WHAT IS DRESSAGE? The word “dressage” comes from the French word dresser, meaning “to train.” It’s an Olympic equestrian sport, yet a basic training discipline for the backyard horse. Dressage teaches a horse to be obedient, willing, supple, and responsive. The horse freely submits to the rider’s lightest “aids” or body signals, while remaining balanced and energetic. The graceful movements performed in competition may look effortless, but are the result of years of training. The aids should be virtually imperceptible. A squeeze of the calf, a closing of the fingers, and a shifting of the athlete’s weight in the saddle should be all that is necessary to tell the horse what is required. Dressage requires the horse and athlete to combine the strength and agility of gymnastics with the elegance and beauty of ballet.

JUDGING THE TESTS The tests for each level are written so that there is a way to consistently measure performance. The judges are looking for accuracy of the transitions (changes of gait), obedience, suppleness of the horse, quality of the gaits, and the rider’s use of aids.

All movements are numbered on the judge’s sheet.

They are marked from zero to 10, zero being the lowest mark and 10 being the highest. A flawless performance of each movement is seldom achieved.

Following the test, the athlete’s individual movement scores are added up and a final score is calculated as a percentage of the possible score that the athlete could achieve for that particular test. The highest percentage wins the class.

THE MOVEMENTS Horses and athletes are judged on how well they perform certain movements in tests that match each horse’s level of training.

These are: Extensions: The horse will lengthen his stride for the rider on command. This movement is most exciting at the trot. When done correctly, the horse seems to float across the arena Lateral movements: The horse will show its suppleness by going forward first and either moving sideways or moving parts of its body sideways.

Flying Changes: The horses will appear to “skip” across the arena at a canter switching the leading front and hind hooves.

Pirouettes: In this dramatic upper level movement, the horse will turn in place at a canter.

Piaffe: This is a highly cadenced trot-in-place. The horse will spring lightly from one diagonal pair of legs to the other with an even rhythm and a definable moment of suspension. It is the highest degree of competitive collection demanded of the horse.

Passage: The horse appears to float, springing from one diagonal to the other while maintaining its body in a perfectly straight line. In effect this movement is a collected trot in slow motion.

FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Competitors and Supporters, On behalf of the US Equestrian Federation, welcome to all new and returning competitors to the beautiful show grounds of Lamplight Equestrian Center featuring a week of top competition! This week, the U.S. Dressage Festival of Champions encompasses 14 championships including the Markel/USEF Young & Developing Horse Dressage National Championships, the Horseware Ireland/USEF Young Rider Dressage National Championship, the Adequan/USEF Young Adult ‘Brentina Cup’ Dressage National Championship, and the Adequan/USEF Junior Dressage National Championship.

The U.S. Dressage Festival of Champions has a long history and has grown each year into the incredible event we enjoy today. The Festival hosts a truly special gathering of athletes, parents, owners, trainers and support groups. While qualifying alone is a great accomplishment, competing at the Festival is an especially rewarding experience. The camaraderie amongst the competitors fosters many lasting friendships and the joy of equestrian sport.

I want to extend my appreciation to Markel, Adequan, and Horseware Ireland. It is with their valuable contributions that we are able to host these Championships and prepare athletes and horses for world class performance in the future. These Championships continue to achieve their mission of identifying and recognizing outstanding talent and in the development of international caliber horses and athletes. Former competitors who have gone on to represent the U.S. Team in International and Olympic events include Steffen Peters, Laura Graves, Adrienne Lyle, Shelly Francis and Kasey Perry-Glass.

A special thank you to Lamplight Equestrian Center and HITS, Inc. who graciously open their doors to us. I also want to extend accolades to Manager Monica Fitzgerald and her staff and volunteers for their commitment to the success of these Championships.

We of course thank the many Dressage enthusiasts for coming out to watch and cheer on these exceptional athletes and horses competing during this exciting week!

YOUNG HORSE DRESSAGE CHAMPIONSHIPS FOUR-YEAR-OLD DIVISION

Day One: All entries in the Four-Year-Old Division will compete in the USEF Dressage Test for Four-Year-Old Horses.

This test will count towards 40% of the overall average.

Day Two: All entries in the Four-Year-Old Division will compete in the USEF Dressage Test for Four-Year-Old Horses on their second and final day of competition. This test will count toward 60% of the overall average.

FIVE-AND SIX-YEAR-OLD DIVISIONS

Day One: All entries in the Five and Six-Year-Old Divisions will compete in their respective Preliminary Test on their first day of competition. This test will count towards 40% of the overall average.

Day Two: All entries in the Five and Six-Year Old Divisions will compete in their respective Final Test on their second and final day of competition. This test will count toward 60% of the overall average.

DEVELOPING HORSE DRESSAGE CHAMPIONSHIPS PRIX ST. GEORGES

Day One: All entries in the Prix St. Georges Division will compete in the FEI Prix St. Georges Test. This test will count towards 40% of the overall average.

Day Two: All entries in the Prix St. Georges Division will compete in the USEF DevelopingHorse Prix St. Georges Test on their second and final day of competition. This test will count toward 60% of the overall average.

GRAND PRIX

Day One: All entries in the Grand Prix Division will compete in the FEI Intermediate II Test. This test will count towards 40% of the overall average.

Day Two: All entries in the Grand Prix Division will compete in the USEF Developing Grand Prix Test on their second and final day of competition. This test will count toward 60% of the overall average.

ORDER OF GO

Day One: Starting Order will be determined by open draw for each age division.

Day Two: Starting order for each age division will be determined by draw in three (3) groups of five (5)Horses, based upon the scores from Day 1; the highest-placing group will draw for the third set of class ride times.

IN THE CASE OF A TIE:

In the case of a tie for National Champion or Reserve National Champion in any Young or Developing Horse division, the United States bredHorse shall prevail (U.S. bred is defined as a horse who is foaled in the U.S.). If two or more U.S. bred horses are tied for the same placing or two or more non-U.S. bred horses are tied for the same placing, breaking of ties will be at the judging panel’s discretion.

SPECIAL AWARDS U.S. BRED HORSE AWARD

This award is granted to the highest placed U.S. Bred Horse in each age division of the Young and Developing Horse Championships. Verification is by the submission of a horse’s registration papers with the Application of Intent and entry to the Championships.

SELTEN HW CHALLENGE TROPHY

Established by Elizabeth Ball and Lisa Seger in 2014, the Selten HW Challenge Trophy is presented to the owner of the young horse who completes three successive age titles.

Winning the six-year-old division at the 2010 Markel/USEF Young Horse Dressage National Championships, marked the third championship for Selten HW (Sandro Hit x High Princess/Hohenstein), a U.S. bred horse by Roger & Irene Hoeflich-Wiederhold.

EQUIFIT BEST PRESENTED PAIR AWARD

The Best Presented Pair Award celebrates one athlete/horse combination and recognizes their “style” during the competition. The award recognizes presentation of athlete/horse appearance, horsemanship, and attention to detail. The winning athlete will receive a gift certificate and sponsored by EquiFit. The Best Presented Pair Award will be determined by the President of the Ground Jury.

USEF DRESSAGE CHAMPIONSHIPS THE PATSY ALBERS AWARD FUND

Established in 2014 by the Dressage Foundation, the Patsy Albers Award Fund is presented to the highest placing rider in the Grand Prix division who represented the U.S. at the North American Junior/Young Rider Championships (if there is not a qualified rider in the Grand Prix, the award will be presented to the highest placing qualified rider in the Intermediaire I division). The award will provide financial support for continuing education and training. Patsy Albers was a well-known and much loved figure at dressage shows across the country; her passing saddened many in equestrian sports. Patsy was a long-time supporter of the North American Junior/Young Rider Championships Region 1 team. Her expertise extended into management, officiating and volunteering.

SPECTATOR POINTERS

Riding a dressage test requires a great deal of concentration on the part of the horse and rider. To ensure the riders and horses achieve their best performance, please remember to: • Applaud only after the rider has completed the final salute.

• Speak in a normal tone but do not shout or wave.

• Avoid running, shouting, or sudden movements while a horse is in the ring.

It is our hope that you enjoy these Championships and this information provides you with some understanding of the dedication and the intensive work of these athletes in providing these performances.

USEF GOLD MEDAL OF DISTINCTION

The USEF Gold Medal of Distinction recognizes those who have represented the United States in top level dressage competition around the world, including those that have won medals at Olympic and World Equestrian Games.

THE ANITA OWEN PERPETUAL SILVER STIRRUP TROPHY

This trophy will be presented to the Junior or Young Rider who best displays sportsmanship throughout the event. Junior and Young Riders will submit nominations of their peers with the recipient being selected from those nominations by the Chief Steward, Competition Manager, and the President of the Ground Jury. The trophy will be presented in the final Junior and Young Rider awards ceremony.

THE USET FOUNDATION RIDERS’CUP/TERRY KOENIG MEMORIAL TROPHY This trophy is presented to the USEF Young Rider Dressage National Champion for their overall scores from the FEI Young Rider Team and Individual Tests.

GRAYSON JOCKEY CLUB RESEARCH FOUNDATION BEST TURNED OUT HORSE AWARD

Grayson Jockey Club Research Foundation will be awarding the Best Turned Out Horse Award to two horses from the horse inspections (“Jog”). Awarded through the evaluation by the Ground Jury, the appearance of horse will be considered including grooming, tack, behavior, athlete attire, and interaction with the judges. Each winner will receive a Julep Cup from the Grayson Jockey Club Research Foundation.
