RECREAC TION IN THE EMERGING SMART CIT Y PITTSBURGH, PA objective // identify opportunity within a city in relation to disruptive technology. // address with incremental programming at various scales. narrative // cities will start to shift to an experience based economy as goods and ser- vices become automatized through technology. // recreation will be utilized as an inherently positive form of an experience and can be used as a platform to build off of. // by using Pittsburgh’s existing waterfront path as a basis for a network of activity, a series of scalar program pieces are used to define and ex- pand upon a users experience. // these experiences are then fed back into a digital network to create a re- fined experience based on similar interests. // a processing center and/or nucleus of activity can be used to filter, define, discover, a multitude of experience within the network [lot, district, county].

INTERGRATED DESIGN STUDIO CLEVELAND, OH objective // design a 250, 000 sqft office building that follows all local building code. // produce a full set of drawings that encompass a buildings totality [me- chanical, electrical, plumbing, structural, specialized systems]. // develop and implement innovative sustainable technology/systems. narrative // using simulation programs analyze site environmental factors [sun, wind, climate]. // respond to environmental concerns with building’s form while laying out predetermined program. // determine building’s less desirable conditions and develop systems to mitigate.

RESEARCH PAVILION KENT, OH objective // design a research center that will be sited on an active wetland. // minimal impact on surrounding environment. // pavilion to house classroom and lab. // implement passive and active sustainable strategies to reduce enviro- mental impact. narrative // siting engages user with surrounding wetland. // control views as a procession through pavilion to celebrate site. // analyze sun movement through seasons to exploit orientation and passive design strategies. // programming allows for clear separation of private/public zones while al lowing public viewing into private (lab) zone.
