’s Uceko, and, as third to jump, jumped the round that clinched the Gold. They were eighth in the Individual standings. “This is an A-plus. The courses were fantastic, the technical coordination was fantastic, the footing was very good,” said Morris. “The horses jumped great, it’s a beautiful club—A-plus across the board.” The U.S. squad is supported by a team that includes veterinarian Dr. Tim Ober, farrier Todd Meister, physio Janus Marquis and reserve rider Mario Deslauriers—who was an integral part of the effort. The top three horses from each country (of those in the top 25 overall) moved forward to jump in the Individual Final. It came down to 7/100ths of a second and when Madden landed over the last fence in the second round of the final it seemed Individual Gold was secure. But she finished on a time of 66.07 with Coral Reef Via Volo, and the time allowed was 66 seconds. One time fault left her in the Silver-medal position behind McCrea and Romantovich Take One. There wasn’t a rail separating the top five horses going into the final round—and at the end of all the jumping, McCrea and Romantovich Take One finished up the way they started. They jumped five clear rounds and ended their first Pan American Games with Team and Individual Gold on a score of 0.88. usef.org

“This was a fabulous week,” said McCrea. “It was great. Our country needed this…we needed it.” Madden is the master of precise riding and clutch performances so her time fault surprised everyone in attendance. Madden and Coral Reef Via Volo put on a jumping clinic throughout the week, but fell victim to the clock in the final moments. “It cost me a lot,” said Madden of her time fault. “But, thank God I have a strong team here, and Chris was here to take it up. I am happy it was an American, we were still Gold and Silver, and with the Team Gold it was a fantastic week for us so no complaints.” Bernardo Alves moved up to third for Brazil on Bridgit, after Ward had one rail down to finish fourth in an impressive five-round effort. So Many Medals The U.S. brought home a total of 10 medals. It marked the first time since 1975 in Mexico City, that all three U.S. teams won Gold at a Pan American Games. Sensitivity to Laminitis Q: I am entered in a combined driving event with my athletic, good-moving 16-year-old American Saddlebred. He had an episode of laminitis a year ago that was presumably caused by vaccines but possibly brought about by rich hay. I want him to have more energy but not be out of control. He currently gets six to eight pounds (2.73.6 kg) of senior feed, timothy/alfalfa hay, and about eight hours of grazing on good-quality grass. What can I do?

A: From your description, it seems as though your horse has bounced back quite well from his bout with laminitis. Though he has recovered fully, he might be more sensitive to future laminitic episodes. Laminitis can be acute (a one-time occurrence caused by something specific like retained placenta, fever, etc.) or chronic (constantly or seasonally in danger of recurrence). Chronic laminitis has been associated with equine metabolic syndrome and Cushing’s disease. Insulin resistance is a common factor in chronic laminitis and can be diagnosed with specialized blood tests. Two ways to combat insulin resistance are to keep the horse at a healthy weight and to exercise him almost daily. From your description, it seems your horse suffered an acute case of laminitis rather than chronic. However, I understand your caution in trying to avoid it from happening again by keeping him on a feeding program that will not provoke insulin resistance. The amount of exercise he is getting in training for the event should help tremendously with this, as well. Your gelding is getting a low-energy diet for the amount of work he is doing. Senior feeds are designed to supply a portion of forage to the horse, which is what makes them fairly safe for horses with potential metabolic problems. However, they often don’t supply enough calories for the hard-working horse. 32

If you are concerned with the horse having more energy for work and staying power during the endurance phase, he may need a higher energy feed with more starch or fat. One of the simplest and safest additions to the diet would be oil (preferably ¼ to 1 cup of canola or soybean) to increase the caloric density without increasing starch. This may give the horse a little more endurance but may not help with building muscle glycogen stores needed for energy generation. Starch is the key to building muscle glycogen. Strategies to consider that take the need for starch and fat into consideration would be to exchange a portion of the senior feed with a higher energy feed (look for something with at least 8% fat and substitute two to three pounds of the senior), or add a supplement like rice bran (20% fat; ½ to one pound per day). I don’t think it would be necessary to completely replace the senior feed, and I feel like it would be adequate to swap out some of the senior for a higher energy feed. All of the suggested strategies should be safe for a horse with a questionable history of laminitis, as long as he is in training and competition.
