FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Pony Finals Competitors and Parents: Welcome to the 53rd annual USEF Pony Finals presented by Collecting Gaits Farm! We’re thrilled to have young equestrians from across the country back to compete at the one-of-a-kind Kentucky Horse Park. USEF Pony Finals is a highlight of the show season for many riders, and whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned competitor, we know you’ll have a great time here in Lexington. Over the years, USEF Pony Finals presented by Collecting Gaits Farm has been a starting point for remarkable equestrian careers. Many athletes who have gone on to represent the U.S. in international equestrian competition were once Pony Finals competitors, including Olympian Greg Best, FEI World Equestrian Games team member Adrienne Sternlicht, Pan American Games medalist Lucy Deslauriers, and numerous others, past and present, who have reached the top levels of the sport. But just as important as the accolades that may follow are the treasured experiences that our Pony Finals competitors have with their fellow competitors—human and equine—while attending this horse show. The love of horses and ponies is celebrated here, and we’re thrilled to be part of so many treasured memories. Of course, 2020’s USEF Pony Finals will look a bit different from what we’re used to due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We’re incredibly thankful for the tireless efforts of show management to ensure that this year’s event could be held as safely as possible and within the guidelines of national, state, and USEF rules. Please do your part to make this year’s USEF Pony Finals a successful show that we can look back on with pride: wear your face covering, abide by social distancing rules, and be kind and courteous to show staff and volunteers as they work to keep you and your family safe. And while we may not have the same in-person group activities that are typically part of the USEF Pony Finals experience, we encourage participants to keep the camaraderie and fun atmosphere of this event alive by sharing your successes and experiences on social media with the hashtag #PonyFinals. OF PONY FINALS

In 1959,

the British National Pony

The prestigious Van Sinderen Trophy for International Pony Competition

Society challenged American Pony riders under age 17 to an International Pony Hunter Competition. First held at the prestigious National Horse Show in New York City, the best U.S. ponies and riders met head-to-head with the best British ponies and riders in the small and large divisions. The first competition emphasized conformation and under saddle performance. Jumping ability was tested over two fences and counted for 20 percent of the final score. The American riders in this inaugural competition were narrowly defeated 10-9. Two years later, the British National Pony Society hosted the competition. The American competitors prepared by spending a rigorous two weeks at the famed U.S. Equestrian Center in Gladstone, NJ. The training proved beneficial, as the U.S. returned with the trophy by a score of 13-9.

Celebrating 53 YEARS

In 1967 the United States Equestrian Federation (formally AHSA) created what was then called the AHSA Hunter Pony Competition as a national event, open to all members of the USEF who met the qualifying criteria. Mrs. Cushny, Chairman of the Hunter Pony Committee at the time said, "The basic purpose of the pony competition from the outset has been to develop a quality pony that could perform over fences as well as under saddle." This newly created national competition, placing more focus on the over fences performance, and developed to replace

the International Pony Competition has now grown into one of the largest events for ponies throughout the US. Back then, each state could only host one qualifying event, where only a pony placing first or second overall in an “A” rated section would qualify for the finals. Ponies were to be split into 2 sections – 13 hands and under, competing over fences set at 2’6”, and ponies over 13 hands, competing over fences set at 3’. Today, multiple qualifying classes are held in each state across the country. Although a pony must still acquire one of the two highest scores of

the section by winning a championship or reserve championship in an “AA” or “A” rated Regular or Green Hunter Pony section, many other aspects of the qualification specifications as well as the overall Pony Finals championship event have evolved over the years. Since 1984, the finals have included the popular Pony Medal Championships, an equitation competition. Riders qualify for the equitation finals by winning a blue ribbon or by accumulating 30 points in an USEF Pony Medal qualifying class. The 2001 USEF Pony Finals marked the addition of

the National Pony Jumper Championships. Ponies and riders qualify based on annually produced Selection Procedures. 2005 marked the start of what was to be a long history of Pony Finals calling Kentucky “home”, when the event moved to the famed Kentucky Horse Park. The Championships have seen abundant growth since its inception, and today are considered by many to be the most prestigious and celebrated events of their kind in the United States. The 2020 year marks the 53rd anniversary of the inception of Pony Finals as the National Championship. This six-day, three discipline, championship event hosts more than 500 young riders with talented pony mounts, while hundreds of spectators and families cheer them on. The Hunter Pony Championship’s threephase competition lasts five days, covers both the Green and Regular Pony sections, and judges the pony’s conformation, way of moving under saddle and fence jumping ability. While the Pony Medal Championship is a rigorous one day event that test young riders in a head-to-head competition judging their ability to navigate and maintain proper equitation through a technical and

demanding course of fences. Although the Pony Jumper Championships do not hold as long of a history at Pony Finals, they provide a vital opportunity for young riders to compete during a multi-day event on both team and individual levels. Experience gained here at Pony Finals just might one day become a building

block for a future US Equestrian Team Olympic rider. Former Pony Finals competitors who have gone on to represent the US Team in International and Olympic events include Georgina Bloomberg, Greg Best, Reed Kessler, Alison Firestone Robitaille, Jessica Springsteen, and Molly Ashe Cawley.
