Articles from EricWelke.com If You’re Looking to Work from Home… by Eric Welke
Stop. Think, and then think again. Not everyone is cut out to work from home. There are specific skills required not to mention above average level of self-reliance, work ethics and discipline. There several types of jobs you can perform online. Just like in a regular work environment, jobs that require certifications and advanced skills However, you need to remember that the online employment marketplace is also available to everyone else on the planet with a decent DSL connection. This means you’re pitting yourself against veterans from all over. Finding the right employer is a huge challenge for anyone who is just starting out. Competition is harsh. You’ll need to study if a job offer is legit while worrying someone else is going to get it. The whole market is generally a biased towards the buyer, which is something you need to keep in mind before you go all in. I never realized how hard it was to get started in home based work. If you’re seriously looking to work from home you will have to make extra effort to wow your potential clients. Give them a reason to choose you and keep you. How to know if you’re ready? There isn’t a check list that you can refer to. Once you have the basics, it is time to start looking for clients. Check this list of the barest essentials you need if you’re looking to work from home:
- Your own computer. This is a no brainer. You need to have a computer that you can use exclusively for the duration of your shift. - Your own internet connection. Again this is very important. You simply cannot perform your duties if you don’t have a connection to the internet. Try to get the more reliable connection in your area. - A quiet area free from distraction. It’s hard to work when there are so many distractions. Make sure you isolate yourself from them when you start working. Focus on work when it is time for work. This will ensure you’re productive and always do your best work. - Marketable skills. Your skill should be something that is in-demand by employers online. It’s great to have ton of certifications and a master’s degree or doctorate, but if the market has no need for contractors with specialized skills then you should showcase your other useful skills more. Try to research on which skill is currently in demand then adjust your introduction letter and online profile to display that skill prominently Will you ever be ready for the offers that come your way? No, simply because you’ll never know what the client’s requirements are until you’ve been hired. Remember what I said earlier about the whole online work market being biased towards the buyers? Aside from the high level of competition, the fact that only the buyers really know what they need from a worker makes them very particular about who they choose and for good reasons too.
Now that you have a more realistic impression of home based work, you should now be able to set your expectations properly. Now go out there and start looking for your dream homebased job.
