Before commencing any equine body work –know what’s going on with the foot & mouth
Horses, being prey animals, have developed many ways to survive in the wild. One of the most obvious ways that we, as horse owners, should be aware of, is compensation. Horses are truly experts when it comes to compensating. They have to be to stay alive in the wild because if they show weakness, they will be taken by a predator. This tendency of compensation sadly sets them up for more pain and injury living a domestic life under our care. The other reason horse’s compensate, if I may anthropomorphize a bit, is because they want to please us. We need to STOP asking for more. More shows, more ribbons, higher scores, just a bit more work, more time on the lunge...more more more! Stop. Let the horse show you his pain. Pay attention.
Many times there are a long line of insults to the horse’s body that go completely unnoticed by their owners and therefore also by the trimmer and vet. What starts out as maybe some caudal pain in the foot, eventually transfers to strain on the opposite diagonal leg, and later moves up the body to the shoulder, and eventually the stifle. It goes different directions depending on the origin of the original pain and what is being done with the horse. The owner may notice the bad stifle and try to figure out what caused the issue...not even realizing that it actually started with a trim 6 months ago where the farrier took off too much heel. We can’t always connect the dots.
It should never be assumed that foot pain is a minor issue. There is always going to be some level of compensatory damage. Horses give us 200%. Most are so stoic and will give until they fall over and die. When a horse hurts and you ask for more from him, he will figure out a way to move his body in a way that allows him to continue doing as you ask and yet avoid the pain. This continues to lead to more soreness and injuries. More often than not, by the time you actually recognize a lameness issue, the horse has been sore for a very long time.

This cycle of compensation is true not only with foot pain but also mouth pain. Hooks, poor alignment, poor chewing surface contact, TMJ pain, abscesses, gum disease, wolf teeth, all can cause the horse to have pain and will affect his movement. We want a supple mouth, a soft poll, a relaxed neck, a working comfortable back, and an engaged hind end. If the horse hurts in the mouth, none of this is possible. Tension sets in and the cycle begins.
As an equine bodyworker, it is vitally important for you to have an understanding of the internal foot and mouth so that you can address these things first. If you are able to explain to the owner that the toes are way too long, for example, and are causing stress to the laminae...and what that can lead to, that owner will be able to communicate to the farrier why those toes need to be backed up. If you are called out to see a horse that has been suffering with lumbar pain and you ignore the fact that the horse has been balanced poorly and the bony column is obviously off, you try to fix the back issue without even acknowledging the origin of the pain, you are putting a bandaid on the issue without addressing the root cause.
Start with a foundation of nutrition and the health of the foot & mouth and you will be much better set up as a well rounded equine professional that has an excellent understanding of the horse as a complex sentient being who depends on us for everything! I don’t think anyone wants to add to the problem that sadly exists out there today of horse’s greatly suffering, being sold when they can no longer meet the owner’s expectations and ending up moving from one home to another with no relief from the original pain. This is the sad reality. Let’s step up and try to really help these horses. They give so much.

COLIC in horses
Colic in horses is one of the most feared of conditions because of the dramatic way colic can spiral downward into a life-threatening condition. Obstructive colic is the worst and scariest to deal with because there is no way of knowing what the causal factor is.
Most horse owners have experienced at one time or another their beloved horses having colic, and with the autumn months now upon us, your horse will most likely be consuming more dry feed such as hay, which increases the risk of dry bowel and obstructive colic.
Usually when colic is suspected, a vet is called out to give the horse a paraffin drench or an anti-spasmodic. The horse is walked around until he passes manure and commences eating and drinking with good gut noises being heard. Everyone breaths a big sigh of relief and no one is really the wiser as to what caused the problem.
Most colic events are usually from poorly designed diets or management. Overly anxious horses are at risk in certain circumstances because they can stop eating and drinking for significant periods. This creates opportunities for feed to be ingested with minimal fluid, causing compactions of feed as it is too dry to pass through the gut easily.
Greedy horses can do the same as they can gulp down feeds into a nervous and tight gut, with the same outcome of pain and spasm occurring. Horses with a history of digestive upsets are also at risk.
AUTUMN 2024 8 EQUINE NEWS.COM.AU
SYMPTOMS OF COLIC
Most horses display some combination of the following symptoms:
Frequent pawing: Horses with colic often exhibit behaviour that indicates pain or discomfort such as pawing at the ground repeatedly.
Rolling or lying down: Colicky horses may repeatedly roll on the ground or lie down and get up frequently. They may also stretch out on their sides in an attempt to alleviate the pain.
Sweating and increased heart rate: Horses experiencing colic often sweat excessively, even when the weather is not warm. They may also exhibit an elevated heart rate, which can be felt by placing your hand on their chest.
Restlessness and agitation: Colicky horses may show signs of restlessness, such as constantly moving around their stall or paddock, kicking at their belly, or looking at their sides.
Loss of appetite: A decreased, or complete loss of appetite, is a common symptom of colic in horses. They may show disinterest in their usual feed or hay.
Absence or decreased passing of manure: A horse with colic may exhibit reduced or no passage of manure. They may strain to defecate or pass only small amounts of dry faeces.
Distended abdomen: In some cases, colicky horses may have a visibly distended or bloated abdomen. However, this symptom may not always be present, especially in mild cases.
Less common causes of colic can include enteroliths (a large calcium/ mineral stone caused by excessive consumptions of minerals) tumours, or foreign items that have inadvertently ended up in the horses gut. Worm damage, particularly from bots, is another cause.
A twisted bowel, or telescopic bowel, often can end the life of a horse as it is very difficult to correct these problems once the situation has turned from bad to worse.
It’s important to note that these signs of colic can vary depending on the severity and underlying cause of colic. If you suspect your horse may have colic, it is crucial to contact a veterinarian immediately for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.
PREVENTION
A well designed natural, whole food diet, with natural foraging is the best to help prevent Colic in your horse. Herbal support is advised for horses that are prone to general digestive upsets and/or are anxious (particularly chamomile – a natural anti spasmodic and aids a comfortable peristalsis). It is important to make sure hay is both palatable and able to be chewed well - checking your horse’s teeth helps in this processing.
Magnesium is a good supplement to give your horse regularly. McDowells Mag-A-GG contains a combination of Magnesium oxide, brewer’s yeast, chamomile, and dandelion specially formulated to assist in muscle relaxation and nervousness.
Keeping your horse’s gut filled with appropriate roughage and water is essential. Fasting can be very dangerous in some situations, and a horse should never be without food or water for more than 12 hours.
Our Equigesta-Pre also can be beneficial as it stimulates the growth and activity of good bacteria and promotes beneficial intestinal microorganisms. It can also assist in the normal healthy recovery of damaged stomach lining.
EQUINE NEWS.COM.AU 9
Competition and travel stress creates a high risk of colic in horses - so measures must be taken to ensure that your horse’s diet during travel and water intake is kept up. Again, chamomile and nervous system herbs are ideal, as well as the Bach flower rescue remedy is very useful. Our Perform-A-Calm is formulated with herbs that have traditionally been used to nourish and calm the nervous disposition of horses that seem to be overly anxious in their home or when introduced to new stimulus.
McDOWELLS COLIC RECOVERY PROGRAM
About the Author –
Catherine McDowell –Medicine of Mother Nature…
I was first introduced to the concept of Herbal Lore when I was very young. I think one of the earliest influences I can remember was from my grandparents, who were very traditional Bathurst farmers of the well known Cox family. My grandfather had the “people’s home library” which was a compendium of all kinds of home cures.
Herbal Medicine is, at its core, studying nature and the humanities. It’s about observing our diet, our environment and how we respond.
Apart from the aforementioned products, McDowells has formulated a specific program for Colic in horses whilst waiting for veterinarian consultation and diagnosis. The mix of herbs in our Colic Recovery are used to ease spasms in the digestive system and soothe the intestinal lining. The program also consists of chamomile to aid recovery of colic, assist with the nervous system and act as an antispasmodic.
Whilst we can’t protect our horses from unforeseen reasons for colic, or eliminate the need for a vet, we can do our best to keep our horse’s digestive systems and nervous systems healthy with a whole food, natural diet, and good management practices, to aid in minimising the risk of possible colic.

Keeping a balance is difficult in the modern era as we are no longer interacting with our environment in the same way as we may have done even as little as a 100 years ago.
As a Dorothy Hall graduate working along side the well known Robert McDowell for many years and furthering my education with Dennis Stewart, I have developed my own unique application of herbal remedies. Working primarily with animals (Horses and Dogs) has been the most rewarding.
Having seen herbs work so well in so many cases has proven to me time and again the under-utilised power of herbal medicine. It is heartening to see now Vets, and some Medical Doctors seeing the traditional application of herbs as useful.

EQUINE BALANCE & THE CORONARY BAND
Not only is the coronary band essential to the health of the hoof – It’s hugely significant for the health of the horse’s entire body.
Here’s an interesting fact: In Chinese Medicine, there are specific acupressure points along the coronary band and between the heel bulbs that can nourish and balance the energy and internal organs’ capacity to function optimally. When stimulating these particular acupressure points, also called “acupoints,” you are supporting the horse’s overall health.
Jing-Well Points
The acupoints located along the coronary band are called the “JingWell Points.” Jing is pronounced with a soft vibrational “J” sound. What makes these points so special is that the chi, life-promoting energy, is said to “bubble up” to the surface, thus making chi energy highly available to be stimulated. It’s exactly at these acupoints where all of the major energy channels which connect with the internal organs begin, end and connect with each other, giving them super power.
There are Chinese medicine practitioners who use only the Jing-Well points to balance the entire body. Think of a light bulb; by connecting two opposite charges, positive and negative, the bulb receives the energy it needs to light up. It’s the same with the energy in the horse’s body. By connecting the yin and yang chi along the coronary band, you are stimulating the energy the horse needs to nourish and balance his body.
Acupoint Stimulating Technique
By Amy Snow & Nancy Zidonis, Tallgrass Animal Acupressure
Resources
This is how you can consistently support your horse’s health. To stimulate the Jing-Well points, use the soft tip of your thumb and press down gently, yet with intent, all around the coronary band as well as in the back between the heel bulbs. When moving from one point to another, it feels good to slide into the area from just above the actual point.
Follow the photo-charts. Stay on each acupoint for a slow count to 12 and then move on to the next Jing-Well point. It doesn’t matter which leg on which you begin. What matters is making three rotations pressing along the coronary band on all four legs.
As you can see in the photographs, with each Jing-Well point, there’s an abbreviation and number associated with it. The abbreviations indicate which internal organ system the acupoint is stimulating and balancing. The number indicates which point it is located on the channel. For instance, when you are pressing Heart 9 (Ht 9) you are enhancing the flow of energy to the heart channel, thus clearing and balancing the heart channel. By circling the coronary band, you are effectively creating the harmonious flow of chi and other vital substances throughout the horse’s body.

WET WEATHER AILMENTS
Dr Jennifer Stewart BVSc BSc PhD Equine Veterinarian and Consultant Nutritionist
With a lot of rain comes a lot of mud and in some places floods. As horse owners we need to be aware of some problems that arise when you have too much rain in a short period of time. Between, during and after the relentless, seemingly endless onslaughts of rain, many horse owners are counting their losses and celebrating tales of survival.
Lots of rain = lots of health hazards. Flooded paddocks, horses cut-off from each other or trapped in flood waters, loss of shelter, drinking water contaminated, fences down and tangled wire, lots of biting insects, skin conditions, no grass or lots of green grass and wet ground. When these collide and combine it creates huge demands and stresses for our horses and for us. Let’s take a look at some of the hazards and ways to help relieve them.
The health hazards during wet times are multiple
Table 1. Common horse health hazards in wet weather
biting insects
contaminated drinking water
eating mouldy food.
eye injuries
foot problems
hoof issues
infections
laminitis
mudfever
parasites and worms
pneumonia

wounds and injuries (especially to the legs)
AUTUMN 2024 16 EQUINE NEWS.COM.AU
Biting insects: Biting insects flies and ticks all breed madly in wet weather and can be a real nuisance to us and our horses! Causing skin irritation, sleeplessness and weight loss – and they can also carry viruses, infect wounds with worm larvae and cause allergies such as ‘sweet itch’, ‘summer itch’ and ‘Queensland itch’. Many midges like to feed on the neck and tail area, so the itchy horse rubs his neck and tail against fences and trees. Others feed on the chest or belly skin, causing ventral midline dermatitis - a crusty itchy lesion underneath the belly. If cattle have grazed in your horse paddock, then larval cattle ticks can also be a cause of acute dermatitis – especially around the horse’s face and lower legs. Although these larvae are so small we can’t see them, they are extremely irritating to horses and can lead to severe, self-inflicted skin damage and bacterial infections as horse’s chew their skin to try and relieve the pain and itch.
Biting flies can carry Habronema larvae from the horse’s manure, via the maggot to the adult fly which then allows the irritable larvae to enter the wound while the fly feeds from the raw surface.
The resulting sores (Summer Sores) can be enormous and frequently confused with Swamp Cancers (a distressing fungal growth caused by a soil organism called Pythium). Pythiosis can cause rapidly growing, itchy, foul, oozing sores anywhere on the horse’s body. Although there are surgical and antibiotic options, if you have them seen promptly (within 2 weeks of infection) by your vet, immunotherapy via a vaccine can be really effective.
There are many ways to keep insects at bay and your vet is the best person to advise on treatments for the skin. Insecticides, kill the insects after they’ve bitten your horse. Repellents however, discourage the insect from landing on your horse in the first place. Keeping horses rugged all over, screening with fine-mesh netting, using fans to blow insects away (horses quickly learn to turn towards the fan for relief) and keeping horses indoors between dusk and dawn when insects are most active can all help prevent insect attack. Smoke from small smudge fires in drums next to horse stables or shelters will repel most biting insects – although this may not be a good idea if you have neighbours close by. There are also vaccines available for some of the nastier infections.
Adding a small amount of bleach to water troughs can assist in reducing mosquito and other insect breeding habitats. Always read labels on products and check with your vet about tick treatments – some cattle treatments can kill horses and products containing amitraz are lethal to horses. Long-acting pyrethrins can be sprayed or sponged onto your horses – but again, discuss the products with your vets. By watching out for insect injuries and taking action at the first signs of trouble, chances are good that they will be cured without delay and your horse will be healthy and comfortable even when rain is persistent.
Skin problems: Rainrot or rainscald produces distinctive gray/white scabs with tufts of matted hair on top and yellow-green pus underneath. Rainrot can be passed via contact and flies from horse to horse, and to people as well. Horses sharing paddocks with sheep or cattle often have a higher risk of rain scald and greasy heel, and horses with white socks are particularly susceptible as sunlight sensitivity of non-pigmented skin worsens the reaction.

The first priority for treatment is to dry the hair and skin if the weather permits! Benzoyl peroxide (used for human acne) and chlorhexidine are often used for treatment as staphylococcus (‘Staphs’) are commonly involved. For stubborn heel infections, coconut oil, Vaseline and zinc oxide can help with the removal of the scabs and help repel moisture. Call your vet if the skin hasn’t cleared up within a week as the infection may become ‘mixed’, progressing to cellulitis and stronger medication may be necessary.
Hooves and feet: Horse hooves absorb water quickly and soft soles are vulnerable to bruising and penetrating injuries. These wounds have the potential to be fatal if the coffin joint, navicular bursa or tendon sheath become infected. The best outcome requires early treatment. Ensuring paddocks and yards are free of fencing wire off-cuts, broken bottles, scrap tin, roofing nails etc is the best preparation for wet times. Under wet conditions, horses will pull their shoes, but often not completely and toe clips and nails become potential foreign bodies that can penetrate the sole. Removing shoes, regular checking of your horse’s feet and prompt vet and farrier attention for anything abnormal is good management and prevention during wet conditions.
Water-proof leg protection
Thrush, hoof cracks, white line disease and hoof abscesses are especially prevalent during wet weather. If possible, create a space that is clean and dry for horses to retreat to. Be aware of the signs of hoof problems, such as a strong unpleasant smell, discharge or acute lameness and seek immediate inspection by your vet or farrier if you sense something is not right. For all wounds, it’s worth checking in with your local veterinarian for their advice on the different dressings and bandaging techniques they recommend for the different types of wounds and injuries. Zinc and castor oil mixtures can help protect the skin and promote healing.
‘Stocking-up’ – where fluid accumulates in two or all four lower legs overnight and goes away once your horse starts moving. Swelling in horses’ lower legs is pretty common and happens usually if horses move less than normal. The swellings are usually about the same size in all affected legs, may extend the length of the cannon bone and are cool, nonpainful and the horse absolutely fine otherwise.
AUTUMN 2024 18 EQUINE NEWS.COM.AU
Pastern dermatitis/greasy heel
To determine if the swelling is “stocking up,” apply pressure with your fingers over a swollen area to produce pits in the skin (hence the term ‘pitting oedema’). It shouldn’t cause pain and the pits will slowly refill over 30 to 60 seconds. If inactivity is the cause, the filling should resolve completely after 10-15 minutes of gentle exercise. Compression or stable bandages can help minimise fluid accumulation. But only go for that solution if you’re sure there isn’t another cause for your horse’s swollen leg(s) - otherwise you’re fighting a symptom.
Swelling in one leg: Swelling is one of the most basic symptoms of inflammation, along with heat and pain. Common causes of swelling in one leg include injuries and infections. Sudden filling in a single leg could be a symptom of cellulitis, an allergy or a venomous bite and needs to be investigated and treated promptly.
Skin swellings: In wet environments the skin of horses is unavoidably and continuously exposed to moisture. Organisms normally found on the skin can invade the weakened barrier and establish an infection – fungi and mites can add to the party! Mild infections (pastern dermatitis, ‘scratches’, greasy heel or mud fever) can spread into the deeper layers and lead to cellulitis or lymphangitis. Muddy conditions aren’t always necessary - wounds or grazes can also allow the bacteria to penetrate and lots of work in certain sandy arenas and schools can be quite traumatic to the skin. Pastures containing rough plants or spiky weeds can cause trauma to the skin and excessive leg washing weakens skin. Some beddings can act as an irritant both physically (straw) or chemically (high ammonia from urine in deep litter) and incorrectly placed boots and bandages also cause damage to the vital skin barrier.
Lymphangitis presents with varying amounts of swelling, from foot to fetlock level or as a ‘fat-leg’ extending to far above the hock or knee. It is acutely painful and horses may be subdued, distressed, off their food, have colic signs, sweat and a fever – other horses may appear fine. In very severe cases or those left untreated, the pressure build-up within the lymphatic vessels can lead to leakage of serum (straw-brown coloured fluid) from the skin which appears as crusting and oozing areas (ulcerative lymphangitis). Treatment of lymphangitis is always necessary and must be started quickly and continued until the condition resolves.
Wet conditions can be particularly hard on hooves.
Wet/dry cycles
Pastern dermatitis is more common on white legs with pink skin. In severe cases the whole lower leg can swell up and become very painful and hot. All participants (bacteria, fungi, mites) must be treated and are much easier to treat if recognized early! Check the lower legs carefully for any signs of the condition, as early treatment will hopefully deliver a speedier resolution. Leaving treatment too late can mean weeks of work in getting the upper hand. If the condition is not responding to treatment within a few days, or it continues to spread or is painful to the horse, then contact your vet. Calling a vet in more serious cases not only gives you the best chance of getting on top of the problem, but they come armed with sedatives.
Hooves adapt well to conditions that are consistently dry or consistently damp. When conditions fluctuate between wet and dry, the hooves are stressed. Like a sponge, the hoof wall absorbs moisture quickly - and dries out quickly. When your horse’s hooves are repeatedly cycling between wet and dry, chronic dryness is exacerbated. Summer thunderstorms and rain and moist, dew-soaked pasture during the night allow the hooves to soften and swell. This cycle can cause nails to loosen as their holes in the wall enlarge, and you’ve got a horse that can’t keep shoes on. Discuss with your farrier or veterinarian the different hoof dressing options to reduce the effects of the wet/dry cycle – they will have lots of experience in your local area conditions.

Cellulitis and lymphangitis: Leg swelling caused by cellulitis or lymphangitis can follow a break in the skin’s protective barrier that allows bacteria to enter the body and infect deeper layers. If the infection progresses to involve the lymphatic system, it becomes lymphangitis. These are both very serious and potentially lifethreatening diseases that need to be addressed as soon as possible. Although commonly due to cuts and puncture wounds, cellulitis or lymphangitis can also follow spider or insect bites and some cases are linked to specific diseases eg purpura haemorrhagica which can be complication of strangles. But most of the time, the actual cause of a specific case of lymphangitis is difficult to determine. This is because by the time we recognize there’s a problem, the leg has already swollen two to three times its normal size, which makes finding wounds virtually impossible.

Oils and Omega fatty acids Oils and fatty acids have an important role in hoof structure and integrity. Together, oils and phosphorus form phospholipid compounds that both repel and attract water to help maintain correct moisture balance in the face of changing seasonal conditions. Both of these are essential when combating both wet and dry conditions in a typical Australian climate, to build healthy, resilient hooves that are less likely to become damaged or cracked. Alongside fresh grass, linseed meal is an excellent source of Omega 3 fatty acids and provides good levels of phospholipids, which is particularly beneficial if your horse has restricted access to fresh grass. Horses with access to pasture usually get enough essential fatty acids - including omegas 3, 6 and 9 - in their diet if they are not in work. Older horses and those with arthritis, skin and hoof problems often benefit from supplementation with flaxseed or flax, canola or other oils rich in omega 3 fatty acids.
Infections: Ross River, Kunjin viruses and melioidosis are some of the more serious challenges – especially in tropical and subtropical regions, including northern Australia. Melioidosis is most likely to occur following heavy rainfall and affects many animals, including horses and humans. Signs of infection include depression, weight loss, lameness, swollen joints, mild colic, diarrhoea, coughing, nasal discharge and fever. Importantly these signs also occur with Hendra virus and any horse with a feverespecially in Queensland and northern NSW has the potential to be a horse infected with the deadly Hendra Virus if not vaccinated.
Finally, if you have a horse or livestock caught in floodwater, call the SES, state agriculture department or local veterinarian.
Specialised equipment is often required to rescue them. Keep safe.

Walking with horses
One of my all-time favourite things to do with horses is hand walking. The benefits of this are enormous and it is enjoyable too. Benefits include deepening connection, building trust, increasing confidence both in each other and yourselves, improving bravery, openness to new experiences, increased safety riding out, car training, improving separation anxiety and sharing new experiences. When we walk a horse out things can be new and potentially scary. The horse comes to see you, the leader, as the safe place, increasing trust in you. Walking beside the horse, we have eye contact, promoting connection and communication. The two of you go places together and have moments, beautiful, challenging, relaxing, stressful, fun, building a deep relationship. We also see how they manage things, or don’t, and work out the best ways to support them. It’s best to know what your horse will react to and how, while safe on the ground. This information means less surprises when we ride out, so we can relax and trust them more. I find these benefits strongest when I walk a horse out alone and away from familiar turf. When exposed to unfamiliar places with full support from their person, a horses’ self-confidence increases. Every time they experience something new and scary, and survive, they get a little braver. Some take longer than others, but most start to feel braver and have reduced fear responses after walking out fairly quickly. It also gives the horse a chance to develop acceptance of cars if this is a skill they lack, with you safely on the ground while they are learning.
I do not allow horses to eat whenever they want. If it turns into a grazing session the horse will be focused on finding the next piece of delicious grass and will be less focused on their surroundings, with less intake and processing of new information. I allow the horse to eat at some point though, often just before returning home, by using downward pressure on the halter and telling them to eat. This then becomes a reward for venturing so far and promotes a desire to repeat the exercise.
When we turn to go home, some horses will rush. Hand walking is a fantastic opportunity to work on this safely too. Practicing half halts on the lead shows you just how much and how often they are needed, plus trains your horse to respond to them. All this transfers to riding. You will find after a while the rushing home reduces hugely, until it is almost gone.
For horses with separation anxiety hand walking is a safer way to work on this than riding. One trick is to walk the horse away until just before they show stress (or the horse that remains home shows stress, sometimes they are the problem, not the horse you are leading), then return home. Keep repeating this, it doesn’t matter how many times. Each time the horse usually goes a little further before the stress starts. This is not a one session fix; separation anxiety is very real for horses as the herd instinct is strong. It may take a while but with doing this consistently over time it can improve. The message to the horses is they will not be separated forever, they will be reunited, they need to know this. Separation anxiety is strongest when there are only two horses, where the entire need for a herd is invested in just one other. Going out into the world with your horse, side by side, has so many benefits for both of you. I did this for months before riding one very green horse out. When we did ride out his confidence was so high, we could go anywhere, just the two of us. If you have not tried this, I can’t recommend it more highly. And remember, this is meant to be enjoyable time with your horse, so relax and show them how much fun it can be.

S LE CONTROL TH SOLES IN HO ES
Unravelling the Woes and Tackling the Toes
Horses are majestic creatures known for their strength, agility, and grace – not to mention the partnerships we create with them. Central to their ability to move and perform is the health of their hooves. Among the many hoof-related concerns that horse owners and caretakers face, thin soles stand out as a particularly significant issue. In this article, we’ll delve into what thin soles are, the reasons they can occur, and how best to manage this condition for the well-being of our equine companions.
Understanding Thin Soles:
The sole of a horse’s hoof is a crucial structure that provides support, protection, and shock absorption. When the sole becomes thin, it compromises these functions, leaving the horse vulnerable to discomfort, injury, and reduced performance. Thin soles are characterised by a lack of thickness in the protective layer of the hoof, making the underlying sensitive structures more susceptible to damage.
Causes of Thin Soles:
1. Genetics: While some horses may inherit thin soles from their parents, predisposing them to this condition, the role of genetics in hoof health is complex and not yet fully understood. However, it’s essential to consider the genetic background of horses when assessing their susceptibility to thin soles.
2. L ack of Proper Hoof Care: Inadequate trimming and shoeing practices can contribute significantly to thinning of the sole over time. Regular hoof maintenance by a skilled hoof care professional is essential to ensure proper hoof balance, support, and protection against thinning. Your hoof care professional should recognise the external signs of a thin or thinning sole.
3. Nutritional Deficiencies: A horse’s diet plays a crucial role in maintaining hoof health. Nutritional deficiencies, particularly in essential nutrients such as biotin, zinc, and copper, can lead to weakened hoof structures, including thin soles. Ensuring a balanced diet with appropriate supplementation can help prevent and address this issue.
4. Environmental Factors: The environment in which a horse lives and works can impact hoof health. Harsh environmental conditions, such as overly wet or dry footing, can contribute to sole thinning. Proper environmental management, including ensuring suitable turnout conditions and footing, is essential to minimise stress on the hooves.
5. Conformational Issues: Certain conformational abnormalities or imbalances in the horse’s limbs can exert uneven pressure on the hooves, leading to thin soles. Addressing underlying conformational issues through corrective trimming, shoeing packages with support or physical therapy may help alleviate stress on the hooves and prevent further thinning.
6. Laminitis: A big contributor to thin soles – laminitis may be sub-clinical meaning the usual outward symptoms horse owners would not be aware of. Your hoof care practitioner or veterinarian may pick up on this however the horse would not be outwardly “laminitic” which is usually when laminitis has been bubbling away unnoticed until it becomes an emergency. Laminitis can be brought on by several factors – which is outside the scope of this article.

How Laminitis Contributes to Thin Soles
Laminitis, a debilitating and often painful condition affecting the hoof tissues, can significantly contribute to the development of thin soles in horses. Understanding the relationship between laminitis and thin soles is crucial for effectively managing both conditions and mitigating their impact on equine health.
Disruption of Hoof Structure: Laminitis is characterised by inflammation and damage to the sensitive laminae within the hoof, which connect the coffin bone (pedal bone, third phalanx) to the hoof wall. As laminitis progresses, the weakened laminae can lead to structural instability within the hoof capsule, compromising its ability to support the horse’s weight effectively.
Reduced Blood Flow and Nutrient Delivery: During a laminitic episode, the inflammatory response can impede blood flow to the sensitive structures of the hoof, including the sole. This diminished circulation deprives the hoof tissues of essential nutrients and oxygen necessary for maintaining healthy growth and integrity. As a result, the sole may become weakened and thin over time due to inadequate nutrient delivery and compression of vital blood vessels within the hoof.
Mechanical Stress on the Sole: Laminitis often causes changes in the horse’s stance and gait as they attempt to alleviate pain and discomfort. These altered weight-bearing patterns can exert excessive pressure on specific areas of the sole, leading to localised thinning, sole bruising or abscess formation. Prolonged mechanical stress exacerbates sole thinning and compromises its ability to provide adequate protection and support for the underlying structures of the hoof.
Secondary Effects of Chronic Laminitis: Chronic or recurrent laminitis can further exacerbate sole thinning through ongoing damage to the hoof’s internal structures. Persistent inflammation and instability within the hoof capsule perpetuate the cycle of tissue degeneration, hindering the natural mechanisms of sole regeneration and repair.
Management Considerations: Addressing laminitis promptly and implementing appropriate management strategies are essential for minimising its impact on sole health. This includes working closely with a veterinarian and qualified hoof care professional to develop a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to the individual horse’s needs. Management strategies may include therapeutic trimming and shoeing techniques to relieve pressure on compromised areas of the sole, as well as dietary modifications and supportive care to promote hoof regeneration and overall hoof health.
In conclusion, laminitis can have profound implications for hoof health, including contributing to the development of thin soles in horses. By understanding the mechanisms by which laminitis affects the hoof and implementing proactive management strategies, horse owners can help mitigate the risk of sole thinning and support the long-term well-being of their equine companions.
Signs and Symptoms:
Recognising the signs of thin soles is crucial for early intervention and management. Common indicators include:
• Tenderness or sensitivity in the hoof area
• Increased susceptibility to bruising or injury
• Reluctance to walk or exercise on hard surfaces
• Lameness or gait irregularities, especially on rough terrain
• Horses moving slower than usual, seeming sluggish
• Depth of collateral grooves at the Apex of the frog
If you notice any of these signs in your horse, it’s essential to consult with a veterinarian or qualified hoof care professional for a thorough evaluation and appropriate management plan.
Management and care:
Managing thin soles requires a comprehensive approach aimed at promoting hoof health and providing adequate support:
1. Consultation with a Veterinarian: If you suspect your horse has thin soles or are experiencing any hoof-related issues, seek guidance from a veterinarian with your hoof care professional present. A comprehensive evaluation including radiographs will help determine the underlying cause of the problem and develop a tailored plan to address your horse’s specific needs.
2. Regular Hoof Care: Schedule regular hoof trimming and shoeing appointments with a knowledgeable qualified hoof care professional to maintain proper hoof balance and support. Customised hoof support options, such as hoof boots with pads, hoof casts with support putty and thrush prevention product or specialised glue on or shoeing packages may be beneficial for horses with thin soles.

Thin sole. Note the lack of depth in collateral grooves at apex of frog. (point of frog) As Hoof Care Practitioners, its essential that we evaluate all external factors prior to trimming a hoof. This Horse presents with several concerning issues but note the lack of depth in collateral grooves at the Apex of the frog, alerting the practitioner to be extremely mindful to not remove any further sole. Note also the imbalance of the hoof by assessing the heel, bars and assymetry of the depth of collateral grooves.
3. Nutritional Supplements: Ensure your horse receives a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients for optimal hoof health. Supplements containing biotin, omega-3 fatty acids, and minerals like zinc and copper can support hoof growth and strength, providing vital nutrients to improved hoof growth. A full diet consultation (including hay and pasture analysis) may be necessary with a qualified equine nutritionist who understands laminitis rehabilitation.
4. Protective Measures: Consider using hoof boots or pads to provide additional support and protection for thin-soled horses, especially during exercise or on abrasive surfaces. These protective measures can help reduce discomfort and minimise the risk of injury while allowing the hooves to grow, heal and strengthen without further abrasion to the already sensitive soles.
5. Environmental Management: Manage your horse’s environment to minimise stress on the hooves. Provide adequate turnout with appropriate footing and shelter and avoid prolonged exposure to extreme weather conditions that can compromise hoof health.

Thin Sole Radiograph Without Markers. This radiograph belongs to the hoof shown above. There are pathologies within this hoof - however as hoof care practitioners, we need to be mindful of external indicators before removing any additional support to the hoof whilst still trying to improve comfort by removing leverage.
Retracted Sole - a tell tale sign that your horse is in trouble. Often mistaken for a sole callous (hardened tough sole), it definitely is not. Note again the lack of depth of collateral grooves at the Apex of frog.
This horse needs to be in boots with pads with topical thrush products in place to avoid moisture retention in the frog.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, thin soles in horses can pose significant challenges for horse owners and caretakers, impacting the health, comfort, and performance of our equine companions. By understanding the causes of thin soles and implementing proactive management strategies, we can help support hoof health, alleviate discomfort, and promote overall well-being in our horses. Remember, diligent hoof care, proper nutrition, environmental considerations, and expert guidance are key to managing thin soles effectively and ensuring our horses lead happy, healthy lives.
