Johannes Hevelius Presentation by Weronika Zwierzchowska
Who is Hevelius? Johannes Hevelius- (in German also known as Hevel; Polish: Jan Heweliusz; 28 January 1611- 28 January 1687) was a mayor of Danzig (Gdańsk). As an astronomer, he gained a reputation as "the founder of lunar topography", and described ten new constellations, seven of which are still recognized by astronomers. He also was mathematician and constructor of scientific instruments.
Astronomy In 1641 he built an observatory on the roofs of his three connected houses, equipping it with splendid instruments, ultimately including a large Keplerian telescope of 46 m focal length, with a wood and wire tube he constructed himself. This may have been the longest "tubed" telescope before the advent of the tubeless aerial telescope. The observatory was known by the name Sternenburg
Hevelius’ fame and reputation Jan Heweliusz gained fame and appreciation above all as an outstanding constructor of astronomical instruments and a versatile, accurate observer of the sky.
His achievments: blue and earth globe, microscope, two telescopes and a polemoscope that Hevelius made for himself
Astronomy Hevelius made observations of sunspots, 1642–1645, devoted four years to charting the lunar surface, discovered the Moon's libration in longitude, and published his results in Selenographia, sive Lunae descriptio. He discovered four comets. These discoveries led to his thesis that such bodies revolve around the Sun in parabolic paths.
Astronomy A complex halo phenomenon was observed by many in the city on 20 February 1661, and was described by Hevelius in his Mercurius in Sole visus Gedani the following year. Johannes Hevelius and wife Elisabeth making observations
Heweliusz was the bestknown Gdańsk brewer. He came from a family with typical brewing traditions. His great-grandfather Nicholas, grandfather Michał and father Abraham also dealt with brewing. After studying and traveling abroad, Heweliusz returned to Gdańsk and, due to his father's deteriorating health, he handed him over in his daily professional duties.
