- CONCERTO for Percussion and Orchestra

Performance Notes • Double Basses without a low C extension may play one octave higher, but all basses with the extension should play the written pitches. • Tam-Tam and Suspended Cymbal notes marked with three or four piano’s should be barely audible – only a subtle and almost imperceptible textural coloring. • Slurs in the Vibraphone (Percussion 1) part indicate pedaling as well as phrasing. The pedal should be depressed for the duration of the slur and should be held until the symbol appears, indicating to raise the pedal. • A small bracket placed in front of dynamic markings indicates that the dynamics apply to both staves.

Notes on the Percussion Solo Part • Sections for Marimba utilize the traditional grand staff while sections for Percussion are notated according to the Notation Map below. • Throughout the piece, individual cups of the bell tree should be struck with a triangle beater according to the relative pitch level of the notes on the staff. • The “Bells” may be any sort of suspended resonating metal instrument with significant sustain and should be graduated in pitch from low to high. • In the Cadenza, a second voice is used to indicate accents that outline the main motif. This second voice does not indicate two sticks striking one drum simultaneously. • A small bracket placed in front of dynamic markings indicates that the dynamics apply to both staves.

Solo Percussion Notation Map

Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra was premiered on February 7, 2008 by the USC Thornton Symphony under the direction of Dr. Donald Crockett with the composer as soloist. It has since been selected as a winner of the 2008 ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Awards.
