Community News Great Nationwide Kiss-In

by Michael Mahler On Saturday, August 15, 2009, Erie PA participated in the Great Nationwide Kiss-In, which occurred on about 50 cities, mostly in the US. The local event was held on the steps of the Erie County Courthouse. 140 W 6th St, Erie PA. This was part of a nationwide reaction to three couples who had been targeted by security and/or law enforcement personnel for simply kissing in public. The event was suggested by David Mailloux and David Badash. The total attendance here in Erie was maybe 2024. Typically, many sites had a relatively small turnout - Denver had 25. There is/will be a photo gallery and video posted to the Erie Gay News site. Both WJET TV 24 (ABC)and the crew for WSEE TV 35 (CBS) and WICU TV 12 stopped by to film. The Erie Times News had an article in their Monday, August 10 edition.We have a link to that article at www.eriegaynews.com The LBT Women’s group (http://womynoferie.wetpaint.com) and the UnitarianUniversalist Congregation of Erie (http://www.uuerie. org) were particularly supportive. I simply cannot say

enough good things about either group! Even though it was small, I believe that we all felt wonderful about the experience! Celebrate Erie was going on in Perry Square, half a block away. I think I saw a straight couple with two small children stop to look. They seemed friendly. Great job everyone and thanks so much! from Kirsten I couldn’t believe we had to move again, but the building sold, so I had to move within a week, I found a place near the Pillow street address. The new address is 564 W Cunningham St. Parking is wherever you find a spot. This new place reminds me of the old Keg bar—-Butler’s only gay bar, which was around for a long time. We will be making changes (slowly) to the place so bear with us. Starting in September, Vertigo will be open Friday, Saturday and Sunday. No more wondering if we’re open! It’s what I have wanted for

“Out in the Silence” update from Out in the Silence The documentary film Out in the Silence will begin screening locally in the coming months. Out In The Silence captures the remarkable chain of events that unfolds when the announcement of filmmaker Joe Wilson’s wedding to another man ignites a firestorm of controversy in Oil City, the western Pennsylvania hometown he left long ago. Drawn back by a plea for help from the mother of a gay teen being tormented at school, Wilson’s journey illustrates the universal challenges of being an outsider in a conservative environment and the transformation that is possible when those who have long been constrained by a traditional code of silence summon the courage to break it.

The Film’s Community Engagement Campaign

The aim of the Out in the Silence Film & Community Engagement Campaign is to expand public awareness about the struggles GLBT people face in rural and small town America and to promote dialogue and action in communities around the country that will help strengthen the struggle for fairness and equality for all. The campaign is structured around public television broadcast, a discussion guide and action tool-kit, and online networking activities. The most important aspect of this work involves an extensive community screening and discussion series that will help to break the invisibility, isolation and powerlessness of GLBT people in rural and small town America and bring people together to catalyze new ways of making resources and support available for those interested in working for change in the places where it is needed the most. In Pennsylvania, where the Campaign is being piloted with the support of a major institutional donor, local and statewide grassroots groups are helping to set up facilitated events in small towns and rural communities that do not have the resources or capacity to organize and host such community-building efforts on their own. The goal is to raise GLBT visibility in each of the state’s 67 counties and to use such events to engage and encourage local participation in ongoing grassroots work and in important policy debates now on the agenda. 6

In conjunction with and following broadcast, community screenings will be coordinated with outreach partners across the country to facilitate dialogue on the issues and inspire organizing and social action aimed at promoting fairness and equality for all Similar efforts are in-the-works in Iowa,Oregon, and other states, and the foundation is being laid for a national campaign to help strengthen the long-term movement for fairness and equality for all.

Aug 17 - White House opposes anti-gay Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) “....my Administration believes that the Act is discriminatory and should be repealed by Congress. I have long held that DOMA prevents LGBT couples from being granted equal rights and benefits. While we work with Congress to repeal DOMA, my Administration will continue to examine and implement measures that will help extend rights and benefits to LGBT couples under existing law.” Although the Department of Justice is defending the law, the brief states the president’s position regarding DOMA: “With respect to the merits, this Administration does not support DOMA as a matter of policy, believes that it is discriminatory, and supports its repeal.” Aug 19 - Evangelical Lutherans formally adopt inclusivity The biennial assembly of the Lutheran Church in America adopted Social Statement on Human Sexuality, “Human Sexuality: Gift and Trust.” By a 2/3 majority the church has supported families of all kinds and has acknowledged without judgment the wide variety of views within the ELCA regarding lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) inclusion. The document recognizes the ministries of congregations which conduct blessings of same gender relationships and same gender marriages where such marriages are legal. The social statement is tolerant of our differences both in scriptural interpretation and practice. The social statement supports our unity without requiring uniformity. At the same time, the church has demonstrated an understanding of the necessity for the bound consciences of its members to be respected by all. Congregations that wish to call a qualified minister in a committed, long-term, same gender relationship may do so without hindrance. Taking the Wrong Bus By Rev. Richard A. Moyer Pastor, Community United Church A young woman who has been attending our church was recently in my study for the first time. She noticed a portrait hanging on the wall, and she asked me about it. I told her that the picture was of Harry Emerson Fosdick, the founding minister of The Riverside Church in New York City. Riverside Church has long been the “cathedral” of Protestant Liberalism. It was originally financed by the Rockefeller Family, and it has been a flourishing church in Upper Manhattan since its beginning in the 1930’s. One of Fosdick’s most famous sermons was titled, “On Catching the Wrong Bus.” In the introduction to the sermon, Fosdick tells the true story about a man who accidentally boarded the wrong bus and traveled for hundreds of miles in the wrong direction before he realized his mistake. Fosdick used that incident to remind his congregation that, at times, the church has “taken the wrong bus,” misrepresenting the Gospel and the teachings of Jesus. In May, in his second guest editorial in the Erie Times-News, James F. Drane, a professor emeritus of bioethics at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, also makes the point that the church can get off track and head the wrong direction. His article has the sub-title: “Catholic Vision.” So, Drane, as a practicing Roman Catholic, is writing primarily to his church. But he also speaks to Protestants. Here is a portion of what he wrote: “Catholics and Protestants both have to be strong enough to permit discussion and debate within their communities and with secular believers. Some Catholics don’t want to bother with tough reflection and stressful debate. They take their moral stands from church authorities. For them, authorities are never wrong and the church never changes.” To me, the truth in what Drane writes is obvious: The church of Jesus Christ must be strong enough to permit discussion and debate. In my experience the church has often shown weakness in this area. Good church people become unreasonable and often act ignorantly when faced with a controversial issue, homosexuality being one

among many. I don’t understand how decent and normally kind people can suddenly experience a personality change when it comes to debate in the church. Are we really so insecure that we cannot listen to what someone else has to say? Are we so paranoid in the church that we immediately feel threatened when someone else has a view that is different than ours? I don’t have the answers to those questions, and I continue to be baffled by those who claim to be Christian, not always perfect in their own lives, yet ever so anxious to judge the lives of others! What I do know is that none of us has all the truth. We need to speak to one another so that the discussion can continue! APA appointed the six-member Task Force on Appropriate Therapeutic Responses to Sexual Orientation in 2007 to review and update APA's 1997 resolution, "Appropriate Therapeutic Responses to Sexual Orientation," and to generate a report. APA was concerned about ongoing efforts to promote the notion that sexual orientation can be changed through psychotherapy or approaches that mischaracterize homosexuality as a mental disorder. The task force examined the peer-reviewed journal articles in English from 1960 to 2007, which

included 83 studies. Most of the studies were conducted before 1978, and only a few had been conducted in the last 10 years. The group also reviewed the recent literature on the psychology of sexual orientation. "Unfortunately, much of the research in the area of sexual orientation change contains serious design flaws," Glassgold said. "Few studies could be considered methodologically sound and none systematically evaluated potential harms." As to the issue of possible harm, the task force was unable to reach any conclusion regarding the efficacy or safety of any of the recent studies of SOCE: "There are no methodologically sound studies of recent SOCE that would enable the task force to make a definitive statement about whether or not recent SOCE is safe or harmful and for whom," according to the report. "Without such information, psychologists cannot predict the impact of these treatments and need to be very cautious, given that some qualitative research suggests the potential for harm," Glassgold said. "Practitioners can assist clients through therapies that do not attempt to change sexual orientation, but rather involve acceptance, support and identity exploration and development without imposing a specific identity outcome." As part of its report, the task force identified that some clients seeking to change their sexual orientation may be in distress because of a conflict between their sexual orientation and religious beliefs. The task force recommended that licensed mental health care providers treating such clients help them "explore possible life paths that address the reality of their sexual orientation, reduce the stigma associated with homosexuality, respect the client's religious beliefs, and consider possibilities for a religiously and spiritually meaningful and rewarding life." "In other words," Glassgold said, "we recommend that psychologists be completely honest about the likelihood of sexual orientation change, and that they help clients explore their assumptions and goals with respect to both religion and sexuality." The Pride Parade, which kicked-off from The Zone on West 18th Street and followed State Street north to Perry Square, was the biggest ever. There were additional floats, plenty of marchers and representation from such groups as General Electric Transportation GLBTA Alliance, Erie Gay Pride, Inc., Erie Gay News and the Log Cabin Republicans. Also marching in the parade was Linda Judson, Democratic judicial candidate for Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court in the November elections. Judson also spoke at the Pride Rally in Perry Square, underscoring the importance of the upcoming judicial elections and urging the audience to vote. This year’s Pride Rally featured a variety of vendors and some great entertainment. The featured performer was singer/songwriter Tom Goss from Washington, DC. Also performing was singer Jeremiah Clark from Pittsburgh and local singer Devin Redinger. Miss Erie 2009, Miss Vanatae, and several past Miss Erie winners entertained the crowd with their musical numbers. Buddy Dobson, the “glow sorcerer,” served as Master of Ceremonies. Pride weekend continued on Sunday, July 26, with a special church service at Erie Community United Church, followed by the first annual Gay Day at Waldameer Park. This year’s Pride Weekend, which was sponsored by Erie Gay Pride, Inc., was chaired by Don “DC” Craig with assistance from a committee of more than 15 individuals.
