THE DRIFT

We are all homeless in one way or another, but always forget how we can rely on the anchor of the other. Trying to save things that we keep and for no reason we drown ourselves in a sea full of meaningful insignificance. Tested by the force of the tempest we let ourselves be carried, we accept to be part of something mutable and we understand that movement is the keyword for improvement. So we keep everything inside this fragile paper-thin and somehow, somehow we are protected.

The Salt Path was a project developed by searching drift objects in the city of Madrid, the objects were cataloged and placed in such a way that the objects that float are hanged, and the ones that drown are on the floor.

T H E S A LT RUN THROUGH MY VEINS

6

THIS IS WHERE IT ALL STARTED

The ocean is a big part of me. A big part of my life. The salty waters run through my veins getting along with my blood. And it hurts. It hurts so be aware of how we are treating our ocean. How we are misguided by the temptation of making an aseptic world, a world where we take natural covers of fruits, wrap them in plastic and sell on the supermarket and think is perfectly normal. It hurts to see our behavior get more and more far of the nature of men. Don’t get me wrong, i am in favor of evolution, and the great things that the technology can do for us, but there is always a way to be better, without destroying the other. And that is what i will try to explain you how with this project.

THE GOAL Create a process to create a technological product which the structure is made 100% of recycled plastic.

THE OBSTACLE Make the structure of the product simple and possible to make with non high- industrial machines.

THE RISK The process can be harmful for people, the process must be the most safe possible.

ALTERNATIVE ONE WAS TO CREATE A PIPE FORM SIMULATING A REEF STRUCTURE IN A VERY MINIMALISTIC WAY. THE MODULARITY IDEA WAS TO CONNECT THEM FROM THE LEGS TO CREATE THE TESSELLATION.

26

27

A LT E R N A T I V E 2

ALTERNATIVE TWO WAS TO FOLLOW THE TRUNCATED OCTAHEDRON FORM CREATING A FULL EDGED GEOMETRICAL TESSELLATION.

28

MODELS

EXTRUDED OCTAHEDRON Made from 4 modules that are made from 3 other modules. Would work well to be the power source and attach the other modules

Both alternatives Could be applicable to create plastic plaques and assemble them to form the module.

29

MODELS

T R U N C AT E D OCTAHEDRON Applicable to be the attached modules to the source, made from plastic plaques united by an intern membrane.

Uniting the layers by joints the module would be easy assembled and disassembled. The users could make their own plastic plaques and attach to the membrane to customize the object.

30

MODELS

MAGNETIC ASSEMBLED OCTAHEDRON Following the same premises of the membrane structure, the magnetic assembled model uses a magnetic membrane to attach the plastic plaques and unite the other modules together.

Conclusion: The cubical structural is not likely to be applicable to the material. There where not found ways to make a strong, sustainable and doable structure with the melted plastic without injection. The magnetic membrane does not have enough strength.

31

S IM P L I FY

Simplifying is the key to achieve the very best the material and the structure can offer. The simplification of the form without losing the concept of the space filling geometry is the way to improve structure and technology together.

USING THE HONEYCOMB EXTRUDED FORM IT WILL BE POSSIBLE TO USE THE FULL PERFORMANCE OF THE MATERIAL FOR THE CASING. STRONG, FLEXIBLE AND WATER RESISTANT WILL BE JUST A FEW OF THE FEATURES OF THE DEVICE.

34

STRUCTURE

Base structured to hold the microchip with a connector to the receptor pod. Top part.

35

T E CH N O LOGY

The challenge was to connect each module easily, so there is just one energy and signal source, and this energy passes by the other pods through a simple and no plug process.

36

DEVELOPMENT

SOURCE MODULE The first try was to use already fabricated Little Bits brand “Snapbits to validate the possibility of passing the signal.

Since the format of the energy snaps Did not adapted well to the form of the product not giving much signal and not having enough magnetic strength, it was developed a unique energy snap model specifically for this product.

37

ASSEMBLING

UNIQUE PCB MODULE To grant that the assembly will be simplified and the connection could come from the three ports, it was developed a special Printed Circuit Board to distribute the energy right.

The circuit is made from one layer of polymer in the middle of two layers of conductive material. The circuit is designed and then “printed on the milling machine.

This way is possible to organize the wires and make all circuits fit inside the casing.

The HDPE plastic is extremely flexible when heated at 170 °C. The regular casting process is not possible since the plastic is not on a liquid form, is more like a rubber. The mold must be hard with materials like wood, metal or concrete. The wood holds the temperature for longer giving more time to work with the plastic.

41

PROCESS

42

43

FINISHINGS

R A W S TAT E After the molding the plastic is in a raw state keeping its real form underneath a glossy layer. A simple refining process by sanding is made.

The sanding is not for giving any shape or fixing anything in the casing, is just to remove the thin layer that covers the real magic inside the plastic mixing.

44

45

THE TOOLS

RUDIMENTARY The tools chosen to make the models are rudimentary and simple. The mold and counter mold where made in plywood cut on the laser machine. The counter mold to make the inside hole can be substituted by a simple steel cupcake form. The inside shape may vary depending the objectives on the electronics.

46

LEFTOVERS

UNLIMITED CYCLES All the leftovers after the finishings are kept to be used on further models. The advantage in working with HDPE is that the process can be repeated until the success without having to pass through a whole process to reuse.

RAW AND PRECISE The process brings the discarded plastic to a whole new state, to a unexpected texture making what once was a leftover from our day by day life become a fine and precise design piece.

The hidden properties of the mixed plastic bring a marble stone look to the object giving the cut edges more impact.

54

55

TECH AND ORGANIC The clash between a raw and chaotic material with the precision of the metal, and the electronic products bring a whole new view for how a technological product should be like, and be produced.

56

V E R T I C A L A S S E M B LY 57

MODULARITY The honeycomb precision geometry allows to make infinite combinations to increase the power of the sound. The geometry applied to the distinct aesthetics effects creates a an organic yet geometric space filling object.

58

MODULARITY Multi-directional assembly is one of the best proprieties that the geometry brings to the interaction. The tessellation possibilities are almost unlimited either vertical or horizontal..

59

FULL CONNECTION The devices work with a source of energy and signal, this source passes the signal to the others by the energy magnetic snaps. The final user just needs one signal source and the other devices are just amplifiers.

In order to expand the product ranges and

E X PA N SI O N empower people to make their own casings O F L I F E TI M E made of plastic trash, the initiative would take a step further and offer maker kits for product hackability and upgrading. The users will be able to upgrade battery power, sound amplification, speaker and wire quality.

62

MAKER KIT With the maker kit the consumer will be able to create their own casing for the Complementary modules upgrading the product to the desired scale.

INSTRUCTION GUIDE The instruction guide would bring all the steps for molding, safety tips and processes to make and assemble the modules.

64

HACKABILITY The product is completely hackable. The circuits are simple and easy to attach. For the expansion of the product spectrum, the brand will not just sell the product itself but also the components to hack it and upgrade it.
