We’ve talked about Written Content in several previous blog posts; how important it is in generating interest and how it should be relevant to your target market. This time we will go into making sure the content that you produce is effective. Let’s go through some of the advantages of written content to find out why it’s the bread and butter of most internet marketing campaigns. -

It’s easy to share and often more convenient to read about something.

It has the distinct advantage of being relatively faster to produce (depending on the topic). -

It can be SEO ready right as it is being written

-

It’s easier to understand and quicker to comprehend

-

It’s also relatively easier to convert written content into other languages

Criteria for Effective Written Content: Has a Clear Goal in Mind – is your writing to inform? Is it a call to action? Is it to educate on a certain topic? Maybe it’s to express an opinion? Whatever your goal is, you need to focus you’re writing on it to avoid diluting your message. Try to avoid the temptation of cramming in too many ideas into one article. Clear and Easy to Understand – always remember to write for your audience. Your

choice of words should be easily understandable to them. If you’re writing for the mass market, use a more accessible vocabulary and definitely avoid jargon. If you’re writing for a more seasoned crowd then make sure you’re not wasting precious space by elaborating on a topic that your audience is already familiar with. Relevant to Target Audience – before you start writing, ask; “what will my reader’s take way from this?” If you are writing something useful and relevant to your target audience then you’re doing them a service and providing value to them. Knowing your audience is key. Accurate and detailed – you won’t be able to convince anyone or have them heed your call to action if you provide faulty information. People will soon find out and will not likely want to trust someone who provides incorrect or incomplete information. Provocative – whether you’re goal is to provoke discussion, exchange ideas or make a call to action, your writing must be structured in a way that you build up and support your initial idea. Without any clear basis for support for your ideas, your argument or your call to action won’t be effective. Timely – this is somewhat related to relevance. Discussing a topic or trend that’s already past its prime might be a lesson in futility unless you have a radical new approach to the idea. Imagine writing a review of a product that’s been out in the market for several years. Do you really want to read something that’s been thoroughly discussed on other sites?

Format is widely accessible – this is more on the technical side; the format you choose to save your final product should be easy to access by your target audience. Websites are the most commonly used platform for publishing written content, but PDF, mobile sites and graphic files can have more reach and impact. The length and the amount of graphical information your output contains will usually affect which format you should choose.
