Creating a Sustainable World through the Power of Business
Erb Institute Post-Doctoral Fellowship Program The Frederick A. and Barbara M. Erb Institute for Global Sustainable Enterprise at the University of Michigan is a joint program between the Stephen M. Ross School of Business and the School of Natural Resouces and Environment. The Erb Institute is focused on addressing the world’s sustainability challenges, broadly defined, by challenging and shaping markets and the private sector to become sources of positive solutions. We are currently accepting applications from talented and creative early-career scholars who are interested in joining the Erb Institute as Post-Doctoral Fellows. Researchers in the Erb Institute are global in their approach, think in terms of systems, and adopt a view of broad sustainability. Rather than limiting our search to individuals who represent a particular discipline, we seek scholars whose research and academic interests sit – from a contextual perspective – at the inter- and transdisciplinary nexus between broad sustainability and the private sector. Specifically, we are seeking post-doctoral fellows who will conduct work in at least one of the following four areas: 1. Consumer behavior and conscious consumption; 2. Community and human development; 3. Global change; and/or 4. Corporate governance. Applicants must be at the beginning of their academic careers, having received their Ph.D. or comparable degree between September 1, 2015, and August 31, 2018. People holding current academic positions at a rank above post-doctoral fellow are not eligible to apply. Fellowships are open to U.S. & non-U.S. citizens. Fellows are appointed for two years in the Erb Institute and are expected to be in residence during the academic years of the fellowship, participate in the intellectual life of the Institute, and devote time to their independent research. The annual stipend will be based on an academic calendar year, September 1 – August 31; a modest discretionary research fund will also be provided.
Our Current Post-Doctoral Fellows Todd Schifeling conducts research on the sustainability implications of interactions between social movements and companies, focusing especially on the evolving struggle to define green products as opposed to greenwashing. His work has been published in the American Journal of Sociology, and has received best paper awards from the American Sociological Association.
Uyanga Turmunkh conducts research on sustainable decisions of individuals and firms, with a focus on the role that environmental, social, and scientific uncertainty plays in such decisions. Uyanga studies individual and firm perceptions of climate-related risks, their determinants, and the ways in which size and likelihood of these risks shape individual and firm behavior.
