This report was prepared for AgeOptions to provide current information on the growing senior population of suburban Cook County, Illinois. AgeOptions helps older adults in suburban Cook County live their lives to the fullest by empowering them with information and resources. AgeOptions partners with a network of other nonprofit community-based organizations that serve older adults and their caregivers, and the organization connects seniors with programs and services in their community, such as: • In-home care • Adult day services • Telephone assistance to answer questions and link callers to the resources they need • Problem solving with information specialists concerning care needs • Nutritious meals • Intervention and education to prevent fraud, abuse, and neglect • Advocacy to protect the rights of older adults and assure that critical services are available • Employment and volunteering opportunities

Notes Sources of Data • The information in this report is primarily derived from data collected by the U.S. Census Bureau in the decennial census and via the American Community Survey. Who are the seniors of suburban Cook County? • Suburban Cook County has a population of almost 552,000 seniors aged 60 years or more.

• The suburban Cook senior population represents more than one fifth of the area, at 22 percent of all persons. • The number of seniors has been growing rapidly, with the area adding about 4,700 seniors yearly since 2010.
“Percent” means the percent of all suburban residents who are 60+ years.

What are key characteristics of seniors? • Women are the clear majority of seniors in suburban Cook County, at 57 percent of all seniors. • Many seniors are in the youngest segments of the population. Some 30 percent are 60-64 years of age. Another 22 percent are 65-69 years old, meaning that more than half of seniors are under 70 years of age. • Whites are the great majority of Cook County seniors, at 73 percent of the population, but African Americans are one in six or 13 percent of seniors. • One of four seniors lives alone. • About 30 percent of seniors have a disability, though the percent of seniors without health insurance is low, at 3 percent. • About one of six seniors or 13 percent are veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces. • Finally, almost a third of seniors are in the labor force, meaning they are either working or looking for work.

What is the population of seniors in townships? â&#x20AC;˘ Senior populations in suburban Cook County range from a high of 37,000 in Wheeling Township to a low of 2,442 in River Forest. â&#x20AC;˘ In percentage terms, seniors are almost one third of Northfield Township and close to 30 percent of Niles and Norwood Park townships. Cicero has the lowest senior percentage at 11 percent.

What is the population of seniors in places? â&#x20AC;˘ Numerically, the largest senior populations in the region are in Arlington Heights, Elgin and Skokie, each of which has more than 17,000 seniors.
â&#x20AC;˘ Places where seniors are the highest percentage of the population are led by Palos Park, Palos Heights, Burr Ridge and Olympia Fields, where seniors are more than 37 percent of the population.

How do seniors’ characteristics vary by age categories? • Nearly a third or 30 percent of seniors are between the ages of 60 and 64 years. • Women are the majority of each age category. For example, 53 percent of seniors aged 60-64 years are women. • The female percent of each age category rises as seniors age. • Seniors in the younger age categories are more likely to be persons of color. Seniors who do not speak English well are at least 15 percent of all age categories between 60 and 84 years of age. Seniors in younger age groups are more likely to be immigrants than older seniors. About one of four seniors aged 60-69 years were born abroad. Younger age groups have higher levels of education. How do seniors differ by gender? • Women are the majority of seniors, at 57 percent of the population. • Male seniors are more likely to be immigrants. About 25 percent of senior men are born abroad compared to 22 percent of senior women. • Senior women are slightly more likely to be African American (14 percent) than senior men (12 percent). • About 15 percent of both senior men and women do not speak English well.

How many seniors are undocumented immigrants? We used respected estimates of undocumented immigrants available from the Center for Migration Studies, New York, to estimate the undocumented senior population in suburban Cook County. Specifically, we used national rates of legal status by age and race, and applied them to local populations. We estimate that suburban Cook County is home to approximately 4,100 seniors who are undocumented immigrants.
