from Michelle Michaels So it’s that time again to help the loved ones in our life who have had cancer or known someone who is fighting it. From September 1 until the event weekend (Oct. 5-7, 2012) , the Zone Dance Club, 133 W 18th St, Erie PA, will be selling ribbons. On Friday, Oct. 5, we will be selling baked goods and ribbons. On Saturday, Oct. 6, we will be selling ribbons and baked goods, and there will be an auction at the end of the night. There will be a Think Pink Weekend, Pink Party Saturday night. On Sunday Oct. 7, we will have ribbons and bake sales, and Michelle Michaels and all of your favorite queens and kings will be giving all of our tips to the cause. Show starts at 10:30 PM. Please help any way you can. I started this six years ago, and for the last four years each weekend has raised over $1,700. To everyone who helps or has helped, I want to say thank you. Ten years ago my best friend (my Mother Gracie) had stage 4 cancer and she fought back and ever since then, we do whatever we can for this event. Again, if you can help with baking or baskets or help with working, please see me at the Zone or Facebook me.

Community News Pride Parade/Rally recap
from NW PA Pride Alliance On Saturday, August 25, over 250 people attended the Pride Parade and Rally. The day’s events were organized by NW PA Pride Alliance, Inc. There were three floats and about 14 units in the parade, which stepped off from the Zone Dance Club, went down State Street to Perry Square. The rally in Perry Square had 23 info tables and vendors. Speakers and performers included Rhiannon Angelina, current reigning Miss Erie; Laurie Finch of LBT Women of Erie, who was also celebrating her 11th anniversary with her wife Janice Hanusik that day, Michelle Michaels, local drag icon; singer Collis Allen; Melanie Shubitowski, President of Erie Sisters; Misty Kall, 2011 Miss Erie; Ebony Davis, board member of Greater Erie Alliance for Equality; Lake Erie Belly Dance; Michael Mahler, for NW PA Pride Alliance, Inc. and Erie Gay News; singer/ guitarist Bob Bearfield; Rich McCarty, board member of Equality PA; and singer/guitarist Jay Bones. Once again, the Dunk a Drag booth was a crowd favorite. NW PA Pride Alliance thanks all of the donors and volunteers who made the event such a success! A special thanks to Ben from Seven Springs, PA for providing and driving the lead float in the Parade! Those who would like to buy a print of Pride Parade/Rally or the Pre-Pride Parade Performance Party photos should contact Michael Coleman at (717) 525-0176 (please leave a voice mail if no answer) or email bluntroller03@yahoo.com. History Made at the Democratic National Convention! By Gregory P. Rabb, the only Jamestown area delegate to the DNC The Democratic National Convention (DNC) in Charlotte in early September made history in many ways. Perhaps the most important was the vote on the platform on Tuesday September 4 where I was in attendance to vote with the New York delegation on adding the following statement to the Democratic platform: “Freedom to Marry. We support the right of all families to have equal respect, responsibilities, and protections under the law. We support marriage equality and support the movement to secure equal treatment under the law for same-sex couples. We also support the freedom of our churches and religious entities to decide how to administer marriage as a religious sacrament without government interference. “We oppose discriminatory federal and state constitutional amendments and other attempts to deny equal protection of the laws to committed same-sex couples who seek the same respect and responsibilities as other married couples. We support the full

repeal of the so-called Defense of Marriage Act and the passage of the Respect for Marriage Act.” There were many thrilling moments on the floor of the convention, but perhaps none was more thrilling than adding the above statement to the platform on which the Obama-Biden ticket is running. As an openly -gay delegate and elected official, I was excited and honored to be able to add my yes vote to the proceedings. This was the first time in US history that either major party added marriage equality to its platform and speaker after speaker not only did not run away from this statement but enthusiastically embraced it. This convention also hosted the largest ever contingent of GLBT delegates—more than 10% of the delegate total—adding energy and excitement to our daily caucus. The Victory Fund and the Human Rights Campaign invited openly-gay elected officials—including myself— to a lunch honoring us for our service. To our surprise and delight, our guest speaker was First Lady Michelle Obama, who spent a long time with us thanking us for our support of the President and reminding us of his heartfelt support for our concerns. Of course, as usual, there were the anti-gay protesters on the street corners denouncing gays and speaking out against our rights. But the atmosphere on the convention floor was inclusive, and as President Clinton reminded us in his spellbinding speech, we are in this together. President Clinton also made history when, for the first time, a former President put into nomination the name of the existing President. The convention ended, of course, with the acceptance speeches of the President and Vice President reminding us that victory on November 6 is up to us. This was my first national convention and hopefully not my last. But as I get older and realize all the battles we have been through, there couldn’t have been a happier time for this 60 year old gay rights warrior than to be able to attend and vote to make history at the DNC. I arranged to be the onsite correspondent for the both the Jamestown Post Journal and WJTN radio. When speaking to them, I summarized my experience by saying “The Case was made and the deal was sealed!” Fired up! Ready to Go!
