INTRODUCTION

I THANK ALL MIGHTY GOD for giving me and my co-workers the knowledge, energy and patience to finish this book, and present it with confidence, pride and joy to the educational community. I also extend special acknowledgements to our Editor in Chief Ivan Mendez, Lic for helping us turning this material into a coherent and widely usable course. Let’s Study English develops thoroughly the contents of the ENGLISH SYLLABUS Educational program for Tenth grade, emphasizing on its core components: Concepts, procedures, grammar and attitudes. It also presents the main usage of key words, vocabulary and useful expressions which will enable the teachers to boost their performance in class and students to speak, understand, read and write English up to a basic level, so as to create a solid background that allows the continuation of ESL (English as a Second Language) studies. I recommend students the usage of a basic dictionary and teachers to keep emphasis upon speaking, writing and understanding English from the beginning to the end of the class. However, and due to the complexity of some grammar structures, I have also presented some explanations in Spanish, so as to make such contents easier to understand. Additional resources like Audio CD’s, You Tube videos and Face book Networks will be available in order not only to improve the performance of teachers, but also to facilitate the assimilation of the contents for students. I am confident that these tools will turn the classroom work into a more productive, competitive, amusing and friendly environment. Last but not least, on behalf of Equipo Rama’s personnel, I deeply thank and congratulate all the teachers for doing such a remarkable job with the new generation of students, and also for being aware that as long as we give the best of us, so they will succeed. May God bless you all! The Author

GRAMMAR IN CONTEXT: Modal auxiliary verbs: WOULD We use the modal auxiliary would for: - Making polite requests and offerings EXAMPLE:

I would like a glass of water, please (request)

The negative form of would is would not, which is contracted as wouldn’t EXAMPLE:

John would not like to go to the beach today John wouldn’t like to go to the beach today (contracted)

We form questions by placing would before the subject - Would is also commonly used in the expression would like EXAMPLE:

Would you like a glass of water? (offering)

Important: The expression would like (is often contracted to ‘d like with pronouns) but it does not mean like. In this case I’d like means I want I would like (I’d like) is softer, less direct and much more polite than I want EXAMPLE: I would like some soda I want some soda (meaning)

Lesson 1: PERSONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION Learn the following concepts Biography: The life history of a particular person Biographer: The person who writes a biography Biographical: Information for writing a biography Information: Data, or news communicated by words, writing or any other means In relation to a person. Relating to some individual Personal: person Reading practice: A biography is a detailed description of someone’s life: education, work, relationships and death. The difference between a resume or curriculum vitae and a biography, is that a biography presents various aspects of the subject’s life, including intimate details or experiences, and may include an analysis of the personality. A résumé is short, usually one or three pages and directs the reader’s attention to those aspects of a person’s background, directly relevant to a particular job position. An autobiography is a piece of work written by the subject himself. A work is biographical if it covers all of a person’s life.

(A) My life: Mae Jameson (B) I was born on October 17, 1956 in Decatur, Alabama, but I grew up in Chicago, Illinois. I was especially interested in Anthropology, Archaeology and Astronomy. Luckily, my parents encouraged those interests. I graduated from high school at 16. Then I earned degrees in Chemical engineering and African-American studies at Stanford University. Later, I graduated from Cornell University medical school. No challenge was too great for me to take on. (C) My accomplishments did not end there. In 1981, I joined NASA space program in Houston, Texas. And in 1988, I reached my biggest dream: I finally became the first African-American astronaut woman. Just four years later, I was named science mission specialist. (D) Today, I encourage young people—especially women and girls—to study Sciences. My life example teaches us to follow our dreams, no matter how great they are.
