ERASMUS+ INVENTORS AND INNOVATORS: OUR HERITAGE AND OUR FUTURE

Let the future tell the truth, and evaluate each one according to his work and accomplishments. The present is theirs; the future, for which I have really worked, is mine.

 born 10 July 1856 in Smiljan, modern-day Croatia  an inventor, electrical engineer, mechanical

engineer, physicist, and futurist

 best known for his contributions to the design of the

modern alternating current electricity supply system

 died 7 January 1943 in New York

 his family house in Smiljan, Lika ERASMUS+ INVENTORS AND INNOVATORS: OUR HERITAGE AND OUR FUTURE

 eidetic memory  had a talent for making home craft

tools and mechanical appliances and the ability to memorize Serbian epic poems

ERASMUS+ INVENTORS AND INNOVATORS: OUR HERITAGE AND OUR FUTURE

 father Milutin was an Eastern Orthodox priest  mother Đuka had never received a formal

education

 she was never photographed  had 3 sisters

ERASMUS+ INVENTORS AND INNOVATORS: OUR HERITAGE AND OUR FUTURE

 primary school in Smiljan - German, arithmetics, and religion

 the Higher Real gymnasium in Karlovac  the Austrian Polytechnic in Graz  a brilliant student in his 1st year but got addicted

to gambling in his 2nd year at the college which ruined his graduation and he was not able to obtain a degree

Alternating Current  inefficient and weak Edinson’s direct current (DC)  alternating current – to Tesla all energies were cyclic  1880 constructed AC induction motor  1888 paper “A New System of Alternating Current Motors

and Transformers”

 George Westinghouse bought his 40 patents  “the war of the currents” – DC vs. AC  AC - a superior system

Light  didn’t invent light itself, but he did invent

how light can be harnessed and distributed

 developed and used fluorescent bulbs in

his lab some 40 years before industry “invented” them

Tesla Coil  the most impressive and controversial  one of his most famous inventions  a high-frequency air-core transformer  the Earth itself is a magnet that can generate electricity utilizing

frequencies as a transmitter

 an experimental station during 1899  experiments with a large coil operating in the

megavolts range, producing artificial lightning (and thunder) consisting of millions of volts and up to 135 feet (41 m) long discharges

ERASMUS+ INVENTORS AND INNOVATORS: OUR HERITAGE AND OUR FUTURE

 obtained $150,000 ($4,412,400 in today's

dollars) from JP Morgan in return for a 51% share of any generated wireless patents

 Shoreham, New York  from this facility, Tesla hoped to demonstrate

wireless transmission of electrical energy across the Atlantic

ERASMUS+ INVENTORS AND INNOVATORS: OUR HERITAGE AND OUR FUTURE

 around 300 patents worldwide

ERASMUS+ INVENTORS AND INNOVATORS: OUR HERITAGE AND OUR FUTURE

 1894 Elliott Cresson Medal  1917 AIEE Edison Medal  1931 Order of the Yugoslav Crown  1934 John Scott Medal  1937 University of Paris Medal

 etc.

ERASMUS+ INVENTORS AND INNOVATORS: OUR HERITAGE AND OUR FUTURE

 Hotel Waldorf Astoria since 1900  from 1922 moving to a new hotel

every few years leaving behind unpaid bills  walked to the park every day to

feed the pigeons  1934 Hotel New Yorker – room 3327

ERASMUS+ INVENTORS AND INNOVATORS: OUR HERITAGE AND OUR FUTURE

 from 1931  Time magazine cover commemorating

his 75th birthday  annual press conferences for his

birthday  told reporters about his discoveries and

new experiments

 1931 ERASMUS+ INVENTORS AND INNOVATORS: OUR HERITAGE AND OUR FUTURE

 death at 86 of coronary thrombosis

 New York City mayor read a eulogy live

over the WNYC radio while violin pieces "Ave Maria" and "Tamo daleko" were played in the background  2000 people attended a state funeral for

Tesla  the ashes are displayed in a gold-plated

sphere on a marble pedestal in the Nikola Tesla Museum in Belgrade

gilded urn at the Nikola Tesla Museum in Belgrade

ERASMUS+ INVENTORS AND INNOVATORS: OUR HERITAGE AND OUR FUTURE

 born during a lightning storm

 the idea for smartphone technology in 1901  had famous friends (like Mark Twain)  suffered from insomnia and obsessive compulsive

behaviors (OCD) had a fear of germs

 obsessed with number 3

 pearls drove him crazy  eidetic memory

 a polyglot – spoke 8 languages ERASMUS+ INVENTORS AND INNOVATORS: OUR HERITAGE AND OUR FUTURE

 worked every day from 9am until 6pm, with dinner from exactly

8:10 pm, at Delmonico's restaurant and later the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel

 for exercise, Tesla walked aroind 15km per day and he curled his toes

100 times for each foot every night, saying that it stimulated his brain cells

 a vegetarian in his later years, eating only bread, milk, honey, and

vegetable juices

 1.88 m tall and weighed 64 kg  sleep habits – slept only 2 hours a night

 celibacy – he never married

ERASMUS+ INVENTORS AND INNOVATORS: OUR HERITAGE AND OUR FUTURE

 The Nikola Tesla Award – for contribution to the generation

or utilization of electric power  Tesla, Inc, an American electric car manufacturer

 Ericsson Nikola Tesla, Croatian affiliate of Ericsson  Day of Nikola Tesla, Niagara Falls, 10 July (in Croatia too)  Tesla, an SI-derived unit of magnetic inductivity

 Tesla, a 26 kilometer-wide crater on the far side of the moon  2244 Tesla, a minor planet
