Mosquito-borne Diseases of Horses

In Australia we have a few diseases of horses that are caused by viruses spread by biting invertebrates (eg insects, ticks), called arboviruses (a term derived from ARthropod-BOrne virus). Most often in relation to horses (and humans), the virus is transmitted by a mosquito bite.

Ross River Virus (RRV) is probably the most well known of these arboviruses in Australia. Others include West Nile Virus and Murray Valley Encephalitis Virus. The extent of which RRV causes clinical disease in horses is actually open to debate and a diagnosis on clinical signs alone may not be a straight forward one. Studies looking at seroprevalence (horses who have antibodies to the virus) have shown that horses in certain regions can have surprisingly high seroprevalence; SE Qld 20-30%, northern Qld 90%and Victoria 50-60%. One study in the 1980’s in which the virus was injected directly into 14 horses demonstrated that only 50% of horses became viraemic (had the presence of the virus isolated in their blood) and none of them became clinically unwell. In 2011 we experienced widespread high rainfall over eastern Australia and this contributed to the largest outbreak of equine arboviruses to date, with upward of 900+ reported diagnosed cases.

So how do vets diagnose RRV in your horse? Clinical signs can include: • muscle soreness/stiffness (myalgia) • lethargy • fever • swollen joints (polyarthritis) • swollen distal limbs (oedema) Neurological signs caused by encephalitis (swollen brain tissue) may include: • loss of balance (ataxia) • stumbling • recumbency, and • breathing difficulties (dyspnoea). 4 EQUINE NEWS.COM.AU

SUMMER 2021

Whilst RRV and other arboviruses are present in our horse populations the clinical signs of infection can be a complex diagnosis. You must consider all possible causes of the presenting clinical signs and consult your equine veterinarian for specific advice and management on your farm. Laboratory tests vary and depend on which stage of disease the horse may be in. If the horse is clinically unwell we may attempt to look for virus in the blood. Another method is a virus neurtalization test, which mixes antibodies with virus and thirdly, paired blood antibody titres can be conducted, in which rising titres several weeks apart would suggest recent infection. Note that a single antibody titre is of limited use because of potentially high seroprevalence among the horse population, and virus isolation may be limited by the fact not all horses become viraemic. Of course RRV must be differentiated from other serious infections such as Hendra virus and other causes of any of the clinical signs observed. Once diagnosed, treatment for RRV is symptomatic, and largely involves anti-inflammatories/analgesics, supportive nursing care, possible use of anti-oxidants, and antibiotics only if secondary signs indicate their need. Remember antibiotics do nothing to fight off viruses! We also advocate the use of the arthritis modifying medication pentasan polysulfate for at least prolonged cases of confirmed RRV or other similar viruses. This medication may help to limit joint damage caused by inflammation in the joint space which we know can cause permanent damage. There currently are no vaccines available to horses in Australia for any of these viruses.

Most horses recover from arboviruses however some may experience prolonged clinical signs and anecdotal evidence suggests some high performance horses may never return to full pre-infection athletic ability. There is also some evidence that suggests a small number of horses may contribute to the “pool” of virus for spreading via mosquitos to other horses and humans but this is very unlikely given the population density of horses in Australia.

Horses that

BITE & KICK A horse spends 17 to 18 hours per day eating. Can you imagine how strong their jaws are? Plus, they have nice big teeth at the front of their mouth, perfect for nipping other horses…or people. A biting horse can do serious damage, so this is not a behaviour to be taken lightly. The horses’ hindquarters are solid muscle, if you receive the full power of a kick to a vital area, it can be fatal. For these reasons, if you are a beginner with horses or are nervous and feel in danger, I recommend highly that you call in an equine professional to help you deal with these behaviours. If you feel you are up for it, read on... First, it is a good idea to try and work out why the horse is biting or kicking. This is where we wish horses could talk with words, because it is not always easy to discover. If you can find some history on the horse, that may shed some light. If possible, contact previous owners and ask how long the behaviour has been there, and what happened immediately before it started. If a horse is a confirmed biter or kicker and has been doing it for years, it can take time to shift. However, often we know very little detail of a horse’s past and never discover the root cause. An important step is to look at possible pain. Calling in an equine professional such as a vet or chiropractor to see if your horse is in pain, is an important step. If the behaviour is caused by pain, not only is it important for medical and moral reasons to deal with the underlying cause, but also no amount of training of any standard is going to make a difference. At times being a horse person is like being a detective. If you have

exhausted all the above avenues and the behaviour persists then it’s time to look at training. See if there is a particular situation where your horse bites or kicks, any predictability to the behaviour. If you know the trigger, things are a bit clearer. For example, if your horse bites when you are mounting, check saddle fit, style of girth, back pain/issues, how you are mounting. If your horse kicks when you pick up a hind hoof, work on desensitising the hind legs and picking up the hooves. Try and find a pattern. When working with these types of issues, start by doing some connection work first, yields, walking or circles help the horse and human tune into each other.

With both biting and kicking, you don’t want to accidentally reward the behaviour by stepping back when the horse goes for you. This will just reinforce the behaviour and is sometimes the reason why it developed. You’re wanting to set things up and take it slowly so that this doesn’t happen. If for safety reasons you must move, do, but try to set it up so there’s as little as possible of this. I don’t use food rewards with a biting horse until the biting has ceased. We do not want that mouth coming to us for any reason, and sometimes giving treats by hand is where it all started. Once the behaviour is under control, food rewards can be re-introduced after the horse has learnt to turn their head away to receive them. I begin by standing beside the head in a normal position and wait for the horse to bite. When they do I have the point of my elbow ready, and they bump into it. I do not move; it is the horse’s choice to bring the head around for a nip or not. I sometimes do this alone, and sometimes add a verbal reprimand. Horses hate a deep, guttural growl. I do not hit horses, ever, and their dislike of the growl is enough anyway. If you hit the horse, you are reinforcing to the horse that humans are not good to be around, plus it is ineffective anyway. We want to deal with the behaviour AND develop a trusting, respectful relationship at the same time. This is a simple and effective way of reducing biting, and there are other great techniques out there too. Monty Roberts has a method where you tap the horses’ leg with your foot when they go to bite, thereby distracting them and redirecting their attention. It’s good

8 EQUINE NEWS.COM.AU

SUMMER 2021

to have a few techniques up your sleeve, as every horse is different and will respond to different methods.

As I stated earlier, kicking is a very serious behaviour, and can have fatal results. If your horse is super aggressive and dominant or you don’t feel safe, please seek a professional to help you with this behaviour. A common way to deal with kickers is punishment, but this just reinforces to the horse to deal with violence by using violence. We are meant to be the smart ones; we can always find a way to work with a horse’s behaviours without resorting to violence. If a horse is not in pain, then they’re either fearful or trying to dominate you. If fearful and you use punishment this will only increase the fear. If the horse is trying to dominate you, there are more effective ways of showing the horse that they are not dominant over you, rather than resorting to violence.

It’s not just about the training, but all the handling you do with the horse. If you exhibit submissive behaviour in your daily handling of the horse, then no amount of training will change the behaviour. Consistency is essential. When the horse sees you as their herd leader, they will respect your place in society and the kicking stops. If you are not proficient with equine behaviour cues, I suggest you enlist a professional to help you understand equine body language. When you use violence to stop kicking, the horse will fear you and they may stop kicking temporarily, but at some time in the future it will re-appear. That’s what happens with punishment, that’s why it’s an ineffective training tool. I have a very dominant mare, one of those mares who walks toward a group of horses, and they scatter, they have learnt she will kick them if they don’t. I have earnt her respect and she sees me as her leader within the herd structure. When this happened, she stopped kicking out at me. At first this was just with me, but as time went by, she then transferred this behaviour to all other humans. Now she only kicks out at other horses if they are in her space uninvited. With a kicker, don’t walk close behind them and be aware at all times of what they’re doing and their current headspace. Always let them know you’re approaching, don’t startle them. Carry a stick to guard your personal safety (a long one such as a training, dressage, or carriage stick). Take the horse into a clear workspace and ask them to stand a respectful distance from you, facing you. If they try and dance to either side, block with the stick. If they try and come on top of you, block with the stick. Keep going until the horse stands quietly facing you, then give lots of praise. At no point should you move your feet and especially don’t step backwards. We are wanting to control the horses’ feet, not the other way around. It may take a while and more than one session for the horse to be able to stand steady and calmly facing you. Once your horse is calmly standing, yield the horses hind quarters to the side using the stick as a guide, keeping the head towards you. This is you asking the horse to move the hind legs away and taking control of the business end. Repeat this until the horse will move their hind quarters to the side just when you raise your hand to indicate it. This is very handy to have programmed into a kicker for your personal safety, plus it doubles as putting you in the position of leader.

Got Miniature Horses? www.imhr.com.au EQUINE NEWS.COM.AU

9

Again using the stick, and with the horse standing steady, stand halfway down the horses’ side and run the stick along the horses’ body, then down the back legs. If the horse kicks out, they get the stick, not you. A guttural voice correction can be given each time they kick. Be aware that some horses can cow kick (go out to the side) so stand next to the belly, not the hind quarters. Keep repeating this until the horse has no reaction and remains calm when the stick touches every part of the back legs. Again, this may take more than one session. Once this is achieved, repeat the procedure but with your hand. You must be very sure your horse is ready before you use the hand. In all of this you are wanting to set things up so you are physically safe, so that when the horse kicks, you don’t need to move backwards for safety. It’s imperative that the horse at no point can make you move your feet or go backwards, this reinforces the kicking. Having said this, if things go pear shaped and you are in real danger get out of there! At least that way you can come back another day and try again, which you can’t do if you’re in hospital.

Then the important part, when they stop trying to bite or kick, praise, and lavish on the love. Give them a break, change sides, or do something different when they show progress. It is so important not to just reprimand, there must also be a reward for the correct behaviour, and a rest from training. Sometimes people get

10 EQUINE NEWS.COM.AU

so busy correcting a negative behaviour, especially dangerous ones, that they forget to give the good stuff when the horse is NOT biting or kicking. Ideally you want more of this than the correction. It also ensures that we soften and relax between the reprimands, otherwise it can be a stressful procedure for both human and horse.

At the end of the day, biting and kicking humans is an absolute no go, we humans are much too soft and squishy for that. Being in a good relationship with a horse does not mean being a whimp. No horse will respect you if they think you are weak. I have zero tolerance for biting and kicking and make this clear to the horse at the start of our relationship. Horses respect me for setting my boundaries, just as another human would.

A holistic approach to

EQUINE NUTRITION Knowing what food is ideal for your horse is an extremely important component of horse care. There are many different commercial feeds, supplements and feeding plans out there so it can become very confusing. In this article, I will explain what I perceive to be the important foundation of a horse’s diet and show you how to view equine nutrition with a holistic approach.

Holistic Equine Nutrition Certification Course Equine Digestion System Before discussing a horse’s diet, it is important to have a general understanding of their digestive system. Horses have a relatively small stomach for their size. This is because they have evolved to eat small meals continuously throughout the day. Unlike humans who generally consume 2-3 big meals in a day, horses are designed to graze and travel. In the wild or when turned out on pasture, a horse will graze an average of 17 hours per day. Learn all about equine nutrition through a holistic viewpoint. This course covers the equine digestive system, body scoring, types of forages (hay and grasses), vitamins and minerals, water intake, herbs, supplementation and more! 20 hour course 10 hours online classroom time 10 hours performing nutrition case studies

Another difference between horses and people is that horses do not have gallbladder. In humans, the gallbladder serves as a storage unit for bile. When people consume a meal, the bile is released so that fats can be broken down. Since horses do not have a gallbladder, bile is constantly passing through their digestive system allowing the forage that they are consuming all day to be digested.

How Often Should You Feed Your Horse? Using the information you just learned about your horse’s digestive system, you are probably figuring out that you should feed your horse as often as you can. Since they are designed to eat all day, the ideal scenario for a horse is to be turned out on grass 24/7. If that is not a possibility, then they should be provided with a high quality hay (forage) all the time. It is recommended to give your horse access to a grass hay 24/7 and supplement with a legume (like alfalfa) or a legume/grass blend as needed. To ensure that your horse doesn’t overeat or consume the hay too quickly, we recommend using a hay net or slow feeder. This will ensure that your horse is able to pick at the hay all day. SUMMER 2021

When feeding grain, you should never feed more than 4 lbs at a time because the horse’s stomach is not able to hold and digest more than that. If you break up the feedings into 3 or more smaller feedings throughout the day, that is ideal. A horse’s diet should be made up of at least 80% forage (grass and/or hay) and 20% or less grain. Many horses do fine with no grain at all. Grain has been known to cause inflammation in the horse’s system and many horses do better on a grain free diet.

Gut Centric

What Should You Feed Your Horse? Provide your horse with grass or grass hay all day. If your horse needs additional calories (due to heavy workloads, breeding, growing, etc) add protein, fats and carbs to their diet through grains, seeds and supplements. Make sure your horse is getting adequate vitamins and minerals as well. Some feeds are fortified (meaning that the vitamins and minerals are added). If this is the case, you need to be careful when adding a vitamin/ mineral supplement because you do not want to overdose them. Some vitamins and minerals will accumulate in the horse’s system which can lead to issues that can often be just as bad or more dangerous than a deficiency. When adding a supplement to your horse’s diet, make sure the vitamins and minerals are from a high quality source and are structured in a way that allows for optimal absorption. Provide your horse with free choice salt (which contains minerals) so they can consume it as they choose to. A horse will instinctively know when they need the nutrients, electrolytes and minerals. Be sure to choose a salt that is naturally sourced and not bleached or processed.

Holistic Approach Holism means looking at the whole picture rather than the fundamental parts. When applying this to nutrition, it means that we need to look at the whole horse and take into consideration his anatomy, physiology and mental health when coming up with a feeding plan. Since horses were developed to eat small meals continuously throughout the day and their systems were designed to consumed primarily forage, it would be very physically and emotionally stressful to keep a horse in a stall or dry pen and deny them access to forage for extended periods of time. You should never ask a horse to go more than 3 hours without hay. The more turnout time a horse can have on grass (or with slow feed hay nets when grass isn’t an option), the happier the horse will be. Happy horses will be easier to train, ride and handle.

Summer is prime time for riding, but if you’re going to ride when it’s hot, plan ahead for cooling off – keep buckets of cold water beside the arena for your horse to drink or choose a trail that goes through shaded areas and crosses water – and be alert for signs of heat injury. With a few basic precautions, and a bit of attentiveness to your horse’s needs, there’s no reason why the hot days can’t be safe and comfortable for you and your horse. An understanding of heat build-up and heat dissipation (cooling) allows us to help our horses enjoy summertime as much as we do. It’s all about heat and humidity. Exercising your horse in summer when the weather is hot is different to exercising when it is hot AND humid or warm AND humid and sometimes even cool AND humid. This is because the horse’s cooling mechanisms are different when humidity is high. At high exercise intensities, muscle heat production increases 40 – 60 times. When the temperature is 20 to 25°C and the humidity is less than 30%, the heat generated by muscles during exercise can be easily cooled by the horse. To cool itself, blood is shunted to the skin and excess body heat is lost to the air. This is because when the air temperature is lower than the horses body temperature, the difference (or gradient) allows heat to freely move from the horses’ body into the air, allowing the horse to keep cool. But when the air temperature reaches around 32°C, the gradient is smaller. When body temperature = air temperature, there is no gradient to allow heat to move from the body to the air and blood shunting no longer results in cooling. Now sweating becomes the primary means by which the horse cools. Sweating wets the skin so cooling due to evaporation can occur. Sweating is the only way a horse can cool itself when air temperature is close to body temperature. However, when humidity is high, the water gradient between the skin and the air decreases, limiting the ability of the body to lose heat by sweating. This poses a serious threat to the horses’ ability to cool.

Heat stress can occur in all horses - and in a relatively short time if horses are unfit, the weather is hot and/or humid, or if fluid and electrolyte losses in sweat are not replaced. For horses performing periods of intense exercise - such as racing, polo and polo-crosse, carriage-driving and 3-day eventing - body heat production can raise body temperature by 1° C per minute and unless this heat is cooled, body temperature could continue to rise to 42°C which is close to the limits of life. When the exercise includes short bursts of strenuous, maximum intensity, overheating is a real risk. In endurance-type exercise, heat exhaustion is more often due to dehydration. Horses that have travelled long distances in the heat and sweated profusely, or have had water withheld because of particular training practices are at increased risk.

Factors that contribute to heat stress include: • high daily temperatures • warm air temperature • high humidity • poor conditioning • lack of fitness • lack of access to water

And the risk is increased with: • long-distance travel - horses lose around 2-3 litres or fluid each hour. Allow the horse at least 24-48 hours to rehydrate and recover before exercising strenuously. • poor conditioning/training • warm-up too long or too short - without a proper warm-up the rise in body temperature can be too fast for the sweating response to begin; too long a warm-up can increase body temperature too much • excess body condition • age – foals and older horses • horses in direct sunlight when the temperature is >37.5°C • hot, poorly ventilated stalls or floats • insufficient water access • insufficient salt intake • the presence of another disease or lameness • high altitude • rough or steep terrain • rider inexperience • horses transported from cooler climates that have not had time to adjust to hot weather - these horses should be provided adequate time to acclimatise to the warmer weather conditions. A 15- to 21-day acclimation period for horses travelling from cooler or drier climates helps them adjust. Acclimation increases the horse’s tolerance to heat and exercise.

The key with heat stress is to spot the signs early. These vary between horses and may include excessive sweating, decreased sweating, heavy rapid breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate and altered behaviour which can progress from dull/listless to panicky or manic as the condition becomes more serious (Table 1.). It should be noted that these signs could also be present in other disease conditions. Horses displaying signs of mild heat stress may not be obviously affected, so it is important to be aware of the common symptoms as they will often progress to more severe. Individual horses cope differently with hot or humid weather conditions so it is important to know what is normal for your horse in order that you can spot any changes as soon as they occur.

Table 1. Signs of dehydration, heat stress, heat stroke and exhaustion On summer days, it can be difficult to distinguish normal fatigue and sweatiness from dangerous heat stress in horses. Here’s what to look for and how to safeguard your horse’s well-being. Profuse sweating Less sweating or patchy sweating (may indicate anhydrosis or ‘puffs’) Thick, sticky sweat Hot skin - may become cold if the circulation shuts down Exhausted horse - struggling to stand

Skin pinch test - insensitive technique for mild dehydration High heart rate

of ways to cool themselves – sweating is compromised and their ability to regulate their body temperature diminishes, doubling their risk of heat stress. Substantial amounts of sodium, potassium, and chloride are lost in sweat. Significant amounts of calcium and magnesium can also be lost. The loss of these electrolytes can suppress the thirst reflex and the desire to drink even in the face of dehydration. This is an important point to remember – exercise can suppress the desire to drink. We have all heard “you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink.” If electrolytes lost during sweating aren’t replaced, horses can also develop ‘thumps’, ‘puffs’ and ‘tying-up’. Prevention of overheating, dehydration and electrolyte imbalances and correction of calcium and magnesium deficiencies are critical as heat and exercise-related conditions can become medical emergencies. In ‘thumps’ (SDF synchronous diaphragmatic flutter) breathing and heart beat are matched – this is seen as sudden movement of the flanks at the same frequency as the heart rate – a bit like hiccups. Low blood calcium has been linked to SDF and is also associated with muscle twitching and spasms. It can often occur during a rest break if the horse is rehydrated without proper electrolytes as this further dilutes blood calcium and potassium. Tying-up is linked to deficiencies of electrolytes, vitamins and minerals, as well as diets rich in grains. Substantial amounts of magnesium can also be lost in sweat and magnesium intake should be doubled for horses doing moderate to intense exercise.

Cooling Off Finish your exercise session with walking to begin the cooling process. When back at the yard or water point, remove all tack as quickly as possible and then wet the whole horse with copious quantities of cold water. • the FEI recommends continuous hosing or application of cold water, rather than repeated sweat scraping, as research indicates scraping while hosing does not demonstrate any added benefit. Work from both sides of the horse and ensure that the large veins on the inside of the legs and down the neck are continuously cooled. As cold water

is continuously applied it will displace the water that warms up on the horse’s skin so that scraping off in between applications of water is not necessary. Walk your horse lightly whilst cooling to aid circulation and help him to cool down more effectively. Do not apply wet towels or cooler rugs during the cooling process.

Some of the steps you can take to keep your horse cool in hot, humid weather and reduce heat stress include: • use less tack. Minimize saddle pads and leg boots and don’t rug in a float • have lots of fresh, clean water always available • sponge or hose down the large blood vessels of the neck and legs • where possible, plan exercise/training for early morning or late evening • after riding or driving, cool your horse down slowly. Loosen girths or belly bands immediately after work; allow frequent drinks of cool water and walk the horse slowly - muscles cool better and are less likely to stiffen if the horse is moving slowly • make sure there is a shade available • clip horses with heavy coats – but not too short or skin is exposed to sunburn • apply zinc oxide cream to horses with pink noses to prevent and treat sunburn. • if lots of summer flies and insects keep your horse pacing, stamping and stomping, use fly repellents, masks and rugs • prepare a bucket full of ice water and old towels can help refresh you and your horse, place them over your horse’s neck and your own • keep yourself cool and hydrated – if you get over-heated and tired you could miss warnings that your horse is showing signs of heat stress Sometimes, however, the signs of impending heat exhaustion are difficult to recognize. If you suspect your horse is developing heat stroke, call a veterinarian immediately and take extreme measures to cool your horse quickly. If the signs of heat stress are severe, your horse may need intravenous fluids and electrolyte therapy and veterinary attention should not be delayed.

The health benefits of

FERMENTED HERBS for horses

Animals (and humans!) with good gastrointestinal functions are healthier overall. A healthy gut creates a robust immune system and better capacity to manage everyday stresses. And all systems in the body are intricately connected...

It’s now well known that there is a link between gut health, the immune system and the brain. The use of fermented herbal and plant products to protect health has been a fast-growing area. The fermentation process has been utilised by humans for thousands of years. Before refrigeration people have preserved foods in a variety of ways and that’s had an impact on how (and what) many cultures have eaten. Think yoghurt, sauerkraut, dry sausage and meat and pickles! Basically, a fermentation is the process of a bacteria converting sugars into an acid, as well as a number of other substances. Fermentation ‘pre-digests’ and makes the nutrients and beneficial compounds more accessible to the body.

The popularity of fermented products has grown in recent years. And finally, science is catching up with age-old knowledge that foods should be medicine! Kombucha, apple cider vinegar, sauerkraut and pickled foods are even appearing on the shelves of the big supermarkets. Our modern diet rarely contains these foods anymore. We no longer choose foods that taste sour, tangy or bitter - we opt for sweet, sugary, fatty food with little or no fibre.

Why ferment herbs? Apart from the preservation of food, the benefit of fermentation is biologically adding more bio-available proteins, essential amino acids and vitamins.

By Amy Snow & Nancy Zidonis Horses are hardwired to be constantly vigilant. Every ounce of their sensory perception is focused on their environment to detect any potential peril. The horse’s powerful body and strong, slim legs have evolved to run away from possible danger. This is how and why horses have survived for thousands of years. An errant plastic bag snagged on a tree flapping in the breeze could be a ferocious wildcat ready to pounce. To a horse the bag presents imminent danger. We, as humans, can dismiss the flapping bag because we know it’s harmless, hence we are often not prepared for the horse’s flight reaction. Human and horse awareness are very different from each other. Given the horses’ proclivity for hypervigilance and then juxtapose that with our human desire to get our horse’s attention and focus for training, how best can horse and trainer work together? Training

Equine behaviorists and trainers can offer valuable recommendations for gaining and maintaining your horse’s attention and focus during a training session. Even the most spooky or busy-minded horse usually responds to disciplined groundwork. The general purpose of groundwork is to gain the horse’s respect. Make the groundwork interesting and gradually more challenging. Other suggestions are, while under saddle, to select exercises that require the horse to think and to consistently change your routine. The main objective is to create a relationship with your horse where there’s mutual respect and trust. We have to understand that most horses are constantly checking out their environment for potential danger, and anything sudden or unknown can appear perilous. As humans we are simply not as reactive to our environment. It takes practice to think and feel like a horse.

Acupressure Acupressure is a great resource to complement equine behaviorists’ and trainers’ recommendations for building your horse’s attention span. There are specific acupressure points, also called “acupoints,” that can reinforce a sense of trust, calm, and mutual respect while also building the horse’s confidence.

Acupoints & Locations In Chinese medicine the first two acupoints known to help the horse with gaining trust and calm are called Heart 7 (Ht 7) and Pericardium 7 (Pe 7). They are both located on the foreleg. These two acupoints can be held simultaneously because they are located just above the carpus (wrist). Ht 7 is on the lateral side, or outside, where you feel an indent. Pe 7 is located on the exact opposite side, medial side, or inside, of the horse’s leg. Place the soft tip of your thumb on one side and your forefinger on the other side and press gently. Repeat this on the other foreleg. The next acupoint is known to strengthen the horse’s sense of confidence and balance thus making him less apt to bolt at environmental triggers. Conception Vessel 12 (CV 12) is known as the “Sea of Power”. CV 12 located on the ventral midline between the end of the sternum and the horse’s umbilicus – right in the middle of the horse’s belly. Scratch that point. Offering this brief acupressure session 2-3 times per week as an adjunct to the trainer’s suggestions will help your horse focus and enjoy his training sessions with you. 22 EQUINE NEWS.COM.AU

B-COMPLETE

™ BY BANANA FEEDS AUSTRALIA –

THE REVOLUTION IN EQUINE GUT HEALTH Banana Feeds Australia has developed ‘B-COMPLETE ‘B-COMPLETE™, Nature’s Green Banana Supplement’. 100% Australian owned, 100% Australian made, and a family business, Banana Feeds Australia has made waves within the equine supplement market in a truly short time. A 100% natural supplement focused on Equine Gut Health and overall well-being. Owners have been excited to share their results from across Australia in Polocrosse, Racing, Dressage and Showing. It is not only for Polocrosse horses however, but also for disciplines including Thoroughbreds, Harness, Endurance, Jumping, Dressage, Show, Barrel Racing, and hardworking stock horses. Improved gut health is the primary benefit, leading to an improved overall temperament. Emphasis on digestibility improvements, better feed utilisation, and improved stools during travel and stressful events. A reduction in oxidative stress, reducing the environment for ulceration, and other stress related health issues. Coat health is the obvious external indication of improved internal wellbeing, and owners have reported that the shine and dapples that come from B-COMPLETE™ is like nothing they have seen before.

The natural prevalence of calming agents located in the skin of the banana, such as dopamine and serotonin, act to help the animal remain calm and settled in all environments. Its’ a patent protected product, consisting of whole dried green bananas, including the skin, the pulp, the stem and the flower ends, and nothing else! 100% NATURAL. B-COMPLETE™ has done wonders for horse owners and trainers alike, with many of Australia’s top riders adopting it as a must have supplement! EQUINE GUT HEALTH -The health benefits that derive from supplementary feeding of dried green bananas are broad and include: Green bananas have been shown to have antiulcerogenic properties. The insoluble fibre act as pre-biotics to favour the nourishment of microflora in the gut (particularly the hindgut) to stabilise the microbiome. This stability in the gut promotes immune competence allowing horses to counter bacterial, fungal, viral, or parasitic challenges whilst also improving digestion, feed utilisation and temperament. GENERAL WELL-BEING The active compounds like dopamine, norepinephrine and serotonin, that are naturally present in green bananas, all act to calm the animal and promote a sense of wellbeing, helping to make the animal more relaxed and easier to manage. ANTIOXIDANT CAPACITY Green banana is recognised as antioxidant rich, with a wide spectrum of antioxidant compounds (phenolics, carotenoids, ascorbic acid or Vitamin C, tocopherols or Vitamin E, dopamine, flavonoids, norepinephrine) which are primarily located in the peel. All improve gut health.

A Reader’s Story...

How a 12 yo girl and her newly acquired 5 yo gelding employed the forces of belief, trust, determination, dedication, hard work, coaching, love, etc to succeed and become the highest ranked Medium Level Dressage pony in Qld today!

What year did you get him and how old was he? Dynomite was purchased in 2014 as a 5 year old unbroken in complete paddock condition, he was the bottom of the pecking order in his group so he had a couple scratches, bite marks and cuts on him and also a major dental issue.

Who helped you start him and what did you do with him after he was started? We fortunately had Colin Minter who is an expert horse breaker based at our place at Hilltop Farm. I was helping out with a bit of the horse breaking process and learnt a lot by following along beside Colin. Colin helped me start Dynomite’s career under saddle. Dynomite’s laidback, easygoing attitude that is common with the Aladar offspring meant that the breaking in process went smoothly. After Dynomite was broken in it was many hours in the saddle getting us working together as a team and trusting each other, there were lots of tough rides where things felt like we weren’t getting anywhere and other rides where we felt like it just clicked. For a horse that definitely has more woah than go a lot of it was spent making him more forward and positive in his work. Also a couple months after he was broken in, he went to EVDS to get his fractured tooth removed by the amazing Oliver Liyou, the tooth had developed a tooth root infection and when it was being extracted it fractured again so it had to be removed through a hole in his cheek.

What were his first outings under saddle with you? Our first outing was at a local pony club rally day. Dynomite was really calm and relaxed and took everything in his stride he was exposed to other horses going around him, pole work, flat work and some sporting events. Dynomite also went out to a few local comps at our local club NCEC, I took him to a hack show where he won his first couple of ribbons.

What type of competitions has he won over his time and what things have you tried him at? I’ve now been on this journey with Dynomite for 7 years now and in that time we’ve been to multiple different venues for multiple different competitions, he’s truly become so much more than what everyone thought of him and he’s exceeded my expectations and continues to do so everyday. Dynomite has always been willing to please and tries his hardest at any given task, this also comes down to the versatility of his breeding being a stock horse x quarter horse he may only stand at 14.1hh but he has a super athletic ability and a trainable, smart brain. Dynomite has done: Dressage, Showjumping, Jumping Equitation, cross-country, ODEs, Sporting, Hacking/show riding, team penning, mounted games, obstacle trials, trail riding, beach riding, and bareback riding. EQUINE NEWS.COM.AU

Some of our greatest achievements in that time have been: • overall champion 2 years in a row at the Pony Club Jamboree which is an event that consists of Hacking, Dressage, Sporting and Showjumping we placed in every single event both years in a row. • Dynomite won overall B grade showjumping champion at the Pony Club High and Mighty competition held at Taree, (which is a height of 90cm- 1m courses) • We were also lucky enough to represent NSW at the Pony Club Nationals that was held a SIEC in the Novice Dressage phase, what an honour and achievement that was for us to be able to represent our

state in such a high level competition! Dynomite placed 1st, 4th and 6th at nationals and was 3rd overall in a competitive group of horses and riders from NSW, QLD, VIC, SA, WA and TAS. • Competed at Tamworth ALEC for State Pony Club Championships in both Dressage and Jumping Equitation and placed 7th in both classes. • At our local Pony Club of Glenreagh Dynomite and I took home the Perpetual Associate trophy and the Flatwork Trophy in 2019 and in previous years won the Jumping trophy and the ‘Horse’ challenge trophy which is won by being the fastest to do an obstacle course filled with different tasks to do. • Dynomite qualified for the State Sporting Championships in two events. • Recently Dynomite and I competed at the Youth National Championships held at QSEC where we placed 2nd in both of our medium level tests and got Reserve Champion Medium pony but the highlight from that event was scoring a 65% at medium level which is a Personal Best for both of us and even getting a 69.7% from one judge- yes they’re may have been many happy tears when I heard the score! • Dynomite and I also competed at The Saddlefitters Brisbane CDN in the open medium level and although we were out of the ribbons amongst the big fancy horses we did win Highest Placed Pony in both test- making Dynomite the best medium pony in the state right?!

What do you think he enjoys doing most in life when ridden or not ridden? I think Dynomite mainly enjoys eating, he’s always happy if you greet him with something he can eat! He is also a big cuddler or maybe he just likes all the attention all the time haha, because he knows how special he is and since moving to Queensland he really does think he is a big fancy Warmblood!

What has he achieved since you took him to Queensland? Since moving to Queensland and mainly focusing on Dressage as I moved to work at a professional Dressage stable (Lord Dressage Australia) Dynomite and I are learning the whole how to train a Dressage horse together. Dynomite was only at Elementary level Dressage when I started at LDA and the first thing I got to teach him was flying changes- which are so hard but yet so simple! We have learnt half pass in both trot and canter, and recently have started to teach canter pirouettes and tempi changes so now our goal for next year is to get out competing at Advance level Dressage.

How old is he now and where are you aiming to take him from here?

Dynomite is now 11 years old and I’m aiming to continue on this journey together with him, our new goal is Advanced level Dressage. This journey is also to prove that you don’t need the fanciest, flashiest, most expensive horse to go out and achieve something, if you are willing enough as a rider to put in the miles for your horse, anything is truly possible. I’ve had some amazing coaches along the way that have helped shape us into the pair we are today- Lizzie Wilson Fellows who sparked my interest in Dressage. Richard King who taught all kinds of wisdom in Showjumping, cross country and Dressage. Matt and Amy Lord from LDA who are currently helping me live out my Dressage dreams and of course my very first coach Mum who still encourages us every single day. Something I’ve always told myself was that persistence and patience always pays off, it may be hard work but at the end of the day when you look back at how far you’ve come you’ll be so proud of what you have achieved. I know I am. I’ve not only learnt so much as a rider on this journey but I’ve made a best friend and I wouldn’t give him up for the world.

Is your horse lame, muscle sore or stiff in it’s movement?
