INTRODUCTION

As a designer, I have long found my strength lies in my thoughtfulness, my observations of the world. I am always observing. I like to interpret the world around me in a delicate and straightforward way, with the ultimate outcome being good design. This makes me think of a quote from the book Dr. Zhivago by Boris Pasternak: “For a moment she discovered the purpose of her life. She was here on earth to grasp the meaning of its wild enchantment and to call each thing by its right name. For me, that is how I want to interact with the world. I want to call everything by its right and true name and bring it into my world and more importantly, my designs.

OBJECTIVE The Beat Generation is a literary movement and lifestyle established in post W Wii America that promoted the rejections of materialism and liberated the human condition. Although, this movement is littered with famous male writers and poets, the women who lived during this time and interacted with these writers were just as prolific. Unfortunately, they were also largely overlooked and overshadowed.

SOLUTION During a time when society dictated that a woman’s only place was in the home, the women writers of the Beat Generation were considered even more unconventional and alternative than their male counterparts. With that in mind, this book is designed with a 1950’s and 60’s aesthetic. Using prominent and era-specific typography and imagery, the idea was to convey the turbulent, dark, but exciting time these women lived in and experienced.

OBJECTIVE Design, develop, create a scientific conference based on the furture. Create a poster, brochure, and digital badge that can be used in the conference. The conference must us a specific creative thread that can be developed into a brand idenity that is thoughtful and cohesive.

SOLUTION To Speak: Global Syntax in the use of Esperanto is a hypothetical conference set at the United Nations in New York City. The idea behind the project is to bring about a better world by creating a universal language that can be used in congruence with ones own language as a way to communicate. Esperanto was created by Polish-Jewish ophthalmologist L. L. Zamenhof in 1887 for just this reason and it has quickly become a secret alternative to the more common use of popular language. The conference was designed to express the idea that we are all connected. I wanted to explore the anatomy of how we interact with the world and the meaning of what it is to be human. The use of antique etching, drawings, and medical drawings juxtaposed against blooming f lowers and other organic material helps to express humanity and our global connections to each other.

DISCIPLINE Poster Design Type Explorations

OBJECTIVE Pick an architectural themed event, tribute, or lecture series—either an existing one or one that you have invented. Explore the event as a whole and find three different topics to be discussed or featured, one topic for each poster. Using physical type, push the boundaries of conventional type to display the topic.

SOLUTION One of the most underestimated impacts of humanity on the environment is artificial light. Since the invention of the light bulb, humans have been redefining how our environment deals with light at night, and I found that to be fascinating. For the design of these posters, I explored three different aspects of light on the environment. Sky glow, the glow created by street lights, the effects of artificial light on nocturnal wildlife, and the effects of excessive light on human’s themselves. I used aspects of light in different ways to evoke the effects each topic has on us and our environment.

PART 01 Sky glow is the brightness of the night sky in a built up area as a result of light pollution. It increases the brightness of the dark areas of the sky, and reduces the contrast of stars and other celestial objects against the dark sky background.

COURSE Intergrated Communications

YEAR Fall 2017

DISCIPLINE uxui Interactive Design

OBJECTIVE Using skills acquired from this course build a uxui project with three different deliverables all using user experience as a base. Have you ever been in a large group and been unable to decide what to eat for dinner, or perhaps what bar to go to next? Perhaps you are voting for your school’s student council? This application can help to simplify this. Using secure technology, users can create profiles that protect their privacy and also protect the integrity of the institution of voting.

SOLUTION Voting, in principle, should be a simple and easy procedure but it can become quite cumbersome and difficult to manage if not done correctly, especially with the current political atmosphere. I have found a few application that allow voting, but they don’t seem well designed nor do they give the idea of security. This application would use mobile and web technology to help groups of people come to decisions; this can be used to settle small discussions and larger community decisions.

COURSE Type Compostioin

YEAR Spring 2015

DISCIPLINE Layout Design Print Magazine Design

OBJECTIVE Design a magazine based on a spacific subject. Compile and organize a minimum of five articles that depict the subject matter. Create a cohesive visual system through imagery, graphics, and typeography. If possible use your own photography to convey the subject matter.

SOLUTION Go Magazine is an editorial project about exploration, adventure, and enjoying the natural world. The concept of the magazine is to attract a new and younger, more female, audience to the beauty of the natural world. Using soft, clean, and more feminine color palattes and shapes, the magazine’s goal is to convey that exploration is not an antiquarian or masculine endevor.

YEAR Fall 2016

OBJECTIVE Select a braqnd that is dying, defunct, or dead and identify its essence. Revive the brand by repositioning and expanding the new brand’s identity and creating new extentions that open the company to a whole new demographic while still remaining true to its original soul.

SOLUTION I chose to rebrand United Colors of Benetton, a clothing brand born in the early 1980’s with a conscious social soul. The brand in recent years has become antiquated and lost some of it radical social ideals so it needed to be modernized to equate to a more contemporary audience. By braking away from outdated social standards the brand can be redefined as a radically and socially conscious clothing brand that uses its wealth, knowledge, and prestige to better humanity and all man kind.

OBJECTIVE Pick a Font that is relitively unknown and obscure. Explore what makes that font family unique and different from others. Take this information and creat a brochure and pdf that creative explores the unique qualities of the font family. Devlope a theme and have it carry through in the overall design.

SOLUTION Metro Nova started as a design dare and joke. Designed by Toshi Omagari’s, the font is a reinvention of the classic W.A. Dwiggins classic Metro. With this in mind, found a quote about how a well designed “e” looks like it’s smiling. I wanted to explore the fun and mischievous nature of this font and to create a dynamic and fun demonstration of the font’s merits.

CONCLUSION

|

THANK

YOU

I wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude and appreciation to all those who have helped me on this journey. Without a doubt, I would not have been able to achieve my goals without the support of these generous people. To my family, who have always been there for me and helped me to achieve my dreams. To my friends, without your understanding and willingness to help I would not have been able to survive. And finally, to my classmates and professors, thank you for guiding me and helping me to grow into the designer I am today. :)
