I

t’s a month later than we anticipated, but the long awaited third issue is here. After an August filled with swimsuits and a September loaded with hiccups, we’re happy that we have caught up with ourselves. As many of you know, we held a contest to determine the first Snap Girl of 2012. There were a few twists and turns during the contest, but we were able to clear things up quickly and bring you a beauty selected by a panel of 15 judges who are respected in their field of interest. Northern California model, Kate Bryant was elected the winner followed by runner ups, Meredith Haleigh of Texas and Stacey Scott of New York. n this Issue: It’s not quite how we initially envisioned the look of this issue, but we are happy with the results all the same. Being that a good portion of autumn and winter holidays would fall within the final quarter of the

year, we decided to make this a Holiday Issue. But not just your ordinary feel good, average Norman Rockwell version of the holidays; something darker.

Instead we are going to continue to publish quarterly, but we are going to publish an occasional special edition with a specific focus. T h i s par ticular photo shoot c o n c ept was a male nymph, k i n d of on the nude side, and I w a s the makeup ar tist. T h i s par ticular shoot required t h at I be close to the genital a r e a to airbr ush and add ver y s m a l l appliques. Before I go a n y fur ther I have 7/16 gauged o u t holes in my ears and the m a l e model had a horseshoe p i e rc ing in his private par t. We l l I was adding the appliques w i t h tweezers, really close to t h i s area and the photographer c a l l s me about papers. As I t u r n ed my head rather quickly m y e ar got stuck to the mode l ’s penis. I was stuck. 6

We g e t t o t h e l o c at i o n a n d s h e is still trying to get her makeup


d o n e. I wait patiently for her, g o i n g through wardrobe etc. C o m e 1pm she f inally f inishes. S h e t h en asked if we could s h o o t after I picked up my k i d s. I agreed. We drove to my h o u s e. We took about 15 shots i n f ro n t of my garage with 1 of t h e o u t f its we had planned. I p i c k e d up my kids from school t h e n w e drove back to the lo c at i o n . She tells me on the way t h e r e t hat her train comes in at 5 : 3 0 pm. I double checked o n m y phone for her just to c o n f i r m the arrival time. Her t r a i n a ctually arrived at 4pm. T h at g ave us an hour, includ i n g d r i ve time. S h e t h en asked me if I could t a k e h er back to the train sta t i o n a n d then told me that she d i d n ’t have any money for the train. She was counting on t h e m oney she was going to ma k e f rom the shoot to pay for h e r t i c ket. I paid her for one h o u r o f her time to cover the t r a i n t icket even though we o n l y s h ot for 15 minutes. S h e e mailed me that night sayi n g t h at she felt so bad, and wa n t e d to wor k something o u t w i th her rate because we d i d n ’t get any of t he shots for t h e s u bmission. Her idea of wo r k i n g something out of her r at e w as to deduct what I paid h e r f ro m a future shoot. I e m a i l ed her a couple of the e d i t e d images from the 15 mi n u t e session we shot, and I me n t i o ned that one of the im ag e s w ould look fabulous on a t - s h i r t (it reminde d me of the o l d p u nk bands sh ir ts). About 2 m o n t hs later she asked if she c o u l d s ell that image on shir ts, a n d s h e would give me a perc e n t o f the sales. I declined a n d t o l d her that if I chose to

prof it o f f t h at i m ag e a n d d e cided to s e l l p r i n t s, t - s h i r t s, o r whateve r, i t w o u l d b e m y d e c i sion to d o s o. S h e t h e n a s k e d if she w o u l d g e t a p e rc e n t . We s et the time for an eve n i n g , only didn’t think about t h e weather. Of course it was s t o r ming all week prior to our s h o o t so it was nice and chilly. I d rove two hours to photog r a p h er Jessie Alford’s house w h e r e we planned to shoot in h i s b asement and crawl space. We were wor king with the b e s t resources we could at the t i m e. Last minute shoots are a l w ays interesting. I g o t dressed and f inished m a k e -up and hai r, then off we w e n t to the basement. Jess i e b egan cutting my pants and s h i r t , then star ted r ubbing art i f i c i al blood on me. It actual l y g ave me an awesome feeling o f b e ing lost and scared with n o w ay out. N ow for the week prior to t h e shoot, and the day of, I w a s tr ying to f i gure out how I w a s going to do this. How t o a c t scared and vengeful at t h e s ame time. T his was all u n k n own territo r y for me, so I w a s ner vous to see how I w o u l d perfor m.

We se t u p t h e l i g h t i n g a s b e s t as we c o u l d , l o o k e d at e a c h other a n d s a i d , “ l e t s d o t h i s ! ” I then b eg a n c r aw l i n g m y w ay under a n d ov e r h u g e p i p e s, dir t, b u g s, d e s p i t e t r y i n g t o remai n a s c a l m a n d fo c u s e d a s i could . I t w a s a l s o v e r y c o l d due to t h e f r e e z i n g w e at h e r ! “Light s, c a m e r a , a c t i o n ! ” I choke d . I w a s h av i n g a p ro blem ac t i n g s c a r e d a n d f r i g h tened. A f t e r a c o u p l e m i n u t e s of con f u s i o n , I b eg a n t o l a u g h . A f t e r about 1 0 - 1 5 m i n u t e s o f s h o o ting, w e b o t h f i n a l l y g av e u p and de c i d e d t o m ov e t o t h e bloodi e r p a r t o f t h e s h o o t . It is a lot harder than one might think, let me tell you! By the end of the shoot, and t o m at o s a u c e, I r e a l l y c o u l d n ’t h av e g o t t e n a n y d i r t i e r. I w a s a f i l t hy m e s s ! T h e n i t h i t m e. “ H ow d o I c l e a n o f f ? ” Wa l ki n g t h ro u g h h i s h o u s e w a s j u s t not an option. So my bright idea led us to the garden hose o u t s i d e. I w a s a l r e a d y f roze n t o t h e b o n e, s o h ow m u c h w o rs e c o u l d t h e h o s e b e ? E v e r y o n e g av e m e a n o d d l o o k and said, “O -- k!” Shaking and shivering, we washed the s a u c e a n d d i r t o ff m y f a c e a n d b o d y. I t h e n q u i c k l y fo u n d a w a r m t ow e l a n d c l e a n c l o t h e s ! O n c e c l e a n e d u p, I g av e m yself a little time to warm up t h e n b a c k i n t h e c a r fo r a t w o h o u r d r i v e h o m e. I’m more than positive I w a s n ’t t h e m o s t a m a z i n g m o d e l t h at n i g h t , b u t Je s s e w a s v e r y p at i e n t w i t h m e t h e w h o l e t i m e. A holiday is supposed to be a day, or days, out of the year when we can look back and remember a notable event recorded in history. Some of us will even celebrate the day with traditions directly associated with the holiday, while others may choose to look beyond specific holidays and wait for one that is more appropriate to their personal

interest. Regardless, all major holidays are forced into the consumer’s face. That’s everyone! With that over-exposure accepted in society, new holidays are fabricated out of thin air in the modern, and heavily commercialized, world. For example, parodic holidays are becoming immensely popular. International Talk Like a Pirate Day happens every September 19th, and Star Wars geeks have claimed May 4 as their holiday every year. May the 4th be with you! In this issue, we have dedicated a few of the segments to play off of popular autumn and winter holidays. It is an edgier look into the typical way we observe the holidays. We hope you enjoy them.

In this edition of Concept Cool, we aim to bring forth a somewhat edgier side of the typical holidays as most Americans know them. Holidays have become so commercialized that most of us view them in a way that require us to act in accordance to the way the media and big merchandising marketing firms expect us to act.

O v er time, many variations to t h e tale have come about, but i n all versions the detail behind t h e secret of the ribbon is al w ays the same. “ T he shoot is based on a stor y w hich terrif ied me as a little g i r l.” Model, Rowen Bellamy ex plains. “It is about a little girl w i th a ribbon wrapped around h e r neck. As she grows up, the l i t t le boy who loves her asks d a i ly why she wears the ribbon a round her neck. T hey event u ally they grow up and marr y e a ch other, and they lived long a n d healthy together. On her d e ath bed, she showed him why s h e wore the r ibbon. W h i l e this production was fairly len g t hy, i t w a s quite a bit fun. Moreover, it wa s n ’t t o o d i f f i cult f inding volunteers to become t h e u n d e a d . T he power of networ king is a wo n d e r f u l t h i n g. We knew right up front who we w a n t e d fo r o ur zombie feast (model, Shaina D o l l ) , a n d w e knew who we wanted to shoot it ( p h o t o g r a p h er, Edwin Rivas), but the original zo m b i e c a s t changed within a week of plann i n g. O f c o u rse this is nothing new when it c o m e s t o p l a n ning a shoot, we all know that o f t e n w e h av e to wing it, or force something unin t e n d e d . O n e of the replacement cast members, M a r i e s a C r a mer, was an actual Quinceanera M ag a z i n e c ov e r model (Miss Cover Girl 2011) pi c k e d u p l a s t minute due to previous talent bow i n g o u t . S h e was super excited for the oppor tun i t y. H e r c o u s in, Anyssa Perez, had no idea sh e w o u l d b e t r ansfor med into a walker when

s h e d e c i d e d t o v i s i t w i t h f a m i l y fo r t h e d ay, b u t s h e q u i c k l y fo u n d h e rs e l f i n t h e m a k e u p c h a i r. T h e phrase Actuall y Ashley was u s e d so many times throughout the s h o o t of this Snap Girl segment t h at it only seemed appropriate as t h e title of her pictorial. We tested a few potential models fo r the Snap Girl segment for this i s s u e, but the ver y minute Ashley i n t roduced herself to us, we were s m i t ten with her char m. T his girl i s a super star! Well she is going to b e a nyway. A s h l ey is a West Virginia native c h i l l in’ out on the west coast tr yi n g t o make a name for herself. She i s s o mewhat of a nomad, searching fo r her celebrit y status in a state t h at can make dreams of ultimate s t a r dom happen. Her level of am b i t i o n is remar kable. an de muertos (bread for the dead), chocolate caliente (hot chocolate), a plate of chicken mole , calaveras de azucar (sugar skulls), a bottle of tequila, marigolds all around, mariachi music playing in the background, a night at the cemetery …. A NIGHT AT THE CEMETARY??? Yes! I said the cemetery. Not your typical trick-or-treating night at all, nor your local Mexican food restaurant for that matter. One of the most celebrated festivals in Mexico is Dia de los Muertos. With a history like the one this holiday has and art that is well -- to die for, it’s no wonder people still celebrate it, and honor it, with artistic views. Brief History: Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a time in which Mexicans celebrate and honor their loved ones that have passed on. It is believed that on the first day of November, the spirits of the dead return to visit their family and friends to make sure that they have not been forgotten. The celebration, or ritual per say, has been

going on since before the Aztec Empire. It has, however, been modified throughout the years, and is primarily referenced back to the Aztecs. The Aztecs believed that people and spirits of the dead co-existed, and that the spirits roamed the earth. On the 9th-10th month of the Aztec Calendar, the Aztecs would remember or commemorate those that had passed on to another life (Aztecs believed that people’s bodies would die, but the spirits would travel the earth or “reincarnate” into something else depending on how they died) by harvesting fruits vegetables and flowers and presenting them to the spirits. In addition, like many other civilizations around the world, people throughout Mexico believed that there were Gods for everything from the sun, to the wind, to the dead. The God of death was known as Mictlantecuhtli. The Aztecs feared him, however did not believe he was evil as he was the creator of life and death. When the Spanish Invaded and conquered the new world, they imposed the Roman Catholic beliefs. Since the Spanish had a similar celebration, All Saint’s Days, and All Soul’s Days, on November 1st and 2nd, with time, both celebrations combined, and the celebration is now celebrated in October/November, instead of September/October.

To this day, people still celebrate this holiday with the same enthusiasm and similar rituals, although some things vary depending on the region of Mexico. For the most part, however, cemeteries are filled with fresh flowers, food, and music, friends and families as they wait for their families to “arrive.” Building altars is another way families honor the person that has died. Altars are then adorned with flowers, pictures, candles, food, and other items of importance depending on what the person who passed away liked or was remembered for. Children make, eat, and/or trade calaveras de azucar, people recite calaveritas, which are funny poems that make fun of death, or make it seem as though death is not taboo.

Dia de los Muertos is such an inspiring holiday, that it brings out the most excellent, darkest, side of artists. Such was the case of Jose Guadalupe Posada, who although died in poverty, is now famous for his Calaveras including his Calavera de la Catrina, folk art, which is basically the face of Dia de los Muertos. Furthermore, Jose Guadalupe Posada’s work was such a great inspiration to Jose Clemente Orozco, a social realist muralist, during the Mexican Revolution. His murals were based on human suffering, which you can see in the faces, who although are of live people, look “dead-like,” or “calaveralike” from the oppression the people of that time were encountering. Lastly,

W hen Derlie R a mos, A.K.A. Mistress Derl i e, approached us and pitched t h e idea for our Fall Issue, we ag r eed. o metimes the most frighte n ing thing o f all about N e w Years Day is the hang ov e r from the celebration t h e n i ght before. Some of u s p l a n weeks ahead to make r e s o l u tions for the coming y e a r. W hether it be a diet, m o r e exercise, get organ i ze d , or set goals to accomp l i s h great things, it is typi c a l l y something we plan to i m p rove ourselves. As soon a s t h e f irst day of the new y e a r comes, we’re instantly g o i n g to transfor m our lives i n a p ositive way. Yet it is t h at day of the year we of t e n f e el the worst . How mo t i v at e d can a person be when t h ey f eel like they have been s l e e p i ng under a bridge the n i g h t before. It is probably t h e m ost popular day out of t h e y ear where a plan fails. G e t t i ng off to a poor star t to i m p roving is often the killer o f g o od intentions.

M a n y people, including my s e l f, f ind away around this p ro b l e m by making New Ye a rs Day exempt from their r e s o l u tion plans. It’s almost a s i f Januar y 1st is actually D e c e mber 32nd. It’s kind of c h e at i ng, but it is an accept a b l e a lter native, for many of u s a n yway, to execute a plan t h at i s destined to fail before i t s t a r ts. And you know how t h e p opular saying goes... “ Fa i l i ng to plan is planning t o f a i l !” H av e a happy ev e r y one!
