Advancing Feminist Economic Justice
Throughout 2023, we focused our attention on advancing initiatives that promote economic justice, with a particular emphasis on improving working conditions for women in the garment and forestry sectors. In parallel, we addressed the complexities of unpaid domestic and care work, seeking its recognition and equitable redistribution. We also highlight the challenges that limit the participation of feminist activists at the global level.
Economic justice for women in the garment industry: As part of the Arropa Initiative, we advocated for public policies, organized public actions and regulatory matters to promote improvements in the working conditions of women workers in the garment industry in Tlaxcala and Puebla. The II Forum on Economic Justice for Women Workers in the Garment Industry, held at the Autonomous University of Tlaxcala and attended by nearly 100 people, proved to be a fundamental space for sharing the research conducted by Equidad and promoting dialogue among different actors to promote economic justice for women workers.
A Feminist Perspective from the Global South: Together with our allies Latindadd in Peru, Asociación TRANSformar in Peru, Cedetrabajo in Colombia and Decidamos in Paraguay, we worked from a global south, feminist perspective to promote policies and actions that benefit women, LGBTIQ+ people and historically excluded groups. We have redoubled our collective efforts to find solutions that respond to the needs of the most affected communities in the face of the care, economic and environmental crises in Latin America and the Caribbean.
At the global level, Equidad organized the first Learning and Strategy Lab in Bangkok in response to the challenges facing feminist activists in the Global South. Thirteen activists from Africa, Asia and Latin America came together to reflect on the current feminist agendas and to redefine global advocacy work. The South Feminist Solidarity Alliance was born, campaigning against Palestinian genocide and advocating for a reparations and economic justice agenda for the Global South.
Strengthening Sustainable Forestry Development with a Gender Perspective:
This year marked an important milestone, thanks to the support of the Canada Fund for Local Initiatives with the project: Strengthening the Support Program for Sustainable Forestry Development. To address the various barriers that prevent women from fully participating in productive forestry projects, we organized nine workshops. 115 forestry stakeholders participated, including 34 members of CONAFOR’s management staff, 143 forestry technical advisors, 172 women from the Sustainable Forestry Development Support Program, and 85 men from local communities.
