A start-up business is heavily influenced by the personality of its founder. He is the primary decision maker and risk taker. He uses his skills, experience, and resources to get the business up and running. This is why a business owner’s personality and ethics has a huge effect on the credibility and viability of his business. When you look at successful companies, you can see how the culture of their founders is usually handed down to the employees. This is easier to do when the enterprise is still in its infancy. Everything is in flux and being the business owner automatically makes you the moral compass. It is your duty to lay the foundation of your enterprise’s vision and values. How does this insight help you in your own efforts in building your business? It helps you by providing a validating the importance of these two virtues and the critical role they play in your organization. You’ll start to notice the importance of imparting your vision and work culture to your employees. All businesses typically start with a small team. The members of this team tend to be directly in contact with the owner on a daily basis. As a business owner you will know that it’s easier to work with people who have similar values. It’s easier to impart the value of sincerity to people you meet on a daily basis. People who experience a s you want to be consistent in your dealings with your employees so that they too will practice what you preach. A little good influence can go a long way. Employees who feel valued by their employers end up happier. The benefits also extend to your customers. They receive better service and get a much more positive experience from your happy employees. Sincerity is definitely a proven morale booster that benefits people under you and customers who come to you. Honesty will always be the best policy even though some start-ups discard it for the sake of convenience. The consequences of this practice will eventually catch up with the company and can lead to insurmountable problems. The owner’s effort will


go down the drain if his business loses its credibility. Integrity is a quality that you should consistently model to your staff. They should never have to question your credibility. If you fail to do this, you risk demoralizing them, affecting their performance, or even driving them away. Your word as a business owner has little meaning to people that you’ve just met. Even if you’ve had years of experience, it still wouldn’t matter if your credibility and reputation is consistently suspect. This is why sincerity and integrity should be the norm in your company at the outset. One good piece of advice is to start small. You can demonstrate your sincerity to your staff in all your dealings with them. If you set an expectation with them, then make sure you meet it. You can show your sincerity in something as simple as being punctual to a meeting you planned.

If you’re faced with a situation where there is a toss-up between integrity and profit, your subordinates should never doubt that you’d choose to do the right thing. It should never even cross their mind. As the business owner, you shouldn’t be just a boss; you should also be a leader to your employees -the type of leader that leads by example.
