As part of the DDF Regeneration scheme for Devonshire Ward, Eastbourne Borough Council are running an innovative competition to find the freshest and funkiest beach hut designs. The five winning designs will be sited to the east of the pier. Four of the huts will be architect designed but we know that Eastbourne is just fizzing with imaginative and creative talent, which is why ONE OF THE HUTS WILL BE DESIGNED BY YOU! (Site 4). Read on to find out how to design and submit your entry with support from consultant architect Simon Barker.

Finding Ideas Go for a walk, switch off your brain and the ideas will flow! Think about different materials and textures Think about local architecture and historical buildings

Look at natural shapes and materials… pebbles, shells, driftwood…

Google the word ‘huts’ and see what images come up! Still stuck? – then come to one of our workshops – see overleaf

Things to do Photograph or draw as many different building materials as you can find

Imagine if your hut were an animal, what would it be?

Photograph as many different product materials you can find (from bubblewrap to rubber tyres).

Think of structures along the seafront as events in a narrative – what kind of event might your hut be?

Go on to the beach and collect whatever interesting bits and pieces you can find. Make a 3D structure from them. Photograph it. Think of your favourite pudding: design a building inspired by its shapes, textures, ingredients, colours, smells etc.

(Throw away any man-made materials you collect in a rubbish bin afterwards).

Bring your photographs and ideas to one of the workshops – see overleaf

Competition Guidelines There are two categories in the competition, one for registered architects to submit designs for one of the four huts that will be designated as concessions or personal rentals and one for members of the community to submit designs for a designated community project hut to be sited opposite the Treasure Island car park. Once the winning design is installed, the council will seek proposals from community arts groups to manage an initial two-year programme of arts and education activities in the hut.
