CASE STUDY: TITAN By
Titan is a 27 year old AQH gelding, 15.1 hands, and even at his age he has a rich, lustrous, chestnut winter coat. In his younger days he was a full-bodied, powerful horse and his family’s star barrel racer. Both teenage daughters enjoyed the sport and Titan was just as eager to run and win as they were. He had the energy and spirit of a Titan, which is how he got his name.
At 27, Titan’s eye is still bright, yet he has slowed considerably. His muscle tone has obviously become more flaccid with age. His spine is more visible along his topline. Titan’s gait appears to be shorter than in the past and he often trips. His foreleg and hind leg joints periodically swell after any exercise. He is willing to head out for a trail ride, but he is less willing to trot or canter. Now Titan is more content to be turned out with his mates on the family’s ranch.

Session Plan & Acupoint Selection for A Cold, Age-Related Arthritis Condition
Given Titan’s clinical signs of arthritis and other aging issues, the acupressure practitioner is able to determine a Session Plan and select acupressure points, also called “acupoints,” to help manage and support is overall health. His condition is considered “cold” because his body is not receiving enough warming chi energy and nourishing vital substances. As Titan ages, his metabolism has slowed, which has led to arthritic joints and lack of adequate nutrient-rich, warming blood circulating throughout his body. The intent in developing an acupressure session for Titan is to relieve pain associated with his arthritic joints, minimize the edema surrounding his joints, plus nourish and enhance blood circulation to his bones, muscles, and internal organs. This is a lot to address at one time, but we have to start here and see how Titan responds to the acupoints selected. In subsequent sessions there’s the opportunity to “fine-tune” the acupoint selection as need be to improve Titan’s level of comfort as much as possible.

A hoof abscess can cause a horse owner panic when the horse is suddenly suffering from severe lameness with no visible injury. A hoof abscess is pus in the hoof that can be dealt with quickly and cleanly, however complications can develop...
Hoof abscesses can occur when bacteria gets caught between the laminae and the hoof wall or sole. The bacteria create pus (or exudate), which builds up and creates pressure behind the hoof wall or sole (1) .
A hoof abscess is much more painful right before rupture, as the pressure builds up. Once the abscess has burst, the pressure is relieved and often they are immediately more comfortable.
AUTUMN 2022 8 EQUINE NEWS.COM.AU
A freshly trimmed hoof exposing the burst abscess also revealing numerous pockets of seedy toe travelling up the white line and thrush in the collateral grooves and heel crevice
An abscess is just an indication of a deeper issue which needs to be resolved, otherwise this can become a recurrent problem. For example, horses with Equine Metabolic Syndrome and laminitis are more susceptible to abscesses. If they have experienced wall separation to extreme pedal bone rotation, they can then develop an abscess (anything from a few days to several weeks after the initial laminitis).
Robust immune systems routinely eliminate infective and metabolic waste as part of a healthy system. A system that is overloaded with inflammation, infection or metabolic waste has a much harder time recovering. There are many traditional treatments used throughout the ages to assist the body expel toxins.
Some abscesses may spread further into the hoof, such as the coffin bone, the navicular, or into the lower leg (2). This is particularly true with chronic abscesses that are left untreated or cleaned. If these structures become infected, the treatment can be much longer, expensive, and could result in something more permanent.
After the abscess has burst, the focus should be on growing out a healthy hoof. The damage from an abscess can take six to twelve months to grow out, and in this time, there is a weakened hoof structure. Good nutrition, herbs and feeding millet and linseed (as found in our formula Tendon and Bone) can ensure that all regrowth is healthy and strong.
What causes a hoof abscess?
– Conditions cycling between dry and wet
– Incorrect shoeing/trimming
– Internal, systemic infections
– Management of the horsestanding in mud or unclean stalls
– Insulin resistance case or laminitis, leading to hoof damage
Signs your horse may have an abscess
– Mild to severe lameness
– Digital pulse (in the affected leg)
– Swelling in the lower limb
– Pressure on the coronet band causes pain response
Poulticing or soaking?
A poultice or soaking can help if the hoof is very dry. Soaking boots are helpful. but if you dont have a boot you can use a bucket instead (preferably a soft flexible rubber one that wont crack!).
A poultice consists of herbs and other ingredients made into a paste and placed directly on the skin. This allows the ingredients to transfer their benefits and also draw out any toxins, depending on the ingredients.
Apple Cider Vinegar is also used for soaking due to its antimicrobial properties (one part vinegar to ten parts warm water).
EQUINE NEWS.COM.AU 9
You could also add Manuka honey to the soaking or the poultice. The antibacterial properties of honey also sterilise the wound, cleaning and preventing infection reducing healing time and complications that might increase scaring. Due to its antibacterial properties, there is a reduction in the need to take oral antibiotics for wounds as wound infection is prevented. The key to clearing abscesses lies in breaking down the capsule wall.
The herb Red Clover, which, besides being a blood cleanser in its own right, encourages the body to bring the infection to the outside therefore encouraging the abscess to burst out. It is traditionally used to thin the cyst walls so they can leak and discharge the stored toxins back into the bloodstream.
Blood cleansing herbs are also used and can be taken for clearing abscesses waste from the blood. Rosehips and dandelion tea are especially good for this.

McDowells products
We recommend our Hoof Abscess Program that contains the following products that work together to eliminate metabolic waste, reduce pain from inflammation and support in the healing process. It contains Alleviate and Infect-A-Clear and our external oil, Hoof Heel, aiding circulation to all tissue and bone. This reduces inflammation and pain as well as aids better hoof growth.
McDowells Alleviate
These herbs have been traditionally used to reduce pain from inflammation and support in the healing process. This formulation may be used safely for both emergencies and in the long term for comfort.
McDowells Infect-A-Clear
The herbs in this mix have been traditionally used to stimulate the horse’s own natural elimination which may help to clear these naturally occurring metabolites thereby improving the immune system’s response. A 12-week course is advised which is a full blood cycle. The tonic will need to be given continuously for a minimum of 3 weeks and can be maintained long term if necessary.
McDowells Hoof Heel
This oil-based treatment is a mixture of herbal oils and extracts which warm and bring circulation to all tissue and bone in the area. It assists with healing both bones and ligament attachments and any other damage, while improving circulation dramatically and reducing inflammation. Also assists to ease pain associated with Founder, Pedal Osteitis, Navicular Disease and Sesamoiditis.
McDowells Tendon and Bone
$130 each
Tendon and Bone is used to promote the re-growth of attachment points and the re-tensioning of stretched or damaged ligaments. Elecampane is a stimulant to fibroblast (the most common cells of connective tissue in animals) and osteoblast (single nucleus that synthesize bone) activity due to its allantoin content. Millet contains especially high levels of organic silica compounds as well as carbohydrate and many other minerals. It also contains high levels of magnesium and higher in protein than most other grains. Linseed is specific nourishment for strength and elasticity of ligaments and attachment points and is a whole feed source of Omega 3 and 6 and Linoleic acids.
Other products that may be useful are:
Colloidal Silver
Colloidal silver can be used to wash and clean the abscess prior to dressing. Colloidal Silver was used and proven to be effective against hundreds of disease-causing bacterium by the 1940s. Its action as a broad spectrum antibiotic has never been matched by the modern pharmaceuticals in that it produces no drug resistance whatsoever.
Manuka Honey
High in minerals, antioxidants and bioflavonoids this potent antibacterial honey will help to enhance and protect your body’s own defences. This active honey helps to heal and reduce the scarring of wounds. Numerous studies show Manuka honey in particular is good at healing wounds with reduced scarring. Honey keeps the wound moist and supple, helping to reduce scaring. The high sugar content in honey draws moisture from the wound, preventing bacteria growth and encouraging wound healing by drawing out wound toxicants.
The Easyboot Sneaker is designed to give the hoof maximum flexibility. A great hoof boot for pleasure riders, turn out, and therapy uses.

Medicine of Mother Nature…
I was first introduced to the concept of Herbal Lore when I was very young. I think one of the earliest influences I can remember was from my grandparents, who were very traditional Bathurst farmers of the well known Cox family. My grandfather had the “people’s home library” which was a compendium of all kinds of home cures.
Herbal Medicine is, at its core, studying nature and the humanities. It’s about observing our diet, our environment and how we respond. Keeping a balance is difficult in the modern era as we are no longer interacting with our environment in the same way as we may have done even as little as a 100 years ago.
As a Dorothy Hall graduate working along side the well known Robert McDowell for many years and furthering my education with Dennis Stewart, I have developed my own unique application of herbal remedies.
Working primarily with animals (Horses and Dogs) has been the most rewarding.
Having seen herbs work so well in so many cases has proven to me time and again the under-utilised power of herbal medicine. It is heartening to see now Vets, and some Medical Doctors seeing the traditional application of herbs as useful.
My comprehensive service includes free animal consultations 24/7 via my web site, and face to face consultation at 62 Corporation Avenue, Bathurst NSW 2795.

A GUIDE TO EQUINE WORMING
Dr Bruno D Ros BVetBio BVSc
One of the most common questions that arises with horse owners is worming of their horse, and rightly so, as it’s an important basic facet of horse husbandry.
However, misinformation and glossy marketing from several big pharmaceutical companies have contributed to poor use of our deworming drugs to the point there is now widespread drug resistance, and this will be devastating for our horses when we’re unable to treat basic conditions like intestinal worms. Hopefully in the next few paragraphs we can clear up some mistruths and set a path forward for more prudent use of these important drugs.
1 ALL horses live with worms. The goal of deworming a horse is not to eradicate all worms; it’s to control their numbers to a subclinical level and minimise pasture contamination.
2 DO NOT deworm your horse every 6-8 weeks as suggested by too many sources - often the drug companies selling their product!
3 Foals and adults get different worms and thus require different deworming drugs. See overleaf for full description of which worms affect foals and horses, and which treatments are recommended.
4 The GOLD STANDARD for prudent deworming is to have a faecal egg count (FEC) done on your horse prior to any treatment and then a faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT) if the horse was treated based on the FEC results. The FEC will give an indication as to the burden of intestinal worms (namely strongyles) in your horse and the FECRT will provide some data as to the efficacy of the drug used, so that we know if it’s worked and how well.
EQUINE NEWS.COM.AU 13
The big take home message here is do not over-deworm your horse. Take into account weather, season, grazing management, FEC, age of horse, target parasite species. Consult an equine vet to get detailed advice for your horses or contact NEEVS for more detailed and tailored deworming strategies as this is by no means an exhaustive document but rather an attempt to change the way we use these drugs to make them last longer.
There are no new de-wormers in the pipeline for horses that we are aware of, and moxidectin which was originally registered as eliminating worm egg re-emergence for 16 weeks now has eggs re-emerging after only 4 weeks post treatment!
PLEASE HELP US ALL NOT TO OVER USE THESE DRUGS
Foals are particularly susceptible to ascarids (namely Parascaris species) in the age range 2 months up to about weaning age of 6-8 months. Ascarid worms are mostly RESISTANT to ivermectin and moxidectin drugs, so do not use products containing these as their main active. And in any case where they may work, these two drugs cause a rapid kill of the worms which can be fatal to the foal if they are carrying a large worm burden.
The BZ drugs such as fenbendazole are the drug of choice for treating foals. There is minimal known resistance and this drug causes a slow kill of the worms over days which is somewhat safer for the foal.
Adults (from 8 months onwards) are mostly afflicted by small strongyles (cyathostomins) These are ubiquitous and EVERY horse lives with these worms and they actually don’t cause disease in every horse they parasitise. Healthy immuno-competent horses live with these worms quite happily. The goal of treating these worms is to minimise pasture contamination and reduce the numbers to manageable levels.
The most important disease caused by these guys is larval cyathostominosis, which occurs when hundreds of thousands of larval worms buried in the horse’s intestinal wall decide to exit all at once and this causes profuse damage to the intestine and can be fatal.
Cyathostomins are RESISTANT to the BZ drugs and are best treated with an ivermectin or moxidectin based drug.

Large strongyles have been mostly cleaned up since the introduction of ivermectin some decades ago now and as such these worms are actually quite rare in horses that are dewormed even once a year. Wild horses for instance would probably have heavier burdens of these worms. Tapeworms attach themselves to the ileocaecal junction and can cause disease in large numbers by slowing the passage of ingesta through that area. These guys are easily treated with PRAZIQUANTEL or PYRANTEL which are individually incorporated into several deworming products, and only need doing about once a year usually.
BOTS and PINWORMS are perhaps the most commonly asked about problems. Pinworms are ubiquitous, and you will never get rid of them! Do not deworm a horse so often as to try to kill these guys because all you’re doing is causing drug resistance. Ways to manage these are to scrub the perianal region of your horse with a povidone iodine or mild soapy water solution to reduce the egg contamination. Pinworms do not cause disease other than they are a nuisance by causing itchiness and tail rubbing.
Bots are in fact insects and not worms at all; they are the larval stage of the Gasterophilus fly. They can cause disease by way of burrowing into tissues such as the mouth and gums. IVERMECTIN is the best drug for treating these guys, closely followed by moxidectin. Cleaning the bot eggs off your horse’s hair and mane also greatly reduces the burdens of these parasites.

What does connection look like?
The following is a question I was asked that really got me thinking...
“I am wondering if I truly understand the term ‘connection’ with my horse? As opposed to me asking her what I want her to do and then demanding it when she does not do it, what does connection look like?” Connection definitely looks different to the above. First and foremost, it is a feeling. When you are connected with your horse it is the same for both of you, not just one, and there is no other feeling like it. It is the foundation from which all else comes. Without connection you will need to demand things from your horse, against their will. This is the master slave relationship. Connection is when the horse and human co-exist in the same personal space bubble, with their energies completely at ease with each other. The horse trusts you, and you trust the horse. There is no fear or forcing for either party. It is harmony.
The best way to develop connection with a horse is to spend quality time with them without an agenda. I spend a lot of just being with horses and doing nothing. If you spend time with your horse with no agenda, it changes everything. They start relaxing around you, then they seek you. Many people never do this. Imagine you had a friend and every time you saw them, they wanted you to do a job for them. After a while you would get tired of visiting them. But if sometimes when you visited you relaxed together with a few drinks, chatting, and sharing how you are feeling, then on those times when they did ask you to do a job for them you would be more than willing to help your friend. It is the same for horses.
When I approach a horse, I empty my mind of all knowledge. I do not allow myself to be the expert, I trust and follow my intuition. In this way I am 100% open to communication from the horse. When someone listens to a horse, it changes everything for them. They will give you their heart and soul. It is all about a partnership, about treating the horse with the same level of respect you would give to another human. I never do anything, no training or riding, without first connecting with the horse. From a state of connection, I can then lightly ask the horse and they can lightly respond. At times training is not even necessary once the connection is there.
When I am doing ground exercises or riding, I try to not let it become work. If the horse is not enjoying what we are doing, I stop and see if an idea for a change pops into my head, it usually does. I tune in to how the horse feels, and if they do not feel right, I do not continue. They have off days just like us, I listen to this. Then on the days when they do feel good, they will give me everything.
It is never too late to change how we are with horses. They change when we change. They let go of everything we did in the past, forgive us all our mistakes, and embrace this new kind path we walk with them effortlessly. Their ability to let go is amazing. Horses who have had rough treatment may take longer to be able to trust. But they too can let go of past negative experiences if we have patience and respect in all we do with them.
To be with your horse in this way requires acceptance. Acceptance of how things are right now in the moment. To let go of your agenda and plans if they are not right on that day. To see your horse for who they really are, with all their beauty, strengths and weaknesses. And to be there for them as a friend.

Author Jess Symons, Red Earth Brumbys
She wandered over to the yards ready to start feed up and in them, there was a tiny little grey colt brumby from Corindi Beach. He had been in a slumber alongside a huge Guy Fawkes mare, standing side by side with the big steel panel between them and he startled upon the woman’s approach. He did his usual dance around and snort as she tossed hay out for everyone.
On a whim, she squeezed through the panels and into his yard, murmuring softly to him gentle words of encouragement. He bolted past her up to the other end and spun around to face her, eyes wide, body tense, quivering and geared for flight again. She took a step forward, crouched down on one knee and waited. His tiny little ears flickered backward and forward, alternating, and she could see his mind ticking over as he thought about this completely different situation. Still unsure, the little colt found some courage and took a small step forward. The woman let out the breath she didn’t know she’d been holding. He licked and chewed in response. Again she brought her focus to her breath, slowing and steadying it. The colt took another step forward and then another. He was within arm’s reach now and yet the woman still made no moves. She could see his curiosity come out as the natural instinct to flee faded from his body. She watched out of her peripheral vision as he let out a huge breath and took one last step forward, reaching his soft gentle nose out to her.
He breathed on her, whiskers tickling her face, exploring in the most kindest and gentlest of ways. She breathed on him, together their breaths mingling, scents exchanged and in the intricate language that is Equus a bond begins to form. The foundation of this bond is trust and without it, neither side can play their part in this relationship.
The woman goes through several moments of panic as she allows the fears of others to drive her mind. “He’s a colt, don’t ever let your guard down with them” “watch he doesn’t bite you” “You can never trust a colt”. All these thoughts and more start to bubble up to the surface as the little Corindi Grey traces patterns across her forehead with his whiskers. She feels her vulnerability kick in and for a moment the fears move into overdrive. She forces herself to stay still, calm and drop back into her place of love, her heart space.
Not once does he show any signs of wanting to hurt her, rather he just really wants to get to know her. She reaches out and allows him to explore her hand, then he finds her knee, her boots, and her jacket where he lingers with some pressure, resting his head in her chest.
By this time her legs are burning from the position she is crouching in and her ankle feels like it’s going to break so she shifts weight onto the opposite leg slowly but purposefully. She expects the colt to race off in a panic but he doesn’t, he merely follows her movements with his nose and once she’s repositioned herself he returns to the deep breathing and exploration of her face.
She feels her skin on her forehead come alive as his whiskers move across it and she realizes there is a deep energetic exchange going on. She begins to notice a pattern to his exploration. Right nostril, then left, then back again. Even the energy in the breath within each nostril feels slightly different and she now becomes aware of a gentle humming vibration surrounding them.
She reaches up and gently strokes the underside of his neck. He leans in as his eye partially closes and she begins to feel his enjoyment envelop them like a soft mist. “You are so beautiful” she whispers to him as tears begin to roll down her face.
They stay like this, face to face, energies entwined, sharing each other’s breath as time stands still and all else is lost to the little grey colt and his newfound friend. All that matters is this moment right now, this connection and not even her burning body is felt anymore.
And then, as if someone had clicked their fingers the deep energy shifted and the colt slowly took a step back away from her and then moved around her to go back to his hay. No more whites in his eyes, no more darting around with high energy, just a deep content calm. She wiped her tears away as she straightened up and sent a mental thank you out to the Universe for allowing such magic to enter her life. With her heart full she left the yards and headed back toward her home, carrying the Colt in her soul and leaving a piece of her with his.

Shiver = ‘….to shake slightly and uncontrollably as a result of being cold, frightened, or excited….’. Certainly many things can cause horses to shiver, including pain or cold. However, the condition of ‘shivers’ in horses is actually a brain disorder that causes trembling in the hind limb muscles and makes it difficult for horses to walk backwards.
Dr Jennifer Stewart BVSc BSc PhD Equine veterinarian, CEO Jenquine and consultant nutritionist Equine Clinical Nutrition
AUTUMN 2022 20 EQUINE NEWS.COM.AU
Shivers is thought to be caused by a defect in a region of the brain called the cerebellum. The cerebellum controls muscle activity and horses with shivers lack the “off switch” that regulates muscle activity. Symptoms can be exacerbated by stress or excitement, transport and footing changes.
Reported for centuries, shivers is now known to be an inherited condition. It is found mainly in pure and cross-bred drafthorses (Belgian, Clydesdale and Shire), warmbloods and thoroughbreds, but has also been reported in light harness horses, hunters, hunter-jumpers, hacks and Quarterhorses. Tall horses, especially those over 16.2 hands, are more susceptible than shorter horses - it’s very rare in ponies and miniatures. Signs of shivers show up between 2 and 10 years of age – and are progressive over the years.
Typical early signs include problems lifting a hind limb and difficulties during backing. The first sign of shivers might be noticed when you pick up a hind leg to clean the hoof – or when the farrier visits and has difficulty holding up a hind leg. One or both back legs may be very difficult to flex manually and, even when the foot is successfully lifted, it may quickly be slammed back to the ground. Mildly affected horses show a tenseness or trembling of the hindlimbs and sudden jerky movements and elevation of the tail. In more severely affected horses, the hindlimb is suddenly raised and held out sideways for several seconds or a minute or more. When backing, horses will brace their body and raise their head and neck up or down. The hindleg trembles or shivers when lifted and their tail is elevated and trembling. An increased degree of tail swing when backing and at the walk occurs in some horses – however, increased tail movement is itself a sign of muscle or bone pain. When walking backwards, the normal sequence of backing-up (first the right front leg, then the left hind, then left front, then right hind) is disrupted but there are no problems walking forwards. After a few moments, the spasms of the limb and tail gradually subside and the foot is brought slowly or rapidly to the ground. The signs may reappear every time the horse is forced to move backwards. Backing often is accompanied by elevation, quivering or a pump-like action of the tail and tremoring of the muscles of the tail and pelvic limbs.
When asked to back up, turn or lift its hind legs, the horse may have grimacing, twitching and quivering of the muscles of the face, especially around the lips and eyelids, twitching ears and rapid blinking. Some horses may refuse to move backwards, drag their feet along the ground or back-up with a hopping gait. These horses can become impossible to back-up and for the farrier to work on their hind feet.
Affected horses may also have a choppy gait, exercise intolerance, reduced strength, be reluctant to lie down and develop muscle atrophy. Most will sleep standing up. This can lead to sleep deprivation and frequent half falls causing wounds on the front of the hind fetlocks and bruising of the knees. Many stand with their back legs widely apart to brace themselves and others may sweat a lot (a common sign of pain). Some stand on the toes of their back legs. Horses may become sensitive to being groomed, with the brushing provoking a spontaneous episode of shivers. In severe cases signs will become apparent during forward walking – especially during the first several steps or when turning sharply. Walking speed slows and stride length shortens.

Although the diagnosis of shivers seldom presents a problem, in the early stages the signs can be intermittent or occasional. This makes them easily confused with other conditions such as tying-up, stringhalt or some other movement disorder. Stringhalt also causes an involuntary hyperflexion of one or both hindlimbs during backing and at the walk and trot. If your horses shows any signs of shivers, seek a veterinary examination to rule out stringhalt, hock pain, upward fixation of the patella, motor neurone disease or other muscle, bone or nerve conditions.
Unfortunately, there is no effective treatment for shivers. Some horses remain relatively stable over time, moving normally at gaits above the walk for years and continuing to compete successfully in dressage and jumping. But, in around 50% of cases, shivers slowly progresses over 10 years to the point that they no longer can be ridden. The impact can be most notable in sports like dressage where fine motor control is important especially at upper levels and in driving where horses must be able to back into a hitch. Symptoms may decrease when the horse is rested but recur when work is started back. Supplementing with vitamin E and magnesium is recommended, and feeding a diet low in sugar and starch and high in fat may be helpful.
If you have a horse that gives the farrier a hard time trimming only the hind legs, shivers could be involved. Signs of shivers may also become apparent when affected horses are offered a pail of water on the ground.
They become excited, and upon extending the neck muscle spasms occur in the hindquarters, the fore feet remain planted on the ground, the body sways backwards, the back is arched, and the tail is jerked upwards. When let out onto pasture the “shiverer” horse may lay down and there may be an improvement in the disease. It is impossible to predict which horses remain static and which horses will progressively worsen and how quickly progression will occur.
Horses with possible signs of shivers need a complete veterinary evaluation to rule out abnormalities in the hooves, bones, joints and tendons that may cause similar symptoms. Your veterinarian will be able to confirm the diagnosis, rule out other possibilities and recommend appropriate treatment and management to help your horse.

MILESTONE Store Opening
After an exhaustive search for the right location, and then some long delays due to wet weather, the team at McGregor Gourlay Grafton was thrilled to finally open the doors to customers at their brand new facility in December.
McGregor Gourlay first established a branch at Hyde Street in Grafton in 2014, as part of a broader expansion to the northern NSW coastal region that included Alstonville, Lismore and Murwillumbah. Within the first few years of operations it became clear that Hyde Street was already being stretched to the limit as the branch experienced rapid growth, but alternative locations were very difficult to find. According to Branch Manager Phil Nelson, “I reckon we looked through just about every industrial site on the market, but with the region seeing a lot of growth in recent years and not much available we just couldn’t find anything that came close to ticking all the boxes. So the board said let’s just focus on finding some land in the right location and build it ourselves. And that’s what we did.”
The result has been a custom built site just a stones throw from the original Hyde Street location, on Mulgi Drive adjacent the Grafton Saleyards. The site was developed by builder Barry Jackson, who hails from McGregor Gourlay’s heartland of Warialda. Barry undertook the extensive renovations of the company’s Warialda premises in the leadup to the branch’s 120 year celebrations of 2017, and so according to McGregor Gourlay’s Managing Director Josh McGregor, “It was very fitting that we had Barry manage the project for us at Grafton. He’d done an absolutely first rate job of completely overhauling our oldest branch, so we knew he was the right man for the job to build our newest.”
The team at Grafton have been over the moon with the result, as have their customers. “We now have a site that’s over 4 times the size of what we were operating out of at Hyde Street. So whilst it’s obviously much easier to store and display stock and a much improved shopping experience for our customers, it’s also now a far safer operation where we can keep very good separation between loading movements and customer traffic.”
The Grafton development is just the latest milestone in what has been a story of steady growth in the coastal region for McGregor Gourlay since kicking off over 7 years ago. The original team of 12 has more than doubled to over 30 staff including 9 agronomists specialising in
everything from macadamias to sugar cane, tea tree, pastures and a range of fruit and vegetable production. According to McGregor Gourlay’s Group General Manager Michael Slater, people have been the key: “We’re fortunate to have an excellent group of people across our network, who know each other well and always get in to help out and try and make every location a success. Whether it be agronomy, administration, logistics or sales, the ‘old hands’ are there for the whole team and always look at the network as a single unit.”

Artists Combine Talents for Upcoming Exhibition
Louise Green Artist
Born in Newcastle NSW, I have drawn horses since the age of three.
Art was a main subject at High School and my dream was to be an Equine Artist one day.
I combined both my passions of horses and art for many years, juggling between competing, breeding and riding my own horses and exhibiting my work.
I love using pastels and oils, followed by acrylics, pencil, mixed media and I also paint on stones.
Favourite subjects are Friesian Horses, Gypsy Cobs, Paints and Unicorns. I have won numerous awards, and had several solo exhibitions, and competed in over 100 group showings.
Much of my work has sold overseas.
I'm looking forward to my first duo exhibition "FOR THE LOVE OF FRIESIAN HORSES" (June 2022) with Photographic artist Trudi Simmonds. It should be something quite special. www.painteddreamsstudio.com
UPCOMING EXHIBITION
Trudi Simmonds
Photographic Artist
l started taking photos many years ago but always saw much more in each photograph than what was actually there.
This eventually led me to exploring with Photoshop and digital paint programs around 15 years ago.
What starts out as my base photo ends up being blended with sometimes up to 30 or more other photos depending on the idea.
Once l have my design then l digitally paint the image to finish the piece. An example of my work is ‘RAVEN’ featured on the front Cover of this issue.
My primary focus is on the heavy and carriage horse breeds.
My work is sold here in Australia and overseas & my website can be found at www.trudi-simmonds.pixels.com

Ever wondered what the heck WEC (Worm Egg Counting) or FEC (Faecal Egg Counting) actually mean and why you need to include regular WEC or FEC testing in your routine horse health care?
We chat with Larissa Trickey, founder of WormGuide Equine, to find out more.
Hi Larissa. Welcome to Equine News. Tell me a bit about you and Team WormGuide.
Most people are either disgusted or fascinated by what my team and I do. It’s not exactly a dinner table topic of conversation but, we analyse horse poo, and lots of it, from all over the country, for very good reason: manure samples provide useful and important information about the type of intestinal worm present, the level of strongyle worm egg shedding, and the efficacy of the dewormer being used. Without this information it is impossible to effectively manage worm control and it’s likely that the dewormer you choose will be wrong. So, I guess you could say, I’m a horse lover on a mission to help horse people protect their horses and their properties with high-performance poop testing.
Okay ... so why poop testing?
When it comes to horse health, manure samples are a gold mine of useful data. Analysing manure with a FEC test (faecal egg count test), also known as a WEC or a worm egg count test, allows us to identify which worms your horses are harbouring, particularly in foals and yearlings; which horses are the higher strongyle worm egg shedders (adult horses); and whether the treatment worked as intended for all age groups. Reliable information, gathered from fresh, correctly preserved manure samples, is a vital for protecting our horses from worms capable of causing serious disease and managing our way around the dewormer resistance crisis. I like to think that Team WormGuide are the masters of the FEC test.
Are Faecal Egg Count Tests a new thing?
FEC’s are not new, they have been on the periphery of equine worm control for some time, but our convenient, vet-approved egg count system is. Traditional FEC methods rely on separating worm eggs from a manure sample by adding a flotation solution that lifts the tiny, less dense eggs free so they can be counted manually using a microscope. The McMaster microscope technique was developed in the 1930’s at the University of Sydney and has been by far the most commonly used test until now.
Unfortunately, the microscope FEC test has also been associated with sampling errors and has the potential to produce results that are substantially further away from the “true” egg count value. This is problematic because accurate, high-quality information helps horse owners deworm the right way. Resistance threatens horse health and egg count knowledge is power.
AUTUMN 2022 38 EQUINE NEWS.COM.AU
You’ve mentioned resistance a few times. Can you tell our readers a bit more about horse wormer resistance?
Resistance, also known as dewormer resistance, horse wormer resistance, drench resistance, or anthelmintic resistance, is at the heart of everything we do at WormGuide. Resistance is a global problem that refers to the ability of horse worms to survive the worming treatments that were once effective in killing them. Worms that survive treatment pass on this invincibility gene to the next generation of worms and so the problem grows. Resistance is rampant to all available drug classes and has already been detected on many Australian horse properties. This is a big deal, a red alert actually, because resistant worms cannot be killed, can spread from property to property with the movement of horses and can ruin pastures because once they infect your property they can never be removed.
Is the news all bad?
The news is not all bad. The world-renowned AAEP Equine Parasitology Task Force, the world’s best worm control research team, have developed worm control guidelines to help horse owners slow the development of resistance and worm the right way. Not over worming is a crucial step.
According to the Task Force, frequent antiparasitic drug treatments are no longer a valued strategy for keeping adult horses healthy: individualised deworming and targeted treatments based on faecal egg count evidence are the new focus of equine worm control. Many horses who are wormed using up-to-date egg count guided strategies only need worming twice a year. This might shock a few people but in my opinion it’s great news for our horses, our environments, and our hip pockets. Research shows that reliable faecal egg count guided strategies can reduce dewormer medication use by up to 75%.
How do horse owners who are worming every 8 weeks or so make the switch to individualised deworming and targeted treatments?
Reliable faecal egg counts are the first step to making the switch to individualised strategies. We need to stop worming too much, blindly rotating between products, thinking we need to use every worming product on the shelf. Instead, we must follow important recommendations and treat the right worms at the right time with the right treatments using the right faecal egg count information. When my team and I looked into the Australian egg count situation we realised how few horse owners actually trusted simple run of the mill FEC tests, knew the benefits or knew how to use their test results. This really worried me, because knowing how to use the information is the second most important step. We cannot afford to be complacent. That’s why I founded WormGuide Equine. Our precision faecal egg count service, convenient Kit and ongoing customer support tools address all of these issues. The worm control research team tell us we can no longer rely on worming treatments alone, so we are making waves in vet clinics and stables everywhere to makes sure horse owners have everything they need to make positive changes to their worm control approach.
EQUINE NEWS.COM.AU 39
So, what are the benefits of Faecal Egg Count Testing?
This is my favourite topic. I could talk about this for hours because the benefits are huge. Precise worm egg count tests, performed with the latest biotechnology and image analysis can be used to detect horse wormer resistance and emerging resistance on your property, tell you if your wormer killed the egg laying worms in your horse, tell you how often to worm your horse, they can inform your treatment choices, protect youngsters, protect biodiversity of your pastures, and evaluate the effectiveness of your non-chemical methods like pasture rotation and manure removal to ensure horses don`t pick up many worms in the first place … and they’re just the benefits I can think of off the top of my head.

10 hours performing nutrition case studies
Start anytime and work at your own pace. This course never expires so you will always have access to the material!
Any final piece of FEC testing advice you’d like to give to our readers?
Resistance testing is now the most important reason for doing faecal egg counts. Checking that your wormer worked is vital. Our vet-approved Kit, precision high-performance FEC tests and all the support tools that go along with it, make it easy to incorporate vital testing into your horse routine management and care. It is a welfare issue that we cannot afford to overlook.
We are making lasting change. Customers tell us the best things about using high-performing FECs to guide their worm control decisions is no more guesswork, no more wasted time and effort, no more misguided control and no more wasting money on wormers that won’t work. And if horses could talk, I reckon they’d say the best thing about regular precision FEC testing is Team WormGuide, but of course I’m biased!
WormGuide’s bio-secure sample collection Kit is part of a complete vet-approved system that not only delivers amazingly accurate, easy to understand images (that identify and count multiple worm egg types) straight to their clients’ inboxes, the Kit has multiple uses, comes with worm related vet consults, ongoing customer support and an exclusive eBook that helps horse owners make positive, age-appropriate changes to their worm control.
Visit wormguide.com.au for more information about faecal worm egg count tests or contact us at info@wormguide.com.au to find out more about stocking or using the WormGuide Worm Egg Count Test Kit.
About WormGuide Equine Founder, Larissa Trickey
Larissa is the Founding Director of equine health company, WormGuide Equine, based in Queensland’s gorgeous Mooloolah Valley. What started out as a hunt to find the best worm control technology for her beloved horses King, Sam, Clipsal, Taz, Charlie and Mr Moonlight, quickly turned into a heartfelt crusade to bring the latest worm egg count diagnostics to horse owners everywhere.
With generations of equine industry experience, Larissa knew the challenges the Australian equine industry faces in the race to protect horses from resistant intestinal worms, so consulted renowned parasitologists to understand the realities of dewormer resistance and the latest science-based worm control solutions, before developing a convenient environmentally friendly Kit that makes it easy for all horse owners to use high performing biotech digital worm egg counts for accurate and precise information to protect their horses from high worm burdens. Positive lasting change and happy healthy horses are her mission.
