s we approach the holiday season, the United States Equestrian Federation (USEF) is ready to wrap up a successful 2016 and move on to an exciting 2017. With the achievements of our 2016 U.S. Olympic Equestrian Teams, Equestrian Magazine looks at U.S. Olympic champions of the past. All 2016 USEF National Championships have been completed and titles have been won. Check out what was Seen and Heard around the Championships. Inexpensive Recycled Gift Wrap for the Horse Lover In keeping with our green theme, your local newspaper has what are called “end rolls.” They're left over after the day's paper is printed. The printer will be happy to give them to you for free. This is what you can use to wrap gifts. Additionally, I keep all the cool Christmas cards I get from friends from the year before and cut off the tops of the cards. I mount this to the top of the package with double-sided tape. Add some cedar or evergreen sprigs, and possibly some pinecones, to this arrangement, and some pretty plaid ribbon, and you are done! I am blessed to live on a beautiful property in the Northwest and have the luxury of going out my door to find a plethora of greens from which to pick. For those of you who do not have that opportunity, this is a great time to stop the holiday craziness. Take a walk, see what is growing locally in your area, and take a breath of fresh air to gain perspective on the holidays. We visited Michaels craft store and found a die cut of a horse. We chose some inexpensive sheets of holiday paper for some fun additions to your packages.

t’s officially holiday time. Turkey and all the extras have been enjoyed, and I am sure most of you, if you are like me, are running around a little stressed. Forget making your way to your local shopping mall this holiday season for your gift wrapping; just take a second look at some of the things in your tack box and trunk! Baling twine? One spur? Old stirrup leather? Let’s not forget that large assortment of bits! Here is a helping hand with some creative ideas to inexpensively wrap your gifts. We have also included some good ways to use some of the endless tack you keep accumulating for holiday décor.
Equestrian Cheese Serving Tray This is a simple solution for displaying cheese and crackers. We used an antique mirror and hot glued a bit on the bottom, adding some cedar boughs and berries for color. The mirror creates a reflection and is especially nice if some holiday lights are nearby. Garland Using Spurs, Stirrup Irons, and Bits Secure your garland to a staircase with wire. Then, drape some pretty wired holiday ribbon laced throughout the garland. We actually attached the spur, bit, and stirrup iron with a branch of the garland. Pick these three items and repeat, going up the stairs. Stirrup Iron with Leather Wreath This wreath can easily be made with an old stirrup leather, stirrup iron, artificial wreath, and some holiday ribbon. Take an old leather and cut it down; use one of the existing holes to secure the wreath with a large-headed nail into the wall. It looks especially cheerful hung on each side of a set of barn doors. In keeping with our green theme, we took the same leftover items, added some large draft horse shoes that we spray painted bright gold, and tied them onto a large wreath. Let’s face it, you most likely will feel some stress this holiday season, but it will not be because your packages lack personality (or because your tack box is a tangled mess of extra stirrups and bits). Ushering in a Revitalized USEF Those attending the United States Equestrian Federation’s (USEF) Annual Meeting will notice a bit of change in the atmosphere. Taking place January 11-14, 2017, at the Hyatt Regency and adjoining Lexington Center in Lexington, Ky., this year’s Annual Meeting adds an extra layer of excitement. Newly elected USEF President Murray Kessler will outline a compelling strategic vision on Wednesday, January 11, during the General Session. The new direction aims to build upon former President Chrystine Tauber’s valuable work in propelling U.S. equestrian sport to unprecedented levels by bringing the joy of horse sports to as many people as possible. Kessler will explain how this plan will increase USEF membership, build a larger equestrian fan base, and continue to provide access to and increase participation in equestrian sports at all levels by ensuring fairness, safety, and enjoyment. “Just like almost everything else at the USEF right now, the Annual Meeting will be going through many changes over the next few years, starting with this year’s meeting 20 Equestrian Winter 2016

in Lexington. In the past, the USEF Annual Meeting was almost exclusively for committee meetings and awards. This year we will be adding an important change,” said Kessler. “We will use this forum to share the strategies and plans we have to grow equestrian sport in the U.S. I will be sharing the new strategic plan in a two-hour General Session on Wednesday. On Friday, the USEF Management team will surprise you with the massive implementation plans, many of which will be launched during the meeting. If you love horse sports, you will want to attend this landmark conference.” As part of this dynamic shift in focus, USEF will captivate attendees throughout the week of Annual Meeting with imagery and activities showcasing the new vision. Hands-on booths will be positioned around the rotunda, giving attendees an opportunity to interact with USEF staff on several topics beneficial to USEF members. Visitors can learn useful tips to navigate the revamped website and explore its new “Learning Center” portal. A GUIDE TO WINTER CIRCUIT ACTIVITIES “Monday is the New Saturday� Last jump cleared, last lesson taught, last office bill paid, last horse put away: show is over. Trainers, grooms, riders, and parents have made it through another horse show week. A collective sigh of relief courses through the four major winter equestrian circuits in Ocala, Fla., Wellington, Fla., Aiken, S.C., and Thermal, Calif. We are all here to train and compete, but there is life off of the horse show grounds. Having escaped the hardships of winter weather, we are compelled to grasp all of the advantages - indoor and outdoor - that these destinations have to offer. Off the grounds and into town!

Wellington, Fla., has held a winter equestrian circuit for over four decades. It is the largest and longest-running equestrian competition in the world. Beginning in a small polo grounds not far from the current site, WEF, as it is known, is now one of the preeminent facilities for world-class dressage, hunter, and show jumping competition. Wellington offers many options for entertainment both on the show grounds and off. Friday nights are reserved for the “Friday Night Lights” dressage competitions at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival. Each Friday night, top international dressage riders compete head-to-head under the lights of the stadium. Delicious food and varied clothing and souvenir shops offer a great start to the weekend.

The next night you can drive across the street to the International Arena to enjoy show jumping at its finest. “Saturday Night Lights” features Grand Prix competitors from over two dozen countries in an electric atmosphere of bright lights, big crowds, and great competition. The venue includes a merry-goround and face painting for kids, many different food and libation options, and live music. It is truly an evening that offers something for horse enthusiasts and casual fans alike. The International Polo Club (IPC) is a few miles from the WEF grounds and is the premier polo destination in the world. IPC hosts the most prestigious polo tournaments in the United States. public, the venue offers a wide range of hospitality and is a great place to spend Sunday afternoons. Mingle with the elite as you watch the fast and furious sport of polo. While the Winter Equestrian Festival complex is a world unto itself, there is a rich menu of options for recreation outside of its walls. Wellington is twelve miles from the ocean, providing easy access to beautiful beaches. If you have had enough of the sun at the horse shows, West Palm Beach and Palm Beach are shopping meccas. West Palm Beach hosts the famed City Place complex with a plethora of shopping, restaurants, and entertainment. Palm Beach offers high-end retail therapy

To feed the cultural side, the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach houses an impressive permanent collection including Americans Georgia O’Keeffe and Jackson Pollack and European masters Monet, Gauguin, and Picasso. The Kravis Center contains a 2,000-seat concert hall, a playhouse, and an outdoor amphitheatre and offers an interesting mix of entertainment options. For those yearning for a different sports experience, the nearby BB&T Center is home to the Florida Panthers, a professional hockey team. The Everglades are a short drive away and offer fan boat tours and fishing expeditions.

“Monday, Monday.” Heading north and west, we find another winter equestrian destination in Ocala, Fla. Located in limestone-rich Marion County, Ocala supports very rich pasture land and is a large resource for the equine industry. With over 1,200 horse farms in the area, many different equine activities are represented, including thoroughbred breeding and training, eventing, show jumping, and dressage. The abundance of open space allows for a variety of training and business opportunities for horsemen and recreational options for vacationers. Ocala is home to one of the HITS horse show circuits. Generating over $7 million dollars a year

for the area, the show offers 10 weeks of premier hunter and jumper classes, culminating in March with the Great American $1 Million Grand Prix. The newly-opened Grand Prix stadium is home to visitor-friendly Grand Prix events on Fridays and Sundays, free of charge. Eventing is also represented with the Ocala Horse Properties Winter Event Series which draws the best in U.S. eventing. Out of the horse world, Ocala boasts a beautiful state park, a national forest, a celebrated hiking trail, and a historic district. The Silver Springs State Park is one of the oldest parks in the United States and was Florida’s first tourist destination in the 19th century. Fed by artesian springs on the

Silver River, this attraction offers the crystal clear beauty of one of the last uninhabited springs in the state. Take a glass bottom boat tour and experience the exquisite bird and wildlife population that the park has to offer. The Ocala National Forest is the oldest national forest east of the Mississippi, and receives more visitors than any other national forest in Florida. It has over 600 natural lake and ponds to visit as well as a variety of wildlife including black bears, alligators, wild boar, and river otters. Canoeing, camping, and hiking are all options in the Ocala National Forest. The Florida Trail is 72 miles long and began in Ocala in 1966. Beautifully maintained and marked

trail segments wind through pine forests, wetlands, and open prairies. Camping and backpacking are great activities for a day off. For the less outdoor-oriented, Ocala has a rich civic history. The historic district, known as “The Square,” is ripe with buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, including the CocaCola Building, a bottling plant constructed in 1939. The Square has a friendly, small town ambiance as it welcomes its visitors to walk around and sample foods, listen to music, and shop with local artisans. Sit in the iconic gazebo and watch the crowds meander by. For thrill seekers, a popular day-off destination is Canyons Zip Line and Canopy Tours. Not for the faint of heart, this attraction is located in a 94acre abandoned limestone quarry and resembles a cluster of deep canyons. The entire complex is traversed with zip lines that elevate to 165 feet at their highest point. The course is about a mile long, takes 2 ½ - 3 hours to complete, and is in high demand throughout the winter season. Fly like a bird over a landscape of rocky cliffs and wide blue lakes and try to believe that you are in Florida! While in Ocala, one feels the inevitable tug of Orlando and all that it offers. Only an hour and a half from Disney World, Universal Studios, Sea World, and a myriad of other attractions, kids and adults alike will find entertainment value. Plan at least one day off around Orlando. Finally, salt water is less than two hours away in either direction. Daytona Beach is an easy 90-minute drive and offers an action-packed break for motor enthusiasts and beachcombers alike. To the west, sleepy Cedar Key is one of the hidden gems on the Gulf of Mexico.

“California Dreamin’ ” The California horse show community congregates at the HITS Thermal Desert Circuit in Thermal, Calif. Located in the Coachella Valley, Thermal is 25 miles from Palm Springs and twoand-a-half hours by car from San Diego. Thermal is below sea level and was originally established as a railroad camp for Southern Pacific Railroad employees. HITS moved the horse show venue from Indio to Thermal in 2007, and offers eight weeks of competition culminating in the AIG $1 Million Grand Prix and a $100,000 USHJA International Hunter Derby. Thermal is a tiny town set in the beautiful desert region of southern California. Far from glitz and commercialism, Thermal invokes the quiet solitude of its desert ecosystem. Days off are spent enjoying the temperate climate and dry air of the region. A nearby outlet shopping mall fulfills the retail itch for many. Hiking and backpacking through the painted desert are popular activities and present a chance to experience a variety of natural wildlife and plant life. Many members of the equestrian community visit The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens. Established by members of the local community, this organization provides exhibits on butterflies, exotic animals, endangered species, and indigenous plant life, all in an effort to promote education and preservation. A short car ride away is Palm Springs, a city famous for its mid-century modern architecture and design. In its heyday, Palm Springs was a popular second home and vacation place for the Hollywood elite. In its modern state, it is a destination for architecture aficionados, musicians, artists, and vacationers seeking a unique small-town experience. Palm Springs is sleek and artsy with

unique shops, fine dining, and boutique hotels. The lilt of the city is testament to generations of artists and performers. Also a sports destination, it boasts over 100 golf courses, professional tennis tournaments, and professional polo matches. Palm Springs is hip and trendy, a nice contrast to the peaceful, quiet rhythm of the desert. “Carolina on My Mind” Heading east again, we find one of the oldest equestrian communities in the country in Aiken, S.C. Founded in 1835, the small city has a long tradition as a winter haven for Northeasterners. The Aiken Winter Colony was founded in the late 19th century by famous horsemen Thomas Hitchcock, Sr. and William Whitney, and has grown into a mecca for a myriad of equestrian activities. Horse trials, horse shows, dressage clinics, driving derbies can all be found in Aiken during the winter season. Steeplechase racing occurs in March and October, attracting the best ‘chasers’ in the country. The allure of a day of tailgating, horse racing,

and family activities draws a huge crowd to Aiken. The city also offers the Thoroughbred Racing Hall of Fame and Museum, with popular exhibits documenting the long and illustrious tradition of horse racing in South Carolina. Having been a destination for snowbirds from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Aiken is ripe with beautiful antebellum-style homes in its burgeoning historic district. Downtown Aiken is the quintessential southern Small Town, USA. Quaint and quiet, it invites you to stroll down Main Street window shopping and tasting the local fare. The shops offer an eclectic choice of local artisans’ goods, antiques, and savory foods. The Aiken Center for the Arts promotes arts in the community with five galleries, varied cultural activities, films, and musical performances. A local theatre group holds year-round performances ranging from drama to musicals. For those with interest in astrology, the DuPont Planetarium and RPSEC Observatory offers a chance to gaze at the stars. In the huge dome, live presentations explain the constellations and vis-

Outdoor enthusiasts can spend their days off exploring the Aiken State Park encompassing 1,000 acres of pristine pinelands and offering camping, canoeing, and fishing opportunities. The famed Hitchcock Woods is a land preserve unparalleled in beauty. Equestrians, dog walkers, and joggers may enjoy the over 70 miles of sandy trails and a stunning variety of ecosystems. If golf is your passion, and you have some serious connections, Augusta National is the home of the Masters Tournament and is just a 30-minute journey. Doze by the pool or dip in the sea, go racing or rapelling, Worth Avenue or Main Street, museums or historic houses, pine forest or painted desert the winter equestrian destinations offer something for everyone. Let the horses rest as you check in with the world outside of the barn. Each of these towns stands alone as a great place to visit. The horse connection is a big bonus, but not the only game in town.

He was especially successful in 1988, winning Nations Cup classes at Calgary, Stockholm, Lanaken, Helsinki, Wiesbaden and Wembley. In 1989 he ended his competitive career with a win at the Grand Prix of Berlin and a 2nd place in the Grand Prix of Leeuwarden. Voltaire was a Keur and Preferent stallion with the KWPN, and was one of the top KWPN jumping sires during his life. Sea Lion Proven in top competition, Sea Lion is a 1998, 16.1hh, Jockey Clubregistered Thoroughbred by Sea Salute out of Ivory Today (Caveat). In July 2015, Sea Lion was approved by the American Hanoverian Society. The judges believe Sea Lion’s score may be the highest ever awarded to a thoroughbred, and confirmed their opinion by inviting the dark bay stallion to stand at stud in Germany for a season. Under owner Pam Fisher, Sea Lion competed successfully in twenty-one international eventing competitions, including fifteen at the 3* level, and was Regional Advanced Champion and USEF/ PHR National Advanced Champion. In 2013 Sea Lion retired sound from eventing to begin his breeding career - while continuing to demonstrate his versatility competing in jumpers and hunters. Sea Lion’s crowning attribute is his temperament. Owner Pam Fisher attributes her success in tough competition to Sea Lion’s “confidence-building” personality.
