EQUINE ABILITY Horse Starting & Education - with Trust & Understanding -

Mark Langley Mark's encounters with vast numbers of different horses have given him a deep understanding of them. His subtle postures and quick reflexes pick up on a horse's intent before you or I could catch our breath.

S

tep into the yards at “Wallaroo Waters' and you are immediately greeted by Mark's affable, warm smile. This is where he trains horses, mostly break-ins, in the New England area of NSW. It's pretty country, and Mark knows the area well. He's one of those reliable types you could safely get lost in the bush with. At the age of 13 Mark led a four day horse trek covering 150kms. Following this childhood spent mostly on the back of a horse, Mark worked in and managed various horse industries in Australia, Scotland and America, dabbling in different disciplines as he started to learn about horsemanship.

He has trained horses out on his 500 acre property after all; he knows what it's like to be on a bolting horse in the forest when both of your reins break. He has worked with many wild and tough horses, including starting a mob of 2-8 yr old brumbies headed for life in the UAE, one of which left a considerable fist sized lump on his chest after one wellaimed bite. Mark has come a long way since those days though and understands how affective every part of your training can be. And it is emphasis on this that you will find at Mark’s clinics as he teaches the foundations that avoid such disasters from happening. His horsemanship is respectful of each horse's mental capacity and personality, and is put forward in a practical way. Performance and Mark has since unselectively started and trained hundreds of horses, pleasure riders will find his skills of direct relevance. combining knowledge from other people and his own experiences to As Mark only takes small groups for formulate proven foundation skills which he now teaches at his clinics. clinics (he limits the riders to 10) he is But he hasn't stopped trying to progress his horsemanship. able to help each rider individually. “I take into account each rider's “Meeting new horses always has a buzz for me. It is trust, consistency and understanding that have got Mark to achieve some remarkable results.

Now his training is focusing on training others and it is something he thoroughly enjoys. “I try to build confidence and focus in people so that the horses can have a leader worth following. The clinics start with ground work lessons to build an understanding of energy and body control starting from the nose to the hip, and softness on the ground. The groundwork is directly related to preparing the horse for ridden exercises. Each exercise builds the horse for softening and better carriage under saddle.” The clinics are designed for all disciplines, and also for people with difficult horses, or horses with issues that need resolving, such as off the track horses. His informative and relaxed clinics have been well received. “Mark is a very skilled communicator with both horses and people. I was amazed, not only at how well he could get each horse going himself, but also how he managed to transfer his knowledge and techniques to each rider such that we all left with much greater confidence having had demonstrable success with our own efforts with our horses after only 2 days - it was amazing!”

Mark will be holding clinics throughout NSW & QLD in the next few months Phone Jenny: 0417 200 411. Email:info@equineability.com.au For dates and booking forms go to:

The Truth in the Teaching of Nuno Oliveira By Eleanor Russell NUNO OLIVEIRA... For most of the equestrian world the name says it all! Born in Portugal on 25th June 1925, Nuno Oliveira began learning his chosen profession at an early age with his Master, Joaquin Gonzales de Miranda. Nuno Oliveira learned the principles of de la Guérinière and Marialva, and he never deviated from these Classical Principles in training horses throughout his life. He retained Mr Miranda's beliefs in great discipline and calmness from both horse and rider - as well as the continued study of the writings of the Old Masters.................................................................................................. I was fortunate enough to spend almost 12 months in Nuno Oliveira's village of Avessada, Portugal, riding my French stallion, Victorieux..................................................................... It was during that time I was given permission to take these photographs… more of which appear in the book.............................................................................................................. A short time prior to Nuno Oliveira's death in February, 1989, he and I were looking at the projected book and the use of the photos. The text is simply quotes of Nuno Oliveira and from my notes over 10 years. He was most enthusiastic about the project. I remember mentioning to him at the time, that in some photos he did not look perhaps as perfect we all wish we did in photos.

He thought for a minute and then said, "But the serious rider will look beyond that". ...................................................................................... Towards the end of his life he was frequently in pain, but he continued riding his beloved horses. As a trainer he shared his knowledge with his students with a generosity I will never forget - always with endless patience he would discuss a horse's problem and the suggested solution................................................................................. His students will especially remember at day's end the glass of vino in his office and the detailed discussions of some of the movements and achievements of the horses and riders that day.

I hope the publishing of these photographs and words is a help, however small, to his many students around the world who miss Nuno Oliveira. - E.R. "The choice of a horse must first be a love affair". AMONGST the daily cares and concerns of life, each rider can, while thinking of these moments of beauty he has spent with his horse or horses, be sure that riding is an art.......................................................... One man in general is the same as another, but it is quite different if he lives in another climate and country. So it is the same for the horse. Nuno Oliveira often quoted General L'Hotte..."Horse's always remember their first habits." When I choose a horse I look first to see if I like its general appearance, it's beauty and the expression in its eyes. I look at him through half closed eyes as he is led, in hand towards me to see if his general appearance is well rounded, even if he is not well nourished. Finally I look more closely at all of his gaits then I look at his legs. A good horse is no particular colour nor a particular breed. There are good horses and bad horses in every breed but some breeds have a greater number of horses suited for one thing or another. Observe the state of mind of the horse while it moves without being excited or pushed. I watch how the back functions in all gaits. The back is the bridge between the fore and hind legs and the part that carries the rider's weight.................................................................................................. Each one must, of course, be worked according to When the rider feels and loves his horse, working to help his horse Classical Principles but you must feel sometimes the differences in the develop both physically and mentally, it is now that a rapport will develop horses and allow for it. that the horse will never forget. If the horse and rider are perhaps separated for some years, when reunited the horse will remember his riders aids and the rapport will again be there. If the trainer forgets that the memory of a horse is truly amazing then the trainer will be confronted with many difficulties during dressage training. This amazing memory of the horse remains of great importance throughout his entire training.................................................................. Your voice, caresses, and other rewards will stay in his mind as will violent blows or other severe methods of punishment which will cause loss of confidence and nervousness. Ask for much, be content with little and reward often. Horses who have a bad character are rare. In general their problems are caused by insensitive, thoughtless, inexperienced or unkind riders. Explaining to the horse always with gentle ways will give him confidence and show him there is nothing to fear. But he must understand and accept without resistance whatever you ask him to do. You must reward the horse each time he does what you ask of him, but never ask more than he is capable of giving. This will make him your friend and not your slave. Every horse is a person, with a nervous system different. Nuno Oliveira quoted Steinbrech ... "That for correct work the conformation of the horse's back is of decisive importance, and, that during the horse's training it must be the centre of attention." Correct dressage training can change a horse. It can give him a different balance and outline as his muscles develop. This improvement can sometimes cause considerable surprise!

The Rider

To reduce to the minimum the problems and resistances, which occur during training a horse, it is necessary for the rider to have patience, FIRST a relaxed mind then a relaxed horse............................................. gentleness and some intelligence.......................................................... A relaxed horse is a calm horse ... he is not a sleeping horse!................... Doctors, lawyers and businessmen think with their heads. Riders must Relax your mind - and stay at peace........................................................ learn to think with their bottoms!.............................................................. It is ridiculous to do things by force - poor horse - it looks ridiculous, it is not a beautiful thing to do things by force. The rider must pay basic attention to the horse's calmness, relaxation,

If you sit relaxed in the right position the rest is easy! You must know how, but first you must FEEL. If you know all things and have no feel that is a disaster. In training a horse, a rider cannot have only one system because each horse is different. Thousands of little things - all must be remembered by the rider. One must never cease to observe each horse. When one speaks of impulsion to the riders they have a tendency to push or rush, when one speaks of lightness they have a tendency to abandon............................................................................................... The rider who all his life looks for the best sensations or feelings from his horse, and, who each time looks for his own feelings and thoughts on each and every occasion to be more in harmony..................................... straightness, cadence, energy and promptness to the response to the aids. To return always to the basic exercises and to spend more time with them than with the more advanced exercises. These advanced exercises one asks for at a time when one feels the horse is ready to perform them.......................................................................................... It is better to do them little and well than many times and often not well. To know and understand that the spur is not always the expression of the strength of the leg but, also perhaps is an aid for relaxation and calmness of the horse.

The tactful rider feels if part of the horse is tired and knows how to help the horse to The horse is not a machine, it is a living being. Of course one rides him engage this part without and he never forgets the movements he has learnt, but what is force. necessary to know is to ask the commands correctly, without bad consequences to the body of the horse................................................... It is always necessary to complete a session of work thinking about the horse being in his best frame of mind the next day.................. FIRST a relaxed mind...then a relaxed horse.

It is the rider who decides how and in which variation of each pace he must work the horse. The final result must be good for the rider and for the horse, and not always for the judges or the spectators sitting on chairs..................................................................................................... If you move your body more than the back of the horse, there is no cooperation between you and the horse.................................................... More often than not it is we ourselves who keep a horse from performing a movement correctly because of the rider's incorrect use of aids and a poor seat................................................................................................ Observation of the horse, reflection and reading, not only of that which is written today, but also the works of the Old Masters, added to with practice will increase your understanding. Could this be the world’s best premium joint supplement and all natural anti inflammatory? We ask the question because there have been some stunning results in many inflammatory ailments in Equines and Canines alike with Technyflex .

In Equines in particular we have had success stories about horses with Laminitis, Arthritis, Muscle soreness, tendon and ligament injuries and many other ailments that befall our equine friends. The results with this product usually become apparent around day 4 to 10 of ingestion with most animals showing a big improvement around day 4. Twice daily dosing is advised for the first 10 days then once daily thereafter. The Stallion in the photo is a 22 year old Warmblood who has arthritis in his near side knee. Without Technyflex he struggles to get about. On Technyflex he is so comfortable almost to the point of being sound and has no trouble serving his mares. On approaching his mares he becomes very proud and shows nil signs of lameness. How could this be possible with such an obviously arthritic knee? We only know what we see and it is truly amazing. There are of course other results with this product showing wonderful management of healthy joints as well, so it begs the question of protection for those without problems. Could it be that if all our good comp horses were on this natural product these problems may never arise in the first place. So whether you have an old arthritic pal in the paddock, or a sound equine competitor, rest assured you are doing the best you can for their joint health when they receive their daily dose of Technyflex.

THRUSH

An in depth look at a possibly debilitating condition Most horse owners have heard of it, some have experienced it - thrush on the hoof of the horse: the smelly black stuff that sits in the central sulcus and/or the collateral grooves of the frog. It is unpleasant, but in most cases horse owners are initially not too worried about it. Smear a little Koppertox on it, spray a little antibacterial spray and all should be good. In some cases it is, in some it is not. Is it something we have to be worried about? Well, maybe, maybe not.

The Healthy Hoof Before we begin to look into thrush, let's first start with investigating what a healthy bare foot should look like. Here you see a healthy frog, sufficiently wide to carry the back of the hoof. There should be no crevices in the frog. The collateral grooves that run alongside the frog from the heel to the apex of the frog should be easy to clean with a hoofpick and pain free. The healthy frog is a fairly soft, elastic horn, and is grown by the frog corium. The frog corium is supplied with blood through arteries that branch off the digital arteries and run alongside the frog. This blood supply is crucial for the growing of the frog. The horn of the hoof capsule widens with every step when the hoof becomes weight bearing.

Healthy frogs with no sign of thrush

This is the blood supply to the frog

This widening allows blood flow throughout all tissues in the hoof. Nature had intended for this to happen for most of the day (and night) while the horse moves to graze, thus replacing dead or worn away horn with healthy new horn continuously, regardless of the terrain or weather conditions.

Why Thrush?

Have your work skills and knowledge recognised. Distance learning and assessment in your workplace.

Qualifications in: • Stablehand • Breeding • Equine Nursing

Horses with insufficient bulbs and contracted heels often are not comfortable to put the full weight on those heels. The movement pattern is ever so slightly off and the back of the hoof does not receive the stimulation it needs for sufficient horn growth. Now you may say that your horse never exhibited any movement problems. That does not mean he is not in pain. Please remember the horse is a prey animal. He does not make a sound for pain and tries to hide the pain as long as he can. That is one of his most prevalent survival mechanisms outside of flight.

The frog can only grow when the blood supply is not hindered by contractions. A contraction is any abnormality of the hoof that prevents the hoof from expanding when weight-bearing or actually becoming narrower during the weight-bearing phase. When the bars are very high and/or run far forward on the frog, the blood supply to the frog is diminished and the frog will not grow fast enough to keep up with the natural decay of the relatively soft horn. The same is true for contracted heels. The frog and bulbs just do not work properly.

High bars undercut the blood supply to the frog

In many textbooks thrush is cited as the result of unhygienic conditions such as wetness, mud, and stabling on soiled bedding. While all of this certainly does not help an already compromised frog, it is not the reason for horses exhibiting this problem. Lack of circulation (and correct trimming), lack of movement and lack of good nutrition are the main culprits.

How does it look? Thrush starts fairly benign. The heel is a little contracted, the bars are high and there is a crevice in the middle of the frog. The frog is not quite as wide as it should be, but this is seldom recognized as many professional books depict hooves with narrow frogs. The horn shows some discoloration and there may be a small flap of horn on the frog. It is not painful, so we don't give it too much thought. This crevice in the middle of the frog gets gradually deeper, eventually you can insert the hoof pick and you come away with a foul smelling, dark substance. Or you just have high bars and the foul smelling substance is at the bottom of the collateral grooves. These are signs that not all is well in frogland.

PAGE 13

First and foremost the hoof has to be brought back into balance to function optimally. That means it has to be balanced medio-laterally (left to right) as well as anterior-posterior (front to back). Balancing a hoof correctly, knowing exactly where to put the breakover and trimming in such a way that the hoof will function and return to optimal health is not always an easy task and should be executed by someone thoroughly trained in the field of barefoot trimming. An intensive knowledge of anatomy is a must for trimming compromised hooves.

Unhealthy frog where dirt accumulates under the flap

In a case of severe thrush the horse may not want to put weight on the back of the foot, as this becomes very painful. This could lead to swollen legs due to infection. In this case the immune system calls the lymphatic system for help and the leg will start to swell. Thrush also can eventually lead to founder. Because of the infection in the back of the hoof, the horse overloads the frontal connection, the laminae stretch and the coffin bone starts to rotate slowly. Restoring circulation to the frog corium may initiate the healing process, but with circulation also comes restored nerve function, which may make the horse more aware of the existing damage.

If not properly treated, the crevice gets deeper and deeper, eventually breaking into the soft tissue at the back of the hoof. Now the horse may become lame and serious treatment is necessary and will take a long time to remedy. Here you can see how close to the corium the accumulated dirt from thrush comes

It is really important to treat thrush aggressively and that requires not only a correct trim, but evenly important the involvement of the owner. Thrush often needs to be treated every day. Deep sitting thrush invading the bulbs of the hoof and the underlying tissues

What to do?

You can leave this on for 12 hours for severe cases. You may have to repeat this. We found this treatment often more effective than colloidal silver. You also can use some absorbent, purified cotton, press it with a hoof pick into the deep crevices of the thrush, saturate the cotton with a mixture of half White Lightning, half white vinegar and then wrap the hoof with Vetwrap. You may want to put several layers of duct tape over the Vetwrap to prevent the bandage to be destroyed through movement. When using cotton, try to obtain natural cotton, or maybe even sheep wool, they stay better in the hoof than the synthetic variety.

There are several ways to go about treatment. You can soak the horse in colloidal silver for several hours. That is a very holistic approach. To set this up without wasting any colloidal silver: Insert the hoof in two or three plastic bags. Leave the bags open at the top. Now insert the hoof with the plastic bags into a soaking boot. Tape the plastic bags loosely above the fetlock with duct tape. Syringe the colloidal silver into the innermost plastic bag. Soaking boots One 5 hour soak should kill all or most of the bacteria. Another similar approach is to treat the hoof with White Lightning. The set-up is pretty much the same, except that you first fill the innermost plastic bag with a mixture of half and half White Lightning and white vinegar. The acid of the vinegar will produce a gas that will kill the bacteria. You then tape the bags completely shut above the fetlock or Hoof with severe thrush packed with pastern. cotton, white lightning and secured

For less severe cases a mixture of Neosporin or bag balm and athlete's foot crème (also known as Pete's goo after the inventor Pete Ramey) may be syringed into the thrush area. Vetericyn is also an easy to apply remedy that is anti-fungal and anti-bacterial. Lately there came a new remedy on the market: No Thrush. It is a powder, which makes good sense because it absorbs some moisture, but can be tricky to apply into deep thrush areas. It always is a good idea to clean the frog with some 3% Hydrogen Peroxide Solution. Whatever remedy you choose, please make sure it is natural and not toxic. Caustic remedies may not only burn and cause unnecessary pain, but also are usually toxic.

Herbs, essential oils and homeopathic remedies are a gentle, safe yet effective natural alternative designed to promote the health and functioning of your horse's hooves. A combination of well known ingredients such as Linseed oil (Flaxseed oil), Wintergreen Oil, White willow, Horsetail (Equisetum arvense L.) and Comfrey have therapeutic abilities that soothe and calm the hoof while also maintaining overall skin health. Marigold (Calendula officinalis L.), Lavender, St. John's Wort and Arnica contain antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties thereby speeding healing and recovery of thrush in horses. These are the least invasive and most effective treatments. But it is imperative that at the same time the blood supply to the frog area is ensured by correct trimming.

www.equinenews.com.au If the frog has not regained its full width and height, your hoof care provider may elect to trim the bars a couple of millimeters shorter than usual to ensure proper blood supply. The hoof care provider plays only a small role in the recovery from thrush. The owner needs to apply remedies regularly after cleaning the hoof thoroughly and daily. And you may need to carefully consider the nutrition of the horse. If he is not getting adequate nutrition, not only is his immune system compromised, but his hoof will not be as strong as it could be...which leads to him suffering from medical problems that otherwise would probably not occur.Improved nutrition will increase the strength and durability of his hoof, and allow him to fight off the thrushcausing bacteria on his own more easily before it ever becomes a problem. Movement is another huge factor in the prevention of and recovery from thrush. The owner may have to take an active role in the movement of the horse and make sure that he gets ample movement on firm, non-concussive ground. This stimulates the hoof, flexes the hoof capsule, ensures circulation within the hoof capsule and stimulates hoof horn and frog growth.

Take home message: Thrush can be prevented with responsible horse management. Check and clean your horse's hooves daily, hire the best hoof care provider you can find, and share your concerns about the hoof with him/her. Make sure the horse gets enough movement and supply him with excellent, clean nutrition that allows the body to rebuild the tissues in a better and more functional way. Don't give thrush a chance to invade your horse's hoof. About the Author Claudia Garner has been a professional trainer for over 30 years. Evidence-based worm control in Horses

An intestinal rupture due to Parascaris equorum.

T

imes have changed in the equine worm world - The kingdom was once dominated by the very harmful large stongyles (like Strongylus vulgaris), but strategies utilising highly effective drugs at regular intervals have driven these parasites into virtual extinction on most properties. The two biggest threats to the health of our equine friends are now the cyathostomes (or small strongyles), and Parascaris equorum (the large roundworm of foals), both infecting grazing horses all around the world. To complicate matters, there are only 3 drug classes available to horse owners to treat for worms and reports of resistance to ALL of these classes are becoming more and more common. It is more important than ever that we prolong the life of our effective anthelmintics by becoming informed on how to tailor worm control for individual horses. In the same way that you wouldn't give your children antibiotics every 6-8 weeks to keep bugs at bay, our goal in equine worm control should be to treat the right horse, at the right time, for the right worms using the right product. Furthermore, forget about trying to completely suppress or eradicate worms - a zero tolerance approach is neither achievable nor sensible. Small strongyles on the surface of a ball of manure.

Rather, a balance should be sought that allows adequate exposure (for the development of immunity) and provides sufficient refugia (to slow down resistance) while maintaining clinical health of our horses. In order to do this we need evidence, and a targeted strategy. Here are some important points to consider.... Firstly, you need to know which drug classes are effective against worms on your property. It is a complete waste of time and money to treat horses with drugs that don't even work! To find this out, you can run a faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT) which assesses the effectiveness of a particular wormer by measuring egg count before, and 10-14 days after treatment. Reductions less than 95% might indicate a problem with resistance. Resistance to benzimidazole (BZ) drugs, e.g. oxfendazole, is now widespread, so it would be wise to avoid using these in isolation.

Secondly, you need to identify which horses are naturally more susceptible to worm infestations. The general rule of thumb is that about 80% of pasture contamination with worm eggs arises from just 20% of the horses in a group. Using faecal egg counts to monitor individual horses will give you an idea about which of your horses are high “eggshedders and consequently require more frequent treatment. Conversely, the low egg shedders can receive fewer treatments. Egg counts will also give you a guide on when treatment might be most appropriate (i.e. normally recommended when egg counts exceed 200 eggs per gram). Being familiar with the peak transmission times for small strongyles in your area will give you an advantage. For those of us in SE Qld, strongyle eggs can develop and larvae can survive on pasture just about all year round, but peak transmission occurs during spring / early summer and again in autumn / early winter. Timing treatments immediately prior to these high-risk periods (i.e. in late summer and late winter) helps to reduce those peaks. In addition to all of this, using good pasture hygiene where it is appropriate will also help to control worms by interfering with the life cycle. For example, removal of manure on a weekly basis, harrowing or spreading manure during hot dry periods, rotating pastures with ruminant species will all help to reduce the reliance on chemical worming treatments.

Get involved in research! We are conducting some long overdue research at the University of Queensland (Gatton campus) currently, and over the coming year, to investigate the presence of ivermectin resistance in both small strongyles and Parascaris equorum populations and also to look at the prevalence of various worm species present on Australian horse farms. There are a few ways that horse owners can become involved in the research. We are looking for people who are interested in running a FECRT on a group of 10 or more horses (or foals) on their property. If you fit this description, get in touch with the principal investigator, Dr Anne Beasley, on a.beasley@uq.edu.au for a sampling kit to be posted to you. If you only have a small number of horses, you can get involved by sending in manure samples to monitor egg counts, either just once, or over the seasons to help tailor your own individual worming plan. The service will be free of charge while the study is running, so horse owners would be mad not to take advantage of this offer! For each horse, simply collect 2-3 balls of fresh manure, place it in a zip lock bag, then combine all bags into a 2nd bag/container (Australia Post prefers double containment). Include some information, like age, sex and breed of horse, date of last worming and product used, and most importantly an email address/phone number for the results. Post in an express post satchel to Anne Beasley, School of Veterinary Science, University of QLD, Gatton, QLD, 4343. A report will be returned to you as soon as the samples are processed.

By Dr Merrilyn Fitzgerald BVSc. - Pacific Vetcare Reproduction Unit What is artificial insemination (AI)? Artificial insemination (AI) is the placement of semen into the uterus using a catheter inserted through the cervix. Mares are usually scanned daily until they begin approaching ovulation at which time they will be scanned at much closer intervals until it is time to inseminate. Hormones are normally given to the mare to ensure she ovulates. The mare will need to be re-scanned at 14 - 16 days following insemination to see if she has fallen pregnant. If a mare is confirmed to be pregnant she will be ultra-sounded again at about 45 days to confirm that the pregnancy has become established. Why use AI over natural service? Advantages 1. Increases availability of stallions nationally and internationally 2. Increases availability of genetically superior stallions. 3. Allows the use of stallions that are deceased or that are only collected during the off season (i.e. Winter). 4. The cost of shipping semen is less than the costs involved to transport the mare to and from the stud. 5. Allows you peace of mind knowing your mare is close to home. The period of time in which she is away from home is also significantly reduced.

Disadvantages 1. Fertility statistics are lower than with natural coverage over AI involving the use of fresh semen. On average, fertility of frozen semen is approximately half that of fresh semen. 2. The semen of some stallions is unsuitable for cooling or freezing. 3. The process by which the semen is frozen will have............ repercussions on the quality of the semen, thus freezing should take place at a specialized facility. Methods of AI are - Fresh-chilled semen: This is semen diluted with an extender (solution added to preserve the sperm) and then cooled slowly to -6 degrees C in a cooling container. The prefered container is an “Equitainer”, however if this type is not available a number of polystyrene containers are available which will carry out the same job. Chilled semen must be used within 24 hours of collection; hence this limits the use of chilled semen to stallions located in Australia and New Zealand. - Frozen semen - this is semen that is frozen immediately following collection. It is then stored in liquid nitrogen until required for use. What fertility rates should I expect when using chilled or frozen semen? - Chilled semen: 60%-70% as it does not undergo the freezing process. On average it will take one to two cycles to get a mare pregnant. - Frozen semen: Frozen semen has approximately half the fertility of Fresh semen, thus average fertility is 35%-40% per cycle. This means it can take numerous cycles to get a positive result. At what time of the year can I think about breeding my mare by AI? Horses are seasonally polyestrous. This means they cycle a number of times during one particular time of the year, in Australia this time of the year lies between the months of October and March. The increase in day length we receive during early spring stimulates cyclic activity. Mares tend to ovulate at 21 day intervals.

The first few cycles in early spring are in a 'transition phase' as the mare moves out of her winter ovarian inactivity. During this time the mare will show signs of oestrus behaviour (such as frequent urination, clitoral “winking”, submission to stallion etc) however she will not ovulate. The “transition phase'' can last up to 2 months. Due to this we recommend that all mares must lose their winter coats before being considered for the AI programme in an attempt to prevent wasting time with mares that aren't quite ready to be bred. Is my mare suitable? There are a number of factors that you may need to consider when deciding if your mare is suitable to be bred using AI: 1. Her age? Mares over 20 are generally unsuitable (the younger the mare the better).

Reproductive status? Maiden mares are the most fertile, and then mares with foals at foot followed by mares that have been dry for at least one season. Has the mare had previous fertility problems? Is the mare suffering from any anatomical abnormalities that will affect her ability to fall pregnant? (Your Vet will be able to advise you if you are not sure). Has the mare suffered from complications during a previous foaling? Has the mare ever aborted?

Your Vet can help you decide if your mare is suitable and reserve the right not to inseminate mares that are poor candidates. If your mare is suitable you then need to consider: 1.

Is her tetanus up to date? If she hasn't been given a booster in the last 2 years she will require a tetanus toxoid injection. If she has never been vaccinated she will need to be given tetanus antitoxin and tetanus toxoid injections followed by a second tetanus toxoid injection 3-6 weeks later.

2.

Is her worming up to date?

3.

Is she of an adequate body condition? Ideally broodmares should be slightly above average body condition and on a rising plane of nutrition. If the mare's diet is comprised of pasture only we advise that you begin supplementing with Lucerne hay and/or a hard feed at least a month prior to when she is due to be bred. When introducing new feed it is important to do this slowly over a period of a week, gradually increasing the quantity offered each day.

What questions should you ask the stallion owner or manager before deciding if he is the most appropriate stallion to use? 1.

2. 3. 4.

5. 6. 7.

When talking stallion fertility with stallion managers or owners it is important to ascertain if these statistics are based on pregnancy rates per cycle or are based on an overall pregnancy rate for the season. If statistics are based on pregnancy rates per season this gives you an accurate indication of the stallions true fertility as there is no way to know how many inseminations were needed to get that result. Has the stallion been collected or served a mare this season? The first ejaculation of the season will always contain an ejaculate of lower quality. Has the stallion got foals on the ground? When buying frozen straws how many do you receive? If this is a limited number i.e. if you are sent 3-4 straws can you get more straws if the mare fails to fall pregnant within the 3-4 inseminations? When buying chilled semen will they continue to keep sending you semen if the mare fails to fall pregnant? What are the conditions of payment? Is payment required after a 45 day scan?, do they offer a live foal guarantee? How much does it cost for additional collections? Etc. Do you need to send the semen shipper back to the stud or their vet? How much will that cost?

Rubber Fencing ~ No more injuries from contact with the fence. ~ No more fences of nylon or steel wire. ~ Easily installed on existing poles. ~ Can easily be rolled up and moved. ~ Minimal power loss even over very long distances. ~ Conductivity is not diminished by contact with grass etc.

Why is using frozen semen more expensive than chilled? AI using frozen semen needs to be timed very accurately to within 6 hours prior to ovulation and to a maximum of 6 hours after ovulation, meaning more scans are required to ensure that ovulation is not missed. Also the semen needs to be deposited as close to the oviduct of the ovulating ovary as possible due to the very small volumes of semen in each straw. This procedure is more technically demanding and requires specialized equipment.

Understanding Horse Behaviour Reading the emotion behind the behaviour. I was reading a Facebook question where someone was asking about why their horse was pawing and what that meant. It gave me the idea for this article, because there could be such a diverse range of answers to this question. It all depends‌‌. it all depends on the emotion behind the behaviour.

W

hat we need to look at is not only the behaviour but the context it is in and the emotion behind it. For example if we think about bucking, horses can buck when they are playing, buck when they are scared, buck when they are angry and defiant, or when they are in pain.

In regards to pawing, horses can paw because they are curious or they are trying to check something out, like a tarp on the ground or a horse float tailgate to see if it is safe. They can paw when they are in pain with colic or they can paw when they are very anxious and distressed. They might also paw if they are angry and frustrated.

1 1. Tex - curious, but a little unsure

2

So the key to understanding any behaviour is to know the emotion behind the behaviour, because the same behaviour can come from a very diverse range of emotions. The next thing to know is that horses are capable of feeling all of the emotions or feelings that humans do. For example, fear, resentment, happiness, joy, sadness, anger, frustration, anxiety, confusion, contentment, pride, boredom, rejection, exuberance, grief, defiance and depression, to name just a few.

3

4

2. Waru - contented, happy, connected. 3. Tight, tense, not breathing, tight cheek muscles, jaw and muzzle, not blinking, head and neck high, tight throat and ears listening, on high alert. 4. Here, I have this horses attention but he is a bit tight and not breathing, a little unsure, I have got to prove to him that I can have leadership but at the same time he does not need to fear me in any way.

5

6 5. Spirit- feeling calm, confident, self-assured and interested. 6. Helium - asking a question, enthusiastic, alert and with softness. This horse is bending through the spine (ribs).

To discover the emotion underlying the behaviour we need to LOOK, LISTEN AND FEEL. It is really not that hard because it is the same as observing people. We can get an indication of how people are feeling through observing their body language and actions and listening to the words they use. With horses we can't listen to the words but there are some sounds they may make that can give us information. Firstly, we need to look at the context of the situation and then we look for qualities of softness and relaxation or their opposites, tightness and tension. Tightness and tension are going to indicate that the horse is in a more negative mental and emotional state, or a state of physical imbalance in the body, whereas softness and relaxation indicates a more positive mental and emotional state and a physical state of balance. When I use the word soft I am referring to softness everywhere. Soft eyes, soft ears, soft loose muscles (to see and touch), soft joints, tail movement will be soft and the feet land softly on the ground.

The horse's movement would be soft, portraying rhythm and flow and bending through the spine (ribcage) as opposed to being stiff, straight, rigid or braced through spine and in particular the ribcage area. Bending through the ribcage means that horses are soft and loose through the spine and nervous system, since the central nervous system runs through the spine

They can sometimes react so quickly that even they didn't know what they were going to do before they did it. The latter is indicative of a horse that is extremely fearful and in survival mode, severely stressed and possibly pain related. In this state they can be a danger to themselves and all around them so the first management strategy is getting them to stop and THINK.

7

In the case of a horse being more calculated and thinking - if the rest of the body shows signs of softness then this is good, a thinking, soft horse is a very good thing. If the rest of the body shows signs of tightness and tension, this can be indicative of pain, discomfort, resentment or anger and clearly they are not happy about what is happening or about to happen. So in this case I would be investigating any possible physical reasons for the horse to be feeling pain or discomfort, saddle, feet, teeth, sore back etc. or any possible emotional reasons for this resistance to cooperating, like confusion, holding onto memories of previous past experiences and lack of trust in humans for example and these emotional issues would need to be addressed through training and having the horse feel understood and supported by the trainer/rider. Just 8 like with people, where there is anger and resentment, underneath there is usually a deep hurt or sadness which needs to be acknowledged and 7. This horse is tight and tense, defensive, not bending through the then released and then they can be supported and encouraged to take a ribs and spine hence the "leaning" over of the HQ's' like a motor bike fresh start and give things another go. going around a turn. 8. Both the mare and foal are a little worried and POSITIVE BODY PART NEGATIVE apprehensive. Generally soft and relaxed

Another indicator of how they are feeling and the mental space they are in will be noticing the speed of how they do things. Are they thinking, calculating or planning before they act, or are they just reacting instinctively, immediately and sometimes violently with no prior thought?

www.equinenews.com.au Often there is a combination of emotions that is, mixed emotions - For example sometimes horses will be excited and playful but there can be nervousness at the same time. This is often the case when horses see something a bit scary or different and they prance with a high head and high tail, blowing out through their nostrils.

PAGE 23 Sometimes and with practise you may start to feel some of the physical sensations that they are feeling like the tightness in the stomach associated with anxiety or tightness in the throat or chest or restricted breathing, all symptoms of stress and tension. You also could feel the opposite, where you come into the presence of a horse and you feel very calm and peaceful. Practising being centered, grounded and breathing fully (down into your centre, and expanding your centre on the in breath) will be keys to developing your intuitive and energetic feeling of the horse. It is important to know what the emotion is behind the behaviour so we can respond appropriately. Horses emotional states can change from moment to moment and we need to recognise this and be ready to adjust. Be observant, aware, open and “in the question” ? Being in the question means your mind is always asking why, how, what if and what for and then the counterbalance of this asking is the “allowing”, the quietness and the openness of the mind that allows the answer to come in.

9 9. This horse looks quite despondent, uninterested, tired, like she has "been through the mill". Even though I am "offering" her an idea rather than forcing my idea on her, she is not yet feeling different about life. As well as looking for tension or relaxation we need to feel for it. We can feel for it physically through our physical touch but also energetically. Tune into the horse and then into yourself and see how you feel when a horse displays a behaviour. Do you feel happy and at ease or distressed? For example you may have heard a horse neigh or whinny in distress and felt their distress, agitation or frustration in yourself. You may be working with a horse or just in their presence and feel very agitated and you were not feeling like this before - you may have picked up this feeling from them. The more we practise connecting into our horses, which really means getting quiet and still and with the intention to better know and understand what is going on for the horse, the better we will get at knowing how they are truly feeling even when the signs are much more subtle.

10 10. Tina Bell, Chris Millot and Winchester – enjoying a scratch.

People taking powered campsite, unpowered campsite and cabins have access to the surrounding horse yards. No horses are to be ridden or allowed in the inner camp area. The main inner camp area has three cabins, 6 powered campsites, numerous unpowered campsites and the “Gunyah” which is a large recreation room with showers, toilets, camp kitchen with microwave and refrigerators. Each night of the ride, entertainment is provided by Leigh Warren who is a well-known country western singer and entertainer, known as the Country “Outlaw”. THE NATIONAL HORSE AND PONY RESCUE first annual calendar launch. The National Horse and Pony Rescue announces their first annual calendar launch which celebrates the fresh start to life the beloved Rescue horses have been given. The calendars will be available for purchase on the website (coming soon), at various saddlery stores and feed merchants in the Northern NSW area and by phone or email order. All purchases are Tax Deductable. Founded by Kylie Kawecki in early 2012 and situated in the beautiful Bilambil Valley, Northern NSW, The National Horse and Pony Rescue helps neglected, abused, unwanted and slaughter bound horses and ponies, giving them first class rehabilitation, medical attention and training. The Rescue aims to work with the racing and breeding industries by providing them with an alternative to slaughter. The National Horse and Pony Rescue adopts these horses out to loving homes on a lifetime contract, with 24 hour support to the new owners for the life of the horse. The National Horse and Pony Rescue promotes healthy horse care and is driven to provide educational programs, training clinics and in the future Equine Facilitated Therapy. They believe that all horses and ponies are deserving of an ongoing duty of care which extends beyond the Rescue. The Rescue is a newly registered charity looking for volunteers, sponsors and donations from the public to help rehabilitate these lovely horses. Aspiring to develop Rescue centres around Australia, The National Horse and Pony Rescue is constantly looking for volunteers and beneficiaries to help make this aspiration possible. If you can help in any way, whether it be a gold coin donation, adopting a horse or pony, participating in fundraising activities, becoming a member or by providing a property to operate from, please contact: The National Horse and Pony Rescue Founder Kylie Kawecki on 0416 739 528 Or by email at: kylienhpr@hotmail.com Or the secretary Elise Linkins on 0401798584 or by email at eliselinkins@hotmail.com.

The Elite Feat

By Kailie Nott (www.kailienott.com.au)

Most riders recognise they need to improve themselves before they can expect better performances and relationships from their horses. Riders look to the elite 'equestrians' in their field of interest as role models and for strategies that may help them achieve a similar level of accomplishment. All equestrian pursuits have their masters, whose methods vary between one another. Instructors, who may or may not have trained with one of these masters, do their best to pass on the necessary skills to attain these high levels of accomplishment. So why do so few people attain a high calibre if it only takes technique to be highly effective and harmonious with horses? How can there be so many different techniques, all of which create brilliance for some people, yet they not do so for most? Proficiency may be gained through technique, but it takes more than technique to be exceptional. Here are some characteristics that I have noticed exceptional equestrians have in common: Confidence: The very best equestrians are extremely self-confident with horses. The horse does not disturb their internal level of emotional self-control. They do not get anxious or mad and do not bully their horses. They expect to succeed and their patient, quiet insistence builds confidence and willing subservience, not subjugation, in their horses. Lack of self-confidence from the rider can create nervousness or bossiness in the horse.

Persistence is not the same as inflexibility; rather, they adapt their strategies to deal with individual horses or situations. These equestrians do not need big changes or short time frames to feel satisfaction. Any small change for the better is seen as progress and helps maintain motivation in both horse and rider.

Consistency: The best equestrians are aware of their behaviour around horses. They are consistent with their aids and know how to balance Persistence: The best equestrians do not give in. They persist because consistency and variation in their routines so as not to confuse or bore they expect to succeed, understanding that patience is the road to the horse. This consistency enables the horse to predict outcomes and success and impatience the route to failure. have confidence in his interactions with people. These equestrians avoid upsetting the horse through inconsistency, which would only inhibit learning and freedom of movement. Confidence and calmness combine and express themselves physically in relaxed, fluid and expressive horses Sensitivity: The best equestrians are very sensitive to their horses. They can read a horse's emotions and physical state and so make adjustments to accommodate the needs of the horse. The sensitivity of the human towards the horse is reciprocated as sensitivity from the horse to the human. The horse is not pushed beyond his mental or physical limits. These equestrians know when and how to apply pressure to the horse, and just as importantly, when to release the pressure. As they are constantly attentive to their horse, they know when to change or finish an activity to maintain a happy, confident and willing horse.

Fun, safe and virtually shatterproof. Highly Reflective - Acrylic, not Glass Durable - Fully Customisable Also available in Vinyl for walls, cars & floats

Check out the great specials on our website!

Patience: Top equestrians are endlessly patient, with a clear vision of what they want to achieve in the short and long term. They live in the present around their horses, but always with an eye to the future. They do not mind how many times they have to repeat something to develop the horse's understanding of, or capacity for, the task. Progress is determined by the horse's needs and readiness. Success is not solely measured by external factors, such as competition results, but by how the horse has progressed over time and the feel the horse gives back to the rider. Few people are born naturally talented with horses, or have the privilege of help from truly exceptional equestrians. The challenge is great for most riders wanting to excel, as many instructors can help in developing a rider's technical skills, but true greatness lies as much in developing the intangible skills as the physical ones.

0408 074 610 kimmikadesigns.com

Equestrian' in the broad sense of being exceptional both mounted and unmounted, and having a broad perspective as well as specific areas of skill. Although I may refer to 'riders', I include any brilliant horse person, rider or not.

Tia’s Enchanting Garden The place I go when my spirits are low and eternity lights up so bright Where time can slow and feelings can flow, though the ache in my chest is still tight. When I go there I can still feel her hair, it was softer than velvet itself My sweet little mare no longer in despair, now my teardrops can dry where she rests My memory strays to that very first day when I kissed her and gave her my heart Fate came one day and took her away now her garden inspires my art A tree stands there pink Magnolia Fair it's blooms for all to see There are crystals that swing , they sparkle and dance with the breeze A wind chime that sings a sweet song causing burdens to lighten and ease A teardrop mirror as well has a story to tell, it reflects many memories so fine In “Tia”s Enchanting Garden they will be cherished until the end of time As the flowers in bloom release their perfume reality comes back to check We can never assume that there will never be gloom so lets love to the max what the heck! Special moments held dear, she will always be near until I join her in heaven myself Though time may close the book of grief, in “Tia's” Enchanting Garden memories lay behind every leaf. This Garden holds the key to her beautiful spirit set free A place where dreams are made and memories will never fade
