We also have input from Dan Steers of Double Dan Horsemanship who has offered us some help in the way of going about introducing the bit and mouthing our horses. Part 2 of this article will be featured in our following Autumn 2014 issue. A horse owners story is also included sharing the journey of investigating an unexplained illness that there seemed no clear answer for but through determined and persistent testing could be the first documented case of Equine Lyme Disease in Australia. Weight loss is a condition that many horse owners have had to deal with at one time or another. A horse that appears thin may be suffering from weight loss due to a number of causes. However there are three common causes of weight loss in horses: malnutrition, parasitism and dental disease. If a horse is suffering from malnutrition then the number of calories it is consuming is less than the number it is using, it may also suffer from an incorrectly balanced diet. Causes of this include feeding poor quality feed, supplying inadequate amounts of feed or the horse maybe missing out on feed due to competition at feeding time.................................................... Parasites can rob your horse of much needed nutrition as the parasites consume the nutrients or cause inflammation of the horse's gut leading to poor absorption of nutrients across the gut wall. Dental problems can decrease your horses FCR or Food Conversion Ratio this is a measure of how efficient your horse is at converting feed into energy. The first two steps in digestion are prehension or picking up the feed and mastication or chewing. Any change in the efficiency of these two steps has a direct effect on the efficiency of the rest of the digestive process, as the rest of the digestive tract is only as efficient as these two steps. In severe cases loose, fractured or infected teeth can cause a horse to stop eating all together. There are many other causes of weight loss in the horse, however the three covered above are the most common and should always be addressed when assessing a horse for weight loss. Other causes of weight loss can include but are not limited to tumours, disease of major organs such as the kidneys or liver, issues affecting hormone levels, inflammation of the intestine, chronic infection and stomach ulcers. A useful tool in evaluating and reassessing weight loss in horses is to use a body condition scoring system. There are two main systems used one system grades horses from 1-5 with 1 being very poor condition and 5 being obese the other system grades horses from 1-9. The key difference between the two systems is the greater degree of accuracy of the 1-9 system. ................................................................................. Another tool that can help is the use of weight tapes although bear in mind that these are not always very accurate, alternatively if you are lucky you may live in an area where you vet or racetrack have digital scales you can use to weigh your horse more accurately.

While we are discussing weight loss in horses we should also talk about the dangers of a horse being too heavy. The same risks posed to people by being obese apply to our horses as well as a few of their own. Overweight horses have increased pressure on their joints and vital organs and are at risk of metabolic syndrome, which has been identified as a cause of laminitis (inflammation of the sensitive structures connecting the hoof wall to the pedal bone)............................................. Overweight horses need a decreased calorie intake often combined with an increase in exercise.

He has been involved in equine dental workshops for veterinarians and veterinary students, as well as seeing both general and referral dental cases. His career taken him through New Zealand, USA, Russia, and the eastern states of Australia. He was veterinarian to Monty Roberts (the man who listens to horses), and has appeared on TV alongside Dr Harry on Better Homes and Gardens. Ear Mites IN HORSES By Dr Oliver Liyou BVSc (Hons1) MACVSc (Eq Dent) CMAVA.
One of the most poorly understood and managed conditions in horses is itching of the head, ears and mane. You will hear a zillion so-called cures for these conditions, which means that no one treatment fixes all itches and it continues to be an extremely frustrating problem for horse owners. Ear Mites (Psoroptes Equi - pictured above) are just one of the possible causes of horses that scratch their head and necks.
Ear Mites are small insects, white in colour, and less than 1 mm in size, so are just visible to the naked eye. They invade the ears of horses and can cause intense itching, and rubbing of the neck and ears. Sometimes the ear will droop, due to intense itching, even to a point where it gets bruised so badly that a fills up with blood and needs surgery.
Other causes of itching of the face, head and mane include:
(1) Allergies to Culicoides - biting midges (Queensland Itch) - by far the most common. (2) Allergies to dietary proteins or environmental allergens such as grass seeds, pollens, dust etc. (3) Lice. (4) Fungal infections. (5) Bacterial infections. (6) Reactions to the dying larvae of the neck thread worm onchocerca - following worming with a “mectin� compound wormer. But these lesions are usually under the neck, chest and body regions, as opposed to on top of the neck and poll region.
Lesions on ears and neck
Diagnosis of ear mites can be done by visually inspecting the inside of the ear, with a light and magnifying glass. Or by inserting a gloved finger deep into the ear (most horses don't like this, so best done when horse sedated), and rubbing against the inner ear's skin, and then examining the wax that comes out on the finger. If ear mites are present, they will emerge from the wax as tiny white specs that are brilliantly white, but move slowly on the surface of the wax. But the reality with ear mites is that they are not common any more, mainly due to the widespread use of ivermectin wormers, which kill the mites, as they suck blood from the skin inside the ears.
So this takes us back to the other causes of itching of the head and neck regions of a horse. Allergies (to biting culicoides species midges or pollens, dust etc.) are very common and seem more prevalent in some breeds such as Clydesdales. There is often no real cure apart from moving the horse to an area with no midges such as west of the Great Dividing Range. The frustrating thing is the allergy and itching may start on a horse at any age, from yearling to middle age. The allergic itching response is an inappropriate reaction of the horse's immune system, so it can vary from year to year, and also with the amount of allergens (insects, pollens etc.) that the horse comes into contact with. It is important to rule out the more treatable conditions such as lice, fungal and bacterial infections before treating allergies, as the treatment and management of allergies is often quite exhaustive and expensive. The ideal way to diagnose allergic skin disease in horses is through ruling out other causes via close examination, skin scrapings, fungal cultures, cytology and microscopic examination etc., and then doing a skin biopsy. Intra dermal skin testing or blood allergy tests can be done as well, but this is more a job for an equine skin specialist.

Management of allergic skin disease in horses can be divided into 3 main components: A) Preventing the horses getting access to the allergen - e.g. moving it to another area, using insect repellents, rugging the horse (not before it has stopped itching though as it will often rip the rug to pieces!), putting horse under a low roof (midges don't like going under low roof) from 2 pm onwards when the midges start biting, having the horse able to stand in front of a big fan from 2 pm onwards (midges are poor fliers so will get blown away from the horse in front of fan).

Use of oils on the skin may create a barrier to which the midges don't want to bite through etc. Midges usually bite only along the top line, so create itchiness on the ear, mane and tail region. Feeding of substances such as sulphur, garlic, apple cider vinegar, salt bush, herbal tonics etc. all are reported at times to help, but very few of them have been scientifically tested, so it is hard to recommend them before adequate testing has been done. It amazes me how much resistance there was to the declared lack of testing of the Hendra Vaccine, yet owners will happily feed and pour on their horses a massive range of untested and unproven tonics, additives, herbs etc. that are available for sale for use on horses??? B) Modifying the horse's immune response to the allergen e.g. high doses (up to half a cup morning and night) of omega 3 oils will help 1 in 4 itchy horses. Corticosteroid injections, granules in feed or creams will also reduce the inflammatory response and thus help “dampen or even stop” the itchiness whilst it is on the medication. This may be helpful to allow you to rug the horse to prevent it being bitten, and stop the horse tearing the rug up. C) Preventing the horse from itching on posts, trees and fences. Firm itching actually often causes more damage to the skin and thus more itchiness as a result of the “itching chemicals” being released in the damaged skin. This is referred to as the “itch-scratch cycle”.
Rugging your horse may prevent it being bitten
Electric fences can help here, but it must be stressed that this technique should not be done without heavy use of A and B, or the horse will be so frustrated that it will revert to rubbing itself along the ground like a dog!!! Many allergic skin diseases in horses are seasonal, and so affect the horse more in spring and summer, and reduce in severity through winter, when there are less insects and pollens around etc. If it is dietary allergy, then it may be year round.

If your horse is only scratching its tail, and not mane and ears, you should consider the possibility of it having pin worms. (Oxyuris Equi) Pin worms (fig 4) are not blood sucking worms, so usually don't cause too much illness in horses like some other worms, but they cause an itchy tail. And because they don't suck blood from the bowel wall, they can be harder to kill than other worms, and often need a wormer with pyrantel or morantel in them. Such wormers include Strategy T or Ammo.

The classic sign of pin worm is the yellowy green paste around the anus, which is “laid� by the female worm (fig 5) and contains thousands of eggs. You can put a piece of sticky tape across this and examine it under the microscope and you will see thousands of eggs!
So when the horse rubs its tail on a rail, the eggs are deposited on the rail, waiting for a curious horse to come and lick or muzzle the rail, and then they start a new life cycle in that horse!

So the coffin bone that is not ground parallel is rotated, but how does it separate from the hoof wall to be diagnosed as founder?
Sentence?
First the coffin bone is ground parallel and parallel to the wall. (#2) There is a tight laminar connection and the circumflex artery runs open around the distal end of the coffin bone. (#2a) Upon weight bearing the pressure from the bone column, especially the short pastern bone, pushes in the middle of the coffin joint. (#2b

In the last issue I talked about laminitis. Today I want to share with you what I know about founder.
H
ow does founder occur? The anatomy of the hoof taught us that there is no space in the hoof capsule, it is a really tight situation. How can the coffin bone all of a sudden rotate away from the hoof wall? Well, it does not all of a sudden rotate away from the wall. Rather the rotation happens gradually and is always the result of incorrect bone alignment, which means high heels and often high bars in connection with high heels. High heels result in a steep alignment of P2 and P1 and a rotated coffin bone. Now, unlike the conventional world, we talk about a rotated coffin bone when the coffin bone is out of its ground parallel position. That does not necessarily mean that the coffin bone is separated from the hoof wall.

Then the heel(s) gets higher and there is a very slight rotation with separation. (#3) The laminar connection is really stretched, the high heels aggravate the situation, and the circumflex artery is pinched shut at the tip, resulting in inferior horn production in that area. (#3a) Upon weight bearing the pressure from the bone column, especially the short pastern bone, pushes in more towards the extensor process, which aggravates the rotational force with every step. As there is now more pressure on the toe than on the heel, the heel grows faster than the toe and we see severe rotation with separation. (#4) The laminar connection is further stretched, the circumflex artery is pinched shut, and destruction of the coffin bone tip is most likely. #4a) Upon weight bearing the pressure from the bone column, especially the short pastern bone, pushes now mostly onto the extensor process. (#4b)

This cycle repeats itself and may be purely mechanical. The horse develops gradually a shorter stride, usually so gradual that the owner does not notice it. The question is if the shorter stride comes from the faulty bone alignment or actual pain. That is always hard to ascertain as horses try to hide the pain, have no sound for it and avoid being detected (by some predator) as a valid next meal. Now, why was that important to know in all details?............................ Because it is possible to have rotation and even separation without clear “founder” signs. The “all-of-a-sudden” onset of founder has been a long time in the making.................................................................................... It may be possible to see in a clear x-ray the beginning destruction of the tip of the coffin bone. But the destruction or change in bone has to be considerable (about 60%) in order to be visible in an x-ray.

If the horse is shod, the vaulted sole does not flex upon weight bearing. The coffin bone can only rotate slowly through the lack of sole growth under the tip of the coffin bone. As soon as the solar vault can flex through the removal of the shoe and trimming, the coffin bone will rotate immediately, because the laminar attachment is already compromised through the vibrations of the shoe. In this position the tip of the coffin bone has even more pressure and therefore bone substance will diminish very fast. This development happens over quite some time, sometimes months, sometimes years, depending on how steep the hoof is, how much it deviates from the correct coffin bone position, how much the horse moves and on which terrain he moves (concussive or nonconcussive). The stretching of the lamellae is often connected with bruising and wound secretion. When trimming you may see red wound secretion in the white line. (#6)

When the frontal area of the lamellar connection becomes stretched and the coffin bone begins to rotate, the lamellar connection in the lateral areas becomes compromised as well. The lateral lamellae become stretched or twisted, depending on the tightness of the hoof capsule. The horn tubules in frontal area of the hoof become compressed, especially at the top of the coronet band (picture), as they are under constant pressure.
Separation of the coffin bone does not necessarily happen symmetrically either. Depending on the forces in the hoof the one or the other side may be more compromised. (#7)

Restoring compromised hooves like these takes more than just good trimming. As a hoof care provider you have to have a very clear picture where you want to trim to distribute the load of the bone column more evenly. You have to consider abrasion of the hoof wall on one side and accelerated growth through inflammation on the other side. You have to be clear what will rebuild the tissues. In order to rebuild bone, you need tension on the existing bone, which may not occur without pain. In order to have the hoof rebuild a tight lamellar connection, you have to have the right nutrients available to the body through excellent nutrition, you have to have the vitality of the horse at an optimum by ensuring an absence of toxins and emotional stress, and you have to ensure that the lamellar connection does not receive any further mechanical stresses like vibrations through metal shoes or hard ground.
Acute painful founder....................................................................... You learned about the connection of the lamellae to the hoof wall, about rotation and separation and how separation happens slowly, over time. In these hooves lack of circulation does prevent the building of good horn substance and also prevents the supply of oxygen for the Adenosine Tri Phosphate (ATP) production which is crucial for nerve function. So the horse is rotated and separated and still somehow moving. Some horses move under these circumstances better than others, in general, they do not show too much of the already existing damage.................................... This begs the question: When does acute, painful founder happen? Acute founder (rotation with separation) requires a trigger. The cause is usually a change in the metabolism. That may be a high sugar content of spring pasture (or after the pasture has been freshly mowed). It may be a chemical w o r m e r, v a c c i n a t i o n s o r i n j e c t i o n s o f o t h e r pharmaceuticals.Changes in feed or a sudden starch overload also may be the culprit. Another possibility is mechanical founder, an inflammation of the lamellae after stressful movement.

Every time there is an insult to the entire system of the horse, the weakest link (in this case the compromised hoof) will show the most reaction. It then may look as if this insult was the cause for the founder, but this was a long time in the making. Steep hooves, unphysiological pressure on the frontal lamellar corium, unnatural living all lead over time to a breakdown of the system. The "trigger" is just the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back. Should the acute trigger happen in a horse with correct hoof form, then the laminitis is still very painful, but after some movement and a few very uncomfortable days, the healing process will begin and the horse is usually after a few weeks fully usable again.

Equine News Summer 2013 Before commencing mouthing a horse there is a need to ensure it has a basic understanding of ground control exercises - performed in the halter which would include lateral flexion, hindquarter control, side passing and circling. These exercises will introduce softness in the halter and therefore a willing partner with which to start the mouthing lessons. Starting a horse for something as important as mouthing without first introducing it to basic ground control exercises, such as the Double Dan Horsemanship level 1, would be like asking the horse to do flying changes before it could even strike off on the correct canter lead, and would create confusion because the basics were not established.

In the first part of this two part article series on mouthing the young horse the initial one rein lateral education will be discussed. These exercises need to be performed in a roundyard. “To allow full utilisation of this method of education, specific gear is required, which includes a bridle with a full mouth bit, large D ring or a sleeve ring and preferably 5/8� thickness mouth piece. This will make the horse more comfortable with the exercise by allowing more even pressure to be applied to the side of its mouth, plus it will reduce the risk of the bit pulling through the mouth. The long rein used is 10mm diameter yachting rope in an 8m length with a knot at the end piece to be fastened to the bit or roller. And the final piece of equipment is a roller, which has strong rings and multiple adjustments. The first step is to introduce the bridle. To prepare for this, teach the horse to lower its head while it is still in the halter. This is done by downwards halter pressure and release the pressure immediately the horse gives to the pressure. Continue this exercise until it understands what is being asked. This will make it easier to place the bridle in the horse's mouth when it comes time. Make sure both the horse's ears can be rubbed without resistance before placing the bridle on, and check the bridle will be roughly the right size for the horse - any further adjustments can be made once it is on. To teach the horse to understand it is required to open its mouth for the bit, gently place a thumb in the corner of the mouth and softly wiggle it until the horse opens its mouth. Place one hand over the top of the horse's head and use the other hand to guide the bit into its mouth. Once the horse has accepted the bit in its mouth gently pull it over the ears and into place. Ensure that the bit is fitting comfortably in the horse's mouth before progressing.

A horse needs to be supple through the head and neck, ribcage, shoulders and hind quarters and to aid in true softness in the vertical (up and down) for collection and asking for a frame; it does need to be soft to lateral flexion (side to side). The next step is to teach the horse to yield to pressure on the ground by standing at its shoulder and asking it to bend its nose around with a single rein connected to the bit. This is achieved with gentle, gradual pressure and release. The horse needs to be rewarded for its effort, no matter how small that effort, as long as it is what it is being asked for. Initially the rein may be released when the nose bends off centre in the direction that you are asking. With repetitions the horse should be expected to bring its nose all the way around to its shoulder.

www.equinenews.com.au The rein must only be released when there is no weight or resistance from the horse, as this is what encourages softness, rather than the horse been rewarded for leaning against the bit. A good indicator that the horse is responding well is when the rein is released and the horse hesitates before returning its head to the centre position, rather than snatching its head away from the rein contact.
17 With the horse in the roundyard, a single long rein needs to be attached to the top ring of the roller at the wither, then it runs down to the bit and through to the lowest ring on the roller. Once set up, the horse is asked to walk around the outside of the roundyard - with the rein on the inside - by stepping behind the line of its shoulder and creating forward impulsion by using a driving or lunge whip behind the horse. Once it is walking freely around the yard the contact on the rein is taken up gently and the horse's nose is asked to come to the inside of the circle. Wait until the horse comes to a complete standstill with its nose flexed off centre and then it can be approached at its shoulder while even pressure is maintained on the rein. Taking hold of the lower rein, ask the horse to take its nose to its shoulder, as previously practiced, and release when it follows the rein and gives its nose with no pressure in the bit.
This process can be repeated on both sides until the horse has a firm understanding that it needs to give to one rein pressure. If the horse moves its feet during this exercise then maintain the pressure on the rein, move with the horse - staying next to its shoulder - and then only release the rein as a reward when the horse is standing still with its head softly flexed to the side.
ONE REIN STOP Once confident that the horse has an understanding of this lateral flexion it is then time to teach the one rein stop from a walk.

If the horse initially spins around when the flexion is first asked of it and it becomes tangled within the long rein, release the rein and allow the horse to free itself. The horse then needs to be immediately approached at the shoulder and the flexion needs to be asked from a standstill, as it does not as yet have a solid understanding of what it is being asked.

Once the horse is comfortable with the slight lateral flexion of the nose coming off centre at the walk, ask the horse for full lateral flexion of nose before the horse is approached at the shoulder. The rein must always be manually released from the shoulder to ensure the horse does not learn to snatch the rein away to gain release from the pressure. Once the horse is stopping solidly from a walk and going both directions in the round yard more can be asked of it. Start the horse trotting on the circle and then ask for the one rein stop to the inside from a trot. As it becomes more confident with this, the lateral flexion can be asked more abruptly to simulate the pressure that would be placed on the horse if the one rein stop was needed during riding e.g. if it gets a fright and attempts to bolt or buck. This exercise can then be taken to the next step by asking for the one rein stop from the canter.

When working with young horses I have found they are more balanced in a trot but I like to ask them to move out at a canter. These exercises teach the horse to yield from bit pressure rather than lean and resist. An Owners Journey with Equine Lyme Disease Introduction Lyme Borreleosis, or Lyme disease, is caused by various subspecies of Borrelia burgdoferi bacteria. Lyme disease is tick-borne, and a bite from an infected tick transfers the bacteria to humans and animals, including horses. For horses, the symptoms of Lyme disease mimic a combination of more commonly encountered illnesses and traumas. Symptoms may include stiffness, swollen joints, shifting lameness, muscle tenderness, behavioural changes and increased sensitivity to sensory stimuli. Other neurological disorders, as well as ocular disorders such as uveitis, are also reported. It is plausible, therefore, that Lyme disease remains largely underdiagnosed. Continual misdiagnosis of symptoms will lead to a chronic case of Lyme that is difficult to treat. If caught early, however, the prognosis for full recovery is good. Treatment is relatively straightforward, using readily available antibiotics. Diagnosing Lyme disease in horses, however, remains controversial. Not all horses infected with Borrelia show clinical symptoms, and blood tests may or may not be useful in detecting Lyme disease. Until more research is done, part of the diagnosis and the decision to treat for Lyme will need to rely on intuition and horse sense.

The following is the story of my young mare, as we journey together to understand and resolve what may be the first documented case of a possible equine Lyme disease in Australia. My young mare went through most of the symptoms described in this article before the tender age of 3, when she should be enjoying a carefree life of a youngster. The journey for us is far from over, and only time will tell whether the treatment will be a success. The intention of this article is not to pinpoint Lyme as the culprit of all vague and unexplained 'unwellness' and 'mishaviour' in horses. It is written in hopes that its awareness will provide horse owners other avenues for investigation where the more familiar possibilities have been exhausted. Most importantly, I hope it will encourage all horse owners to diligently keep a record of their horse's health and psychological wellbeing, as it might come in handy as it did for me.
A Road Less Travelled She was always the odd one out in a small herd of youngsters. Dull coat, an incidence of unexplained hind leg tremor, uveitis-like syndrome blamed at the time on an old corneal scar, general gait stiffness and on and off right hind lameness accompanied by swelling of the hock joint and below. Then there were the little things such as positions that would worry her when being trimmed and unexplained twitchiness about some joints when being body worked. But she showed no aggression, choosing instead to walk away or use her weight to make her point. We shrugged this off as something that she will psychologically overcome, given time and training. And it just may be what it is, yet it might not be.

At first, I insisted on vet visits for each significant incident, and each visit ended with practical recommendations to treat the symptoms and monitor. With most cases, she improved and seemingly recovered. There was no need to dig deeper. But as the number of such incidences - both recurring and new - grew, I knew that it was well beyond the law of probability: how can one horse be singled out for so many issues? Something was definitely wrong. But my mind reasoned me to monitor a little longer. I decided to scrutinise the management of the herd. I double-checked my feeding program, tested their water for any toxins, revisited my worming strategy, quarantined any new horses for a fortnight, and made sure all vaccinations were up to date, including Hendra. All horses were trimmed every 5 weeks, rugged for insect protection and checked daily for ticks. In the meanwhile, the normally laid back and gentle mare was becoming irritable and a little intimidating. She bit an unsuspecting bystander on the chin (my unlucky husband), and launched an attack on the household dog. She became increasingly sensitive to being groomed on her near side and she twitched when she felt our hand touch the sides of her face. The rugs started to consistently slip to the left as she shaped her body to attain a position of comfort under their weight.

20 But there were days or weeks at a time when she seemed better. On those days, I gently worked her from the ground, mostly at a walk. Even then, I found her somewhat reluctant, and the performance variable. On some days, her hind end engaged effortlessly, and on others, she just resisted all efforts towards a square halt. So after a while, I took the hint and left her in the paddock to take an indefinite holiday. The spring winds brought her to a new state of sensitivity. She remained on high alert and shied at seemingly nothing. Even the dangling belly straps on her rug became threatening enough to consider bolting off. Although first startled, her paddock mates eventually learned to ignore her. Then suddenly, she had another inflammatory attack, this time on her left hind. It was a significant departure from the usual pattern: for the past 2 years, the problem had always been her right hind, fuelling the speculation that it was some sort of a paddock trauma with micro tearing that continued to have setbacks towards its full recovery. But this time, it was her left. I analysed the situation. She was not in work, so it could not be work induced. She was not nursing any stiffness, so it could not be strain of a compensatory nature. I looked to the paddock for clues. Although generally the type that likes to remain 'parked', she hypes herself during herd rampage and launches her massive frame into the air like an Airbus A380 - a reminder of her lineage of grand-prix jumpers. But the grounds gave no indication of such activity. I was concerned that it might even be an unfortunate kick from her paddock mate, but such fear disappeared in a few days along with the inflammation. Then, as with most mornings, I found myself scrutinising the mare from a distance and contemplating the situation. As I stood there, the information in my mind combined to take shape, and I suddenly knew what to do. I found myself calling our horse vet to ask whether we can conduct a blood test - one that will specifically include Lyme. In all honesty, I was not sure if my request would go down well. Has there ever been a documented case of equine Lyme in Australia? I was well aware of its controversial nature for human cases.
Equine News Summer 2013 On the other hand, I was quite comfortable that the clinical symptoms of equine Lyme could explain all of my mare's health history. My vet patiently heard me out, and agreed to test for Lyme. He also suggested a general blood test, as well as tests to cover other viral and bacterial diseases that may cause one or more of the past symptoms. Lyme-myopia was setting in thick and fast, so it was a brilliant suggestion. Several weeks later, we had the full results. Blood biochemistry and haematology was normal. She was negative for leptospirosis, which may have otherwise explained her uveitis. There were many other creepy crawlies she tested negative for. But she came back positive for both Ross River Virus (previous exposure, not active infection) and Lyme. It is quite common for horses in endemic regions to have full immunity and therefore test positively for Ross River Virus without ever having been detected in the past. For those horses that succumb to significant clinical symptoms upon infection, it may take many months, even years, for them to build up full immunity. Until such time, symptoms associated with Ross River Virus may recur, especially in times of stress. It was difficult to gauge the extent of its relevance in my mare's case: Ross River Virus could potentially explain some of the symptoms my mare had been experiencing, such as recurring stiffness and swollen joints; On the other hand, she may already have attained full immunity. There is no medication to eradicate the virus, so there was not much we could do either way. Lyme, however, is treatable. This means the possibility of confirming or disproving the diagnosis by observing the response to treatment. We therefore explored the implications of her Lyme test. The Lyme blood tests are known to be notoriously unreliable indicators, producing false positives, and more often, false negatives. The reasons are numerous, including the fact that there is no central body that controls the standard of the tests, as well as the ability for Lyme bacteria to hide from the horse's immune system (less antibodies, thereby resulting in a false negative). As an effort to build validity, therefore, the gold standard is to undertake at least 2 blood tests based on different methodologies. So we sent off a request to the US for more testing, although it may be 6 weeks or more before we get the full results.

In the pursuit of 'truth', pre-diagnostic work can become a drawn-out affair. To avoid unnecessarily delays in treatment, however, it is the onus of the owners to draw timely conclusions with the help of their vets. Significant insights can be gained by triangulating test results, the clinical symptoms and measures taken to eliminate other possible causes without pursuing each to the umpteenth degree. To this effect, and even before we had the results of the additional blood tests, we took faith in the information we amassed, and started my mare on an initial 6-week treatment for Lyme, consisting of 3 different antibiotics. She has been on the antibiotics for the past 5 weeks and the signs are encouraging. For each new course of antibiotics, she presented with inflammation on different parts of her legs and patchy sweating on different parts of her body. This is consistent with the Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction, well documented in human Lyme cases. It is the body's response to endotoxins released by a mass of dying bacteria. We continue to monitor her closely. She is becoming more social and less flighty under windy conditions. She is no longer so sensitive around her head. Is it Lyme? Possibly. Will she be cured? I hope so.

Horses locked stifle
Locking stifles can vary in the range of severity - a horse with a mild case may simply trip or stumble very now and again, whereas more severe cases can result in a horse being unable to flex a hind leg and having to drag the offending limb. The precise cause is still unknown, but it is believed that there are several contributing factors including poor conformation, lack of muscle strength in the hind quarters, and it could also be due to hereditary conditions.. Through evolution, horses are able to 'lock' their legs so that they are able to sleep standing, which in the wild would ensure that they could run away quickly from predators. The problem of a locking stifle occurs when the patella (knee cap) is unable to 'un-lock', meaning that the patella is fixed in an upwards position. Understandably this can panic a horse, so it is important to remain calm and confident when dealing with a horse with this problem............................................................. There are several treatment options for a locking stifle, and although surgery is currently the only cure, there are plenty of options to help reduce the risk of an episode. Generally helping to improve muscle tone, particularly in the quadriceps, will help to support the surrounding joints. Hill work and exercise over cavaletti's (raised trotting poles) are a great way to help improve muscle strength as well as suppleness.

OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL RIDERS TO EXPERIENCE THE BONEO CDI*** Boneo Park is set to open its doors to a much larger group of riders when in 2014, HRCAV and PCAV riders will have the opportunity to compete alongside our elite EA dressage riders. In this new initiative, Boneo Park is looking to give more riders the opportunity to compete in a large-scale event and to mix riders of different ages and levels to help develop the sport. Taking place over the Australia Day long weekend, 24-26 January 2014, Managing Director of Boneo Park, Fiona McNaught is excited at the opportunity of bringing these riders together. 'This is something that I have wanted to do for a long time, to have pony club kids competing at the same competition as our Olympic level riders will just be incredible, if we want to inspire our younger riders to aim for the top then this is the best possible way!' Boneo Park is honoured to be working alongside local clubs, the Boneo Adult Riding Club and the Southern Peninsula Pony Club who will each host their respective organisation's classes.

Join up for the Crackin' Cancer Horse Trail Ride Through the high country of the magnificent New England ranges.
This exciting and adventurous horse ride is on again. There is a saying that goes “the proof of the pudding is in the eating” that could be applied to the growing number of riders each year who are adding to the success of this five day horse ride known as the Crackin' Cancer Horse Trail Ride. To those who wonder at the name it is a fund raising venture approved by the Cancer Council of NSW designed to raise money to aid the research into cracking the codes of the various forms of the insidious disease known as cancer and who among you does not know of someone who has suffered from this deadly disease? Three Waters “High Country” Holidays is again hosting this unique ride which sees entirely different country on each of its four riding days traversing spectacular high ranges, river, creeks, forest and historic old Sapphire mining areas. This ride is led daily by Steve Langley an accredited Trail Leader and Trail Overseer with Trail Riding Australia Inc. and who has been a professional horse trekking veteran for the past thirty six years taking visitors from all parts of the world on long distance horse treks which included his famed “Ride the Divide” ten day horse treks from Bullock Mountain near Glen Innes to the coast arriving at places like Coffs Harbour, South Ballina, Valla Beach and Dorrigo. Steve knows the country surrounding his land like the back of his hand. Much of the country Steve takes you through is rarely seen by people other than the landowners and the men who work these properties which number many thousands of hectares of cattle and sheep country and all covering the most magnificent horse riding land you could imagine. This ride can only take place with the continued support of these landowners who generously provide Steve with access and keys to the occasional locked gate.
After two days of riding an average of 25/30 km, a rest day is held on the Wednesday where Mark Langley a renowned horse breaker, trainer and horse handling clinician whose special skills are helping him become well known for his horse handling and horsemanship clinics. Mark will do a special clinic on that day for ten dollars per head which he donates back to the Cancer Council of NSW. Last year the limit of fifty riders was reached and this year we are putting a limit of sixty riders on this incredible ride so book in early to guarantee your place.
