Hey Division Eight! Its time again to give our teary-eyed goodbyes to summer and hello to the new school year! We've all had our little breaks and hopefully that’s given us all the rest we needed because now we have to get in gear again! Like the start of every year, Key Club starts off with new gathering members. This can be called the very first event of the new school year, and may very well be one of the most important ones, but fear not! There'll be a few tips for this very purpose! If anyone out there is doesn’t want to let go of summer just yet, or just haven't had enough fun, I'm glad to say there's still one more crazy event left: the color run! It'll be the time of your life so don’t miss out! If you haven't signed up to run, not to worry, there's still volunteering for happiest 5km in the world! August Divisional Meeting Just to recap our last divisional meeting, we spoke about the upcoming year. Although Chinatown beautification day already occurred before the meeting, it was too late to attend it, but not too late to mention! Chinatown beautification day is a annual event! If any club is having trouble finding an event, this event is ideal: many different event division participates in this one and is a great way to meet new people while still volunteering! The next subject after that was the 3rd annual Kiwanis picnic! It was an amazing experience, another event where all branches of Kiwanis are welcomed and another event where you can meet new people spread throughout the Kiwanis branches! Lastly as Fall comes, Fall Rally become yet another important event where key clubbers can meet new people and even people from other divisions! It'll be a grand event where special guests from the district board will attend and even run workshops! All club officers should encourage their members to attend as it will LIGHT THE PASSION OF KEY CLUB early!

The Color Run Coming in just a week to Brooklyn, The Color Run can be considered the happiest 5km in the world! This amazing race has multiple color zones where volunteers, like us, throw colored power on happy runners in white shirt! Tickets are selling fast though! As of now, only the Sunday run has any room left, so if want to run, register now! However, if you're not too keen on shelling out $60 for a run, you can still participate as a volunteer! No matter whether youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re running, throwing, signing, or cheering, fun is guaranteed! Don't hold back and have the time of your life here! Back To School! Sadly summer is about to leave us, but there's still a bright side: It's time for Key Club to become active again! The start of the year is always one of the busiest points of key club, but just a few tips can make everything so much easier!   

Hold meetings ASAP! It'll get you back into the swing of things so much earlier! Plan events early! It's better to be early than late and it'll save you the hassle! Collect dues as soon as possible! It'll get the trouble out of the way, and if you get it in early enough, you get a badge for your banner!

Getting members may be a toughie at first but remember: you don’t need them to like key club to join; they can learn to love it afterwards! However, if you have trouble with that, here's another set of tips!    

Attract them initially! Food and drink always bring people in! Educate people what key club is! Some people like to volunteer, but don’t know what key club is! Good for college applications! It'll be the initiative for them to join, and from then, it's up to you to light their passion! Constant events! When you have a lot of events, it keeps people interested and maybe even inspire them!

I hope these tips will help you in the upcoming year! Don't be afraid to ask me for help if anything pops up!

ICON 2013 By Hannah Song How was my ICON experience you ask? It was awesome! I’m really thankful to everyone that made it possible for me to go! ICON caught me off-guard, just like my first Leadership Training Conference [LTC]. You know how people say, “You don’t truly know Key Club ‘till you attend LTC?” That’s exactly how I felt during ICON: the extremely friendly atmosphere, the bonding with fellow Key Clubbers, and the breathtaking experiences all made ICON the best experience it could have ever been. At first I wasn't expecting much from ICON because it was going to be at D.C., since I was pretty sure that everyone had already been there once before. Oh boy, was I wrong. From this experience, I learned that whenever and wherever Key Clubbers from all over the world gather, even the most humdrum of places became astounding. I’d have to say the highlight of my first day at ICON would most definitely be the Meet and Greet Session. So you’re probably thinking, “Oh a meet and greet, huh... Like where you get to meet others, right?” Nope! It’s totally different, the Meet and Greet Session was insanely fun. It’s the time when Key Clubbers from all over the world trade DCON pins! It sounds childish, but a lot of people are hard core pin traders! It’s actually a lot of fun to go around meeting people through pin trading; the experience summed up in one word: epic. The rest of ICON continued on with workshops, bonding, fun, a whole bunch of picture taking, and service. Unfortunately, the New York District had to leave on the night of ICON’s final day; right after the Eliminate Dance. We left at 12 AM, and I couldn't have been more upset to have to leave behind the experience that had changed my life, my view of the world. I am really glad to have taken the small steps from joining Key Club towards my Vice-Presidency, then to my current position as District Editor all in one year. I regret nothing, and if I hadn't taken the chance of applying as District Editor, I wouldn't have been able to attend this life-changing experience. I want to thank you all, and I hope I will always remember this feeling to be able to serve you all to the best of my abilities! The International Experience In the summer of every year, Key Club holds an international conference that every key club from around the entire world is invited to attend. Although I personally could not attend, I sadly have heard of what I've missed from friend who have gone. To them, it was truly an amazing experience! Not only did they get to visit sites all throughout Washington, they've met some of the most enthusiastic key clubbers from around the world, especially the CNH key Clubbers! Everyone had a blast and experienced moments that would last them a lifetime. From visiting historical landmarks, eating the exquisite cuisine, to just talking to people, every moment was worth traveling all the way there from our home in New York. I truly wished I could've been there, but regrettably I couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t. However, I did receive so many snap chats, pictures, skypes, and even a subscription to the national spy museum to make up for my missing experience! The next ICON will be held in Anaheim, California! Though not much detail about it has been released, I would say without a doubt in my mind it could only be an absolutely amazing time! American Cancer Society This year, our district board has chosen 4 core district project projects to fundraise for and one of them is the American Cancer Society. The American Cancer Society does much more than just research, they provide support, medical aid, programs and services, help pass laws to defeat cancer, and host fundraising events; I'm sure you've all heard of the Relay for Life and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer! The American Cancer society is one of the easier project of the 4 that the district board has chosen because of its large name (not literally)! Because it's so well known, people are more willing to trust or to give more when you tell when your purpose for fundraising! However, there so much more we can do than fundraise! Your club can also choose to spread the word and educate, volunteer in the event, participate in the events, and whatever else you can imagine! Every little bit helps!

Spotlight 1: IRI Akiton Club Picnic Event By Selina China

On the sunny July 27th morning, Key Clubbers from Bayside High School and the like attended Cunningham park in Fresh Meadows to support the Akiton Club and the sponsor club Glendale Kiwanis. Both are branches of the Kiwanis family. For those who are not familiar the Aktion Club, it's a branch of the Kiwanis and is a service club for adults with special needs. From 9:30 AM to 2PM, 6 Bayside key club members attended to help set up and serve food and took part in a walk.

Spotlight 2: Starbucks Sandy Relief By Michelle Tam On April 20th, I went to 4th Street, between Avenues C and D with my home club, Benjamin N. Cardozo High School, to kick-off a day of service dedicated to Hurricane Sandy Relief. We worked together with Starbucks to restore the garden in that area. When I first heard about this event, I was so excited to be able to help out and get active. The event was in April even though Hurricane Sandy occurred in October. However, many people and communities are still in need of our help, even if it means cleaning up sticks and branches. At first, I was pretty nervous thinking about how I would work together with my members because this service event was one of our first events we went to after I became a club officer. I was unfamiliar with many faces and thought that we would struggle to cooperate well, with such an uncomfortable atmosphere. When we first stepped into the garden, I kept wondering, â&#x20AC;&#x153;How in the world are we going to restore this entire area in a few hours with our awkward atmosphere?â&#x20AC;? However, after we started working together to clear the area of debris, we managed to become closer and broke the ice between each other. We even created an assembly line to move heavy rocks more smoothly and efficiently. I became so relieved that I was able to become closer with my members and meet new people. Even though we were all exhausted from doing general cleanup, it was a great experience to be able to work together to restore a garden contributing to Hurricane Sandy Relief.

Spotlight 3: 3rd Annual K Picnic By Catherine Yeo On August 25, individuals from a variety of Key Club’s, including Kiwanis and Circle K, gathered for the Third Annual Kiwanis Family Picnic. Members participated in numerous activities from volleyball to wheelbarrow races and water balloon fights, and a total of $730 was raised! I personally greatly enjoyed attending this event because I was given the opportunity to meet many amazing people from Division 11 and Circle K, and I was also able to see my school’s sponsoring Kiwanis, which always puts a smile on my face. It was great to see everyone coming together and having fun. It truly felt like family. The highlight of the event, in my opinion, was when K-family individuals were auctioned off to be ambushed with water balloons and silly string, and they were not allowed to move or defend themselves. Together, members from my own and East West’s club collaborated and bought our very own lieutenant governor for $32! This led to the onset of the water balloon fight, which brought everyone together. It was the perfect end to a perfect day. I strongly encourage everyone to attend next year’s picnic. You won’t regret it!
