WHAT IS... IS...

Equine Metabolic Syndrome? Insulin resistance is the reduction in the horse’s ability to respond appropriately to the hormone insulin. Insulin is a hormone which plays a key role in the regulation of blood glucose levels. In addition to its role in controlling blood sugar levels, insulin is also involved in the storage of fat. Ponies or horses that are “good doers” are examples of this, carrying heavy thick crests and fatty deposits over the body. Cortisol, a hormone released by the adrenal glands also plays a role in creating fat storage. Cortisol stimulates fat and carbohydrate metabolism for fast energy in the case of flight /fight reactions which via feedback stimulates insulin release and maintenance of blood sugar levels to keep “running” or “fighting”. The end result of these actions can cause the increased and insatiable appetite often found in ponies with this condition. If the horse in question is not able to run, play and move over large areas of land as they would if in the wild their cortisol “trigger” is never switched off, meaning that cortisol is always being manufactured by the adrenals. In cases of PPID-Cushings (pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction) the same effect occurs except that a tumour may be causing the excess cortisol production. Diagnosis of this condition does need to be accurately done – a blood cortisol test is not necessarily an indicator of a tumour. A vet needs to assess clinically and fully with sonography to diagnose PPID accurately. Fat is also believed to be the place where fat-soluble toxins and excess hormones are stored to keep them from recirculating in the blood stream. This may also lead to inflammation and further hormone feedback loops causing a compounding effect resulting in laminitis. 4 EQUINE NEWS.COM.AU
What is thought to cause it? Processed feeds and hay/pasture high in NON-STRUCTURAL CARBOHYDRATES and unnatural living conditions is one potential cause behind the increase in this syndrome amongst our modern equine population: much like people living in cities in high density housing and eating fast food! Improved Pastures are a big problem for these types of horses - clover, lucerne, rye can all be problematic even if its hay. New research is showing that there are also associations between endocrine disrupting chemicals and equine metabolic syndrome. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals are man-made chemicals, found in products such as pesticides, plastics and personal care products. Horses are most likely to be exposed to these through feed and the chemical treatment of paddocks. Pollution, smog, polluted water supplies, pesticides, herbicides, plastics, and even disruptive sounds can affect the delicate balance of the neuroendocrine system. The biggest concern is Genetic Modified Organisms (GMOs). These crops have been developed specifically to allow top dressing of Glyphosate. It is now understood that Glyphosate is residual and will damage metabolic pathways of gut flora. There is a strong relationship between the microbiota health and Insulin Resistance in humans. Some new evidence (and legal cases from the US) suggest that Glyphosate causes lymphoma in people. GMO crops in Australia are as follows (Source DPI): Lucerne, Lupins, wheat, some oaten varieties and sugar beet. No GMO soy is grown in Australia; however, GMO soy is imported and is used in literally all stock feeds. Soy has its own concerns, and I am not a fan of using it due to the potential endocrine disrupting effects the phytoestrogens in the plant may cause. Soybean agglutinins (SBA) also known as soybean lectins (SBL) are lectins found in soybeans. It is a family of similar legume lectins which can be found in lupins, mung and even lucerne. A lectin is an ‘antinutrient’ that chelates minerals compounding the impacts of a GMO feed stuff. For horses the most significant one is trypsin inhibitor AUTUMN 2021
which interrupts many metabolic pathways in a horse’s GIT. Trypsin is a protein-digesting enzyme manufactured by the horse which breaks up proteins into amino acids so they can be utilised. Whilst documentation from feed companies and nutritionists suggests it’s only the RAW soy that causes this problem, I have found in practice when helping horses through the IR syndrome removing soy and lucerne from the diet of these horses has an almost immediate positive effect. This backs up other reading I have come across which suggests In human foodstuffs, less than half of this lectin is deactivated even with extensive cooking (boiling for over 20 minutes). Cooking therefore is not sufficient to correct the problem caused by the anti-nutrient factor. Heavy metals in our food chain (like arsenic, lead and mercury) are major endocrine disruptors. Using a chelating agent such as Zeolite will chelate these during digestion of potentially contaminated food and help to make sure that contamination is reduced. We are only now becoming aware of micro-plastics and the impacts of these in our food chain and environment.
Circadian Rhythms, Living conditions and exercise An interesting factor of these syndromes is the impact of negative stress and daylight hours. It’s important to understand that horses most susceptible to these conditions can have the following profile: stabled under lights. This treatment of our horses is very disturbing to their hormones and as part of management and restoration of the metabolism and the hypothalamic-immune System and the neuro-endocrine axis is to ensure that your horse is not stabled or kept under lights. In order for the hypothalamic-immune system and the neuro-endocrine axis to entrain (that is, start to work as it should in balance) the natural circadian rhythms of your horse must be respected. Keep him with other horses, running around naturally.
Balancing the Hypothalamus, Thyroid and Adrenal axis A key factor in managing these syndromes is to understand the neuroendocrine system and the role that it plays in homeostasis. Once you understand this, it’s simply a matter of using herbs specific to these systems and feed a whole food natural diet that is supporting the microbiome (pre biotic), low GI with improved living conditions.
Can herbs restore metabolic harmony and balance the endocrine system? When reading conventional literature on Cushing’s and Metabolic syndrome, one is led to believe that there is very little one can do. At best you are treating the symptoms, and at worst you are adding to underlying causal factors. From a herbalist’s perspective, I see these conditions as being not only managed, but also successfully corrected. We have had so much personal success with these conditions now that I am surprised by those who are so pessimistic by the diagnosis!

Herbal and Feeding Program Removal from pasture, diet correction and herbal therapy. Contact McDowells directly to assess dietary requirements. Elimination herbs – used to help the metabolism of adipose tissue. These herbs (called Alteratives) also help the blood stream remove excess hormones and inflammation. Burdock, Echinacea, Garlic, and Fenugreek are what I commonly use. Neuro-endocrine support - Combinations of herbs that support the Hypothalamus, Thyroid and Adrenal axis are used to nourish and improve function of these important glands. . Even though the pituitary is the problem in Cushing’s, supporting the master gland is essential when balancing the endocrine system, in particular the hypothalamus. Chaste Tree, Black Cohosh and Hawthorn can be used, as well as Ginseng. Supporting the metabolic partners – making sure that the liver and kidneys and pancreas is functioning well is simply common sense. Herbs that can be fed regularly: Fennel, Dandelion, St Marys Thistle, buchu and rosehips. Supporting the gut is also critical – creating a healthy microbiota, like composting the gut with herbs that microbes love (this is what a prebiotic is) and helping the whole ecology of the microbiota is essential. The herbal formulas I use in practice are: McDowells Insulin Resistance Program • McDowells Metabolic-S • McDowells Equigesta Pre • McDowells Alleviate (in the case of laminitis)

About the Author – Catherine McDowell
Medicine of Mother Nature… I was first introduced to the concept of Herbal Lore when I was very young. I think one of the earliest influences I can remember was from my grandparents, who were very traditional Bathurst farmers of the well known Cox family. My grandfather had the “people’s home library” which was a compendium of all kinds of home cures. Herbal Medicine is, at its core, studying nature and the humanities. It’s about observing our diet, our environment and how we respond. Keeping a balance is difficult in the modern era as we are no longer interacting with our environment in the same way as we may have done even as little as a 100 years ago. As a Dorothy Hall graduate working along side the well known Robert McDowell for many years and furthering my education with Dennis Stewart, I have developed my own unique application of herbal remedies. Working primarily with animals (Horses and Dogs) has been the most rewarding. Having seen herbs work so well in so many cases has proven to me time and again the under-utilised power of herbal medicine. It is heartening to see now Vets, and some Medical Doctors seeing the traditional application of herbs as useful. My comprehensive service includes free animal consultations 24/7 via my web site, and face to face consultation at 62 Corporation Avenue, Bathurst NSW 2795.

ENVIRONMENTAL
Enrichment When I was at university doing my Equine Science degree, I chose an elective called Captive Animal Behaviour. I had completed Equine Behaviour and Horse Training as part of my degree, and was fascinated by animal behaviour. Captive Animal Behaviour brought in a whole new field of information, as it focused on wild animals within a captive environment. The strongest component of the course was the topic of Environmental Enrichment. This dictates that the human handler of any animal is responsible not only for the physical needs of the animal; food, water, shelter etc., but also for the emotional and social needs of the animal. How this is
Suzy Maloney BEqSc achieved is to enrich the environment such that it resembles as closely as possible the natural environment. For wildlife parks and zoos this is a primary concern. Animals provided with an enriched environment are happier, healthier, live longer, breed more easily and are easier to handle. While this is recognised in the field of captive animals, it is often not addressed with domestic animals. Horses are kept in small stables and yards, without other horses and sometimes even without basic needs such as shelter. A horse’s environment needs to be interesting and varied and provide social interactions for them to thrive. Inside every domestic horse is the origional wild horse.

AUTUMN 2021
The natural environment for horses is the open plain. They can roam up to 40km per day in search of food and water. Every day they move over varied terrain, rocky areas, hills, waterways. They live within a herd of other horses and have regular interactions with the other members. Social structure and friendships within a herd are extremely important. When horses want to lay down to sleep, others stand guard over them so they can relax and sleep safely. Horses are forever on the lookout for predators and the safety provided by a herd can never be replaced by a human. Our history with horses started with them being food, first we ate them. Then we discovered they could pull things for us and carry us on their backs. The use of horses enabled humans to expand their geographical horizons, go to war and embark on large scale agriculture. As the number of humans grew, we started living in cities, and horses were put in stables as there was no longer room for more natural environments. Somehow, we retained this idea even after it was no longer appropriate. In our contemporary world we have cars, tractors, etc. In most instances horses are now relegated to the position of leisure. They are kept for pleasure riding and competition. To have happy, thriving horses we need to try and provide an environment that resembles a natural horse environment as much as possible. As an absolute baseline they need pasture to eat, water, room to roam and run, a herd (or at least 1 other horse), varied terrain and adequate shelter to seek refuge under during storms and hot summers. These seem simple things, but there are quite a lot of horses in the domestic environment who don’t have these. If it is not possible to provide any of these basics due to your circumstances, perhaps a compromise of some sort could be found? Or maybe get creative and see how interesting and amazing you can make your horses environment, have fun with it. All animals in our care have fundamental needs for their species. As their custodians we have an obligation to provide for these needs. By ensuring we provide an environment suitable for each species we not only improve their health and happiness, but also the amount of work we need to do for their care is reduced, a win for everyone.

Building Your Horse’s Trust
How staying present and performing a gentle acupressure session on your horse can help deepen his trust in you. By Amy Snow and Nancy Zidonis If you think your horse knows exactly what you’re thinking and feeling when you’re riding, you are absolutely right! Horses are incredibly sensitive to human thoughts and emotions, so his level of trust – and ultimately his behavior – depends a lot on your mental state during a ride. Because horses are prey animals, their safety requires that they are constantly alert. They rely on their keen ability to read everything in their environment – including you – and the ambient emotional tenor of their surroundings directly impacts their emotional stability.
‘Bond’ courtesy of: Agnieszka Gulczynska Fotografia https://fotogulczynska.wordpress.com
The importance of being present When you’re with your horse, staying present is one of the best ways to earn his trust. If you get mentally distracted by what you’re going to make for dinner or what you need to buy at the grocery store, your horse may spook or bolt before you realize what’s happening. He’ll pick up on the fact that you aren’t present, and will overreact to the snap of a broken twig because he thinks he has to protect himself. Even the most “pushbutton” horses experience the “fight or flight” instinct when they suspect they aren’t safe.
A Chinese medicine perspective In Chinese medicine the spirit of the animal is important. Emotions such as fear and anxiety can seriously disrupt the health and well-being of an animal – especially a prey animal. When faced with a fearful situation, horses want to run away as fast as they can. If the horse can’t get away, anxiety builds, and at an extreme level of stress, horses can become selfdestructive, which is not a good survival strategy. Your job as a rider is to help allay your horse’s fears and provide a sense of security. Building trust between you and your horse is essential, even before mounting to ride. Being present while riding lets your horse know you are alert and want to protect him. Trainers tell you to look where you want the horse to go because the horse knows where you are looking. It’s a good motto.

An acupressure session to build trust Acupressure is based on Chinese medicine and can help build the bond between you and your horse. There are specific acupressure points, also called “acupoints,” that are known to promote a sense of trust. Just by offering your horse this acupressure session every fourth or fifth day as part of your grooming regimen, you will enhance your connection. When your horse trusts you and you both feel a strong sense of being bonded, your training and riding together takes on a whole new level of enjoyment. Float loading your horse...
These are all issues I have been called to help with. I bet these experiences will resonate with many of you. Hopefully, once you have read this article, you will have a clearer idea of how to go about loading safely and, vitally, what it is you are doing right and wrong in float loading your horse.
Let’s talk about it from the horses’ perspective: 1. A float is a small, dark space. This isn’t a naturally inviting environment for them. In fact, this can be an extremely aversive place, indeed. 2. In some horses that are used to following our feet into the float. When we leave them, there is no point of reference for them. Horses can then panic. 3. They may have been lunged/chased/whipped/dragged into the float, creating a fearful state. Fear and pain become strongly ingrained. Worst of all, they have suffered some sort of injury in a float. It then becomes something to be avoided at all costs. 4. If someone has driven the float erratically with the horse losing his footing, or the driver has accelerated around corners (thereby leading to the horse scrambling) the horse will have an associative fear memory of this. 5. The horse has been successful in an escape trial from the float. You may have a horse that bolts as he reaches the base of the ramp. As these behaviours become more practised, they form part of a habit very quickly. 6. You are fearful. Your anxiety levels rise. You start to move quickly, furtively, and the horse doesn’t respond well to you. Your heart rate is up. The horse detects that you are anxious, and his behaviour begins to get worse too.
What do you think rewards the horse at that moment?
ESCAPE!
From our perspective: It’s no big deal! 1. He always loaded well at the old place. (Your horse cannot reason, so forget trying to explain this one) 2. It isn’t a big deal, I promise. (Your horse cannot reason.)
...nightmare? or ‘thanks, maybe some other time!’ How many of you dream of going out to a trail ride, a clinic or the beach, but don’t even dare get the float out? Or, for those of you who have moved passed the fear of hitching up the float, are you already worrying about how you are going to get the horse on? Or how he/she will go on when it’s time to come home? Some familiar clients’ experiences: • You are moving agistment and need to be at the new property at a pre-arranged time. The stress levels are already high, and then you start the process of loading the horse. He simply will not move his feet onto the ramp. Not for anything. • The beach ride was calling. You went with the utmost dread that the last time you were there, it took 4 hours to load your horse on the return trip. Your worse fears come true, and the horse will not load once you’ve ridden. • It’s dark, you’ve been to an evening clinic until 7.30 pm. You are both tired, and you really want to go home. The horse slips on the float – there is dew on the ramp. The horse gets a fright and won’t load in the dark. 12 EQUINE NEWS.COM.AU
3. It is only down the road, and he’s been there loads of times. (Your horse cannot reason). 4. He’ll love it when you get there (Guess what? Yes, you’ve got it….) 5. You loved it last time! (Finally, your horse cannot reason!) And, so on and so forth until you slump down on the float ramp, your bottom landing heavily and begin to sob with frustration. Or, if you are really unlucky, someone unhelpful arrives and suggests you lunge, chase, hit, shout or, “show him whose boss!” So, how do we go about float loading carefully and safely?
Take Your Time! Allow plenty of time to get to your destination. Double the amount of time it usually takes you. That way, you will not feel rushed and anxious. Importantly, you will both feel calmer when loading.
The Training Part Remember this saying, “Float Loading is simply a line of well-trained responses”. Here we go:
Equipment: • Helmet • Schooling whip • Gloves • Float Boots (not compulsory, but nice to have) • Rope Head-collar and a lead rope/rein. Preferably 2m plus long. • Rubber-coated anti-rearing bit if your horse has a habit of bolting or rearing from the ramp. AUTUMN 2021
Before you begin:
Steps to training successful loading:
The fear of the float will naturally challenge your leading responses. Therefore your horse’s leading responses need to be deepened before going anywhere near the float. It is also important that the horse does not fear the whip. It should only really be an extension of your arm and NEVER used for punishment.
Choose a day you feel calm, and there is nowhere you need to float your horse to. Park your float on a flat area with a good, non-slip surface around the float.
TRAINING NOTES:
Horses learn by Trial and Error. This means that the behaviour that comes BEFORE the pressure is the one that is reinforced.
• It is vital that you stop the pressure (with either rein or whip taps) when the horse is offering the correct response.
TAKE SEVERAL LONG, DEEP BREATHS
• It is equally vital that you do not stop the lead pressure and tapping when the horse is offering the incorrect response of running back. • It is essential that Negative Reinforcement (Pressure/Release) is combined with Positive Reinforcement by using a wither rub.
Start with giving your horse a nice long wither rub. This helps to lower their heart-rate and blood pressure. It is also a great way to reward a horse. 1. Have the partition wide as this will be Part A. The partition can be slowly re-positioned as the float training moves forward. 2. Ask the horse to move towards the float ramp and stand facing the horse’s rear. 3. Facing the horse’s rear is important because if he/she starts to run backwards, you can run with them, whip tapping the shoulder with lead-rein pressure saying move forward. 4. Aim for one step onto the float ramp. Reward with release of your rein pressure, your voice and that all-important wither rub. 5. Ask for a slow step off the ramp by using the lead-rein pressure back towards the chest. Once the horse offers a step back with each front leg, then remove any rein pressure. 6. Your horse needs to learn to step on and off the float ramp calmly and with light pressure. 7. At this point, I like to train them to take as many steps as I want onto the ramp and then move back off the ramp when I ask. This is deepening your ‘stop’ and ‘go’ responses before heading into the more aversive area.
Is your horse lame, muscle sore or stiff in it’s movement?

WONDER JOINT 13
8. Don’t worry too much if the horse is stepping onto the ramp from the side. Once you have a light pressure to the ‘go’ forward, you can straighten them with gentle whip taps to the hindquarters – near the hocks, which is a yield of the hindquarters.
Part B:
9. Train your horse to walk up and back all over the ramp.
Self-Loading
10. Ask for your horse to take one step inside the float. Wait, then ask for one step back – you are beginning to gradually ‘shape’ the behaviour you want whilst your horse is calm.
Walk towards the float calmly and with a good rhythm. As you stop your feet moving, keep asking for forwards, put the lead rein over their neck, and, if necessary, gently apply a light whip tap to the top of the rump to encourage them to keep moving forward. Be ready to tap faster if the horse tries to reverse out.
11. When you ask for a step forward or back – ensure that your horse stays put without pressure until you ask for the next step. 12. When your horse leads calmly into the float and reverses calmly out of the float, then it is time to teach them to move into the float without you.
Will be the same as Part A, with the movement of steps but now, gradually move the float partition in towards the centre and keep training the horse to walk up and backwards off the float.
This will quickly become a horse that self-loads. Once loaded, and calmly standing. You can train the horse to reverse when you ask by giving a signal that tells him that you want him to start reversing. I remove the bum bar first. Then I give my horse a tap on the top of the tail and one very gentle tail pull to say move backwards – I also say “back” just before I do the tail pull. The horse will learn to back out on my voice cue without having to do anything else. The important thing to note is that he only moves backwards when I give him the cue.
Common problems & Simple Solutions. Turning away: Some horses want to turn their heads away (to make the aversive thing go-away), followed by a turn with the shoulders and then the hindquarters. There is usually an attempt at bolting as the shoulders begin to turn. This needs to be addressed quickly at the start of the head turn. The horse needs to keep his head facing in the direction of the float. The thing to take note of is, do not turn your horse away in a circle then re-present him to start float loading again. This is reinforcing the wrong thing by turning his head and body away from the float. Running/jumping on:

This should not be encouraged as it is part of the flight response. See if you can slow the walk down before you get near the float. On a different day to train - Try practising over a pole, slowing the front leg as the horse moves his leg over the pole. If you practise this, you will find you have much more control over the front legs when the horse begins to step onto the float. Not staying on: This is a problem with your ‘go’ button. The horse steps back and feels the pressure on the lead rein. He should move forward to release the tension on the lead rein. Try gentle whip taps on the rump if the horse attempts to move backwards out of the float without being asked. Rearing: If the horse rears to prevent loading; keep tapping with the whip until the horse lands and steps forwards. The horse may try this again – repeat. You will find that very soon, the horse no longer trials rearing. If you stop tapping when the horse rears, then both the flight response and head-tossing are reinforced (i.e. more likely to be trialled again) If you are worried about your horse hitting his/her head on the trailer roof – there are various poll guards on the market to help. With correct training, however, the horse learns to lower the head to avoid the roof.
TRAINING TIPS: • Ensure that the timing of your release of pressure is good. • Use lots of wither rubs (Positive Reinforcement) • Ensure you are not rushing. Take your time. Slow is best. • A shorter session is far preferable to a long one. • Your horse’s ability to learn and concentrate is short and takes a lot of mental energy. • If things go wrong. Finish on a good note, then go and make yourself a cup of tea. AUTUMN 2021

Choke is a not so uncommon problem in horses, and can lead to devastating consequences, so it is a condition that owners and trainers need to become educated about. Unlike in people, where choking refers to a blocked airway, “choke” in horses is referring to a blockage of the oesophagus - the tubular part of the gastro-intestinal tract that carries food boluses from the throat to the stomach. Signs of a horse choking could include it bracing its neck and stretching its neck forward (pic 1), or food coloured fluid running out of both nostrils, or the horse salivating (pic 2), or even the horse laying down and/or rolling (pic 3) as seen with colic (abdominal pain).

3 The blockage usually comprises of a mass of poorly chewed food. But it can also be a foreign body like a ball of chewed up lead rope. The poorly chewed food will not be adequately moistened and lubricated with saliva, and so does not freely travel along the tube pushed by gentle muscular contractions of the oesophageal wall. Or it may be an improperly chewed piece of carrot for example.
• Hospitalisation facilities for horses requiring ongoing treatment • Digital real-time radiography, ultrasonography and endoscopy, including for airways and stomachs
Reasons for the poorly chewed feed include the horse rushing or gutsing down some dry pellets or feedstuffs if it is very hungry or in a hurry to eat the food before a herd mate chases them away.
• Equine podiatry, with particular interest in laminitis treatment and rehabilitation
Bad teeth are another common reason for choking, as the horse cannot or does not want to chew the food properly due to dysfunctional teeth or pain. So then it tries to swallow the food before it has been chewed properly and moistened into a spindle shaped and slippery bolus ready to be swallowed. The food then gets stuck somewhere along the oesophagus tube, and then anything the horse keeps eating will be unable to pass to the stomach, and a back log of food and saliva will overflow out the nostrils and mouth.

$142.50 each 4 If the horse cannot swallow the food and saliva, it then either runs out the nose, or even worse, runs down into the trachea (wind-pipe) to the lungs. Sometimes the horse will manage to clear the obstruction itself in the first 10 minutes or so. But if it does not clear itself, then it could be in real danger of ongoing problems. Should the owner suspect the horse is choking, it is important to prevent the horse from eating more food that would make the condition worse. You can do that by taking the food away, and/or by muzzling the horse with a nose bag, or a bucket with holes cut in the bottom of it. Then the owner should phone their emergency vet to alert them that they may be needed soon. If the owner sees the horse choke on its food, then sometimes a hose placed in the front of the mouth to rinse out the mouth, and then encourage the horse to swallow some saliva and water can moisten a EQUINE NEWS.COM.AU

newly blocked or minimally blocked oesophagus. But this procedure is frowned upon by many experts, as it also carries a real risk of forcing the horse to aspirate some of the hose water into the lungs and this can lead to life threatening pneumonia. Massaging of the neck (pic 5) can also be done to attempt to move the blockage along, but that would only be of benefit in very early cases, and if the blockage was actually in the neck part of the oesophagus. Unfortunately, most choke blockages occur inside the chest cavity where massaging of the oesophagus is impossible. If the horse has been choking for hours, then a hose in the mouth will be more harmful than beneficial. And it is also worth considering that other conditions can resemble a choke episode and one of them is Hendra Virus infection. So, ensure that you protect yourself and any other handlers in the way of wearing appropriate Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) when handling any sick or injured horse. Like so many medical emergencies in horses in Australia now, the process of getting an emergency veterinarian to attend will be so much easier and straight forward if the sick or injured horse is currently vaccinated against Hendra Virus.
The attending emergency vet will assess the horse and confirm or rule out if it is choking. This is often done by passing a nasogastric stomach tube, with or without the horse sedated. If the blockage is not easy to relieve, sometimes a muscle relaxant is given, and other times, intravenous fluids, antibiotics, antiinflammatories etc are needed. If the choke is severe and cannot be unblocked, then sometimes referral to a clinic where the oesophagus can be scoped to see directly what is blocking it is required. Sometime a defect or stricture in the oesophagus is the cause. Severe chokes carry the risk of the oesophagus rupturing and causing a life-threatening chest infection. They also can cause aspiration of food and saliva into the lungs leading to life threatening pneumonia. For that reason, it is important to monitor closely patients who have been treated for choke. Monitoring their temperature two to three times daily will often alert the owner of any fever that may accompany a developing pneumonia. Other signs include a cough, dullness, not wanting to eat, sore feet from laminitis, rapid or laboured breathing, painful ribs etc. Sometimes the vet will start the choke patient on antibiotic coverage as well. Keeping the horse out grazing with its head down, minimising dust inhalation, wetting the feed are also often part of the nursing aftercare of a choke patient.
Going forward and to help prevent a recurrence of a choke episode, several things need to be done.
5
Firstly, a thorough oral examination by an experienced equine dental veterinarian to look for causes of chewing difficulties. Then making sure there is not social pressure from herd mates for the horse to rush its food down. For example, if there are 3 horses being hand fed in a paddock, then make sure there are 4 feeders for them to choose from, so that the bottom of the pecking order is not so pressured to rush its food. Also, to ensure the feed is appropriately either wetted down, or mixed with fibre, so the horse needs to chew it enough so that adequate amounts of lubricating saliva mix with the food prior to swallowing. Another tip is to add some large (10-15 cm diameter) rocks to the feed bin, to help slow the horse down. In summing up, this is not an uncommon problem in horses, and some horses do choke repeatedly, so it is best to know how and what you will do in times of a choke episode.

SOY –
BEANS & HULLS
Dr Jennifer Stewart

A widely-used and popular phrase is that ‘feeding horses is both an art and a science’. The science underpins the formulation of a ration and the art is adjusting this ration to best fit the circumstances of an individual horse. There is not one correct way to feed any horse. This allows flexibility to adjust the ration for an individual horse – but it also allows the development of controversies, myths and feeding traditions that are based on little or no objective evidence. There are lots of discussions and concerns around feeding soy to horses – probably more so than any other feedstuff! After water, the first and foremost nutrient required is protein. Proteins are the only foods which can make body tissue. Proteins are long chains of amino acids - the ‘building blocks’ of all life and necessary for growth, development, reproduction, and healthy tissues. Amino acids are of two basic types - essential and nonessential. Essential amino acids are those that the body cannot make and which must be provided by the diet. These include: arginine, histidine, isoleucine, leucine, methionine, cystine, phenylalanine, tyrosine, threonine, tryptophan and valine. Other amino acids are called ‘conditionally essential’ because demands can exceed the body’s ability to make them. If a feed provides an adequate amount of essential amino acids for maintenance and growth, it is referred to as containing high-quality protein. On the other hand, if the food does not supply the horse with recommended essential amino acids, it is called low-quality protein.
Is your horse itchy? Any signs of a fungal, bacterial or yeast infection? EquineCare Probiotic is an innovative, effective and safe topical spray for minor skin conditions such as mud fever, rain scald and thrush. May help with Queensland itch as there is often a bacterial or fungal component. Simply spray directly to the site of infection. No need to remove scabs.
Available at stockists throughout Australia or order online at : www.equinecareprobiotic.com.au See what our customers have to say: “I meant to message you and give you a big thank you - I got a bottle from you and it’s fantastic! I have tried everything for my sensitive chestnut mare including steroids friom the vet. She’s been struggling with QLD Itch since we moved north, and the area on her chest and around her udder were constant scabs. I really wish I had taken a photo, because in only a few days its gone, not reduced, gone!. Awesome product, thank you!”
The % protein is not related to the quality of the protein. A feed may contain 20% protein – but if it doesn’t have any essential amino acids, it may be only 5% useable. The amount of protein in the diet that the body can use is related to the proteins lysine content. If the lysine content is low, all other proteins in the diet will be unusable and wasted (Figure 1). If a feed or protein supplement has lots of nonessential amino acids ie unusable protein it just becomes extra protein that the body will have to convert to urea/ammonia. Soymeal contains the highest quality protein and the highest amount of lysine of the plant-based protein supplements. For example soymeal is 44% protein, lupins 35% and sugar beet 8.6%. But it’s the amino acids that count because deficiency of any single one will place a limit on tissue repair and building. It’s helpful to think of tissue building as similar to making a cake! Each tissue, like each cake has it’s own recipe. If you’re making a chocolate cake (the best sort of cake!) and you run out of cocoa, it doesn’t matter how much butter, sugar, eggs etc you have, you can’t make a chocolate cake. In horses, lysine, methionine and threonine are widely used in ‘recipes’ for cell repair and building. If the diet doesn’t provide enough of these ingredients, cell repair and production stops. Or if you prefer wine, the shortest plank in the wine barrel sets a limit to how much wine the barrel has. Similarly, a deficiency of an essential amino acid places a limit on how much protein the body can build. Soymeal provides nearly 34grams of lysine, around 7g methionine and 19g of threonine per kg, lupins 16g of lysine, 3g of methionine and 13g of threonine per kg, while sugar beet provides approximately 4-5g lysine, 0.8g of methionine and 4g of threonine per kg.

Protein for growth: Lysine is required in greater amounts in growing horses. Without adequate lysine, foals will have a decreased growth rate because the tissues will not have the amino acids necessary for growth. Protein is also necessary for maintenance of body tissues, lactation and exercise capacity and performance. Although the horse is not working, growing or producing milk, protein is still needed for maintenance of body tissues and cells - regrowth of skin cells, hair and tissue cell maintenance. Without adequate protein intake, hair will begin to look dull and there is potential for weight loss. Protein for repair: Soybean meal is high in essential amino acids which is really important to heal the damaged hooves in horses that have had laminitis. Using soybean meal as the primary protein source in a diet and adding lysine and methionine makes most diets as correct as possible. For horses with laminitis, soymeal delivers again. Starch and sugar from any source can be dangerous for horses at risk or with clinical and subclinical laminitis. Feeds with less than 15% sugar and starch are indicated. Soybean meal contains approximately 12% sugar + starch and has a low glycaemic index. But soymeal also contains many other beneficial bioactive compounds shown to reduce insulinresistance and support the beneficial gut bacteria and suppress growth of pathogenic bacteria in humans and other animals. In addition to lots of good antioxidants, soymeal contains isoflavones, quecertins and galactooligosaccharides (one of the most potent prebiotics) that improve insulin sensitivity. There has been some research that demonstrates a potential negative effect of soy on insulin responses and plasma adiponectin and some have extrapolated this to horses. However, the relevance to equine laminitis/insulin resistance/EMS is questionable as the work was done in male
monkeys https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2570347/ pdf/nihms57023.pdf
SOY HULLS Soy hulls are high in pectin and other soluble fibres. Because they are digested mostly in the caecum and contain relatively small amounts of starch, their use in horse diets does not pose a high risk for colic and laminitis. Soybean hulls are more completely and rapidly fermented by the caecal microflora than is hay and are categorised as ‘super fibres’. Super fibres provide slightly less energy than oats and barley – but more energy than other forages/roughage. Soybean hulls appear to stimulate caecal fermentation and to be a suitable replacement for hay in equine diets. This may be an especially important finding for owners of geriatric horses that often have difficulty consuming roughages. Soyhulls are another option to provide fibre during times of scarcity and drought or when hay is unavailable. As always, to avoid digestive upset, any change to a horse’s diet should be made slowly over a period of several days. The recommended method of introducing a new dietary component is to include a small amount in the first feeding and continue to increase the proportion of new feed to old feed for four or five days until the desired amount is being fed. Soyhulls appear to be an acceptable replacement for 25-50% of the total forage in diets for horses. Soybean hulls appear to stimulate caecal fermentation and are a suitable replacement for hay. They are also more digestible than traditional fibre sources. For instance, hay is 40-60% digestible, depending on its quality, and soy hulls are 80% and 75% digestible.

Multiple uses for soy hulls: • Horses with dental problems often can’t eat enough hay to meet their fibre requirements. Soyhulls can help. • Horses on high grain intakes may have a reduced hay intake super fibres are ideal. • Horses that have difficulty maintaining weight. • Horses working at moderate speeds over long distances, such as endurance horses benefit from good gut health. Super fibres can increase water intake. • Super fibres can support energy requirements for horses that need low starch feeds eg PSSM and recurrent exertional rhabdomyolysis (RER) Raw whole soybeans are not recommended because they contain substances that decrease growth rate. Heat processing destroys these growth inhibitors. Soybean meal has been chosen as the main source of protein in horse feeds for decades and has proven to be safe for many horses. Soy hulls may contain traces of the growth inhibitors and its worth checking with the manufacturer.

The Bitless Pony Club started in March 2021! The Club has been created to support young people to become empowered and confident equestrians through compassionate connection with horses. Young people aged 8 to 18 of all genders who desire to interact with horses using Natural Horsemanship principles are welcome. Bitless Pony Club is a place where you can bring your horse and be with other young horse enthusiasts in a supportive, non-competitive, fun, learning environment. Rally days include jumping, dressage, liberty, yielding, animal communication, desensitisation, clicker training, connection exercises and so much more. We have three highly qualified bitless instructors each with specialist expertise and a huge year planned! The Clubs Core Beliefs and guiding principles are as follows – • Recognition that horses are sentient beings. • It is not ok to harm others to achieve your goal. • Understanding that ‘Force starts where knowledge ends’, we impart equine knowledge such that young people have relationships with horses that are kind and compassionate. • Non-competitive – we encourage young equestrians to help and support each other rather than competing against each other. In line with these core beliefs, horse gear that inflicts pain on horses will not be used (e.g., bits, spurs, tie-downs, martingales, etc). Participants can ride or lead their horses. Those who want to ride and are still learning the skills to ride independently, will need a parent/ helper to lead them.
IA E D ME E A S RE L
Rally days are on Sunday every 4 weeks from 10am to 3pm. Morning classes are from 10 to 12 and afternoon classes from 1 to 3. There is a mix of ridden and groundwork activities. Young equestrians will have a chance to experience a wide range of horse activities over each day. Dates as follows – May 23rd, June 20th, July 18th, Aug 15th, Sept 12th, and Oct 10th. A one-off Bitless Pony Club membership is $50. The day fee is $50 for members and $75 for casuals. Numbers are capped at 12 to ensure everyone receives quality instruction and support from the instructors. The venue is at Teven, NSW, with an undercover arena, roundyard and lots of other great facilities. Enquiries can be addressed to Suzy, contact details and Facebook page below. The rally days for the year are posted as events and can be booked and paid for through the Facebook page. See you there!! Suzy Maloney B.Eq.Sc. Happy Horses Bitless Considerate Horsemanship Phone: 0401 249 263 Email: suzy@happyhorsesbitless.com Facebook: Bitless Pony Club Independent economic assessments of the project have been completed and demonstrate the significant benefit this project will have on the local and regional community: • $3.8 million annual economic contribution. • 4 full time jobs during the construction phase (12 months). • 24 full time jobs per year once operating (4 direct and 20 indirect). • A total of 35,000 patrons per year across various events and site bookings. This is driven by extensive modelling and analysis which predicts:
YVEP raises $1.25 million from local community for Regional Equestrian Facility
• 66 days of Equestrian Sport events per year, including Show Jumping, Pony Club, Adult Riding, Dressage and Western Rodeo.
On Friday, March 5th, YVEP submitted its application to the Federal Government Building Better Regions Fund (BBRF).
• 176 days of Equestrian Sport bookings per year, including coaching sessions, riding for the disabled, interschool and junior clinics, and non-equestrian events and functions.
With the extensive and generous support of local clubs, stakeholders, community leaders and the broader Equestrian Sport community, YVEP has put forward a compelling case for investment. The final total raised, without any public contributions, was more than $1,250,000. If successful, BBRF will match this funding, ensuring an extensive $2.5 million equestrian and multi-purpose venue can be developed as an initial development stage. YVEP Chairman, Geoff Sinclair explained:
YVEP would like to acknowledge the outstanding support provided by the equestrian community and everyone else who contributed to the planning and submission. More information and images: www.yvep.com.au Contact: Geoff Sinclair – YVEP Chairman 0418 319 339 – geoff@brigadoonhorses.com.au
“The project will serve the needs of our local riders with new and enhanced facilities to enable the best of conditions for multi-discipline competition right through to international level events.” “Extensive research and planning has informed our recent progress and ensured we are shovel ready. We are anticipating turning soil and completing the project within 12 months of a successful BBRF outcome.” 34 EQUINE NEWS.COM.AU

Lucky Kids Equine is founded by Stacey, a passionate horse rider who has always been involved in horses since a young age. Stacey lives with her husband, Paul and two daughters, Elaina and Charlotte, in Victoria. “Lucky Kids Equine is an idea developed through having children and noticing there are plenty of general horse stores, but a limited range of stores specifically tailored to children. I wanted to create a one stop shop for all our little equestrians” this is where LKE was born.
The most potent combination of known nutrients for total joint health for horses & dogs
Wattlelane Stables
All LKE products are designed by Stacey and manufactured by only the best quality manufacturers. Stacey envisions having a full range of kid’s equestrian gear, including but not limited to, boys and girls clothing, a full baby clothing range and mini, pony and horse gear. Products are being released in stages. First release products will consist of horseriding gloves (aged from 1+ year old), boys jodhpurs, a competition range and more. Upon the exciting grand opening of Lucky Kids Equine there will be a two-hour blitz, which consists of a unique code that customers can use during LKE official launch of their website to obtain a discount.
Go to www.luckykidsequine.com.au to subscribe and obtain the code! LKE has also created their own Brumby Initiative Program. here is a lot of discussion T regarding iron supplementation in the horse industry, usually resulting in a lot of confusion! Most commercial products contain additional iron, and there are also “blood building” products containing high levels of iron that promise to treat anaemia or boost athletic performance. On the other hand, many horse owners will have heard that typical horse diets are already very high in iron, or even that too much iron may not be good for their horse.
So what is the answer? Iron is an essential mineral, mostly found in haemoglobin (red blood cells) and myoglobin (muscle cells), both of which have extremely important roles in oxygen transport throughout the body. Iron is also a part of many enzyme systems. However whilst we might be familiar with iron deficiencies in humans, it is extremely uncommon for horses to suffer from iron deficiency. Why is this? It’s estimated that an average horse requires 400mg of iron per day to meet its requirements. Forage often contains 100-250mg per kilogram*. So a horse eating 2 kg of hay may already have consumed enough iron for the day. But of course horses need to eat more than that (see this article), so iron intake can very quickly increase! And some feed stuffs, such as beet pulp, can be over 500mg/kg. To illustrate further, this is the breakdown of iron in my horses’ base diet: It becomes very obvious that just with forage, horses are consuming more than enough iron to meet their needs! It also seems obvious that additional supplementation of iron is simply not necessary. The next question to ask is – is all that excess iron a problem? This is less simple. The maximum amount tolerable amount is thought to be 500mg/kg of feed (so around 5000mg per day for an average horse), so levels such as those in my horse’s diet are not acutely toxic. The issues creep in when you consider how the body deals with excess iron and how iron interacts with other important minerals. Iron is not directly excreted from the body like many other minerals, rather the majority is stored in the liver, with some small losses in sweat and

In recent years, a link has been made between excess iron and insulin resistance in horses, however it is unclear as to whether excess iron causes or exacerbates IR, or whether IR horses have a reduced ability to regulate absorption. Either way, there is no benefit to adding more iron to the diet, so best to play it safe and avoid additional iron. Additionally, high levels of iron suppress the absorption of copper and zinc – both very important trace minerals that are typically lacking in common feeds. Bleached coats and poor quality hooves are a common symptom of this. Correct ratios between these 3 minerals need to be maintained, and to balance the already high iron levels, additional copper and zinc is already required in most diets. The more iron in the diet, the more copper and zinc need to be added –
so why add more iron? ll in all, there simply is no good reason to add iron to A horses’ diets, and a few good ones to avoid or reduce it. Why do so many companies add iron to their products and promote it as beneficial? I don’t know, and it is one of the reasons horse owner’s need to be careful about which supplements they choose. Integral Equine Nutrition’s custom equine supplements do not contain iron (or anything else your horse doesn’t need!). * Some feed companies that include iron in their products will point out that dietary iron absorption from plants is low, around 10-15%. This is true, however the dietary requirements recommended by the National Research Council already take this into account, so it is not a reason to supplement more iron.

BUYING DONKEYS CONTRIBUTED BY THE DONKEY ACADEMY
Donkey ownership is becoming more and more popular in Australia, and what a wonderful thing to be able to say! There a few things that new donkey owners need to look out for when purchasing a donkey. I have met and assisted too many people who have bought donkeys that are not right for them, and all have suffered the consequences. It is no small thing deciding to bring a donkey into your life. There is no greater joy or greater responsibility. A healthy, well-bred, well-cared-for donkey can live up to 30-40 or even 50 years old. This is something to consider as many donkeys on the market are foals. (A donkey under 12 months is still a foal, under two is a yearling, and donkeys are considered mature at eight years old.)
What to expect There are many responsibilities that come with owning a donkey. The farrier must attend to your donkey’s hooves every 8-10 weeks; the same time frame applies for worming; a yearly check-up is recommended by an equine dentist, and the vet must come if illness or injury occurs. Donkeys also need a friend. A lone donkey is a very sad sight; donkeys prefer one of there own above other animals as friends, this is why many breeders will promote or exclusively sell their donkeys in pairs. While another donkey companion is preferable, some can make do with a horse/pony friend, or sometimes even sheep and goats.
Take your time More people want to own donkeys than there are donkeys. You may live in an area where a donkey for sale only pops up in what feels like once in a blue moon. But don’t be afraid to take your time and ‘shop around’. Don’t just buy the first donkey that you see on gumtree because you feel there is nothing else. It is vital that you consider what sort of donkey is right for you whether that be a mature, calm donkey who has been there and done that or a young foal whose life is just beginning.
Quality over Quantity It is vital to get your money’s worth, as donkeys don’t come cheap. I would always recommend inspecting a donkey for sale in person. Sight unseen purchases can be high risk. Any donkey on the market should have a primary education, ask the seller to show you what the donkey can do, and that should be: The minimum standard for a saleable donkey foal is that the animal leads well, ties up, can be groomed, have all four feet picked up, and can be floated. The last one is especially important if the foal must travel a great distance to you. It can be a frightening situation for a young donkey whose first trip in a float is a long one and is then brought to a new place with new people. Floating must be an enjoyable experience; a donkey puts a lot of trust in you for this. If you are purchasing a young donkey, the seller should have the animal well and truly started in all the basics mentioned above (leading, tying, grooming, floating etc.); in other words a saleable product. But if you are buying a young donkey, it is up to the new owner to further and maintain their education. Because even if you are only purchasing a donkey to have as a pet, he needs to have an education for when the farrier/dentist/vet comes and especially when he spends time with you. Having a well-trained donkey isn’t about a display of obedience. It is for the donkey’s health, happiness and well being. * Purchasing wild-caught donkeys, jacks or rescue donkeys is something that should only be undertaken by someone with many years of donkey care, handling and training under their belt. ** This is only a very brief recommendation of some of the things you should consider when purchasing a donkey. If you would like to learn more about the wonderful world of donkeys, please subscribe to the Donkey Academy! The subscription is $50.00 per annum, and this supports the cost of producing bi-weekly Academy emails and video clips. Support, advice and instruction for donkey owners near and far is always given at the Donkey Academy. For more information, please contact Caylin on: caylin.k369@gmail.com Thank you for helping this project continue to grow and prosper - all for the love of donkeys.
