Panel Discussion 11:30

This session will touch upon the current trends that are set to accelerate the construction industry. With an increased focus on the decarbonisation of the built environment, digitisation of construction and the importance of occupant satisfaction – the construction industry must be agile, resilient and boldly take up action.

• Ease Of Access: High performance barrier-free solutions for unrestricted access

• Flexible Façades: Façades that offer maximum design freedom and integration of functions

The importance of clean air to people’s short- and long-term well-being and the protection of built environment assets; has highlighted the critical role of healthy HVAC system performance.

The requirements placed on our buildings are becoming ever more complex in terms of sustainability, technology, aesthetics, and comfort. As builders of the future we need to constantly challenge ourselves to find the right balance between design and function; thinking holistically should always be at the heart of every decision for our future cities. Ammar Alul, the Managing Director of Schüco Middle East will present the latest innovations and technology that address five main topics of the most modern design trends and requirements for the building envelope.

An adult typically breathes 17,000 litres of air daily – so a low concentration of air pollution represents a large number of contaminants entering the human body by inhalation. As a result, human occupants are exposed to a wide array of pollutants with various concentrations and particle size distribution. In addition, urban air is full of microscopic particles, which can be health hazardous and thus considered a specific type of air pollution. On the other hand, occupants’ emissions, outdoor pollutants, and excessive human occupancy; accelerate facility aging and deteriorate the HVAC performance, leading to maintenance-intensive measures, such as frequent filter replacements and Property, Plant, and Equipment (PPE) cleaning.

With this diverse mix of airborne pollutants, a significant portion of these particles can end-up depositing in the respiratory tract - the deposition depends on the size, density, shape, charge, and surface properties of the particles and the breathing pattern of the individual. Therefore, the physical and chemical characterization of the contaminants is essential in filter selection and design to reduce their particle size distribution and concentration. The existence of atmospheric / recirculated airborne contaminants in various forms, concentrations, and size distributions represents a significant challenge to Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Systems.

This presentation addresses and analyses the filter performance characteristics while underpinning the role of clean in providing healthier HVAC systems and built-environment. The presentation also highlights the required steps to raise the air filtration bar to enhance IAQ.

• What are the current construction patterns and how to shift focus toward green materials?

MIDDLEEASTDESIGNANDBUILDWEEK.COM 33 12TH - 14TH SEPTEMBER 2022

For this reason, many organizations have introduced guidelines and standards on sustainability and energy efficiency. The term “Sustainable Development” was defined in the Year 1987 as the “Economic and social development that meets the needs of the current generation without undermining the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. It is also defined as “Don’t take more than your share”, etc. These guidelines and standards show that there is a lot more involved to energy efficiency than just making recommendations about what can be done to save energy. It actually require a lot more knowledge and experience in order to make recommendations for energy efficiency that do not compromise safety or indoor air quality, and maintain reliability in systems.

This presentation will highlight so me solutions for sustainable living and the green building concept. It will explain how holistic approach and integrated design has produced paradigm shifts in several aspects. Some examples on how to approach sustainability and implement integrated design will also be introduced in this Afterpresentation.thispresentati on, the audience will obtain a basic knowledge on sustainability and integrated building design that will help open for them new horizons in designing for better buildings.

Azmi S. Aboulhoda, Managing Director, EMergy 14:30 The Sustainability In the Holistic Approach

Global warming, national security, competence, water protection, health issues, etc. are some examples of many reasons, which have influenced the need to become more sustainable and highly efficient in terms of energy and water use in buildings. It is more difficult to convert existing buildings to sustainable and efficient ones, when compared to implementing relevant methods and standards in new constructions.
