Our base for this trip is a spacious Spanish villa surrounded by orange trees on the much soughtafter holiday destination of the magnificent Costa Blanca. On the outskirts of the sea front town of Javea, our villa is a peaceful and quiet place to base ourselves. From here we will start our daily training rides and sessions into the backcountry and the hills of the area. Popular among Pro cyclists and teams for its quiet roads and wide variety of terrain, the riding is challenging but the climbs are not as steep and hard as the Pyrenees or the Alps, making this the ideal location for some early season training. At the end of the day you can relax by the pool with a drink, and make the most of the facilities to wash your cycling kit ready for the next day’s training, before we sit down for a well deserved fully catered evening meal. Our rides will be focused towards improving your fitness and teaching you methods to apply back at home. One all important recovery day is planned mid week so that you can better benefit from the training camp as a whole. These rides are aimed at the amateur cyclists wanting a taste of the pro-cycling lifestyle and training. Tailored towards improving your fitness and ability; train like a pro, live like a pro‌!
Trip details: Day 1 Arrival: 45km ride You may choose to arrive by personal car, rental car or by plane. The nearest airports are Valencia and Alicante. If you or your group need a transfer from the airport this can be arranged. The first thing to do is build your bike. Depending on your arrival time, there should be time for an easy ride to shake out the legs before dinner.
Day 2:
65-90km Hill Intervals After a relaxed breakfast in the court-yard, we’ll head out towards the Val d’Ebo climb that is often used as a reference climb by team on training camp. BMC use this climb to train on and so will we! This climb will serve as a timing point and we will work on your climbing and pacing. 2 to 3 intervals and we will head back to the house to relax and have a cold beer and snack before dinner.
Day 3:
120km Sprint Training
Our ride today will take us away from the coast and into the rolling hills of the Costa Blanca backcountry. We will mostly ride an Endurance ride, but will include some sprint improvement intervals in order to get in some higher intensity, work on training your recovery time and improving your sprint and acceleration.
Day 4:
145km Endurance Ride After two solid days on the bike you will now have an idea of the terrain and style of riding this area has to offer. Today will be an endurance day that will see you cover 145km and 2500m of climbing. If your legs are feeling a little tired, there is a beautiful but somewhat shorter 70km option that will enable you to save your legs a little in preparation for the rest of the week. Today’s focus will be on group riding skills and working together as a group.
Day 5:
25-45km Rest day
We will take a break today and go for a short and easy ride to the beach or for lunch in a café. It is important to rest and recover from the last few days. A sleep in, a look around town and you’ll be ready for the next two days or riding. Recovery is as important as training, and we will show you how to do a proper recovery ride… before some beer and dinner around the pool.
Day 6:
50-80km – Hill Intervals We will return to our much loved and often dreaded hill reps today. We will put into practice what we have learned over the past few days as we help you fine tune your climbing skills, a skill that is all too often neglected by many who choose to instead label themselves as “non-climbers”. With the proper skills, climbing is a whole new ball-game.
Day 7:
150km Today is our last day. We will head to the longer hills slightly inland from Calpe. It is common to see individual Pro riders or entire teams on this loop. Alpacin Giant have a permanent base nearby and you will often see the riders doing efforts on this climbs, or small groups of 2 or 3 Pros from around Europe who are in the area to get some warm weather training with friends between their heavy racing schedule. A café at the top of one of the hills is a great place to stop and have a bite to eat with a great view of the nearby hills plunging into the Mediterainean sea. Today’s focus will be on Endurance once again.
Day 8:
Departure It’s been a good solid week of training and it is time to head home and put everything you have learned into effect. Again if you need transportation for yourself or your group to a nearby airport this can be arranged.
