From The Editors Welcome to another issue of Equine News! We've dedicated this issue to horses loved and lost with the feature of an article by Dr Oliver Liyou of Equine Veterinary And Dental Services located in Grafton New South Wales who has covered the difficult subject of “saying goodbye” to our beloved horse. We are hoping this article will assist horse owners “Tia Maria” at 14 months. in dealing with the process and rest with their Gone but not forgotten. 24/1/05 - 27/8/07 decision when this sad time comes. The subject of float loading has been covered by Mark Langley of Equine Ability which offers us information to consider and some exercises we can practice to prepare our horses for safe floating and minimize the risks involved. On the subject of travel…Equissage have described for us how the use of their Tranquil-ssage setting (pre and post travel), can be of assistance to reduce muscle fatigue and stress on our horses during transit. Joint supplements are another hot topic of interest, read all about this by Jane Clothier of Balanced Horse who explains how we might recognise the signs and consider when to start feeding our horses joint supplements. The TRUTH about BOTS and PINWORM Among the large array of parasites that our equine friends are host to, bots and pinworms are the subject of most enquiries, probably because they are two of the most ‘visible’ parasites. We've all witnessed the annoyance and objection our horses display in response to the ever-persistent bot fly in summer and have noticed the yellow eggs they leave behind on the hair of the legs (and other areas of the body). Similarly, most horse owners have stared wide-eyed in shock at the conspicuous white worms that have passed out in their horses manure or have watched in annoyance as their horse rubbed its tail until it resembled a toilet brush! In the case of these two parasites, our concerns are often disproportionate to the actual threat they pose to horse health. This is especially true in the case of pinworm (Oxyurisequi), which apart from the itchiness they cause are essentially harmless. The pinworm is easily noticed in the manure because it is large (up to 10cm), white, and has a characteristic tail that tapers to a fine point - hence the name “pin” worm.
These eggs flake off into the environment or become lodged on stable or farm fixtures and are consequently ingested by the next horse. It's important to remember that there are several other conditions that which can cause horses to rub their rear ends, so just observing this behaviour does not confirm pinworm infection. Further, the eggs can't be detected in a faecal egg count because they are not deposited in the manure. How then do we tell if a horse is infected with pinworm? Well the answer is quite simple, albeit not very scientific. Oxyuris equi (pinworm) eggs glued to the perianal region.
We use sticky tape to take an impression of the perianal area and then examine it under a microscope for the presence of eggs.

It has a simple, direct life cycle which takes about 5 months to complete and the adult worm lives in the very last stretch of the colon/rectum. The female worms protrude out of the anus and glue their eggs to the skin in the perianal region - sometimes you can notice these egg “packets” which appear yellowish in colour.

Any broad spectrum wormer from any of the 3 drug classes (the Macrocyclic Lactones or “ML's”, the Benzimidazoles or “BZ's” or the tetrahydropyrimidines or “THP's”) should remove at least 90% of the adult worms. Lately there has been much discussion over the possibility of ML-resistant pinworm, but for now, there is no hard evidence to support this.
Now about the bots! These little critters do actually cause some pathology inside the horse (like lesions/ulcers at the site of attachment in the stomach), but horses usually display no symptoms at all and clinical disease as a direct result of bot infection is rare. Bot fly - close up.
Unfortunately there is no test that can alert us of a bot infection - like pinworm, there's nothing to be seen in an egg count. It's safe to assume, however, that most horses will become infected during the fly season. Basics first - there are a couple of species of bot fly, and like other flies, they are active during the warmer months of the year. This is when they are busy annoying your horse whilst laying eggs on their legs and on the hair under the jaw line. Horses ingest the eggs which hatch immediately, releasing larvae into the horse's mouth. Here they spend about 3 weeks burrowing into the soft tissue of the lips, gums and tongue before continuing on into the stomach. Bot eggs attached to horses’ forelegs.

They stay here over winter and wait for the return of favourable conditions in spring before detaching and passing out in the manure. The larvae quickly pupate down into the soil and in a couple of weeks a new generation of flies emerges ready to annoy your horses all over again. So essentially the life cycle is a year long, producing just one generation of flies. There are a couple of key control points in this life cycle - the first is to limit ingestion of eggs by removing them from the horse on a regular basis (scraping them off with a bot knife). Remember though, if you leave those eggs on the pasture they'll still be ingested by the horse. Best to scrape them off and discard them into the bin or to somewhere that horses are unlikely to access them. The next opportunity for interference is to remove the larval stages inside the horse by use of a chemical treatment (Macrocyclic Lactones Ivermectin, Abamectin and Moxidectin are effective). This is best achieved after the fly season while the larvae are “overwintering” in the stomach (late autumn / early winter).Here's the catch - because the adult stage of this parasite is a FLY, your bot control program is only as good as your neighbours! So the message to be taken from this short story is that there are far worse villains in the equine parasite world than bots and pinworms. At least at this stage we still have the armoury to treat bots and pinworms as resistance is yet to take hold. In the order of importance, bots and pinworm are well beneath the more harmful small strongyles, Parascarisequorum (roundworm of foals), and tapeworm.

Equine Canker Last time I talked about thrush, this time let's talk about canker, often confused with thrush in the beginning stages. First, what is it? Equine canker is also known in equine dermatitis texts as pododermatitis chronica verrucosa or chronic hypertrophic pododermatitis. It usually starts begins in central frog area and gradually expands to the sole and wall. There are various theories about this mysterious growth that can look very different in different horses. Canker in horses' hooves is one of the most confounding problems in equine podiatry today. One resource says: “The bacteria associated with canker causes abnormal keratin production, or overgrowth of the horn. This excess proliferation occurs underneath the horn, as the infection spreads throughout the epithelium.” Another states: “Canker is the proliferation of the corium in extremely contracted feet”. Both thrush and canker are found in the same region of the foot, but instead of the tar-like substance evident in horses with thrush, canker resembles rotten cauliflower. While thrush progressively destroys the tissue of the frog, canker appears to grow out of the bottom of the foot. Treatment with thrush medication is futile
If canker is left untreated, the horse becomes lame and the owner eventually calls the veterinarian, who may or may not have seen it before, either - but who can deduce what it probably is. Medication and topical treatments begin, but the problem may persist, and owners' resources may not extend to surgical debridement or repeated procedures. Canker is not lethal in and of itself, but because of where it occurs on the foot, and because it can be so difficult to treat and it recurs often, it can severely compromise a horse's soundness. The specific cause is (yet) There is some research that canker and sarcoids have something in common: The bovine papillomavirus DNA. Both canker and sarcoids unknown.................................................................................. often include a mixture of proliferative and erosive changes in the skin secondary to overgrowth and thickening of the tissues.

Also, similar to sarcoids, treatment efficacy appears to be lower for larger affected areas and horses that had previously undergone intensive treatment. To eliminate canker, veterinarians have tried many different medications. Suggested treatment is two-fold:..................................... 1. Superficial Debridement - First remove horn over the affected area. Make sure that you do this very superficially, because if you draw blood, infection will be driven deeper into the tissue........................................... 2. Opening the infected site to the air, and keeping it very clean and dry. Metronidazole - an antibiotic/microbial - applied topically or given systemically has worked as well. Systemically, there is no medicine that will cure canker if superficial debridement is not performed.

Many cases of canker end in frustration for owners and pain or even sometimes death for horses. Some recover, some do not. The ones who recover may do so only to experience a recurrence of the problem, causing many owners to give up. After applying any topical medication, apply a clean, dry bandage that is waterproof. Canker prefers moist conditions, so you must keep the affected area dry. Horses have variable response to treatment. Some cases heal within a week or 10 days, and some cases last for months. The owner has to treat the canker itself or leave that to a veterinarian, the hoof care provider must trim the hoof in such a way that the hoof receives optimum circulation and any existing contraction does subside. As with any problem in the horse, excellent nutrition will boost the immune system and detoxing the horse may help with the healing mechanism within the horse's body.

EQUITANA Australia Joins the Fight to Save Waler Horses EQUITANA Australia is very proud to announce that it is partnering with the Waler Horse Society of Australia, to raise awareness of the plight of the Waler Horses in Central Australia. The Waler Horse has a prestigious history and stories of their bravery and the numerous times these amazing equines saved their rider's lives have been documented in many publications; however, now they need our help. Today Waler Horses run free in Central Australia. They are rounded up on a regular basis and sent for processing as pet food. When their plight was brought to the attention of EQUITANA Australia, the team 'swung into action' and contacted the Waler Horse Society of Australia with an idea on how we could help. Elizabeth Jennings from the Society instantly saw how working with EQUITANA Australia could create a lot of awareness and hopefully encourage people to look at the Waler as a potential riding partner. Saying good bye
to your beloved horse....
This is no doubt one of the most stressful things in the role of owning horses. As a veterinarian, we are often called to put horses to sleep, and it is never an easy job emotionally, and never one to be taken lightly. Recently I had the unpleasant job of euthanasing a stallion who had really won my heart over, as I had cared for him at our clinic for weeks trying to help him recover from illness. It wasn't to be, and it really highlighted how amazing horses are, and how they get into our hearts and inspire us as owners and veterinarians to go above and beyond to try to keep them well and healthy. This stallion had amazing owners who did absolutely everything possible for him, which made it even harder saying goodbye to him. On top of this, he remained extremely stoic and kept bouncing back with positive energy from each setback. One thing owners need to realise is that there is usually not an absolute right or wrong time to say good bye and euthanase a horse. Sometimes it is absolutely clear cut, such as a horrendous injury with fractured bones exposed in the leg etc, but more often, there is decision to be made.

There are many factors to take into account such as the pain the horse is in, likelihood and time of recovery, age of the horse, future potential use of the horse, how much pain the horse will be in, the emotional attachment by the owners, the budget of the owners etc. One thing to remember when considering euthanasia, is that, so long as it is done correctly, then the situation is a lot more stressful to the owner than the horse! Another thing is to not rush into the decision, because once they are gone, they are gone for a long time! Your veterinarian can often offer good pain relief to allow time to make an informed decision. And you may be required to sign a euthanasia consent form to give your written permission to proceed. Grieving is a normal emotional path for human beings. And in this process, we as owners may experience emotions in an order such as: 1) Denial - where we cannot accept that the end is near for your beloved friend, 2) Anger - maybe at yourself in others thinking that the situation could have been prevented, 3) Bargaining - where you will do anything to prevent your horse from having to be put to sleep, 4) Depression - the sadness of realising that they are gone and 5) Acceptance - when you have dealt with the loss and ready to move on. Do other horses grieve? I believe so. We will probably never be able to prove this, but some herd mates certainly do become stressed when seeing a horse going down onto the ground through anaesthesia (when needing to lie the horse down for surgery) or euthanasis (putting to sleep forever). I personally witnessed a 4 year mare of mine, who was present for the euthanasia and burial of her dam, stand at the grave for 3 days. Exactly what she was thinking will puzzle me forever. Techniques to euthanase a horse include lethal injection, captive bolt or use of a firearm. Your veterinarian will usually have a preference for one over another. Any of these methods are fine if done correctly, and the horse will know nothing about the process. It must be remembered that if lethal injection (an overdose of anaesthetic) is used, then the body needs to be buried or burnt immediately to prevent predators such as eagles, dingoes, neighbours dogs etc from eating the carcase and ingesting the lethal medication in the blood stream. Preparation for the euthanasia. Consideration needs to be given to things such as how will the remaining horses in the paddock be, who should be present at the procedure, when should it be done etc. It is ideal to co-ordinate a backhoe operator to dig the hole prior to putting the horse to sleep or immediately after it is done. Then burial as soon as possible after they are put to sleep. Who and when should be present. This varies a lot between owners, and there is no real right or wrong.

It can be a real life lesson for them, and a “dress rehearsal� for the pain and grief of losing a loved human family member later on in life. Personally, I like to have the horse as stress free as possible when putting them to sleep. I often either sedate the horse first or allow it to eat a bucket of its favourite feed or carrots as I administer the lethal injection through a large bore needle or catheter. I use a muscle relaxant as well as the anaesthetic overdose, which means the horse is unconscious before it collapses, and then usually doesn't move after it hits the ground. Saying good bye to your beloved horse will never be an easy process, and it will always be harder on you than it will be on the horse you are protecting from further suffering. Owners will always miss their horse, but often they feel great relief once they have said goodbye and grieved for a period of time.

Float Loading Taking a thorough approach to the education needed in preparing your horse for loading and travelling reduces the risk of injury to your horse and yourself by promoting safety through trust and clear understanding. To avoid the nightmare stories of float loading you will need to ask your horse to accept and understand different pressures, requiring a basic level of education - so don't make float loading their first education! Teaching them to understand different pressures on the ground will help you to position your horse precisely and smoothly in the float. With horse training, education is simply help. So no matter what you are asking your horse, you need to approach it in a helpful manner. Some thoughts that I always have in my head to keep my judgement fair and consistent are: What happened? Why? What's needed? & How can I help?
Before loading, try to address these points: - Soft leading & backing It is very important that your horse understands how to soften and follow the lead rope. You want your horse calm and relaxed when the lead rope pressure tightens. You don't want them to brace and jump forward, so when you teach your horse to lead and understand pole pressure you should not use too much force - just regular repetitions that focus on forward thought and softness. If your horse can walk forward responsively and softly they should also be able to back up softly and calmly. If they are not comfortable backing, do a lot of it until your horse finds it easy. - Calm Standing If your horse has very sensitive areas, or is still frightened of you when If you are not giving your horse a cue to do anything in particular, they you stand in different positions around them, they will only be worse should be very happy and able to just stand calmly. - Moving Sideways When you are inside a tight float in between a few horses, you need to know that your horses won't stiffen and lie against pressure. Horses are often nervous in a float and will brace, not wanting to move across easily, so the slightest resistance in sideways pressure may well be exacerbated inside a float. Aim to be able to get in close to your horse and move them across or sideways. You should be able to put your hand on their hip and gently ask them to step across softly. Their shoulders should respond similarly. - Send your horse past your shoulder This is very similar to sending a horse out to lunge. If you ask your horse to step past your shoulder and go out in front of you, your horse should calmly walk past you on your cue. If your horse feels rushed or nervous, then you should repeat this until they have calm energy and show no sign of stress.

Your horse has to be well handled from the top of its tail down to its back feet. Once your horse feels safe to a stick and to your hands I like to put a breaching rope on. It is simply just a looped rope that I can apply controlled pressure to their butt with. Once they are calm with the rope I like to back them a few steps and then gently pull the butt rope until they step forward. Repeat this until your horse is happy with the butt rope anywhere between the tail and the hocks and will calmly step forward, one step at a time and without fear.

l This is not a speed lesson. It is about trust and consistency and safety. Take as much time as your horse needs to get it right. l To practise and test leading and tying, I sometimes get a long lead rope (over 7m) and stand my horse some distance away from a rail, put the lead rope over the rail and walk off at an angle behind my horse before putting pressure on the rope and asking my horse to lead up to the rail. l You can also lead your horse over ramps, through garden archways, in and out of sheds and other unusual objects, familiarising them with what you will be asking them to do in a float and practising overcoming any resistance - this is your chance to cement your role as leader. l For your first few trips, after unloading ask your horse to walk straight back in, stand and then unload again.

www.equinenews.com.au l A small dark float will be more claustrophobic to a horse than one which has a big window at the front and which feels more open. Just because your horse loaded easily on one float doesn't necessarily guarantee they will on another. Horses will react very differently to floats which feel like a box. l For certain horses, especially ones that have quite a strong separation anxiety, it is wise to travel with a calm companion for a while. Aim to wean them at some stage. l Some horses need more room to spread their feet out; I have come across horses that travelling on their own with the centre bar to one side has no issues but travelling with the centre bar in place, leads to them scrambling with every pot hole and corner. l For training use your normal halter but for floating stick to a good, strong, thick web-halter that will not cut/rub/break if they panic. l Some rubber floors become slippery with urine and manure - just a small slip on a floor can panic a horse. Dry wood shavings may help. l In straight load floats, tie up to the lower ring with enough slack so your horse is free to lower its head but short enough to prevent them from turning their head back or getting their nose behind the chest bar. l Don't tie your horse until your breaching bars/ dividers are secured. l Horses with limited handling are safer travelled in an open, cattle type truck. Leave floating until they have had more education.

When should I start giving my horse
JOINT SUPPLEMENTS? By Jane Clothier - Balanced Horse Walk into any saddlery or produce store and you'll see at least a couple of joint supplements containing glucosamine and chondroitin on the shelves. Look at an online store and you'll see dozens. It's obviously big business, which doesn't mean it's a bad business, but it does show that a lot of horse owners are buying and using joint supplements. This leads to the question: how do you know if your horse would benefit from them? And how do you know when to start using them? The joint supplements on the market are typically targeted at horses with osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative joint disease (DJD). As with people, this affects all ageing horses eventually, largely due to the normal wear and tear process that affects the joints.
Quite simply, the more weight a horse is carrying, the greater the stress on its joints is going to be. The kindest thing you can do with any horse suffering osteoarthritis in its joints is to ensure its weight is kept to a healthy level.
To describe a complicated process very, very simply indeed: the aging joint gradually loses its lubricating fluid and the cartilage that facilitates smooth movement. This leads to abrasion, which causes inflammation and pain. The aggravated bone responds by laying down more bone calcification - and the joint's range of motion is gradually reduced. The most recognised sites for DJD in horses, in that they are visually obvious to the owner, are the fetlocks, knees or hocks. This is because the reduced flexion and action due to pain is noticeable in the ridden and the unridden horse. It can, of course, occur in any joint of the limbs, as well as the spine. Frequently it is classified under different veterinary terms: for example, ringbone is calcification in the lower pastern joint, while bone spavin is the lower joints of the hock.
Beyond the veterinary products, there is an enormous range of supplements and treatments out there. Again, it's important to note that peoples' experiences of these and their success levels vary enormously. A number of studies have now shown that 'neutraceutical' agents, such as glucosamine and chondroitin, do have a beneficial effect when taken in the right amount, especially on horses with mild osteoarthritis. Why do success levels vary so enormously? It's partly due to the quality of the materials used in the products - glucosamine is derived from shellfish and, in particular, the green-lipped mussel - and partly the relative proportions of the ingredients. Additionally, some products suit some horses while others don't. Knowing when to start giving supplements comes down to your knowledge of the horse's history, and observation and awareness.
There are many causes of DJD, the most common of which is advancing age. Many owners will notice this as a gradually increasing stiffness in their horse's motion, particularly on cold wintry mornings. Other people may notice a lack of softness in the paces when ridden. While we can recognise and even expect the condition to be present in horses in, say, their late teens, it is far harder to predict when it is going to start or to recognise when it has started. Other life events may trigger the beginnings of osteoarthritis. An injury, even in youth, can cause tissue breakdown to start within a joint that is either damaged or that is loaded incorrectly, due to the horse having shifted its posture while recovering. Calcification often follows. Infections can also cause some unusual tissue reactions that lead to degeneration. As this kind of process begins to occur, the owner may notice the horse being a bit weak on one leg, or stepping short, without actually being lame. Stiffness and lameness do, of course, have many causes, so if you suspect an issue, it's sensible to embark on a process of elimination before deciding it's DJD, involving your vet if necessary. Physical examination may help to confirm the problem, while nerve blocks will isolate the location and radiographs (x-rays) will clarify how advanced it is. It's true that nothing will reverse or cure DJD, but it is possible to alleviate the effects. At the “heavy artillery� end is the non-steroidal antiinflammatory (NSAID), such as phenylbutazone ('bute'), although not many owners would wish to give this long-term. Alternatively, there is a monthly injection of Sodium Pentosan Polysulfate ('Pentosan'), which is an anti-inflammatory that also promotes tissue repair. It is available from the vet and suits advanced cases.
A history of injuries, or the visible signs of old injury - such as scarring on the hocks, knees or fetlocks - can give you some clues.Remember that injury in one limb may lead to DJD in that joint, but it may also lead to DJD in another that has been overloaded for years due to postural changes. Also, think about your horse's breed and usage. For instance, many Arabians maintain structural health well into their 20s, whereas many ex-racehorses suffer joint issues from their early teens, due to having worked intensively, and not always sympathetically, when very young. Some lines of warmbloods are also highly susceptible to joint problems such as osteochondritis dessicans (OCD), in which lesions form in the articular cartilage and the underlying subchondral bone, which in turn leads to DJD. Conformation is also important. Horses with straight hind limbs are more likely to develop 'bone spavin', aka. DJD, in the lower hock joints. Likewise, horses with angular issues of the forelimb are more likely to develop DJD in the knees (although angular limb deformities are not always conformational). Any physical imbalance in the limbs can lead to arthritic issues, including those caused by hoof imbalance through poor hoof care.
Being aware of your horse's condition can extend into being 'hands-on'. Just lifting the horse's legs can tell you a lot. Does the horse snatch a particular foot away, every time it's lifted? Or does one leg feel a lot heavier. These may be warning signs - again, it's important to eliminate the many other possible causes before deciding it's DJD. He has owned and operated “Almosta Ranch” in Scottsdale, Arizona since 1970 and his training and competition expertise has elevated him to great success around the world. “Almosta Ranch” is now the centre of a dynamic horse community, offering world class cutting horses for sale, as well as expert horse training. Al Dunning has earned the undisputed title of one of the world's greatest horse and rider trainers. He and his students have won 34 World and Reserve World titles in AQHA, NRHA, NRCHA, and NCHA. In addition, Al conducts clinics worldwide and has recently developed Team AD International, an online training program and trade school for western horseman. He has won numerous awards for his contribution to various equine associations, within the community, and for the books and articles he has authored including: - “The Ultimate Level of Horsemanship”, “Reining” and “Reining Completely Revised”.
