Program Note “Mie” is a highly intense and
emotional pose struck in traditional Japanese Kabuki theatre that signifies the height of tension and drama. A mie pose typically involves swinging the head, taking a large step forward, spreading the arms, and often, crossing the eyes. The actor strikes the pose and then freezes briefly, at which point all other actors on the stage also stop their movements; the full attention of the audience and actors alike is focused on the mie pose.

Notes on the Logtone The “logtone” is a composite instrument made by placing five graduated brake drums in-between six individual graduated log drums pitches. From player one’s perspective, the instrument should look vaguely like this:
Six individual log drum pitches are ideal, but three two-note log drums may be substituted if individual single-pitch log drums are unavailable. The logtone is played both by both players individually but is also played simultaneously from both sides by both players. When played individually by either player, the notation for the instrument is as indicated above. At measure 69, player 1 plays only the log drums while player 2 plays only the brake drums while standing on the opposite side of the instrument. For this section, the notation of the brake drums in the part only is reversed so that the ascent of written pitches will follow a left-to-right motion. It should be noted that for the performer, the sounding pitches will be contrary to the notation for only this section. At measure 120, player 2 is instructed to “move to Logtone position,” at which point he or she moves to the other side of the instrument while rolling on the highest brake drum. When the indication “Logtone” is given the following measure, the notation now conforms with the above notation diagram.
Further Percussion Notes Both players are instructed to strike log drums in their “dead zone.” The dead zone is the area of the drum opposite the slit where a thin, woodblock-like “thwack” sound is produced when struck, lacking the fundamental and overtones of the log drum pitch. This is indicated with a + symbol over the notes intended to be played in the dead zone. At measure 204, player 1 is instructed to insert a damper release into the chimes. The player should depress the pedal and insert a small object, such as a drum tuning key, against the sustaining bar so that from that point on, the bars ring freely without the need to depress the pedal. Player 2 is often required to play the Tam-tam with little preparation time following passages on different instruments. To facilitate the difficulty of mallet changes, the player may hang the tam-tam beater on the frame of the stand. When a quick note is called for, the player can lift and drop the suspended beater without having to put down his or her other mallets. The symbol is used to indicate dampening of both the chimes and the tam-tam. The sound of each instrument should be stopped precisely on the rest over which the symbol is written.
