The Michael Kors Building at God’s Love We Deliver
WE’RE HOME! T
IN THIS ISSUE
he past two months have been an exceptionally exciting time for all of us at God’s Love We Deliver. Spirits are high in SoHo, and we are delighted to finally be in our new home. We are so grateful to all of our generous supporters and our amazing volunteers who helped make this possible. The opening of the Michael Kors Building at God’s Love We Deliver marks the end of a massive project and collaborative effort years in the making – a process of planning, fundraising, relocating to Brooklyn, renovating, and then moving back, all while providing uninterrupted food and nutrition services to thousands of our neighbors in need. If you have toured the new facility, worked a volunteer shift or attended an event recently, I think you understand how important this expansion is for our clients. Our newly renovated building is more than twice the size of our former facility, allowing us to more than double the number of meals we cook and deliver. The new, light-filled, state-of-the-art kitchen provides a wonderful work environment for our volunteers who help prepare, package and deliver 1.4 million meals annually. In fact, this summer, we cooked and delivered the greatest number of meals ever in our 30-year history. The

expansion is already “bearing fruit.” As our loyal supporters, you helped build this, and our 8,000 annual volunteers, some of whom are committed donors as well, help keep things humming. Thank you for all you do for God’s Love and our clients. Please watch for the November issue of Architectural Digest where you will find some stunning photos celebrating the work of so many who contributed to this project. I think you will agree this spread beautifully represents the work of our volunteers and supporters. We give special thanks to our Board Member Margaret Russell and everyone at Architectural Digest for sharing this good news with their readers. I would also like to thank all of our volunteers for their patience and commitment as we get settled into the new building and adjusted to our new surroundings. Now that we have returned to SoHo, we will be able to utilize this fantastic community resource to

serve those in greatest need, and host events at which we can educate our broader community about the role of nutrition in addressing illness. If you have any questions or comments, I invite you to participate in the discussion by emailing me at Karen_Pearl@glwd.org.You will be hearing more about our plans in the coming months. Thank you so much for your support during this process, and for helping to ensure that we can continue to cook and home deliver nutritious meals to people living with HIV/ AIDS, cancer, and other severe illnesses. On behalf of the entire staff at God’s Love, our Board and our 8,000 volunteers, I promise you that we will use this community resource wisely, and continue to nourish thousands of vulnerable New Yorkers who are too sick to shop or cook for themselves.

areen is living with lymphoma, and her four-year-old daughter Shanise has sickle cell anemia. Raising a sick child, along with Shanise’s two siblings, Clinton and Alaya, is difficult enough on its own. But Kareen was raising her children while working twelve-hour days as a Home Health Aide and studying to become a nursing assistant. Then, she was diagnosed with lymphoma. Chemotherapy and radiation left her weak and exhausted. Severe neuropathy in her hands made cooking almost impossible. Kareen was in the hospital when a social worker mentioned God’s Love We Deliver. “I had no other options, and no one else could help out when I could no longer cook meals for my family,” Kareen told us. Now, Kareen and her beautiful family receive nutritious meals delivered to their door from God’s Love. All of her meals
are tailored to meet Kareen’s specific medical requirements, and the special meals for her growing children are full of wholesome, delicious ingredients. “I’m just now starting to get some of my strength back. Jens & Amol Tie the Knot and Give

We have always been inspired by the important work God’s Love’s staff and volunteers carry out, as well as by the personal stories of the many clients. We are very happy we got to include that meaningful message in our wedding celebration, while at the same time providing meals to clients and raising awareness of the organization with our wedding guests.”
n August 15, wedding bells rang for our Leadership Council member Jens Audenaert and supporter Amol Shah. In honor of their wedding celebration, Jens and Amol generously donated a meal to a client of God’s Love for every guest in attendance. In addition to donating meals, Jens and Amol gave guests a very sweet parting gift after their reception – each guest received two of Chuck’s Famous Brownies. We are honored to have Jens and Amol in our God’s Love community and grateful for this generous and creative alternative way of giving. Thank you, and congratulations!

n June 9, staff, volunteers, and supporters joined together to celebrate the dedication of the new Michael Kors Building at God’s Love We Deliver. The Michael Kors Building will allow us to maintain our commitment to all who need God’s Love for years to come. Made possible with significant gifts from Michael Kors and the City of New York, along with hundreds of supporters, the dream of our new building has become a reality! Our brand new, state-of-the-art, 9,600 square foot kitchen on the second floor -- made possible by a generous gift from Steven and Alexandra Cohen and named in their honor -- has wonderful natural light, and includes four industrial-size refrigerators, three freezers, five blast freezers, five 80-gallon soup kettles, and a waste digester that converts up to 1,000 lbs. of organic food waste into disposable water. Our talented kitchen staff and volunteers are thrilled to have started cooking delicious, nutritious food for our clients. We were honored to have Melissa Rivers and her son Cooper with us for the dedication of the Joan Rivers Bakery. Melissa, who joined our Board of Directors last year, reflected on her mother’s rich and remarkable history with God’s Love. During the dedication, we proudly announced the establishment of the Joan Rivers Memorial Fund, seeded with generous inaugural gifts from Board member Michael Kors and the M·A·C AIDS Fund, with the support of its Chairman, John Demsey. We were also delighted to dedicate the Anna Wintour Volunteer Center. Anna Wintour has been a great supporter of God’s Love since the late 1980s, when she began mobilizing the fashion industry to fight AIDS. In recognition of Anna’s dedication to the mission of God’s Love, John Idol, Michael Kors, Lance Le Pere, and the Michael Kors Company made a significant gift to name the volunteer center at God’s Love in Anna’s honor. Other highlights included the opening of the Jeff Gates and Mike Moran Board Room, the Sennott Family Terrace, the Anne and Joseph McCann Rooftop Herb Garden, and the Mildred Bury Myroniak Demonstration Kitchen. Following the morning’s festivities, we held an evening open house for hundreds of active volunteers and major donors. Everyone enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres as they got their first glimpse of the new facility. In 30 years, God’s Love has come so far and done so much. The Michael Kors Building will allow us to cook and deliver more meals, serve more clients, and work with even more volunteers than ever before. We couldn’t have done this without your support.Thank you!

arol Alexander has been supporting God’s Love in extraordinary ways since she first stepped foot into our building sixteen years ago. As a volunteer, she gives her time weekly (often more frequently), chopping veggies in our kitchen. As a donor, she provides muchneeded funds for our programs and services. Carol gives to honor the memory of her late father, and because, as she says, “it feels good to do good.” She greets everyone with her thousand-watt smile every time she comes in to volunteer. But as much as we love her effervescent spirit, it was grief and despair that brought her to God’s Love. Carol’s father had just passed away when she decided to start volunteering. She tells us, “I was devastated. He taught me what it means to give back to the community. Being a part of God’s Love We Deliver was the bright side to an extremely difficult part of my life, and I am so glad I got involved.” Soon after she started volunteering, she found out that for every fifty hours she volunteers, her company, Verizon, donates $750 to the organization of her choice. It was only natural to Carol that she chose God’s Love, and has been donating twice – first with hours, then matched by Verizon’s generosity – ever since. Carol continues to find new opportunities to give to God’s Love, and she does so in big, generous ways. A few months ago, she donated the funds to purchase a delivery van in honor of her friend Deb, who had recently passed away from cancer. Carol also donates funds to help us build our annual Thanksgiving baskets, so that our clients have some extra holiday cheer delivered to them on Thanksgiving morning. Of course, she continues to donate her time and energy. She still does her weekly shift, responds to call-outs for volunteers, and van assists when she has the day off. Why does she do it all? Carol tells us, “You have to get up in the morning and have a purpose.” We’re so glad that Carol has found her purpose with God’s Love. God’s Love Hosts Symposium in D.C.

his fall, our advocacy team continued to lead The Food Is Medicine Coalition, the national volunteer association of nonprofit, medically-tailored food and nutrition services (FNS) providers. With generous funding from The M•A•C AIDS Fund, God’s Love hosted the 2015 Advocacy Capacity Building Project National Symposium September 8-10 in Washington, D.C. Our gathering was a huge success! The three-day event brought together attendees from over 30 diverse food and nutrition services agencies from across the nation. Our coalition has grown tremendously and we were happy to be joined by organizations that have participated with us in past years, as well as welcoming new ones. On the last day, participants were on the Hill to advocate that funding for medically appropriate food and nutritional services (FNS) be expanded in the Ryan White HIV/ AIDS Program and that FNS for people living with severe illness be incorporated into the major programs of the Affordable Care Act. In our fifth year, the Symposium continues to grow and allows us to unite the advocacy goals of food and nutrition services agencies from all over the country, share new and emerging research on food as medicine, energize and learn. The National Symposium is also the culmination of our annual advocacy training program, the Advocacy Capacity Building Project (ACBP). The ACBP offers on-site technical assistance to three new FNS programs each year, helping them to jump start their advocacy campaigns at the local level and contribute to the national conversation. Thanks to The M•A•C AIDS Fund, we are looking forward to Year 6.

VOLUNTEER PROFILE

avid Stern has been volunteering in our kitchen on Tuesday nights for nearly two decades. And he has been running in the Race to Deliver for nearly as long! He always comes in wearing his God’s Love hat and a huge smile, ready to peel some carrots or chop some onions (a lot of them, really!).We’re so grateful for his dedication to our mission, and excited to cheer him on in his 18th Race to Deliver in November.Thank you David! How has God’s Love become a part of your life? 1998 was a good year for me…new apartment, new job, great family and awesome partner. I felt it was time for me to give something back. I heard about God’s Love We Deliver and the services they provide, helping to bring nutritious meals to people living with HIV/AIDS. After my orientation and first kitchen shift I knew that God’s Love would be a good fit for me, and ultimately became my “Tuesday Night Commitment.” What’s the most significant part of God’s Love to you? It was so amazing to hear about the beginnings of God’s Love during the AIDS crisis and I am proud to play a part in their
ongoing and future efforts, especially in our beautiful new home. Throughout the years, I have made friends and met so many interesting, dedicated volunteers and staff members from all walks of life. As a volunteer and an ambassador for our organization, what do you tell others about God’s Love? When asked about God’s Love, I enjoy passing down some of the history I’ve learned over the years, as well as the impressive daily process from food prep to delivery. People are (and I am still) amazed by how many meals are prepared daily and the high quality of these meals. What made you start running the Race to Deliver? Why do you continue running? The Race to Deliver is one of my favorite days of the year. It is so special to see thousands of runners wearing their God’s Love tees and the supporters on the side lines cheering us on and coming through to the finish line with the glorious God’s Love banners hanging above. Who could ask for a better “runners high” than combining my passion for running and volunteering at God’s Love? Besides chopping veggies in the

We were honored to participate in the commemoration this year by having Miss USA Olivia Jordan represent God’s Love at the event. I recently reinvented myself by attending acting classes while working on film and TV projects. I enjoy gardening, so it was a thrill to work on the God’s Love rooftop herb garden in June. xpanding our SoHo home was a direct response to the increased need for our services throughout the New York Metro area. Our new facility has dramatically expanded our capacity to safely produce, store and deliver meals to a growing clientele living with an array of serious illnesses. And not only will meal production increase to meet this need, our state-of-the-art kitchen will also allow for more innovation in our menus and programs. Settling into our new home this summer and fall, these opportunities are starting to become a reality. While we have provided nutrition education to the community in different capacities for many years, we have been able to expand our community wellness programming since returning to SoHo. Over the summer we began to participate in Grow NYC’s Fresh Food Box workplace program. Running through the fall, the Fresh Food Box is a weekly CSA program that brings fresh, local produce and products to our office, and is open to staff, volunteers and community members. Participation among God’s Love staff and volunteers has been strong, and other neighborhood groups have joined as well. To enhance the Fresh Food Box experience, our Nutrition Services and Culinary teams provided community demos and workshops on nutrition and cooking techniques highlighting weekly items. This recipe provided by our friends at Grow NYC was tested (and loved) by our staff during one of these recent events. Enjoy!
¼ cup toasted pine nuts ¼ cup grated pecorino romano cheese 2 tablespoons chopped fresh sage 2 tablespoons melted butter
2. Place squash, cut side down, in a large baking dish. 3. Bake the squash for 50 minutes. 4. Scrape flesh of squash from the rind using a fork and place in a bowl. Add pine nuts, cheese, sage, butter, salt, and pepper; toss to combine. Serve immediately.

Cooking and delivering these meals is a huge community effort. We put all our holiday love and cheer into it, with your support. Our clients are very sick and unable to shop or cook for themselves. Holiday deliveries from God’s Love will provide meals and gift baskets to thousands of vulnerable New Yorkers, brightening their day. So many people are alone during the holidays. Our special holiday meals are delivered with love, to make sure that each and every one of our sick clients knows that someone cares. Generation Love
VICE-CHAIRS
Generation Love (genLOVE) is a group of motivated young professionals who are committed to embodying the mission of social service on which God’s Love was founded. genLOVE members will: raise the awareness of God’s Love by serving as social media ambassadors and cultivating new relationships with their peers; promote giving to God’s Love by individual contributions and through events; and be a champion and passionate advocate of our work. Our genLOVE members all donate at least $10 a month through our Kitchen Cabinet program and will support God’s Love in various ways throughout the year. To find out more about genLOVE, please visit glwd.org/genLOVE.
Kitchen Cabinet The Kitchen Cabinet program is our monthly giving program. Each month, your gift is paid automatically through your bank or credit card. To find out more about this opportunity for monthly giving, please call us at 212.294.8144 or visit us at glwd.org/kitchencabinet.
The Legacy Society Help secure the long-term future of God’s Love We Deliver by joining The Legacy Society. For more information, please call 212.294.8144 or visit glwd.org/legacy.
Golden Heart Society The Golden Heart Society is a group of like-minded people who make our work possible. By making annual gifts of $1,000 or more, members receive special benefits like invitations to exclusive members-only Golden Heart Society events for you and a guest, opportunities for one-on-one meetings with God’s Love program staff and Executive Director Karen Pearl, a private tour of our newly renovated Spring Street headquarters, reports on your gift’s impact in the community, and acknowledgement on our website and in our newsletter. Most importantly, your valued leadership gifts help the staff and volunteers of God’s Love build cutting-edge nutrition and advocacy programs that improve the health and well-being of men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other serious illnesses by alleviating hunger and malnutrition. To find out more about the Golden Heart Society, please visit glwd.org or email Jessica Cox at jcox@glwd.org.
Join us at our “Table for Six” Table for Six offers a unique experience in our famous kitchen where you and your friends can chop vegetables, peel potatoes, and make a difference in the lives of those in need. At the same time, you’ll enjoy a fun and casual orientation to our organization. For more information please contact Stephen Covello at 212.294.8144 or scovello@glwd.org.
THE MISSION OF GOD’S LOVE WE DELIVER is to improve the health and well-being of men, women and children living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other serious illnesses by alleviating hunger and malnutrition.
