reetings Sumner Alumni and Friends, (I know that you were not expecting to see me here on p. 1 of this newsletter issue, but the following comes to you at the request of President Rev. Chauncey R. Black. Look for Pres. Black’s greetings on p. 2.) Your All-Sumner Convention EventPlanning Chairpersons are serious about making the upcoming convention a first -class affair! In our 5-hour meeting in late March, we were able to tie up a lot of loose ends and to share our visions for each convention event, so that we could all see the “big picture” and how our assignments help to complete “the whole”. Eighteen competent and committed Sumnerites and their committees are working hard for you. As you see in the 6-page convention section of this newsletter, all we need now IS YOU! ... Well, I should say, you and your convention registration money :). We are now at the positions in which we must make deposits and see what incidentals we might be able to provide to you. PLEASE let us know that you intend to participate in this 2015 Convention by sending us your completed registration form ASAP. Even if you are choosing to wait until just a bit later to make your payment, please complete and send in your form so that we will have some numbers on which to base our budget. Plan to “be there” for Opening Night on Thursday, Sept. 24 th because you really don’t want to miss anything. That evening, you will greet more than 30 of our Sumner HS and Northeast Jr. faculty and staff who have already RSVP’d to join us. This event is chaired by Carolyn Mitchell(Carolyn_Mitchell344@yahoo.com). The banquet, that same evening, chaired by Deloris Strickland Pinkard, Sharon Keith Wooten, and Debra Jones Norman, will also have a special

presentation that you should not miss! ALSO, make your hotel room reservations early so tha t you will receive the hotel’s excellent group rate for us. Just make the contact as shown in the “Convention Section” of this newsletter using your credit card to reserve your occupancy; no payment required until your arrival. FOLLOWING is brief information that you will want to know concerning each convention area. 1) See insert (orange-bordered) for date, location and review of other details. 2) Convention registration, chaired by Bettye Maddox ( bettye64055@aol.com) begins at 10 AM on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2015 at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Overland Park, KS. 3) WHAT TO WEAR?... WHAT TO WEAR?... WHAT TO WEAR?

None of our 2015 Convention events will be designated as formal, though you may choose formal attire at your discretion. For the evening events, we suggest nice dresses, dressy slacks, or suits for both men and ladies. The same would apply for Worship, chaired by Deloris Strickland Pinkard (depinkard@gmail.com). (We request NO

large hats with more than 2.5” to 3” brims at Worship, so as not to block others’ views in the banquet style seating we have reserved for combined Farewell Breakfast, chaired by Valera Richmond Jefferson, and our Worship Service.) All other daytime events are recommended as casual. Again, YOU decide. Just do ARRIVE! 4) We are looking for VENDORS who would like to display and sell their K.C. merchandise during Convention, thereby providing for your “shopping experience”, especially for those who will be joining us from out of town. Please pass the word and have potential vendors contact Debra Jones Norman (dejnorman@yahoo.com) if interested. 5) We are asking everyone to help get souvenirs and give-a-ways for inclusion in our very special convention bags. We offer our sincere appreciation to Robert Davis of Thatcher’s Funeral Home for his generous offer to share equally with us in the cost of our Convention bags to be provided to each fully-participating registrant. See your bank, credit union, Chambers of Commerce, insurance companies, and others with whom you do business for contributions of items to include. Whatever you get from them and in whatever quantities will be appreciated and put to use. Contact Thomas Gordon (teehgee@gmail.com) . 6) See the 6-page convention section to check out the DVDs that are available for you to own! Added to the past conventions DVDs are 2 more DVDs you will want. They include the tour of the KCK/Sumner Community, narrated by Chester Owens and supplemented by photos of most of the schools, churches, homes, and businesses that used to be there. The other new DVD being offered is of the Sumner Alumni Room with descriptions, explanations, and stories that accompany the many historical items, and narrated by Granvile O’Neal and Chester Owens. (Sharing these- and buttered popcorn with our progeny will make for some interesting and fun “Family Nights” to enjoy.) Just order the DVDs per the (Continued on Page 3)
