October 27th marks the one-hundredth anniversary of the New York City subway system. In this thrilling talk, Aesthetic Realism Consultant and historian John Stern speaks about the subway’s history and its meaning to New York and the world! He tells how the NYC subway system richly illustrates this principle, stated by Eli Siegel, the founder of Aesthetic Realism: “The world, art, and self explain each other: each is the aesthetic oneness of opposites.” IRT Flushing Line
Says Mr. Stern--
“The opposites of surface and depth, hardness and softness are central in the construction of the subway. Indeed, the geology of Manhattan that the subway had to traverse is complex, ranging from hard rock a half billion years old to quicksand....We can ask: do we have anything like interior recesses and subterranean tunnels in ourselves?”

“When we can look at a person and see that person as uniquely that person, and through the unutterably specific quality of that person we can have a feeling that everything is sweetly, tremendously, and excitingly on our side,…love is going on. That state of mind is present in a poem.”
