Trump inauguration brings protesters to SC4 campus
photo by: Alexis Faley On January 20th members of the Michigan People’s Defense Network staged a protest of new President Donald Trump on SC4’s campus.
Andrew Kovacs Staff Writer andrewkovacsesg@gmail.com After perhaps the most controversial election in U.S. history, businessman Donald John Trump has officially been sworn into office as the 45th president of the United States. In his inaugural address, Trump declared that no man or woman shall any longer be forgotten, and the power has returned to the people at last. Trump said, “January 20, 2017, will be remembered as the day the people became the Obama Says Goodbye | pg 3
rulers of this nation again.” However, Trump’s inauguration has been met with much backlash from the American people. Recently, people have been converging all over the country to object to Donald Trump becoming the president, even on SC4’s very own campus. In Port Huron, an activist group, the Michigan People’s Defense Network, organized a gathering on Inauguration Day, Friday, Jan. 20. Those wishing to express disapproval for Trump were asked to assemble at the corners of Erie and McMorran, although the group claims the reasons behind the protest are not strictly about Trump. The Michigan People’s Defense Network

stated that they are a part of the Workers World Party, a socialist organization founded in the late 1950s to fight racism and fascism and intended to stand up for the rights of all people worldwide, especially those under racist or fascist attack. The intention of the protest was not to just speak out about Trump’s presidency itself, but the types of ideas that following Trump encourages. The group claims that while Trump is unfit to be President, it is the types of people he rallies underneath him and the beliefs those people hold that are more worrisome.

Obama Says Goodbye Robert Burack Sports Editor/Webmaster bburack16@gmail.com After eight years of holding the most polarizing job in the world, Barack Obama took center stage to address the nation one last time. The speech took place Wednesday, Jan. 10, from his hometown of Chicago. “It’s good to be home. My fellow Americans, Michelle and I have been so touched by all the well-wishes we’ve received over the past few weeks. But tonight, it’s my turn to say thanks,” the former president said to start the night. He went on to discuss the how change can happen, as it can come from ordinary people. He credited the founders of the country for allowing changes and improvements to make the nation a better place. Looking back at his eight years in office, Obama said he believes that if he had known the outcome ahead of time, he would have been filled with joy. He went on to add, “If I had told you eight years ago that America would reverse a great recession, reboot our auto industry and unleash the longest stretch of job creation in our history…” One of the notable improvements made was the building of bridges with Cuba. As of now the two countries are on the best terms in years. Another highlight of his presidency was capturing the man he calls “the mastermind of 9/11,” Osama Bin Laden, after the years of anxiety the terrorist caused not only the United States but large parts of the world. “And secure the right to health insurance for another 20 million of our fellow citizens – you might have said our sights were set a little too high,” Obama said when looking back at the success of passing the highly controversial Affordable Care Act. According to a recent poll from Fox News, 50 percent of the country approves of Obamacare. That same poll approved Donald Trump at seven percent less. As Obama reminisced over his run as president to a highly emotional Chicago attendance, he assured the country that the transfer between him and Trump would be as smooth as possible. “I committed to President-elect Trump that my administration would ensure the smoothest possible transition, just as President Bush did for

me.” This was done to make sure the country remains as wealthy and powerful as ever. The former president made it clear he had one focus: “the state of our democracy.” He added, “the idea that for all our outward differences, we are all in this together, that we rise or fall as one.” Bringing up the point that there have been many scary moments in the history of the country, Obama stated that “There have been moments throughout our history that threatened to rupture that solidarity.” He said the future of protecting this country is on our children, making it all the more important to give them the opportunity to get educated. Obama was proud to reveal the unemployment rate is near a 10-year low and the cost of healthcare is rising the slowest it has in a massive 50 years. Obama went on to express how happy he is with the country’s progress, but that there is still a long way to go. In particular, he still has concerns over “the laid-off factory worker; the waitress and healthcare worker who struggle to pay the bills.” Story continued on page 7

Editorial: Education Trumped
Donald Trump and Betsy Devos Alexis Faley Staff Writer alexisfaleyesg@gmail.com As America takes its first steps into the Trump presidency, the new head of the executive branch has begun appointing people to various departments of government. One of his most recent appointments was the woman he hopes to be the next secretary of education – Betsy DeVos. One would certainly hope that someone who was given such an important role in the nation’s government would be qualified, but if this election cycle has made anything clear, it’s that being qualified is no longer a requirement for political office. Tuesday, Jan. 17, a confirmation hearing was held for DeVos. Students should know that her appointment to secretary of education could come with many consequences. Any mistakes DeVos makes will affect an entire generation of students if she is confirmed. Many college students across the United States depend on loans or federal grants in order to receive higher education without incurring extensive debt. It is the responsibility of the secretary of education to distribute this money to students in need through Pell Grants and other forms of financial aid. During the hearing, Sen. Elizabeth Warren said that 150 billion dollars is invested into students each year by the federal government so that they can pay off their student loans. Warren also said, “The secretary of education is essentially responsible for managing a trillion-dollar student loan bank.” The financial futures of an entire generation are dependent upon a well operated Department of Education. To hold the entire future of a generation of students in one’s hands
is no small task. It’s likely safe to assume that most people agree that someone with such responsibility should be experienced in dealing with programs like this. So what experience does Betsy DeVos have? Warren asked, “Mrs. DeVos, do you have any direct experience running a bank?” “Senator, I do not.” “Have you ever managed or overseen a trillion-dollar loan program?” “I have not.” “How about a billion-dollar loan program?” “I have not.” “Ok, so no experience managing a program like this. How about participating in one? Mrs. DeVos have you ever taken out a student loan from the federal government to help pay for college?” “I have not.” “Have any of your children had to borrow money in order to go to college?” “They have been fortunate not to.” “Have you had any personal experience with a Pell Grant?” “Not personal experience, but certainly friends and students with whom I’ve worked -” “So you have no personal experience with college financial aid or management of higher education.” Betsy DeVos is a member of the aristocratic elite. She has a history of using her family’s considerable wealth to promote her personal agenda through politics. This is clearly not someone who knows the struggles faced by lower-class citizens fighting to make their educational goals a reality. If DeVos lacks experience running a government loan program, then surely she must have some redeeming quality that makes her worthy of this position, right? Perhaps what she lacks in personal experience she makes up for by being extremely knowledgeable about the education system. Later in the hearing, Sen. Al Franken asked DeVos for her opinions on the debate regarding proficiency and growth – a long-standing, wellknown debate in the world of education. However, DeVos made it clear that she did not know the difference between these two terms when she confused the definition of proficiency with that of growth. Despite being underqualified, perhaps DeVos’s redeeming quality is that she just wants what is best for students. However, she made it very clear that she will likely not make decisions that are in the best interest of the majority of students. Story continued on page 7

Editorial continued from page 7 When asked by Sen. Murray if she could promise to everyone at the hearing that she would not work to privatize public schools or cut federal money from public education, DeVos refused to do so. All schools that receive federal funding are expected to uphold certain standards provided by the federal government. When asked by Sen. Kaine if she would hold all K-12 schools who received federal funding to equal accountability under the law, whether public, public charter, or private, DeVos said that she did not believe that all schools should be held to the same standards. This has the potential to cause major inequalities in the education system regarding the treatment of students. For example, Kaine also asked if DeVos believed that all schools receiving federal funds should be required to uphold the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. To respond, DeVos said she thought that was a matter for each state to decide. This would mean that in some states, students with disabilities could be treated well, while other states could treat disabled students poorly. Sen. Sanders also had questions for the nominee. “Some of us believe that we should make public colleges and universities tuition free so that every young person in this country, regardless of income, does have that option. That’s not the case today. Will you work with me and others to make public colleges and universities tuition free through federal and state efforts?” DeVos responded that it was an “interesting idea,” SC4 Protest continued from page 1
but nothing is truly free. What about the simple matter of safety in the nation’s schools? When asked about the presence of guns in schools, DeVos said that she believed it was the right of the states to decide their policies for firearms on school grounds. She then cited an earlier statement from Sen. Enzi saying that guns may be necessary in some schools to “protect from potential grizzlies.” Potential grizzlies. In case this wasn’t obvious, there have been far more school shootings than grizzly bear attacks. A far greater threat than grizzly bears to a young student is the potential to become a victim of sexual assault. When asked by Casey what she would do about the current rates of sexual assault in public schools, DeVos was vague. It should never be unknown whether or not the national head of education will work to protect students from assault. Students deserve to know that they will be protected under the law and that their attackers will be brought to justice. It is important for the people of this country to remember that their power as citizens comes from using their voices to fight for their best interests. Too often, average citizens disagree with political events, but they don’t use their rights as citizens to fight for what they truly believe. If confirmed, Betsy DeVos will make decisions that will impact students for the rest of their lives. Are these decisions in the best interests of students? Obama continued from page 4
The Michigan People’s Defense Network argues that the ideas Trump holds have emboldened fascist and racist ideas, and because of this Trump has garnered legitimate Nazi and KKK support. The group said it is important to unite in opposition to such ideologies and that such hateful behavior will not be tolerated. When asked why they decided to organize a protest in Port Huron, the group replied that Port Huron voted overwhelmingly in favor of Trump, and so it is important to combat and stand against the racist and fascist types who support Trump. Michigan is leading in hate crime as it is, and so they feel Michigan is one of the places that needs to hear their criticism the most. Local political activist Alexander Smedley attended the protest. Smedley said that Trump was a byproduct of capitalism and the embodiment of fascism in the United States.
Transitioning to thanking those he loves, he started off with his wife Michelle. “For the past 25 years, you’ve been not only my wife and mother of my children but my best friend.” He thanked her for taking on the role she did, even though she never asked for it. Obama ended his thoughts on her by saying she didn’t only make him proud but “You’ve made the country proud.” Next up were his daughters. “Malia and Sasha, under the strangest of circumstances you have become two amazing young women.” Obama stated that that of all he has done in his life, the thing he is proudest of is being their dad. Obama moved on to his vice president, “the scrappy kid from Scranton,” Joe Biden who was the former
Another protester and SC4 student, Chelsey Kielbas, said that protests are one of the only ways for a citizen to get his or her voice out. Making a statement was both protesters’ main reason for attending. Smedley ended by saying, “Fascism is the absolute enemy of all working people.” The Michigan People’s Defense Network values the solidarity and equality of all people, but they feel uniting alone is not enough. With enough organization and effort, the group hopes to completely eradicate sexism, fascism and racism together with anti-migrant, anti-Semitic and anti-Islamic attacks. A member of the Michigan People’s Defense Network calling himself Mond helped organize the event and is also a student at SC4. Mond said, “Capitalism is at a dead end; a revolutionary resistance is necessary. We stand for the liberation of oppressed people worldwide.”
president’s first and best choice as nominee. Obama said it wasn’t just his success as VP, it was that they became like brothers. As the speech wound down, Obama stated, “My fellow Americans, it has been the honor of my life to serve you. I won’t stop; in fact, I will be right there with you, as a citizen, for all my days that remain. For now, whether you’re young or young at heart, I do have one final ask of you as your president – the same thing I asked when you took a chance on me eight years ago.” The 44th President of the United Stated ended his speech, telling all Americans the story is yet to be written. “Thank you. God bless you. And may God continue to bless the United States of America.”

Movie theatre opens near SC4
Therese Majeski Copy Editor thereseagnes@gmail.com Sperry’s in downtown Port Huron, unoccupied for well-over a decade according to the Times Herald, is now home to the self-described “boutique” theater, Sperry’s Moviehouse. “Our theater has been open for just over a month. It opened on Dec. 15,” said assistant theater manager Kaitlyn Szczepkowski. Szczepkowski also stated that Sperry’s Moviehouse does offer student rates. “We do have a student ticket price that’s seven dollars, and then it jumps up for the evening price,” she said. Based on pricing available at sperrysmoviehouse.com, this is a 25 cent reduction from the standard daytime ticket price for adults; students also receive a $1.25 discount on evening showings. Sperry’s Moviehouse is poised to be a versatile entertainment and dining venue for the area, offering 12 screens divided between the first and third floors and a second-floor dinner house.
Szczepkowski believes that the theater fills a need in the community. “We’re actually downtown Port Huron…it’s more convenient for people that live in this area versus having to head all the way over to the North End,” she said. “I’m hoping it brings more life to downtown…it’s busy, but it could be busier.” The dinner house attached to the theater is not yet open but will be in the near future. “I believe around the tenth of February…Valentine’s Day we’re going to do a ribbon cutting,” assistant restaurant manager Keith Gram said. According to Gram, patrons will be able to place online orders to the dinner house when they reserve their tickets and their food will be delivered to them at their seats in the theater. Sperry’s Moviehouse is also working towards showing more than the standard blockbuster offerings. “We’re looking into independents and…also doing special features,” Gram said. “That’s all a negotiation with studios.” Construction remains ongoing.

Quentin’s Album Reviews
Quentin Johnson Staff Writer “Chixtapes 4” By Tory Lanez On Aug. 13, 2017, Tory Lanez released a mind-blowing mixtape. This album tells a story taking listeners back to how guys used to pick up the ladies. In this mixtape, Lanez recreates old school songs from the 90s; what is interesting to me is how he does so without changing the meanings. “Merry Christmas Lil’ Mama” By Chance the Rapper and Jeremih Before the New Year kicked in, Chance the Rapper and Jeremih surprised us with a Christmas album. This album was very amusing to me, much like their others.
There is so much in the album that you probably won’t catch everything the first time listening. The album gives the feeling of an important message about life not being too hard to enjoy the holidays. I would recommend this to everyone. It’s a real eye opener. “More Life” By Drake An upcoming album in early 2017 will be “More Life” created by the well-known rapper Drake. This album is a follow-up to Drake’s last album “The Views.” A few singles from this album have already hit the streets and are on top of the charts already. I honestly believe that this is a soundtrack for life and would recommend it to everyone.

The Super Bowl is set Robert Burack Sports Editor/Webmaster bburack16@gmail.com After a season filled with scandals, injuries, suspensions, blowouts and thrillers, it is now down to two teams. On Sunday, Feb. 5, the New England Patriots will take on the Atlanta Falcons. One team is centered around a quarterback/coach combo looking to close the discussion on who really is the greatest. Another team is riding high with an offense that looks to be nearly unstoppable. That quarterback/coach combo of Tom Brady and Bill Belichick will be starting a record-setting seventh appearance. Though they earned four victories in the big game, there could be a case made that their two Super Bowl losses haunt them to this day. Both of those losses came at the hands of the New York Giants. Both were a result of two unbelievable catches. As some would say, “the ball was caught in the receiver’s face mask.” Earlier this year, Brady was suspended for four games after the league’s commissioner found him guilty in the never lasting “Deflategate.” With the chance to have that same commissioner hand him the prized Lombardi Trophy, the guy known as “Psycho Tom” for his insanely intense drive may be more determined than ever. They will be without Brady’s top target, Rob Gronkowski, however. They have not had Gronkowski for much of the second half of the season, but they still managed to have the best record in the league at 14-2. In two postseason games, the Patriots were not ever in much danger of heading home, except when Houston played stout defense in the first half. In the AFC Championship game, the Bradyled squad looked unstoppable, dominating the Steelers in all three phases of the game. Patriots’ coach Bill Belichick is known as a “defensive ace,” the one coach who can game plan and take out the top player on any team, anywhere, anytime. ESPN’s Max Kellerman calls him the “first coming,” saying his legacy will never be touched. Belichick may face his greatest test yet, as he takes on the jug
gernaut of an offense led by MVP-frontrunner Matt Ryan. Ryan is playing the best of his career, but he is not alone. He is surrounded by some of the best-skilled players in the league. His wide receiver, unlike other top wideouts, is not spending his off days on a boat in Miami. He just balls out on the field. Julio Jones may be the toughest one-on-one cover in the league today. Belichick is known for doubling players of these standards; however, if he chooses to do so, his defense may get blown out of Houston. Doubling Jones will only open the field for the other arsenal of weapons at the Falcons’ command, including two of the most versatile running backs in the league, who torment any defense they face. Atlanta comes in red-hot after dominating their two playoff opponents with 36-20 to the Seattle Seahawks and 44-21 to the Packers, who were led by possibly the best player in the league, Aaron Rodgers. The Patriots come in with the number-one scoring defense, while the Falcons come in with the number-one scoring offense. According to Oddshark, the Patriots are currently a three-point favorite for the Super Bowl in Houston.
