LETTER FROM THE FOUNDER & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR February 2017 is the one-year anniversary of our 501c3 status

The history, heritage and legacy that the Marsh Tacky represents for Daufuskie Island belongs to all of us and it should be celebrated by everyone!” @daufuskiemarshtackysociety

Your contributions have had a direct impact on the accomplishments we have been able to make. Also made possible thanks to your support during this formidable year was the careful selection of the next two horses to join our herd. These horses would be chosen based on their ideal Marsh Tacky characteristics and compatibility to be bred to Lucero, who is quickly maturing from a doe eyed little colt into becoming the father of the very first Marsh Tacky baby to be born on Daufuskie in decades. I made a phone call to Jeanette Beranger with the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy, who did the field work for the original DNA testing, research, record keeping and development of the Marsh Tacky stud book and registry as it stands today. Turns out her daughter is going away to college and she is looking to sell her two pedigree mares to the right home. We made the arrangements and in May, They were shipped from North Carolina to Daufuskie along with The Horse Tales TV entourage and the Pee Dee cowboy Mr. David Grant himself. Naturally we threw a party and made a few episodes out of it. Again, thanks to everyone who helped make that effort a success. Just as we were preparing for our fall line up of special events and programming, Hurricane Matthew sucker punched Daufuskie. We were also in the middle of a capital fundraising campaign for a horse trailer. The one I’d always had reserved for emergencies through a friend got pulled out from under me like a rug after Nikki Haley announced the mandatory evacuation. We made the executive decision to stay behind with our horses and rode out the storm with the rest of the “Daufuskie 100.”

Dear Donors, Sponsors, Partners, Volunteers, Friends, Family and Fur Babies, 2016 was our first full fiscal year. The previous year was defined by the formal incorporation of our organization in September, and the homecoming of the first two members of our herd to Daufuskie from Mr. DP Lowther’s farm in Ridgeland. Reina, then a yearling, and Lucero then just 4 months old, seem to have grown just as many leaps and bounds as the organization itself. Perhaps our most defining accomplishment was in February with the receipt of our IRS 501c3 award status. Looking back on the long and tedious application process I’m proud to say we are celebrating the one year anniversary of our charitable status this month. Now that this foundation for the organization has been laid, we have been able to build upon it by igniting new relationships across a wide landscape of donors, sponsors and partners.

Incredibly, but I suppose just like they did for hundreds of years here before we came along, the horses survived the Category 2 storm unscathed. The island did not fare as well. It took 2 months to clear the massive tree debris from our barn and pastures before we could move the horses back home from their temporary haven at Melrose. They say every rain cloud has a silver lining and I never really understood that until now. I’m very proud to be a part of the community that pulled together to help one another in our time of need. While the storm was devastating and damaged us in ways that can never be repaired, it has reoriented my priorities. I have a great deal of gratitude to be here and be able to contribute to this community in my work of protecting and preserving this little mustang which is about so much more than meets the eye. The history, heritage and legacy that the Marsh Tacky represents for Daufuskie Island belongs to all of us and it should be celebrated by everyone! Head Up and Heels Down, Erica

OUR MISSION, OBJECTIVES & OUTCOMES

Our mission is to promote and protect the critically endangered Marsh Tacky horse within the context of its historical roots on Daufuskie Island through breeding, training and sales plus educational and special events programming.”

OBJECTIVE 1. Daufuskie Marsh Tacky Breeding Program As there are only 400 in the world, the core of DMTS’s function is to grow the Marsh Tacky breed numbers until they are no longer an endangered species. We now have the foundation for a long term breeding program with the acquisition of one stallion and three mares who have been carefully selected for their ideal breed characteristics such as temperament, size, color and lineage to promote the integrity of the offspring and overall breeding stock future. OBJECTIVE 2. Daufuskie Marsh Tacky Training and Sales Program As the only organization to promote and protect the endangered Marsh Tacky horse in its natural habitat, our horse training programming adheres to the principles of Natural Horsemanship and takes advantage of Daufuskie Island’s natural resources and landscapes to produce talented, willing, well rounded horses which further promote and propagate the breed as they continue in their careers. OBJECTIVE 3. Daufuskie Marsh Tacky Road Show A traveling, experiential, show-and-tell history lesson for all ages of the general public in partnership with South Carolina institutions, museums, historic sites, public schools. Attendees learn about the history of South Carolina while following the Marsh Tacky and its contributions to development, transportation, agricultural and wartime efforts in history and throughout the state. Attendees get to meet and greet a Marsh Tacky.
