CONVENTION UPDATE
G
reetings Sumner Alumni and Friends, (I know that you were not expecting to see me here on p. 1 of this newsletter issue, but the following comes to you at the request of President Rev. Chauncey R. Black. Look for Pres. Black’s greetings on p. 2.) Your All-Sumner Convention EventPlanning Chairpersons are serious about making the upcoming convention a first -class affair! In our 5-hour meeting in late March, we were able to tie up a lot of loose ends and to share our visions for each convention event, so that we could all see the “big picture” and how our assignments help to complete “the whole”. Eighteen competent and committed Sumnerites and their committees are working hard for you. As you see in the 6-page convention section of this newsletter, all we need now IS YOU! ... Well, I should say, you and your convention registration money :). We are now at the positions in which we must make deposits and see what incidentals we might be able to provide to you. PLEASE let us know that you intend to participate in this 2015 Convention by sending us your completed registration form ASAP. Even if you are choosing to wait until just a bit later to make your payment, please complete and send in your form so that we will have some numbers on which to base our budget. Plan to “be there” for Opening Night on Thursday, Sept. 24 th because you really don’t want to miss anything. That evening, you will greet more than 30 of our Sumner HS and Northeast Jr. faculty and staff who have already RSVP’d to join us. This event is chaired by Carolyn Mitchell(Carolyn_Mitchell344@yahoo.com). The banquet, that same evening, chaired by Deloris Strickland Pinkard, Sharon Keith Wooten, and Debra Jones Norman, will also have a special
presentation that you should not miss! ALSO, make your hotel room reservations early so tha t you will receive the hotel’s excellent group rate for us. Just make the contact as shown in the “Convention Section” of this newsletter using your credit card to reserve your occupancy; no payment required until your arrival. FOLLOWING is brief information that you will want to know concerning each convention area. 1) See insert (orange-bordered) for date, location and review of other details. 2) Convention registration, chaired by Bettye Maddox ( bettye64055@aol.com) begins at 10 AM on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2015 at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Overland Park, KS. 3) WHAT TO WEAR?... WHAT TO WEAR?... WHAT TO WEAR?
None of our 2015 Convention events will be designated as formal, though you may choose formal attire at your discretion. For the evening events, we suggest nice dresses, dressy slacks, or suits for both men and ladies. The same would apply for Worship, chaired by Deloris Strickland Pinkard (depinkard@gmail.com). (We request NO

large hats with more than 2.5” to 3” brims at Worship, so as not to block others’ views in the banquet style seating we have reserved for combined Farewell Breakfast, chaired by Valera Richmond Jefferson, and our Worship Service.) All other daytime events are recommended as casual. Again, YOU decide. Just do ARRIVE! 4) We are looking for VENDORS who would like to display and sell their K.C. merchandise during Convention, thereby providing for your “shopping experience”, especially for those who will be joining us from out of town. Please pass the word and have potential vendors contact Debra Jones Norman (dejnorman@yahoo.com) if interested. 5) We are asking everyone to help get souvenirs and give-a-ways for inclusion in our very special convention bags. We offer our sincere appreciation to Robert Davis of Thatcher’s Funeral Home for his generous offer to share equally with us in the cost of our Convention bags to be provided to each fully-participating registrant. See your bank, credit union, Chambers of Commerce, insurance companies, and others with whom you do business for contributions of items to include. Whatever you get from them and in whatever quantities will be appreciated and put to use. Contact Thomas Gordon (teehgee@gmail.com) . 6) See the 6-page convention section to check out the DVDs that are available for you to own! Added to the past conventions DVDs are 2 more DVDs you will want. They include the tour of the KCK/Sumner Community, narrated by Chester Owens and supplemented by photos of most of the schools, churches, homes, and businesses that used to be there. The other new DVD being offered is of the Sumner Alumni Room with descriptions, explanations, and stories that accompany the many historical items, and narrated by Granvile O’Neal and Chester Owens. (Sharing these- and buttered popcorn with our progeny will make for some interesting and fun “Family Nights” to enjoy.) Just order the DVDs per the (Continued on Page 3)

H
opefully, everyone will visit the Sumner High School Memorial Marker during the 2015 “Sumner in the City” Convention. You will be astonished with the expansion that will be made prior to the event. Come out and tour the site. Take the time to review our legacy, reminisce about “our moment in time”. Think of all of the relationships that we encountered, the experiences that we shared, and the achievements that were accomplished. The Historical Marker was built to be a constant reminder of the great and unique school we attended, a school that holds a special place in the hearts of many. In order to add another panel to the marker, we must have enough contributors to donate toward the effort. More emphasis will be placed on this matter during the convention. Hope to see you in September! Adrienne Williams-Patterson Co-Chair—Memorial Marker

r. Gladys Gossett Hankins, a.k.a. GiGi Gossett, has authored both non-fiction and fiction. Her first book, Diversity B lues, How to S hake ‘Em, is a compelling look at race and gender issues in organizations and what to do about them. Her successful first mystery, B y A ny Other Nam e, spurred her interest in continuing in this genre. In her latest release, T he M idwif e Factor, she tells the story of twins who, although separated at birth and knowing nothing of each other while growing up on different continents, have experienced twin telepathy all their lives. At 19, they both face danger as they attempt to find their way back to each other with the help of a savvy private investigator and the midwife who brought them into this world. GiGi was interested in the subject of twin telepathy because of twins in her own family. It is believed her sisters, to whom this book is dedicated shared this same fascinating phenomenon. The book signing was held in April 7, 2015 at the Wyandotte West Library. GiGi Gossett is the pen name of the Kansas City, KS native. Hankins, an internationally recognized speaker and consultant on diversity and organizational effectiveness, spent the majority of her career as an executive with Procter and Gamble and currently is president of management consulting firm, Telora Victor, Inc. A graduate of Sumner High School and Rockhurst University, she holds a PhD in Organizational Behavior and Development from Union Institute and University.

PAST PRESIDENT’S YEAR-END REPORT
he Closing of the Past President’s terms of office concluded at the end of 2014. Satisfactory accomplishment of 12 goals set in 2011 was reported at the final 2014 meeting on November 22nd. The 13th goal, still incomplete, is that of acquiring a location/building of our own for the display of Sumner HS artifacts (Alumni Room); for holding meetings; and/or for hosting social events and educational services. Grant monies investigated have not been fruitful, nor has there been general agreement among the general membership to make such pursuit. There are, however, several investigations currently being explored by alumni supportive of this endeavor. The transition of the office of president has been accomplished during the month of January, via e-mails and during the 2 (plus) hour, face-toface between the incoming and outgoing presidents. The meeting concluded with both parties looking forward to serving the Sumner Alumni Association in their new roles. Dr. Deloris Strickland Pinkard SHSAA President, 2011-2014 4

NEWS FROM THE SUMNER ACADEMY SABRES
IN MEMORY
Hello Friends, Family, and Educational Advocates, I am coming to you because, in the past, you have proven to be supportive of our Sumner students and families. I could really use your help. Please take a moment to read my message & determine how you can become part of the solution to our problem, no matter how BIG or small… As you may know, the Kansas House of Representatives introduced, held hearings on, passed and sent to the senate a new school finance plan. The two-year plan, initially proposed by Governor Brownback in January, would eliminate the current school finance system, and fund schools for 2015 -16 and 2016-17 with a block grant based on current year’s funding. Included in the new plan, no new money would be available for districts whose enrollment increased, or who were serving students with additional needs. Our enrollment at Sumner has, and WILL continue to increase. I have the largest 8 th grade class on record & based on the projected figures, anticipate the same size coming in next year. Being an Academy school, of our 900 students, we serve nearly 400 requiring “additional needs” that their current home school can’t meet (Gifted, International Baccalaureate) – which explains why students are coming to Sumner in droves. Bottom line: our campus will have to function with less money and more students. Part of our plan to help our new students transition more successfully to our school. As you can imagine, being a top ranked school in Kansas, we have very high expectations and many students enter with the “smarts” yet are without the foundational organizational, time management, and study skills needed to be successful. Starting immediately, we are implementing a new program which includes a binder system that we will use to help build organization and responsibility. In time, we hope to grow into the adoption of the entire AVID program – another amazing opportunity that may go unfunded (that concern is for another time & another day) … With the state of our budget, funds are tight. So, we’ve created a Donors Choose project to help fund this! Please share the link with anyone/everyone who cares to see good students become GREAT! It works & you can help! **IN ADDITION: if you use the promo code “spark” - the Spark foundation will match any donation.
