Having some familiarity with training video production can be very useful. The internet is primarily a text medium but it is now also saturated with streaming and recorded video. One of the biggest sites (and also considered as the second largest search engine) is Youtube.com. Any marketer worth his salt should be using video sharing sites to help increase awareness of their brand or product. I focused on training videos since these are viewed more positively by people online. No one wants to waste their time watching a clip that only contains a sales pitch. There has to be something at least entertaining or useful to draw people in. You never start with your pitch when you talk to a prospect face to face, why should you do it in a medium that is easier to ignore? What are training videos? These are videos designed to train and educate people about a specific subject. They are generally used by organizations to teach about new processes or methodologies. Some educational institutions include training videos as part of their teaching materials. What is the goal of a training video? Training videos aim to educate its viewers about a specific subject. This could be anything from a video showing people how to reset their routers to something as complex as cooking a multi-course thanksgiving dinner. General Outline on how to produce a video: 1. Conceptualizing and lay out 1. Rough draft of how the end product should look like. 2. Fine tuning until a working frame work is produced. 3. Create a story board from the framework. 4. Prepare the script 5. Establish a target length for the video. 6. What materials and resources are needed? (instructional aids and cast / speakers) 7. Clear storyboard and materials with a subject matter expert. 8. Where will it be shot? Outdoors or indoors? What setting? 9. Formulate a budget. Preparing the cast and crew 1. Build the team that will handle the technical aspects of the production. 2. Recruit and train the people who will appear on the video. Preparing for the shoot 1. Set a schedule for the shoot based on the most efficient use of available resources 2. Prepare the necessary equipment for each shot. 3. Distribute the script to each person with roles in the video. 4. Scout out the location for suitability and take still shots to finalize equipment and camera layout. Videography – the actual shoot 1. Coordinate the operation of the lighting, sound and camera equipment 2. Coordinate the people who play parts in the video. Editing 1. Get the raw footage and edit it so it conforms to the storyboard. 2. Adjust sequence as needed to get the best result. Post production 1. Add sound, graphic and text to the edited video 2. Ensure that the video’s graphics and text are thematically aligned with the related marketing material. 3. Create duplicates of the final version or upload and publish on video sharing sites.
This is a very general sequential outline of a training video production. It is based off the best practices applied by seasoned film makers. There is one step that is common in all their strategies. Whether its a one man operation or a full film production crew, preparation is key to making sure that a training video production is successful.
