MEDICLINIC VERGELEGEN

MEDICLINIC BRITS

I would like to express my happiness with the Mediclinic Vergelegen Unit H and CCU staff concerning their service and attendance to Yolandi van Heerden before and after her brain surgery.

I would like to compliment your staff on their excellent work. We arrived on Saturday, 9 April 2016, late in the evening, at Mediclinic Brits with my daughter Gaby with an acute abdomen. We were received friendlily by your Admin Reception lady and then also by the nursing staff, as well as the Ampath sister. They all made it as comfortable as possible for my daughter. Even the radiographer set her at ease. Also, the nursing staff in the Paediatric Unit were helpful and friendly. Hats off to Dr NC Ngobeni who was calm, collected and totally at ease during a very busy night. I would just like to ensure that the efforts and friendliness of all the team members did not go unnoticed. I would appreciate it if the people who were on evening duty on 9 April know the public does appreciate their work.

On Monday, 18 July 2016 as I was dropping her off at Mediclinic Vergelegen I felt that I might lose her forever. Today I feel totally the opposite. I cannot recall any previous occasion at any other hospital, where I could not mention at least one bad experience. Never, even outside of normal visiting hours (the CCU included), were we shown the door at Mediclinic Vergelegen. Never, when we requested attendance, has any staff member kept us waiting, which includes at shift handover. Night shift took the initiative to call her doctor in the early morning hours to obtain and administer other medication to soothe Yolandi’s pain and get her to sleep. All the smiles, those of the tea ladies included, and never was there an unhappy face. Numerous times I have asked Yolandi whether she was unhappy with the staff and their attendance to her. Never has her reply been negative. I can only imagine the extreme pain, uncomfortable situations and the tough mental times she had to go through. It was difficult for us and those close to her, but your staff were not only professional but human as well. I applaud and thank your staff for their attendance and service. Please do keep it up. MEDICLINIC PAARL My son Orlando Venn was admitted on Tuesday, 5 July 2016 with a broken wrist. He had surgery that night and was discharged on Thursday, 7 July. He had travelled for Craven Week with the Zimbabwe Under 13 Rugby Team. Your hospital staff were absolutely amazing and nothing short of hospitable. My son had no family there and he says your staff treated him very kindly and attended to his every whim. As a 13-year-old he was very impressed with the meals, especially the huge frikkadels and lasagne. In his exact words: ‘Mummy, it is proper here.’ I could never thank you enough for your well-run facility and your amazing staff. Thank you and God bless all your wonderful employees. Alma Venn 2

MEDICLINIC MIDSTREAM The Patient Administration Manager Elizma van Zyl, recently put in a big effort to get a procedure (a cardiac ablation by Dr Ruan Louw) done with Bestmed. She also showed a lot of empathy and care. We just wanted to thank her and mention the passion and competency she showed in her capacity as Patient Administration Manager. Dr Pieter du Plessis

MEDICLINIC DURBANVILLE I was admitted to Mediclinic Durbanville on Wednesday, 20 July 2016 for a procedure. I was very impressed with the administration and was contacted by Antoinette from your Admissions Department a day prior to admission. When I arrived on the Wednesday everything was already done and correct. All I had to do was to sign the consent form. I was admitted to Unit D and was met by PN Adeel Wildschudt. From the word go she made me feel I am important. She

was friendly and made everything as easy as she could for me. She was wellinformed and could answer all my questions. She made me feel like a person and not ‘just a number’ or ‘just another patient’. Between her and PEN Ancha Bothma, they made sure I was comfortable. Ancha, and especially Adeel, really stood out for me and are truly an asset to your hospital. I was almost sad to leave when I was discharged, as they both made me feel at home.

MEDICLINIC CAPE TOWN I have, unfortunately, had many stays at various private hospitals, for brief and extended periods of time, some of them serious where I was in the High Care Unit and my condition was precarious and life-threatening. All of these stays have been positive in terms of medical care and treatment by doctors and nursing staff. However, none have gone ‘out of their way’, other than within the ambit of treatment prescribed by the providing medical team and basic nursing care.

However, my recent stays at Mediclinic Cape Town have made me feel special and cared for, both as a patient and client. Dr Jason Crane is my treating doctor. He always extends himself beyond the normal port of service provision as a doctor. Thanks also to Billie and Lauren, his administrative staff. The treatment I have received has always made me want to come back – not that one wants to come back to a hospital, but you have to if you have a chronic condition. Hospital General Manager Michelle Africa goes out of her

way to welcome me and personalises my stay with visits to the unit. Patient Experience Manager Renaldo Adams makes sure I am comfortable. Thus, my stay is at ‘home away from home’. The nurse in charge of Unit F, Carol Liebenberg, ensures that I am comfortable, that my dignity as a patient is respected and that the medical treatment prescribed by Dr Crane is carried out with diligence and commitment. The homely but stately ambience as one enters the reception area extends to the units, and to the catering staff who politely provides you with sumptuous meals. You are greeted by all staff as you move through the hospital, including the theatre staff who recognise you and asks how you are doing. Therefore, as a patient, I choose Mediclinic Cape Town and would recommend it as among the finest hospitals in the CBD and Southern suburbs. Neil Sampson

I just wanted to say thank you to Dr Siviwe Mpateni. GETTING SOCIAL ON

WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!

Instagram Nowadays a picture paints more than the proverbial thousand words as its reach can be extended globally within seconds via the powerful online networks that exist between people. This impact is even greater on the image-driven social media platform Instagram where you can tell an entire story, filter or #nofilter. We asked Mediclinic’s Senior Social Media Engineer Darren Leite, about the decision to launch an Instagram account. ‘Instagram is such a powerful way to tell people’s stories,’ says Darren. ‘You can capture so much emotion in a single shot and convey the personal story behind it. That’s what people do on Instagram: They capture what’s going on in their lives and they share it with others.’

The key pillars of Mediclinic on Instagram are people and infrastructure. One can’t live without the other and at Mediclinic we have both so that’s what makes it such an impressive oper ation. In terms of these two key pillars of ours, the people aspect includes the human faces that embody our work – our patients, our staff and our doctors. Infrastructure covers technology and facilities. Instagram also enables us to spread the word about our various awareness campaigns, health months and more. ‘We’re really excited about this channel of communication that we’re opening up and we have lots of visual stories to tell,’ explains Darren.

daughter. Marlé was born three months premature and weighed 720g. Today she is a healthy 12-year-old, our pride and joy. She is excelling at school and also participating in kick-boxing. If I look back today I cannot believe that such a frail and broken little person 12 years back can be alive today, let alone participate in sports. Thank you. Keep on doing the good work and keep on praying for your patients. We will always remember your prayers when you knew that there was nothing more you could have done on the medical side. Surely this and your medical knowledge and expertise made the difference. You have our sincere appreciation and respect for the good work that you are doing. Although the current personnel may or may not have assisted our daughter, we think it is important to convey this word of encouragement to all personnel at the Neonatal CCU. We know that some days it is not the easiest job. But keep your spirits up. Proof of your work is 12 years old today. Blessing to you all.

PATIENT EXPERIENCE INDEX

INTERNATIONAL

VALUABLE INSIGHTS INTO THE PATIENT EXPERIENCE IN THE PAST TWO YEARS 50 000 OF OUR PATIENTS’ VOICES HAVE BEEN HEARD. WHAT INSIGHTS HAVE WE GAINED? In October 2014 the first Press Ganey surveys were sent out to our patients and we embarked on the Patient Experience Index (PEI) journey to improve the patient experience and build a patient-centred culture through compassionate connected care. Feedback has highlighted three areas around communication which offer opportunities to improve, including communicating around treatment decisions, keeping patients informed, as well as responding to complaints or concerns raised during the hospital stay. These areas have appeared consistently in the Top 10 priority index throughout the various regions. Action plans have been developed at each hospital to address areas of improvement.

A positive patient experience impacts positively on clinical outcomes.

Allowing my family and me to be part of the discussion around my treatment assisted my healing process.

My nurse explained the new medication I was prescribed and explained why she had to monitor my vitals. I felt like I was in the loop.

My nurse immediately addressed my concerns. She was professional and I was relieved when I could see her concern for me as a patient.

MEDICLINIC PANORAMA The Healing Hearts Group meets on a monthly basis at the hospital to provide support to patients and family of people with heart conditions. In 2016 they celebrated 10 years of providing valuable support to the community.

MEDICLINIC DURBANVILLE

In August 2016 Mediclinic Panorama opened its new hybrid theatre as part of its 30th birthday celebrations. The hybrid theatre allows doctors to perform a full range of procedures – from endovascular to hybrid to minimally invasive or open surgery – in a single room, virtually without compromise. This also allows for the opportunity to explore new procedures in an environment designed for the broadest clinical needs. The hybrid theatre also has the potential to improve care for patients, by allowing for multiple procedures to be performed in the same room in one treatment session that would otherwise be performed in separate rooms.

Mediclinic Durbanville turned 21 in August 2016. To celebrate this milestone all staff, patients and doctors were invited to participate in a potjiekos competition. The Pot Luck Potjiekos Competition was held on the hospital premises on Friday, 5 August 2016. It was well-attended, with 20 teams from different departments competing for the winning title. Themes at the celebation varied from African, Italian and Western to a local farm stall. Two executive chefs from the Ruslamere Conference Centre had the arduous task of judging the competition. Mediclinic Durbanville thanks everyone who contributed to this memorable event.

QUALITY HEALTHCARE AWARD FOR TECHNICAL DIRECTOR

INSIDE: ONE INTRANET FOR THE GROUP

AROUND THE WORLD IN 505 DAYS

A Peer Review Award of the Quality Healthcare Initiative (QHI) has been awarded to the Hirslanden Private Hospital Group: Technical Director of Nursing Sven Lorenz. He is one of four nursing peers from Switzerland to receive this award.

In October 2016, Hirslanden introduced an intranet portal named Inside across the entire Hirslanden Group. True to the motto ‘One Group – One Intranet’ it is the central access point for everyday work. It has the character of a portal because it offers information at hospital and group levels, as well as virtual workspaces. Moreover, it is linked to further web applications and websites. Inside imparts all the information that has been spread throughout the internal communication channels to date, such as the employee magazine ‘Apropos’ or hospital newsletters.

Bertrand Piccard landed safely in Abu

More than 370 hospitals in Germany and Switzerland, including 15 of 16 Hirslanden hospitals, are involved in the initiative and voluntarily exceed the existing legal requirements for quality assurance with it. This is done in the interests of even better medical care and the best possible patient safety. The QHI was founded in 2008 with the objective of continuously improving the quality of results and increasing patient benefits in the process. ER24 PROVIDES FIRST-AID COURSE TO RANGERS As part of ER24’s relationship with the website www.stoprhinopoaching. com, a first-aid course was offered for the rangers. The sponsorship, together with a number of other corporates, included specialised

trauma packs for managing gunshot wounds and heavy bleeding. Earlier this year a ranger in the Kruger National Park was shot. Thanks to the training by ER24 the team was able to save the ranger’s life.

ER24 VISITED BY TEAM AUSTRALIA EMS Team Australia EMS paramedics toured South Africa in July. They were accompanied by 13 students, who are studying for a Bachelor of Health Science Paramedic Degree in Australia and New Zealand. During their visit, the students were booked on various emergency vehicles

as observers. They visited ER24 Pietermaritzburg, as well as ER24 branches in Cape Town. Paramedics also took the students to the Metro Rescue Base, Red Cross Air Mercy Services and a few government and private hospitals in and around Cape Town.

STUDENT GETS INSIGHT INTO ER24 As part of a visible learning project, Niike Neervoort, a grade seven learner at St Stithians Girls Preparatory spent time with ER24 paramedics. Niike wanted to gain an understanding of the emergency medical services environment and the work ER24

paramedics do on a daily basis, including the difficulties experienced on the road and the emotional hardships faced. She also wanted to generate more public appreciation for the work paramedics do and to determine what could be done to make paramedics’ work easier and safer.

NEWS CARE EXPERT OPTIMISES AND EXPANDS ITS UNIQUE APPROACH TO QUALITY HEALTHCARE

Reflecting on the journey to date and the plans for 2017 Over the course of four months, the Care Expert Project Team has orientated hospital management teams, Care Expert Navigators and surgeons about the product and explained the framework to implement it. To date, the results have been unprecedented. They are as follows:

28 Hospitals onboarded and Care Expert Navigators on-boarded and engaged

The Leadership Roadshow in 2016 highlighted how the healthcare environment has become fragmented, with the different role players having diverse focuses. As a result, the patient’s best interests are not always in the foreground. Care Expert plays an important role in paving the way, as part of the PatientsFirst@Mediclinic strategy to transform into an integrated healthcare system provider.

17 Hospitals offering Care Expert

Funders are changing their models of reimbursement, in accordance with international trends, with a strong focus on the quality of clinical outcomes and the value provided. Care Expert allows for a single fee across service providers, with the intention of improving overall hospital efficiency and clinical quality. It is an integrated care product that aims to make quality healthcare more accessible to our patients.

USER-FRIENDLY APP ENHANCES INTEGRATED STAFFING MODEL AN ENHANCED TOOL HAS BEEN CREATED THAT IS USER-FRIENDLY AND EFFICIENT. THIS SERVES TO UPDATE AND ENHANCE THE FUNCTIONALITY OF THE INTEGRATED STAFFING MODEL (ISM). IT EMPOWERS NURSING UNIT MANAGERS TO PROACTIVELY MANAGE STAFF COSTS WHILE PROVIDING QUALITY PATIENT CARE. WE HAVE HAD A LONG AND EXCITING JOURNEY AND THE NEW FUNCTIONALITY AS WELL AS THE NURSING UNIT STAFFING DASHBOARD ARE LIVE.

The project established five key themes and prepared users throughout the journey. These are:

The development of a dashboard to aid proactive cost, quality and people management in nursing units

The improvement of the forecasting functionality by providing the ability to interpret the impact of staff-planning decisions on unit costs

Simplifying the method to determine the unit acuity profile by using the acuity assessment form

To minimise manual capturing and improve integration of the ISM with other systems

Establishing a structured training, support and maintenance process

We established a strong working group per hospital who attended train-the-trainer sessions and then trained their teams back at their locations. Thank you to all who participated. We look forward to sharing future enhancements as and when they arise to further enhance the system.

PATIENT EXPERIENCE WORKSHOPS THE ROLL-OUT OF THE WORKSHOPS AT HOSPITALS IS PROGRESSING EXTREMELY WELL WITH SOME HOSPITALS ALREADY HAVING COMPLETED THE ROLL-OUT TO ALL THEIR STAFF. MANY HOSPITALS HAVE ALSO INCLUDED THIRD PARTIES, SUCH AS RADIOLOGY, PATHOLOGY, CATERING, LAUNDRY AND SECURITY. THE FEEDBACK HAS BEEN PHENOMENAL. To date 11 616 permanent Mediclinic staff have attended the Managing PX workshops with 1 152 managers having attended the Leading PX workshops. We have

also had an additional 1 212 delegates attending which comprise contract staff, ER24 as well as contracted-out services attendance. Workshops at Corporate Office commenced earlier this year and are progressing very well, with more than 50% of line managers having already attended the Leading PX workshops. We are excited to see the progress being made with the roll-out of the workshops and want to encourage all staff to continue to apply the lessons learnt at these workshops, always putting the patient at the centre of everything we do.
